Springing into our new play-park
MP Wayne Long and the artist drawing of the new play-park for the Old North End (Photo courtesy NNCC) By Barry Galloway
We are so appreciative and excited for the addition of a play-park in the North End. MP Wayne Long announced the final piece of the puzzle at the ONE Change AGM on April 21st. This announcement is the culmination of many years of effort and significant contributions from many different groups. The project really began with the Kiwanis Club and RiverCross, who approached ONE Change with the idea of creating this for kids in our neighbourhood. RiverCross donated the land and the Kiwanis gave $50,000, and then it was down to work. The total project cost was around $300,000, but through many contributions from many partners we had almost achieved its goal. The big investment needed to get us to the finish line was this amazing commitment from ACOA (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency). Thank you to MP Wayne Long and to the Government of Canada for this incredible gift to our North End children. I know our afterschool program children will make great use of it. Tremendous leadership, Wayne, you are a credit to our community.

Living SJ Update - Investment of $10 million to address generational poverty in Saint John
Coordinator’s Comments Juanita Black, We are please to present issue 53 of Around the Block for your reading enjoyment.
by Donna Gates, Executive Director
You will see we have partnered with Port Saint John in welcoming you to their Port Days, June 4th on the water-front. All proceeds from this day go to support the very important PALS programs.
The provincial government is investing $10 million over five years to create a fund aimed at ending generational poverty in Saint John. The fund will be managed by Living SJ and will test new approaches to reducing poverty. All the projects supported by the fund will be evidence-based and evaluated to determine impact. The fund will not replace current government investments in community programs with the goal of ending generational poverty in Saint John.
Throughout the paper you will read how our communities and partners are planning their summer activities and updating you on their ongoing events. We have given you some important information, from summer safety tips in both English and Arabic, to how to join the food purchase club. Also the very important is the food helpers calendar on page 13 from the Human Development Council. This is a guide that will help you to work through all the community organizations that offer programs from food banks, important-to-know contact phone numbers and daily dropin food stations.
“This fund is a game-changer for our community,” said Living SJ executive director Donna Gates. “It will demonstrate how government, business, non-profits and neighbourhoods can work together to bring about change.” Living SJ aims to begin receiving applications for the fund beginning this fall.

by Carrie Griffin
I am super-excited to announce our two summer programs at the Nick Nicolle Community Center (NNCC). Our younger kids (ages 6-11) will start at 12 p.m. and end at 4 p.m. Our teens (ages 12 and up) get their own program this year from 5-9 p.m. We have some great activities planned throughout the summer, one being that both programs start with a barbecue everyday. We will be doing weekly outings to various places such as Rockwood Park, Buskers on the Boardwalk, and many more. Bring on summer! We will be welcoming our summer students. Stop in and say hi. If you wish to volunteer or donate to our summer programs please call the center at 658-2980.
Summer fun
What a successful year for our Believe and Achieve night programs. We have so many individuals that made this year outstanding. Thank you. Our children gained diverse skills in the last year, but the main one was having fun. This has inspired our children to believe in themselves and give them self-assurance to achieve their goals. If you know anyone that has a hobby or talent that could teach our children please let us know. We would be honoured to have them Pictured front Kinsi Boyce - Stewbe a part of the change. Let’s build art, back left to right, Jarah Breen our children to be leaders and show and William Phillips (photo courtesy NNCC) them they are awesome.
OLD North End days by Christa Petts
We are gearing up for Old North End Days. This year, we will be having our Old North End Days August 8th-12th. Five days of events and fun for the whole family. We are always looking for volunteers to help make our events special every year. It’s our community’s hard work and inspiration that truly makes our events unique. Last year, we introduced our first seniors tea as one of our events. Since then, we have had many seniors teas to really highlight our seniors. They are the heart of our community.

Proud Tyler Adams
Crescent Valley has been my home for most of my life. I’ve made lots of good memories here and look forward to many more.
My name is Tyler Adams and I am currently attending UNBF studying kinesiology on a full academic scholarship thanks to the Currie undergraduate scholarship. UNBF has been a challenging yet amazing experience and has opened many doors for me. I also work in the military as a medical assistant and this experience has Pictured above: Tyler Adams with his mother, interested me in the field of Shelly, and brother Andre medicine for the future. One of my interests is running, as I am a part of the varsity track and crosscountry team for UNB. We are so proud
by Crescent Valley Resource Centre
Crescent Valley Resource Centre (CVRC) recently received not one, but two awards forthe work they do in the community. An Outstanding Community Partnership Award from the SJMNRC was presented to CVRC at their annual Volunteer Appreciation event. This award is to “honour their (individuals and organizations) generosity of spirit, and dedication in building and facilitating successful programs and events for our newcomers in the greater Saint John area...” CVRC was one of several organizations to be recognized provincially by Horizon Health Network (HHN) for work to promote and improve health in the community. The Community Health Recognition Award includes a $500 donationto CVRC! The announcement was made at the Horizon Health Network public board meeting in Miramichi in April. Thank you to SJMNRC and to HHN for the vote of confidence; CVRC board and staff are so happy we are able to contribute to the effort to assist newcomers in our community, and to help in the effort to bring food security to residents.

Those who have volunteered found it to be an enjoyable and rewarding experience. We also have a mobile office on Fridays at the CV Resource Centre; drop by and talk to us. There is a wide range of events the Community Response Unit (CRU) will be participating in this summer. Also, the CRU gets called into action when crisis strikes - such as fires and floods. A group of grade 5 girls enrolled in the Fit, Fun and Fierce program at St Patrick’s Elementary School were delighted to spend an hour recently with local restaurant owner Holly Singh. They were treated to a tour and had the opportunity to taste some delicious food. They also had time to ask Holly questions about women in business and what it takes to follow your dream and be successful. It seems that a few of the young ladies might be inspired to follow in her footsteps! Thank you for being a role model for these young ladies and for all that you give back to the community, Holly Singh.

Special thanks to all of the community partners, parents, individuals, and student volunteers who made this event possible. by Wendy Coughlin
Spring arrived at 880 Danells Drive. Our gardeners are getting their raised vegetable beds ready for planting. We make good use of our greenhouse as well. Through trial and error over the past four or five years I have found out that root vegetables such as beets and carrots do not do as well for me as green or yellow beans, peas, tomatoes, and lettuce. This year I will be concentrating on these plants. Due to the closing of Seawood School, this is the last year that we will be hosting the students for our annual marigold planting. It is with great sadness that we see this end. This was an event enjoyed by both students and residents. In June we will have a Fathers’ Day event. In July we will be celebrating Canada Day and in mid-July we hope to have a live entertainment outdoor event.

Spring into summer
by Susan Tipper, PALS High School Coordinator
It is hard to believe that the school year is coming to a close! Where does the time go? The En Route to Success Program is pleased to share that we will have 23 students at work placements throughout the summer. These students have all spent time at their worksites during the school year. Employers assign a work site supervisor to act as a mentor for each student. Students have the opportunity to learn and satisfy curriculum outcomes through hands-on learning. All 23 students have been offered summer employment at their work sites. We thank all of our partners for participating in this program. The positive impact you have on the lives of these students is immeasurable. We wish all of you a safe and happy summer!

HVHS reunion
Mondays on Strawberry Lane
by Adam Masson, HVHS Alumni
June 24, 2017 will mark 92 years since the physical cornerstone, of what is now Harbour View High School, was laid. For over 70 years, the building served as Saint John Vocational School, or "Voc" to many. Even after the school became HVHS in 1997, the "Voc" Alumni served as the spiritual cornerstone of the school and continued to support the school, its staff, and its students. That support continues now, and will continue into the future. The SJVS Alumni has shown that support by providing students with scholarships, bursaries, and receptions. They have helped out HVHS sports teams and choir trips. They have done an awful lot for this school, our school, YOUR school. After 20 years and over 3000 graduates, it's time for HVHS Alumni to pitch in and give back, and follow the exceptional example set by the SJVS Alumni. We have a very high standard to live up to and the only way we can do that is with each other's help. The All-Class Reunion on June 24th, at HVHS, is about more than just seeing your old friends or your old teachers. It's about giving back to a school that is a part of all of us, and about building and strengthening the HVHS Community. It's about looking toward tomorrow, and paying it forward to future generations of HVHS Students. For more information on the HVHS All-Class Reunion (1997-2017) visit www.hvhsalumni.com

"Mondays On Strawberry Lane" was officially launched April 1, 2017 at Market Square Public Library, Saint John NB, with a full capacity audience, as well as great interest and success. Back in 2002, on a Monday afternoon, a small group of women were joined together by a mutual desire to create poetry at the home of Mary Lou Joyce on Fundy Drive, once known as ‘Strawberry Lane’, on the west side of Saint John. Fifteen years later they still meet on a regular basis. The poems in this collection are a celebration of many splendid Monday afternoons.

Every Tuesday after school students have been learning how to cook with volunteer; Master Chefs. During this eight-week program, the students learn a different recipe every week that they can bring home to share with their family. They learn basic cooking skills such as cleaning, cutting, mixing, and adding spices. The theme for the program was “Dealing with the pantry that you are dealt with”. This theme Pictured above: Jayden Nyers and Diane O’Connor. Maggie Rice was perfect for our elementary(photo courtesy Debbie McLeod) aged students who are just learning how to cook.
The Charlton Place community room was an electric buzz on Monday, May 15th . The Charlton Place and Stephenson Tower Tenant Association hosted their first annual honours and awards banquet. The Association wanted to recognize all their volunteers and community partners who have been so loyal over the years. Forty-five volunteer recognition certificates were handed out and three community plaques were presented to Portland United Church, UNBSJ Nursing Department and First United Pentecostal Church. The highlight of the evening was introducing an award named after a resident who passed away who exemplified the word volunteer in her community, Paulette Collrin. So the first ever Paulette Collrin Memorial Volunteer Award was given to a person who shared Paulette’s love for community, strong work ethic, and love for people. This year’s recipient went to Raymond McGaghey. We were all overwhelmed with emotion as he accepted his award. The Tenant Association was very happy with the event and is anxious to do it again next year. Thanks you all for attending.

Thank you, volunteers by Debbie McLeod and Barry Freeze
On Monday, May 8th Barry Freeze with the City of Saint John and I, Debbie McLeod, from Social Development held a Volunteer Appreciation event at RiverCross Church. We invited valuable volunteers who are working so hard in each of their neighbourhoods to attend. We had Delbert Worden who entertained us for two hours and lots of great food to eat. We had a special appearance by Helen Bridgeo and the Crescent Valley Choir! The afternoon was filled with lots of dancing, eating, and singing. Thank you to our volunteers. We could not continue to strengthen our communities without your commitment and hard work.

Enjoying the arts
by Crescent Valley Resource Centre
During the month of April, community members from the five priority neighbourhoods had the chance to attend two performances at the Imperial Theatre. The first show was Swan Lake, a ballet about a German prince and princess. Eighty-one people from around the city had the opportunity to see this world-famous ballet. Kathy Hanna from the Crescent Valley neighbourhood said that she really enjoyed the show. The other performance was Immortal Chi. This is a mixed martial arts theatrical performance with drums, gongs, and even dancing. Many families said how exciting and fast-moving the showwas; they enjoyed every minute. Thank you to the Imperial Theatre for providing this great opportunity.
Rhythm and Brew
Célébrez la journée canadienne du multiculturalisme avec nous le 27 juin et marchez avec nous le 1 juillet! Multicultural Gallery Hop with the SJMNRC Newcomers were invited to join Volunteer Bonnie Fordham to the city’s Gallery Hop on May 12th. Bonnie shared words of wisdom with her students: ‘’All you need are comfortable shoes.’’ The group had the opportunity to meet local artists and comment on various works at the several venues participating in this year’s Hop. Did you miss this month’s Hop? No worries, the next one is on August 18th.

by Katherine Miller The 2017 Rhythm & Brew singing group has retired...for now! The group began singing together in January under the direction of Debbie Harrity. Members were encouraged to add their favourite songs to the set list – the songs ranged from Elvis Presley to John Denver. We met at the Crescent Valley Resource Centre to practice each week, and throughout the ten weeks, there was definitely a lot of improvement. Our concert was held at Stephenson Towers on April 10th. We had a great turnout and were so happy we could share some of our favourite songs with others. A big thank you to the Department of Social Development, Debbie Harrity and to the members of the singing group for their dedication each week.
