Sitka continues to reach out beyond its cozy forest home to bring our spark to other Oregon communities. In 2015 our outreach activities took us near and far. In July Sitka partnered with Friends of the Cascade Head Marine Reserve and a variety of other community organizations to sponsor an education outreach celebration about the Reserve. In September we participated in Portland’s annual Art in the Pearl street festival. In December residents participated in Sound of Nature, Sound of Art at the Lincoln City Cultural Center. While Sitka’s trio of core programs continues in our workshops, residencies, and the Sitka Art Invitational, we’ve taken strides to expand our service to the surrounding community through a youth engagement program in partnership with local high schools. In 2015 this outreach program, sponsored by Jordan Schnitzer, delivered targeted workshops on Sitka’s campus to a dozen area students. Those who successfully completed the program were also granted scholarships to take a free summer workshop.

Sitka’s Board of Directors saw the departure of two members, Nancy Tauman and Stan Peterson. Many thanks to the two of them for their service and we look forward to their continued involvement in our community. We also welcomed a new board member, Ruth Spetter, who began with us in January 2016.

Every year thousands of individuals participate in Sitka’s programs. People engage with Sitka in pursuit of creative inspiration, learning, and new skills. They also seek the powerful connection to nature and to place that is not only found by visiting Cascade Head and the Sitka campus, but that seems to travel as the Sitka spirit wherever our community and programs may be. Residents, workshop participants, and instructors alike recognize in Sitka a place unlike any other where a special creative spark resides, ready to ignite if only they give themselves the gift of time to find it.
SITKA CENTER FOR ART AND ECOLOGY
Thanks to the generous support and continued participation of people like you, Sitka is a vibrant and healthy organization. After 46 years, we are recognized in Oregon, across the nation, and internationally as a bright light in the constellation of art and ecology centers. We continue to strive for more ways to fulfill our mission of expanding the relationship between art, nature and humanity in 2016 and beyond. Join us! —The Sitka Center Board and Staff 2015 ANNUAL REPORT

Our Residency Program runs from October to May and provides artists, writers,
musicians and natural scientists with the opportunity to delve deep into their work while being surrounded by the natural environs of Cascade Head. Each resident is provided with comfortable living and work spaces, free of charge, for up to three and a half months. We are able to support five residents at a time (about 20 per year). Two special residencies take place in the fall and spring. In the fall, the Jordan Schnitzer Printmaking Residency (JSPR) offers three professional artists, who are not printmakers, with the opportunity to expand their repertoire by creating copper plate etchings under the guidance of master printmaker Julia D’Amario. The Recorder Residency brings a professional recorder player for six weeks in the spring. Sitka’s residents perform community outreach during their stays through teaching workshops to area adults and in coordination with local schools as well as providing lectures, demonstrations and assistance to area non-profits and ecology agencies. SPRING RESIDENCY – JANUARY TO MAY 2015 Sandy Dorr, January 27 – March 25, writer, Grand Junction, CO Rebecca Forgac, January 27 – May 6, visual artist, Portland, OR Maxim Loskutoff, January 27 – May 6, writer, Missoula, MT Heather McMordie, April 18 – May 6, visual artist, Philadelphia, PA Linda Weiner, January 25 – May 6, scientist, Santa Fe, NM Alison Melville, April 17 – May 6, recorder resident, Toronto, ON Gail Grinnell, January 9 – January 23, JSPR, visual artist, Seattle, WA
Our Workshop Program takes place between May and September and provides
individuals of all levels the opportunity to make art, write, play music and enjoy their connections to nature. We offer more than 100 workshops in a variety of topics including painting, drawing, printmaking, kayaking, fiber arts, photography, poetry, metal work and wood carving. Our workshops are led by knowledgeable instructors experienced in guiding students towards reaching their creative goals. Workshops take place in one of our five studios or outdoors in the Cascade Head Scenic Research Area. The annual workshop catalog is available in print or online each February.
WORKSHOP HIGHLIGHTS • 982 students took workshops. • 102 workshops were taught by 66 returning instructors and 28 new instructors. • Sitka paid instructors a total of $67,078. • In its fifth year, our High School Art Scholarship Program placed students a Sitka workshop of their choice, free of charge. • The Adult Scholarship Program pays ½ the cost of tuition for up to 8 participants who wouldn’t have been able to afford the cost of taking a workshop at Sitka. • Sitka supported the growth of one young adult in our summer internship program.

ART INVITATIONAL HIGHLIGHTS ART INVITATIONAL HIGHLIGHTS The 22nd Annual Sitka Art Invitational, held in Portland at the World Forestry Center on November 7-8, bustled with 2,400 art enthusiasts (up 20% from last year) and 402 pieces of artwork exhibited by 136 Northwest artists. The goals of this outreach event were to spread the word about Sitka’s mission and build awareness of our Workshop and Residency Programs. In all, 95 art buyers purchased 119 pieces of artwork. Proceeds of sales were split 50/50 with the artists, resulting in $33,784 paid out to artists. Totaling all sales, sponsorship and in-kind donations, Sitka’s direct income was $134,150. This event would not be possible without the enthusiastic support of more than 120 volunteers, exhibit committee members, sponsors and the entire board and staff. Volunteers contributed 1,200 collective hours of service during the Art Invitational.
COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS During the Sitka Residency Program more than 221 people attended the four free Resident Show & Tell events. Held at the beginning and end of each residency period, the presentations gave residents an opportunity to share their work, connect with each other and the local community. During our summer workshop program, five free Mingle and Muse events drew nearly 206 attendees. The Mingle and Muse lecture series featured visiting artists, writers and ecologists. These events encouraged viewers to learn more about the work of accomplished experts and explore the Sitka Center grounds and studios. Mingle and Muse Presenters: Jerry Franklin ~ Josie Sibara ~ Stan Peterson ~ Jef Gunn ~ Natalie Craig In February, Sitka offered a unique reading by author and past Sitka resident Kurt Fausch. Kurt is a Professor in the Department of Fish, Wildlife, and Conservation Biology at Colorado State University, he shared excerpts from his recently published book For the Love of Rivers.
