WHO WE ARE

St. Joseph’s Institution (SJI) International, founded in 2007, is a privately funded Catholic school. It was started by the De La Salle Brothers and alumni of SJI. SJI’s roots date back to 1852 as the third oldest secondary school in Singapore and has a longstanding reputation for offering a high quality holistic and balanced education that emphasises character formation and leadership development. Over its history, SJI has produced many leaders for the community in diverse sectors such as government, business, academia, church and the community. Our distinguished alumni include former President Tony Tan Keng Yam, Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean, DBS Chairman Peter Seah, Senior Counsel Davinder Singh and the Makan Sutra food critic KF Seetoh. These are leaders who have empathy and compassion and who can be effective bridges across races and religions. SJI International offers a holistic and balanced education that nurtures students to learn how to learn and to learn how to live, so that they can be people of integrity and people for others. The school prepares students for the 2-year International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) examinations. The 2021 cohort of 198 graduates scored an average of 39.3 points, our highest so far at SJI International. Our average is significantly above the 2020 world average for IB Diploma students of 29.59 points. 54.8% of our students achieved 40 points or more, a result only achieved by only 15.6% of students worldwide in November 2020. In addition to this, 36.0% of the Class of 2021 achieved 42 to 45 points or more. In its short history of 13 years of IBDP graduates, the school has students who have gone on to win various scholarships including the prestigious PSC (Public Service Commission) overseas merit scholarships, and to gain admission into top universities such as Harvard University, Stanford University, MIT, Yale University, Cambridge University and Oxford University. Graduates from SJI International have been accepted into some of the most competitive courses in Singapore universities, for example, Dentistry, Law and Medicine at the National University of Singapore.

SJI INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION THE LASALLIAN DIFFERENCE In addition to preparing our Scholars to do well academically for the IBDP examinations, they are offered a high quality education that allows them the opportunities to discover their interests and talents in a caring, respectful and inclusive community which strongly emphasises character and leadership development. As a Lasallian school, our scholars learn to have faith, whatever their faith tradition may be, i.e. to believe in themselves, in others, and in a God. Our scholars live out their faith by actively showing concern for those who are less fortunate in our society.

Recognised Qualification for University Studies The IB Diploma is a recognised qualification for admission into undergraduate programmes at local and international universities. The IBDP offers a broad-based education that prepares our scholars well for university studies. They will offer six subjects from six subject groups comprising two Languages, Sciences, Mathematics, Humanities and the Arts. They will also follow a Theory of Knowledge (TOK) course, complete an extended essay and participate in Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS).

Nurturing and Caring Teachers Our SJI International teachers are not only highly qualified but are also nurturing and caring. They take the time to get to know our Scholars as individuals. They adopt a child-centred and active learning approach to support our Scholars in their learning so that they can realise their full potential.

Holistic Development with Choice and Flexibility At SJI International, our Scholars get to choose their six subjects based on their interests and the university courses that they are planning to gain admission into. They will take 3 subjects at standard level and 3 subjects at higher level. Theory of Knowledge will help our scholars to integrate their learning and give them a strong foundation in ways of knowing in their respective subject disciplines. The extended essay is a 4000-word paper based on independent and self-directed research on a selected topic of interest or passion in one of the subject disciplines. The extended essay helps our Scholars to develop critical thinking, communication and research skills that will give them a head start in university studies. Our Scholars’ participation in CAS will help them to enhance their personal and interpersonal development through experiential learning. They will get to choose from a wide range of CAS activities and to even initiate their own CAS activities in consultation with the teachers.

Strong Service Learning Dimension As a Lasallian institution, our Scholars enter to learn and leave to serve. Our Scholars will have many opportunities to participate in service learning locally and in the region so that they can make a difference in the lives of others.

International Learning Environment Our Scholars will be learning in an international environment where they will have opportunities to interact and learn with fellow students from 40 different countries. This will allow our Scholars to develop cultural sensitivities which will give them an edge in their future work place. SJI International truly offers an international education for Singapore and PR Scholars in the safety and familiarity of home without the need to go overseas.

Lasallian Network In Singapore, SJI International is linked with 6 other Lasallian schools as part of the legacy of our founder, St John Baptist de La Salle. SJI International is part of a larger Lasallian network of approximately 900 schools in about 84 countries.

OUR FORMER SCHOLARS

JOHN OOI • Class of 2009 • Bachelor of Economics from the University of Queensland • Currently Student Development Manager at SJI International Malaysia

“The SJI International Scholarship was nothing short of life-changing. I remember joining the school just after my mother had passed away. It was also the first time that I had left home, so there were a lot of challenges... Nevertheless, with the guidance of my teachers and the admin staff of the school, I completed the IB Diploma Programme and secured a full tuition fee scholarship at The University of Queensland.”

AMANDA ANG • Class of 2010 • BS in Agricultural and Consumer Economics, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (USA), 2015 • MS in Agricultural and Applied Economics, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2017 • PhD student, Economics, University of Southern

“The SJI International scholarship allowed me to receive education under the IB philosophy. The most valuable thing I got from my time at SJI International is a “growth mindset.” I felt that I could join a choir, play a sport, learn a new language even if I had never done it before because we were all there to learn how to learn. This growth mindset has given me confidence in taking on a rigorous academic career in economics.”

BRIAN THENG • Class of 2012 • BA (Literae Humaniores), University of Oxford, 2019 • MPhil (Classics), University of Cambridge, 2020 • Currently Senior Associate, Family Capital & Impact at the Singapore Economic Development Board

“The scholarship opened many doors for me, and my SJII experience remains fundamental to my academic performance and personal values. I made lasting friends at SJII who, despite diverse career paths across the world, remain in contact and continue to be sources of meaningful friendship. The mentorship by teachers, counsellors, and staff at SJII continues to inspire me towards ideals of service and kindness. More generally, the IB programme and SJII’s pedagogy grounded in me a holistic outlook towards learning and experiences, which enabled me to take full advantage of my university education and work experience.”

CLIONA YONG • Class of 2013 • Anthropology, Yale-NUS, 2018 • Research Executive at NUS, FASS, Social Service Research Centre

“[The scholarship I received] gave me opportunities to study at an institution with great values, that focused on its students and not only the grades they could produce but their development as individuals in society as well. Lots of great CCAs to join too!”

“SJII’s holistic education allowed me to focus on developing my confidence as a person, whilst the teachers nurtured my intellectual vitality and encouraged me to discover interdisciplinary links between fields and pursue my passions beyond the classroom. As I begin my research at the intersections of behavioural/ public economics, law, and industrial organisation, there is no doubt in my mind that I owe so much of who I am (and what interests me!) today to the SJII scholarship and community.”

“The scholarship provided me with an opportunity I would have never been able to obtain financially, and so I will always be grateful for it. SJII was a place I learnt so many more lessons than simple academics, and it has definitely shaped my current world-view today. Although I did not expect to be studying Mathematics at University, I am finding it extremely fulfilling and therefore can have no regrets about my path. I would also like to once again thank SJII for the opportunity it gave me.”

“The SJI International scholarship opened up opportunities for me that I would not have been able to access without the generosity of the sponsors of the programme or the school. It is a great blessing and privilege to be able to attend a school without me having to worry about the economic pressures normally associated with receiving an education. I learned so much from the compassionate and patient teachers who I was taught by, and also grew so much from being surrounded by a loving and serving community.”

SOPHIA GOH Class of 2017 Studying Liberal Arts at Yale-NUS College

RITIK CHAMOLA • Class of 2019 • Double major in Linguistics and Computer Science at Yale University

“I firmly believe that an SJI International education has the potential to be whatever you want it to be; during my time in school, I experienced service-learning firsthand, teaching music lessons at a UWS school in Koh Chreum, Cambodia, and later joining eyecare drives at a children’s home in Western Thailand. As a member of the Student Council, I had the opportunity to exercise my leadership and teamwork abilities through school-wide initiatives such as Wellbeing Week. These are just the drop in the metaphorical bucket of opportunities available to the SJI International student, and I am extremely grateful for having been able to take part in a few of them.”
