OUR STORY
www.sitkacenter.org
About the Sitka Center
Located on Oregon’s central coast between Lincoln City and Neskowin, the Sitka Center has been providing life-changing workshop and residency experiences for 48 years. Sitka’s coastal rainforest environment on the flank of Cascade Head, beside the magnificent Salmon River Estuary, is like no other: an ideal place for creative learning and inquiry. Summertime brings close to 1000 students to attend more than 100 workshops at Sitka. Students experience in-depth workshops in visual art, writing, crafts, ecology and music designed for all skill levels (pp. 11-37). Check out the additional workshops that will be offered this fall! Autumn transforms the campus from a buzzing hive of workshops to the quiet, contemplative retreat that is our residency program (p. 39). From October to midMay, selected artists, writers, ecologists and musicians live at Sitka from 2 weeks to up to 3¹/2 months. Housing and studio space are provided free of charge so that our residents can take a deep dive into their creative and scientific inquiries.
3
Free public events at Sitka offer opportunities to gain new experience and insight from talented instructors, residents and community members (pp. 46-47). Mingle and Muse programs combine enlightening presentations with fun social gatherings, while the Resident Show & Tell events introduce Sitka’s artists- and scientists-inresidence and their work to the community. Every November, the Sitka Art Invitational takes us to Portland for a week that includes special workshops (p. 36), presentations and an artist party that kicks off the exhibit and sale (p. 46). Here you will find 450+ pieces of artwork by 140+ Northwest artists invited to participate in the show. This exhibit celebrates artwork inspired by the natural world and mirrors the art making that happens during our workshop and residency programs. It’s the special combination of place, purpose, and people that creates the Sitka spirit. We invite you to become a part of enhancing the relationships between art, nature, and humanity.

Use of Self
All Skill Levels | Age 18+
All Skill Levels | Age 16+
Digital stories have been used to tell personal narratives, record moments of insight, and even sell products. We will write short scripts that weave person into place, film local glimpses in the forest and at the river, and compose a tiny film. Participants must bring a phone or camera, and a Mac laptop computer or iPad.
Whether we create pots or paintings or poems, our primary creation is of our selves. A rigid and unchanging self is limited to repeating the same patterns. Through movement, play, hands-on guidance and exploration of nature, we will begin to uncover a more free and authentic self to create more authentic art.

A conscious understanding of our tools, process and the underlying motivations can help us cultivate our path. In this workshop I present a series of steps to help you define your voice in paint.
Build a foundation for future watercolor growth, with just enough color theory to explain the “whys” of color mixing. Test your watercolors for transparent, opaque or staining qualities. Paint color wheels and color charts. Use your new knowledge to paint leaf shapes with wet-into-wet techniques for glowing color.

Introducing Grass Mountain
Get to Know Grass Mountain Open House - free event! Sat, August 4 - 11am to 2pm
Workshops at Grass Mountain Reflecting Place in Music - July 8 Outdoor Skills for Wildnerness Wanderers - Aug 25-26 Grass Mountain offers new possibilities for Sitka and for our community. We see the potential to expand our current programming, experiment in new areas and be actively engaged in the stewardship of this beautiful and remote property. The quiet solitude of the vast meadows and forests also includes a small cottage and workshop, visited by elk herds and surrounded by greenery traced by hiking trails.
Grass Mountain is Sitka’s new eighty-acre
property just 2 miles from our main campus within the Cascade Head Scenic Research Area. We were able to add this magnificent location, a former homestead with views of the ocean, through the generosity of a small group of donors in June 2017.
Our planning has just begun, with a focus on creating powerful experiences for new generations of scientists, artists, ecologists, writers and musicians, where they can engage in place-based inquiry and collaborations. As we strengthen our connection to the land and our role in it, we are thoughtfully planning special gatherings, unique resident stays and creative workshops for Grass Mountain. Our interest is fostering a space where individuals of all backgrounds may exchange ideas and transform our world through the exploration of art, science, nature and humanity.

A gift of time and space for creative projects and research
Tucked in the forest near Cascade Head, Sitka is an ideal location to withdraw from the distraction of daily life, finding the solitude needed to push through creative boundaries and chase artistic and scientific pursuits. We revere this practice. Sitka’s intention is to offer residencies with living spaces and studios that enhance this experience.
Up to six residents at a time, usually from different disciplines and stages in their careers, live and work on campus from 2 weeks to up to 3 1/2 months free of charge. See the application on our website for specific dates for Fall and Spring sessions. A residency is about taking precious time out of the regular routine of life and expanding into the space of creativity.
The Residency Program has provided more than 250 artists, writers, musicians and natural science scholars the opportunity to conduct their work in the unique environment of Cascade Head and Salmon River estuary. Residents are on campus October to mid-May.
The Sitka Center currently offers a variety of specialized residencies: the Howard L. McKee Ecology Residency, the Recorder Residency and the Jordan Schnitzer Printmaking Residency (for non-printmakers). Learn more and apply for residency at sitkacenter.org.
