A year ago, during our 15th Anniversary in 2022, I outlined several key initiatives and projects as we sought to build on our first 15 years onto the next 15 and beyond. In 2023, we set about our task to establish our Bilingual Programme in the Elementary School, develop our new Culture and Language Centre, plan our new SJI International Preschool in partnership with the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary, refurbish the canteen into a digital hangout for students, staff and parents and welcome our first batch of young talents under the SJI International-Lion City Sailors Elite Development Scholarship programme. 2023 was truly an exciting and momentous year and we hope to build on the momentum into 2024.
With the various new projects and programmes, 2023 also provided the school Board and Management time to reflect on and reaffirm our core values and commitment to ensuring that SJI International remains a community of “Happy Kids” where our students, be they 7 or 17, learn and grow in a conducive and nurturing environment. At SJI International, the process of learning has never been limited to just imbibing textbook information in a classroom but extends most particularly to the honing of life skills - values, linguistics, problem-solving, socialisation and working in teams. We believe that such attributes will engender true Lasallian men and women who have entered SJI International to learn and who will leave the school upon graduation ready and able to serve others. We will continue to inculcate in our students the virtue of caring for the Last, the Least and the Lost in the community.
Our youngest members of the community in the Elementary School walked, jogged or ran an impressive 2,744 kilometres during the Lapathon to raise over $20,000 for the Lasallian Community Education Services (LCES) in Sri Lanka. This noble endeavour epitomises our steadfast commitment to effecting tangible change in the lives of others. Well done to the Elementary School students, parents and teachers for the wonderful gesture!
At our High School, our students resumed their service learning projects that had been interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The students demonstrated remarkable resilience and determination as they participated in projects in Singapore, across Asia, and Australia. Notable initiatives included our annual Hair for Hope event, which raised over $55,000 for the Children’s Cancer Foundation. This event showcased the courage and compassion of 35 volunteers who shaved their heads in solidarity with families and children impacted by cancer and ten students who donated their hair to create wigs for cancer patients. Our Leading Young Women service group received the prestigious EARCOS Richard T. Krajczar Humanitarian Award for addressing period poverty, earning a US$10,000 grant.
The Class of 2023 followed in the footsteps of their seniors by returning another excellent scorecard for the IB examinations. Each year, we take immense pride in our graduating cohorts with their diverse talents and backgrounds, coming together and helping one another to excel. As we bid a fond farewell to our Class of 2023 as they move on to the next phase of their lives, we hope that the adage “Once a Lasallian, Always a Lasallian” rings true for them as it has for so many generations before them. May they keep SJI International in their hearts and minds as they continue on their journey as Men and Women for Others.

Offering a holistic and internationally-focused education to a diverse cohort of over 2,000 students from approximately 45 different nationalities, our inclusive community welcomes students, teachers, parents, friends, and supporters of all faiths and cultural backgrounds.
SJI International is one of just three schools in Singapore with a licence to educate both Singaporean and international students at the High School level. It was founded by a dedicated team of St. Joseph’s Institution (SJI) alumni who were inspired by their own transformative educational experiences at SJI, one of Singapore’s oldest and most esteemed schools. They sought to provide a similar life-changing education to Singaporean and expatriate children that mould students into exemplary individuals when entering society.
SJI International comprises a High School which opened in 2007 followed by an Elementary School which opened in 2008. Both schools are part of a group of seven Lasallian institutions in Singapore, with a rich history dating back to 1852. The school is overseen by the SJI International Board of Governors, comprised largely of SJI alumni. Dr Tony Tan,
former President of the Republic of Singapore, Mr Teo Chee Hean, Senior Minister and Coordination Minister for National Security, Mr Mah Bow Tan, former cabinet minister and former politician, and Mr George Yeo sit as the school’s patrons.
The De La Salle Christian Brothers have played a significant role in the success of SJI and SJI International. The Lasallian Brotherhood embodies the tradition of St. John Baptist de La Salle, the French priest who founded this order of religious Brothers in 1680 with a mission to bring education to all, particularly “the last, the lost, and the least.” Faith, community, and service are the cornerstone values of the Lasallian tradition, which is upheld by around 3,000 Lasallian Brothers and over 100,000 Lasallian teachers in over 75 countries worldwide.
International is a non-profit rooted in the Lasallian Catholic tradition.
We are a school where people are important and relationships are valued, underpinned by our school values of Faith, Service, Community, Excellence and Respect. Our team of dedicated and compassionate teachers aim always to create a stimulating learning environment where children can flourish in a safe and nurturing atmosphere.
Our students are empowered to be kind, knowledgeable, resilient and critical thinkers. We aim to inspire an enthusiasm and curiosity for learning. We encourage the pursuit of excellence and achievement of personal best in all endeavors.
We are proud of our Lasallian Catholic heritage and offer many opportunities for Catholic children to explore and deepen their faith. They may participate in weekly catechism classes, daily prayers and weekly Mass in the school chapel. We also offer classes for preparation for the sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Communion.
Our ethos, values and principles have a firm foundation in the Catholic faith and the 342-year tradition of the De La Salle Brothers.
Our school is proud to have over 45 nationalities represented in our student body. We are a school where the faith and traditions of each child are respected and celebrated.
The character education programme, underpinned by The Virtues Project™ and the school values, provide the vehicle for character development and, being non-denominational, is appropriate for all students regardless of their family’s culture, faith and traditions.
The religious education programme we offer is intended to deepen a student’s conviction in their own belief, as well as to create a deeper understanding and appreciation of people’s differences, religious and cultural, to make the world a more peaceful place.
We stimulate the inter-religious relationship by including the study of Lasallian tradition and heritage within the religious education curriculum.

Service Learning is central in defining who we are and what we want our students to become. SJI International strives to nurture open-hearted and open-minded students who have a strong sense of purpose, belonging and social responsibility.
From Prep 1, students are encouraged to participate in whole school service events, which support our chosen Global Initiative Programme with our charity of choice, the Lasallian Community Education Services (LCES), in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The LCES supports the Henamulla preschool, which has 150 children and is supported by seven teachers. Our Elementary Parents Support Group (EPSG) are key supporters of our Global Initiative Programme. Working with the school staff, they bring the community together to host the annual Lapathon. Throughout the year we also celebrate, raise awareness, and much needed fund raise for other charities in Singapore and abroad.
Once children reach the Upper Elementary School, they start working towards their CASS Awards. This stands for Community, Activity, Sport and Service and is used to encourage children to push themselves outside of their comfort zone and give up their time to help others both in our school community and beyond. For each badge at Bronze and Silver level, children have to carry out 3 acts of Service, such as a sponsored event or volunteer for a day. Those children who reach Gold level have to plan and carry out their own independent service project, making their own contacts with agencies and working out logistics of supplies.
2023 has been a year of extraordinary achievements in our High School service learning programme as well, from addressing critical social issues to fostering global citizenship, our students have left an indelible mark on communities near and far.
At the forefront of their success was the inspiring Leading Young Women service group. This dedicated team, committed to “empowering young women to be fearless leaders of change,” received the prestigious Richard T. Krajczar Humanitarian Award from the East Asia Regional Council of Schools (EARCOS). Their outstanding efforts to combat period poverty earned them a well-deserved grant
of US$10,000. This recognition highlights their unwavering dedication to creating meaningful change and their ability to inspire others to join their cause.
‘Aku Bisa’ (‘I can’), was another standout in our service learning in 2023, honoured with The Global Citizenship Community Service Grant Award, valued at $500. This service project developed a technology-based entrepreneurial curriculum service for underprivileged teenagers in rural Indonesia, showcasing the power of innovation in transforming communities.
Aside from the standout achievements, all High School students, from Grades 7 to 12, actively engaged in various service learning projects tailored to their educational level and interests, guided by dedicated tutors and service leaders through the stages of investigation, preparation, action, reflection, and demonstration.
Grade 7 students partnered with the Water and Health Foundation in Cambodia to improve water sanitation, integrating this with their Geography curriculum; Grade 8 students addressed United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs) through projects on recycling, food, fashion, plastic, and energy, fostering responsibility and global citizenship; Grade 9 students worked towards the NYAA Bronze award by volunteering with organisations such as Touch Homecare, Cheshire Homes, and Mountbatten Vocational School, supporting the elderly, disabled, and visually impaired; Grade 10 students aimed for the FCAS/ NYAA Silver award by leading the Conservation Matters project, raising environmental awareness among their peers and our IB Diploma Programme students fulfilled their CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) requirements with personalised projects, which culminated in a presentation for parents and the SJI International community.
The achievements of 2023 reflect the power of service learning in shaping compassionate, innovative, and socially responsible individuals. Our students’ dedication to making a difference, whether through local initiatives or global collaborations, exemplifies the true spirit of our community.
HIGHLIGHTS
SJI International offers a myriad of activities beyond the classroom, enabling students to pursue their talents and passions while acquiring invaluable life skills. From the rhythm of dance and music to the grit of football and rock climbing, and from the challenge of chess to the World Scholar’s Cup, students have a diverse range of choices with opportunities for competition at both intra- and inter-school levels.
Students in the Elementary School start CCAs from Prep 2, where they are offered a curated selection of CCAs to begin their enrichment journey. In Grades 1 - 6 students are offered a vast array of CCAs from the field of Sports, Visual Arts, Performing Arts, Academics, Environment and Sustainability, Digital Technology, Martial Arts and Robotics. Catechism classes are also offered through the CCA programme.
The ACSIS sports programme allows students to represent the school in competition with other international schools in Singapore.
The Elementary School boasts an extensive Orchestra and Choir, as well as some ensembles. In-school music tuition covers guitar, drums, violin, piano, cello, flute, clarinet, trumpet, saxophone, and voice coaching, with 97 students participating in peripatetic sessions in 2023.
Some highlights of the year included the development of the eSports and Chess teams, which both participated in their first competitions. Expectations are to expand these teams further in 2024.
In 2023, the High School CCA programme introduced new activities such as engineering, woodworking, rock climbing, Investing 101, the Digital Media Club, and the Mock Trial Club. A significant number of new direct and indirect service initiatives were also added, including the Attollo Project, which supports patients with dementia at Tan Tock Seng Hospital, as well as Blue Dragon and the Sustainability Squad.
The programme consistently offers more than 150 unique opportunities each term to nurture all students’ interests and ensure we live out our mission, vision, and values. Each year, we strive to introduce more student-led CCAs that are relevant and contemporary, promoting leadership opportunities.

In the tapestry of our collective journey at St. Joseph Institution (SJI) International, 2023 shines as a vibrant thread, woven with the spirit of aspiration, achievement, and the profound impact of scholarships and bursaries.
It is with a heart full of pride and gratitude that I share with you our community’s achievements. The Class of 2023 stands as a testament to our unwavering commitment to excellence, with 209 students attaining the full International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma. Yet, amidst the accolades, our Scholarship Programme embodies the very essence of our mission.
Since its inception in 2007, our Scholarships and Bursaries Programme has offered more than financial assistance; it has provided hope, bridges to opportunity, and pathways to dreams fulfilled. With over $26 million awarded to nearly 300 deserving students, our scholar’s have not only changed lives but enriched our community with diverse voices, perspectives, and talents. The stories of our past scholarship recipients echo with the resonance of possibility. From prestigious scholarships like the Public Service Commission (PSC) overseas merit scholarships to admissions at the hallowed halls of Harvard, Stanford, MIT, Yale, Cambridge, and Oxford, their journeys inspire us to reach ever higher, dream ever bigger, and dare to defy the limits of our potential.
In 2023, we fulfilled our promise of ‘Building on 15’ with the launch of the SJI International-Lion City Sailors Elite Development Scholarship, an attestation to our enduring
dedication to holistic development. By nurturing Singapore’s footballing talents both academically and athletically, we’ve expanded the horizons of opportunity and embraced the transformative power of inclusivity.
Looking ahead to 2024, our vision for the Scholarship Programme burns bright with promise. We are poised to celebrate, empower, and uplift the next generation of scholars, leaders, and changemakers.
As Lasallians, we are bound by a sacred covenant: to make education accessible to all and to light the path for those who dare to dream. The SJI International Scholarship Programme is a manifestation of our collective commitment to shaping a future where every child, regardless of circumstance, can soar to the heights of their potential.
To our donors, partners, faculty, and staff, I extend the deepest gratitude for your unwavering support and boundless generosity. Your contributions are investments in humanity, compassion, and the promise of a brighter tomorrow.
Kenneth Li Chairman, Scholarship Committee St. Joseph’s Institution International
As a Lasallian Catholic school, SJI International strives to bring education to all, especially the last, the lost and the least.
The SJI International Scholarship Programme was established to encourage academically inclined individuals, regardless of their background to access quality education so that they can reach their full potential. The programme has played an important role in allowing SJI International to become a school that is widely recognised for its outstanding academic and holistic education in Singapore.
SJI International offers merit based means tested scholarships in order to ensure that the most suitable and deserving students in Singapore and the region can benefit from an SJI International education regardless of circumstances.
These 2-year, 3-year and 6-year scholarships cover school fees, other compulsory fees and miscellaneous expenses, and may include hostel and travel expenses as well as an allowance. Merit based means tested scholarships are financed by the SJI International Scholarships and Bursaries Fund, a registered charitable fund supported by public donations.
The school also offers merit based scholarships, based on academic performance, which include school fees only. These are funded by an annual allocation of a percentage of the High School’s operating surplus to the Scholarships and Bursaries Fund.
A highlight of 2023 was welcoming our first cohort of scholars into the SJI International - Lion City Sailors Elite Development Scholarship. This new scholarship provides Singapore footballing talent an opportunity to pursue both academic and sporting excellence in two best-in-class institutions
SJI International and Lion City Sailors Football Academy.

It is with much gratitude and respect that I extend my best wishes to each of you. As stewards of the Lasallian Mission, it is our duty and fidelity to strive for an environment where every individual can flourish and realise potential and to create the spaces for this to occur.
The development of our High School facilities reflects our belief in renewal and growth to meet the needs of education of children as society evolves. Concomitantly, development has to be undertaken with climate change in focus. This has been reflected in our recently completed developments.
The High School Assembly Hall has been renovated to also serve as a multi-purpose performance venue to provide students with the space and milieu for artistic creativity and collaboration.
The School has changed the playing surface of the Lower Field to artificial turf to facilitate greater availability for physical activities and team sports. The artificial turfing will permit easier drainage and make the Lower Field less susceptible to wet weather.
The High School Canteen has been rebuilt to not only improve the environment of our students at mealtimes but to also serve as a centre for the facilitation and exchange in digital attainment. By combining a space typically associated as social and outside the classroom together with the cyber world we
hope to foster a wider sharing of ideas and knowledge in technology in a collaborative and informal setting.
The Culture and Language Centre is progressing and is expected to be functional within the next year. Upon its completion the School will have both the infrastructure and faculty to facilitate learning.
Our future development plans will continue to be governed by the needs of our students, the Lasallian Mission and the vision of the School.
In conclusion, I must thank all our staff, parents, and students for their service, patience and cooperation which has been so important and pivotal in enabling our campus development. There remains more to be done and I am certain that the support will be forthcoming from all our stakeholders in true Lasallian spirit.

The Building and Development Fund (BDF) is pivotal in advancing our school’s major development works and managing expenses, leveraging the school’s reserves to ensure continuous growth and improvement. The BDF is integral to our mission of fostering an environment where every individual can flourish and realise their full potential.
In 2023, the fund primarily supported three projects:
1. Astro-turfing of the lower field,
2. Upgrading the school’s ICT hardware and software, and
3. Minor renovations of administrative offices and learning spaces.
As an international school dedicated to the Lasallian Mission, SJI International is committed to providing top-tier education and facilities. The Building and Development Fund is crucial in this endeavour, ensuring our infrastructure meets the evolving needs of our students and faculty. This fund allows us to undertake essential projects that enhance our educational environment, promote sustainability, and support the holistic development of our students.
This year, key projects have included renovating the High School Assembly Hall into a multi-purpose performance space, converting the Lower Field to artificial turf for improved usability and drainage, and reconstructing the High School Canteen to enhance the dining environment and create a hub for digital learning and collaboration. These upgrades reflect our commitment to providing a dynamic and sustainable learning environment for all.
We are excited about the ongoing development of the Culture and Language Centre, which is expected to be completed within the next year. This new facility will enhance our capacity to offer immersive learning experiences, which is in line with our commitment to holistic education.
Future development plans will continue to be shaped by the needs of our students, the guiding principles of the Lasallian Mission, and the school’s vision. The Building and Development Fund remains a cornerstone of our strategy to create a conducive learning environment as we strive to realise our shared vision for SJI International.
