The 2016 census revealed some stark population numbers for New Brunswick. All data in the comparative profile is from Statistics Canada, 2016 Census of Population

Ours was the only province to lose population between 2011 and 2016. While the Canadian population grew by over 1.6 million (a 5.0% increase) during that 5 year period, NB's population decreased by -0.5% - dropping by 4070, from 751,171 in 2011 to 747,101 in 2016. Ages 0-4

The province's population loss was unevenly distributed. Ten of the province's twelve CINs experienced population loss - from -1.1%in Region 11 to -5% in Region 5. The only CINs that increased their population were Region 1 (3.3%) and Region 3 (2.5%).

While seniors make up 16.9% of the national population, New Brunswick's senior population of 148,785 accounts for 19.9% of its population. According to the 2016 census, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick were tied for the highest percentage of residents over 65 years old 19.9%. The province also has a smaller portion of residents under the age of 15 than the rest of the country. While the national rate of the population under 15 years old is 5.4%, the provincial rate is 4.6%. CIN 4 had the lowest rate in 2016: 2.8%.
