TABLE OF CONTENTS
Welcome! Last summer, as part of the process of joining Sitka, I participated in a four-day ceramics workshop taught by Ruri (p. 21). On the first morning, Ruri invited each of us to take two lumps of clay outside and collect imprints. One by one, we passed through the studio’s screen door, lumps in hand, and explored our natural surrounds in search of inspiration. I sought out a Sitka spruce and pressed clay into its bark with my palm. Walking the grounds, my imagination conjured images of others who have chosen to set roots in this landscape: first peoples and homesteaders, native and invasive species, foresters and hikers, artists and scientists, the Sitka Center’s founders, and the many staff members, board members, donors and volunteers who have stewarded Sitka through nearly five decades of organizational evolution and impact.

The year that lies ahead—my first at Sitka—is ours for the collective discovering. What feels important to preserve and celebrate? Where is adaptation necessary? What wisdom do the elders among us feel most compelled to share? What emerging issues are of greatest urgency to the next generation? My first call to action is this: engage with the Sitka Center this year. Take a class (pp. 11-35). Come to the Sitka Art Invitational (p. 45). Attend a Mingle & Muse event (p. 47). Apply for a residency (p. 37). Tell a friend. Propose an experiment. Sketch an idea. Send a postcard. Write a love letter. Write a poem. However you see to participate, join me this year in actively reflecting on the legacy of this place and space, in articulating why its existence is all the more important now and in shaping what we see to make and do next together. OUR STORY
Explore your creative spirit and connection to nature.
For nearly 50 years the Sitka Center for Art and Ecology has invited thousands of people to explore the interconnections between natural curiosity and personal creativity. Through workshops, residencies and public events the Sitka Center provides time and space for place-based reflection, inquiry and creation. The Sitka Center is located on Oregon’s central coast between Lincoln City and Neskowin. The coastal forest landscape surrounding the Sitka Center is an inspiring setting for natural exploration, artistic expression and personal growth. Our studios are set among sword ferns and Sitka spruce trees, birdsongs and the roar of the ocean are audible from our courtyards and many of our workshops integrate field-based components. Workshops (pages 11-35) Whether you are an experienced artist or naturalist, or you are interested in picking up a sketchpad or magnifying glass for the first time, in this catalog you will find over one hundred workshops for all skill levels exploring writing, painting, printmaking, ceramics, ecology and more. Our workshop season runs from May into September. From poets and painters to zoologists and foresters, our workshop instructors are experts in their fields, with passion for their areas of expertise, and who find joy in sharing their skills and knowledge with others. Our team works together to create a community of learning and sharing where everyone is welcome. Residencies (page 37) From October to mid-May, selected and invited artists, writers, ecologists, musicians, and interdisciplinary researchers and makers live at the Sitka Center in residence. Residency durations range from two weeks to three-and-a-half months, and studio space is provided free of charge.
Outreach Events and Exhibits (pages 45-47) Free public events at the Sitka Center are offered throughout the year. Our Mingle & Muse Speaker Series brings diverse and topical art and ecology voices to the Oregon coast, and Resident Show & Tell events share the work of the Sitka Center’s artists and ecologists in residence with the community. Each November, the Sitka Art Invitational takes place in Portland, Oregon and showcases over 450 pieces of nature-inspired artwork by over 140 Northwest artists, and celebrates the finished product of artmaking as part of a creative process. Talks and receptions create opportunities for visitors and art collectors to meet the artists. When we give ourselves time and space to reflect on our relationship with the natural world and get in touch with our creative selves, transformation—on all scales—is possible. We invite you to experience the Sitka Center and the power of this landscape for your yourself. We look forward to seeing you!

You will learn to hand coat paper with the cyanotype chemicals and, once dry, make photograms by placing the collected items on the paper and exposing them to sunlight. Each print will be unique.
Transform your photographs into beautiful gravure etchings. Make prints using non-toxic, lightsensitive solarplates that develop in water instead of acid. This environmentally friendly process translates photographic detail into ink on paper with unparalleled beauty. It is a fun process requiring no previous experience. Students will leave with 8 - 10 prints.
In this intense workshop of serious fun, students will study wearable and collapsible structures and explore unique ways to tell stories by cutting paper. Masking and revealing is essential to storytelling and will be playfully explored to take the artist book on the wild side.

Lexi Coburn
Combining Media: Printmaking & Polaroid Transfers/Lifts
All Skill Levels | Age 16+
All Skill Levels | Age 18+
Intermediate | Age 18+
Explore the many possibilities of image transfer and acrylic skin combinations on a variety of substrates including canvas, paper and wood. Combine image transfer and mixed media to add layers of content to prints and collage. Participants will leave with a collection of samples and the ability to continue working with these processes at home.
In this one-day workshop, we will dive right in and make multiple small paintings, learning to layer color and imagery with paper, paint, pens and pencils. Responding to Sitka’s spectacular setting, imagery of local flora and fauna will make their way in-between abstract layers.
Learn tips about combining printmaking with the alternative photographic process of Polaroid dye transfers/emulsion lifts. Layer stark, deeply etched lines juxtaposed with color photographic imagery. Bring a small copper or zinc intaglio plate that is ready to print (or one will be provided). Students can expect to take home multiple prints.

GRASS MOUNTAIN
Sitka Center for Art and Ecology
Introducing Grass Mountain About Grass Mountain In June 2017 the Sitka Center acquired an 80-acre property known as Grass Mountain, located within the UNESCO Cascade Head Biosphere Reserve, and surrounded by 9,670 acres of protected Cascade Head Scenic Research Area forest. The acquisition was made possible through the generosity of a small group of donors, and the volunteer land restoration and grounds keeping of Jane and Frank Boyden. History For hundreds of years the only settlements near Cascade Head and the Salmon River were the villages of indigenous peoples. In the 1870s white settlers began to arrive. By 1900, the area was being homesteaded for the grazing of cattle, the growing of crops and the cultivation of timber. That’s what brought Nettie Long to Cascade Head. In 1905 at the age of 17 she came to the Oregon Coast and staked a claim to 160 acres. After her husband Bert Walls passed away, she lived on the land for 60 years with her only son. They called the property Grass Mountain because of its open meadows, a name also used to describe Cascade Head itself. Nettie died in 1965, five years before the Sitka Center was founded. Over the next 40 years Nettie’s son, Bob Walls, cultivated timber as the Sitka Center grew and flourished only a mile away. When Bob died in 2011 his family had farmed Grass Mountain for over 100 years.
What does the future hold for Grass Mountain? The Sitka Center has existed at Cascade Head since 1970 with a reverence for the ecological and cultural histories of this magnificent place. As we become stewards of Grass Mountain we honor those who loved the land before us—indigenous peoples, Netti Long, and Bob and Arlene Walls. In the coming years the Sitka Center will thoughtfully develop programs and events at Grass Mountain that explore the relationship between art and nature, and that share the Grass Mountain story with future generations.
Q. Is Grass Mountain currently open to the public? No. While planning for the future of Grass Mountain is underway, we are not yet able to safely support unaccompanied public or Sitka member access at this time. Artists and ecologists are currently staying in the historic home on the property by invitation as part of our Residency Program, but there are no public access roads, restrooms, trash bins, marked trails or other public amenities at the site. Q. How can I visit Grass Mountain? In 2019 watch for pop-up events throughout the year, including guided hikes to explore the grounds and learn about different aspects of the property’s ecology and cultural history (sitkacenter.org/ about/about-grass-mountain) Q. How can I contribute to the future of Grass Mountain? At every stage of this project—from land acquisition and stewardship to operations and program funding—Grass Mountain is growing through the generosity of people like you. Please contact Alison Dennis to discuss how to get involved and contribute to Grass Mountain’s future at alisondennis@sitkacenter.org.

May 11 Jason Graham (MOsley WOtta) What We Risk: Creativity, Vulnerability and Art

2019 SITKA CENTER SPEAKER SERIES Mingle & Muse July 1 Adam Kuby

Mingle & Muse August 12 Jane Degenhardt
Art and nature provide a context for seeing the threads of connectivity that run through our world. Viewed through the lens of systems thinking, the messy business of creating public murals, paintings and collaborative art with children is a source of innovation. Exploring these artmaking processes, Jane Degenhardt draws connections between seemingly unrelated systems, and discusses the role diversity plays within these systems to foster a greater understanding of culture.
Dana Lynn Louis will share her public works through a visual presentation that traverses the process involved in creating and collaborating with populations ranging from women in the remote village of Sinthain in Senegal West Africa to those experiencing houselessness in Portland. Louis will also draw connections between her installations, studio and public works, illuminating the stepping stone that have formed the path she is on. Adam Kuby will discuss his approach to creating meaningful site-specific artworks that foreground the environmental forces at work in urban, suburban, rural and wild sites. He will share strategies for making works that are not pristine, but rather thrive on interactions with the world around them, and enlist and incorporate the elements of time, change, decay and erosion as part of their formal and conceptual existence. Kuby will also share how he is redirecting more of his practice towards addressing climate change.
