MATERIALS
• ORIGINAL YARN
2 3½oz/100g skeins (each approx 219yd/200m) of Noro Taiyo (cotton/ silk/wool/polyamide) in #17 Orange, Red, Grey
• SUBSTITUTE YARN
1 7oz/200g ball (approx 437yd/400m) of Noro Ito (wool) in #20 Usuki
• One size 7 (4.5mm) crochet hook, OR SIZE TO OBTAIN GAUGE
• 4 stitch markers (for Medium and Large bowls only, optional)
GAUGE
20 sts and 21 rnds to 4"/10cm over sc using 7 (4.5mm) hook.
TAKE TIME TO CHECK GAUGE.
Notes
1) If using Taiyo (the original yarn), one bowl can be made with a single skein.
2) Small and Medium bowls have wrong side of stitches on outside of bowl. Large bowl has right side of stitches on outside of bowl, for a slightly different look.
3) Stitch markers are used to indicate increase locations in the last rounds of the Medium and Large bowls. If you can “read” your stitches, you may not need to use the markers.
Stitch Glossary
FPsc (front-post single crochet) Insert hook from front to back and then to front again around post of indicated st, yo and draw up lp, yo and draw through 2 lps on hook.
Bowls
Small Bowl
Beg at bottom of bowl, ch 4, join with sl st in first ch to form ring. Rnd 1 (RS) Work 8 sc in ring, join with sl st in first sc—8 sc. Note Work first st of each round in same st as joining sl st. Do not turn, unless otherwise instructed.
Rnd 2 Ch 1, 2 sc in each sc around, join with sl st in first sc—16 sc.
Row 3 Ch 3, sk 1 st, 1 shell in next st, (that is, above middle dc of last odd row’s shell), ch 1, sk 1 sc, *1 dc in next st, ch 1, sk 1 sc, 1 dc in next sc, ch 1, sk 1 sc, 3dc cluster, sk 1 sc, 1 dc in next sc, ch 1, sk 1 sc, 1 dc in next sc, ch 1, sk 1 sc, shell in next st; rep from *, end sk 1 sc, 1 dc in last st, turn.
Row 4 Ch 1, sc2tog, 1 sc in top of each st and in each ch-1 sp to last 2 sts, sc2tog, turn—37 sc.
Rep rows 3 and 4 until 42 rows have been worked. Fasten off.
Back Center Panel
Work as for front until 48 rows have been worked. Fasten off.
Neck and Shoulder Joining
With H-8 (5mm) hook, join yarn to top of back and ch 20, join to front panel with a sl st and fasten off. Rep for 2nd shoulder.
Side Panels
Note Side panels are worked directly onto center panels out towards side seam using H-8 (5mm) hook.
Row 1 Attach yarn at end of first sc row on hem of front panel by working 1 sc directly into end of sc row, *2 sc in end of dc row, 1 sc into end of sc row; rep from * along entire front panel, 1 sc into each of the 20 ch, 1 sc into end of sc row of back, **2 sc in end of dc row, 1 sc into end of sc row; rep from ** along entire back panel, turn— 155 sc in total with 63 sc along front panel and 72 along back panel.
Rows 2–41 (2–43, 2–45, 2–47, 2–49, 2–51) Ch 1, sc into FLO of each st to last st, work last sc under both lps for stability, turn—155 sc. Rep for 2nd side panel by attaching yarn on bottom of back panel.
Crochet side seams tog with sl st. Place marker on 78th st from hem edge on each sc side for top of shoulder.
Finishing Cuffs
With H-8 (5mm) hook, chain 30.
Row 1 Sc in 4th ch from hook, ch 1, sk ch 1, *sc in next st, ch 1, sk 1 ch; rep from * across, end sc in last ch, turn.
Row 2 Ch 2, *sc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, sk 1 sc; rep from * across, end sc in ch-3 sp at end, turn.
Rows 3–48 (3–50, 3–52, 3–54, 3–56, 3–58) Ch 2, *sc in next ch-1 sp, ch-1, sk 1 sc; rep from * across, end sc in ch-2 space at end, turn. Mark row 24 (25, 26, 27, 28, 29) and match it to top of shoulder. Stitch cuff in place.
Seam underarm and side seam.
Neckband
Attach yarn at shoulder using E-4 (3.5mm) hook. Rnd 1 Work sc evenly around neck edge, do not join. Note Work in a continuous spiral. Rnds 2 and 3 Sc in BLO of each st around.
Weave in ends. •
