It’s the season for giving. That means thinking of others who are less fortunate and may have a hard time providing a good meal for their family and a few presents this Christmas. Local food banks are seeing a steady stream of people who need help. Ser vice organizations work hard every year to make sure families have a happy holiday season — from a food basket to toys for the kids. And they need your help.

The Anacortes 100 Food Bank is at 512 Fourth St. Call 293-6445 for information or to sign up to receive a basket. The Salvation Army is at 3001 R Ave., suite 100. Call 293-6682 for information on signing up. Those who want to help can drop off donations at either food bank or volunteer at the Salvation Army for a variety of tasks, including assembling food baskets, shopping for toys for the Giving Tree program or simply helping out at the food bank. Giving Cheer Hundreds of Anacortes kids found presents under their trees on Christmas morning last year because of the Salvation Army’s Giving Tree program. Tags on the trees give the names of children, their ages and their requests for specific items of clothing and toys. Giving Trees will be set up around town. Businesses and organizations are also encouraged to participate in the Adopta-Family program by providing food, gifts and all the basics that a family needs for Christmas. New items should be brought, unwrapped, to the Salvation Army building at 3001 R Ave. by Wednesday, Dec. 14 at the latest. Cash donations may also be dropped off at that address, or simply slipped into a bell ringer’s kettle. Volunteers will be posted in front of Safeway, The Market at Anacortes, Rite Aid, Walgreens and near the post office. Funds go to support the Salvation Army’s social services programs, including its food bank. goanacortes.com

What better way to celebrate the giving season than to buy presents for our six public schools? T

he Anacortes American newsroom got some gift ideas from principals and set out with $50 to spend on each school. The only requirements: shop local and at least try to stay in budget (that means no new playground equipment). Tooth boxes were a popular request (right now some students take their lost teeth home in envelopes) and art supplies were something several schools asked for. We had to get a little creative to fulfill some requests, which was part of the fun. With about a month left to get your Christmas shopping done, don’t forget to check your local shops — and think about donating to your favorite charity. ’Tis the season.

Loosing a tooth is a major event for any kid. I still have my special tooth pillow from when I was young. I remember carefully putting the tooth inside and trying hard to fall asleep so the Tooth Fairy would come. I never did lose one at school. When leaders at Island View Elementary School and Whitney Early Childhood Education Center requested “nifty tooth boxes” my first thought was how fun it would be to find some. “The kids love them and most students lose a tooth at school sometime,” said Island View Principal Brian Hanrahan. “Right now we have envelopes, but we would love to have something a little nicer for the kids,” added Whitney Principal Kevin Schwartz. After some thinking I headed over to Read Me A Story. They had some cute pillows, like the one I had as a child, but that wasn’t quite what I was looking for to give out at the schools — though they’d be great at home. Owner Heather Miller suggested some small nautical-themed boxes with pillows inside meant just for teeth. I got the last four — at half price they cost me a total of $15.10. Next it was off to Boxes & Bears. I found some darling little boxes decorated with flowers, fish and geometric designs as well as some very girlie bejeweled ones. Hearing the gifts were for the schools, owner Dianne Moritz gave me a deal on boxes priced $2 to $4. I got 26 for a total cost of $56.45. After searching around town for more tooth boxes, someone suggested checking with a dentist. I took a stroll to Dr. Daniel Rasmussen’s family dentistry practice down the block and was surprised to be offered a bag of 100 neon-colored chests — at no charge. With some money still left thanks to the donation, I headed over the Watermark Book Co. for some tooth-related books. “What the Dickens: The Story of a Rogue Tooth Fairy” was recommended by staff. The reading level is age 9 and up — or it’s a nice one for parents to read to their kids. At $8.99 it’s a perfect addition to Island View’s library. Going with the tooth theme, I also ordered “The Tooth Book” by Dr. Seuss for the younger readers at Whitney. It was also $8.99. With $9 left over for the two schools I headed over to the Kiwanis Thrift Shop for two bask e t s . I thought it would be a cute way to display the tooth boxes and let kids pick their own. And I came in under budget. I bet there are some wiggly teeth at Island View and Whitney — and their owners will now get a delightful box to take them home in. — Kimberly Jacobson, staff writer

Anacortes Middle School Anne Chase-Stapleton, art teacher at Anacortes Middle School, made shopping for her art club kids as easy as a Christmas pie. She placed an order at Frontier Building Supply for a gallon of multi-purpose ceramic tile adhesive that her students will use to set mosaics. Also on the list were several pairs of safety glasses the kids wear while cutting glass and tile. All we had to do was pick up the order and hand over the $49.01 to the cashier — just about perfect for our budget. Chase-Stapleton’s class is going to make a permanent mosaic art piece for the middle school, so keep your eyes open for something pretty. Frontier, at 1911 Commercial Ave., has all the holiday gifts for that creative builder on your list whether it’s lumber, paint, hardware or how-to books on getting it all done. — Joan Pringle, staff writer

Fidalgo Elementary School Principal Tara Dowd said Fidalgo Elementary School could use a large bulletin board for the school’s entryway. They’d use it to display extracurricular information and newspaper articles featuring their students — which we really liked. We took the short stroll down Sixth Street from the Anacortes American office to Bayshore Office Products at 603 Commercial Ave. The store carries bulletin boards in a variety of sizes framed either in wood or metal. We chose the wood because it was prettier and with our budget of $50, were able to get a good-sized one at 4-feet-by-3-feet — well with only going over a little bit. The total with tax was $55.16. Already at our limit, we had to say no when Duane Remmenga asked if we needed push pins to go with the board. Well it turns out that Duane took on the holiday spirit a bit early this year and threw in a box of clear push pins for free. Back at the office, we tested the them out by pinning up a few articles featuring Fidalgo Elementary students — one a recent Question of the Week feature and another on the school’s Pennies for Peace fund drive for Afghanistan schools last year. You’ll never know what kind of Christmas presents you can find at Bayshore until you go. The store carries all kinds of office supplies, furniture, printers and fax machines. Tie a big red bow on it and you have the perfect gift for the office person in your group of family and friends. — Joan Pringle, staff writer

Mount Erie Elementary School Mount Erie Elementary School staff said the school could really benefit from new pottery glaze. What they had was old and dried up. We headed for Island Ceramics at 3015A Commercial Ave. The shop has an abundance of glaze along with unglazed and unfired pottery pieces in all shapes and sizes. One of our favorites was the chocolate drop Santa cookie jar with its big bottom and pointy hat at the top. Other items include figurines, Christmas tree decorations and magnets. Island Ceramics also has workshop space and kiln services for creating your own ceramic treasure to keep for yourself or to give away during the holiday season. Mary Jane Richardson, mom to owner Sandee Richardson, helped us pick out 18 2-ounce bottles of Duncan Concepts underglaze in a multitude of colors, including Dark Scarlet and Bright Caribbean. Mary Jane picked that type of glaze because of the age of the students who’ll be using them and the art program at the school. Each bottle cost $2.75 but that was before Mary Jane offered a 10 percent discount because the art supplies were going to the school. Our total tab was $48.20 with tax. Island Ceramics is open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. They hang out late on Tuesdays and Thursdays until 8 p.m. for people who want to get creative after a long day at work. — Joan Pringle, staff writer

Anacortes High School Anacortes High School Principal Jon Ronngren told me art supplies would be a nice stocking stuffer for two teachers. “We are tickled that we were selected for the Christmas gift,” said Candice Vitale, who teaches ceramics and glass design. She requested boron nitride, which is used to prime molds quickly for glass kiln forming. It prevents fused glass from sticking to the mold when fired. Vitale said in the past she’s had to heat up the stainless steel mold to 500 degrees, remove it from the kiln, spray the primer, reheat, spray, reheat, spray — a process taking a couple of hours. “With boron nitride spray, I can easily spray the mold in a few minutes without tying up the kiln and waiting,” she said. A trip over to Johnny Picasso’s was fruitful. Owner John Archibald ordered a bottle of spray boron nitride, a product he uses at the shop, for $22. Carl Dellutri, who teachers 2D art classes like painting and advanced art, asked for odorless mineral spirits for students who are oil painting. It’s something he usually buys himself. This was the easiest gift to buy. Directions from an employee at Ace Hardware had me in the right aisle. I bought 152 fluid ounces for $25.95. If you’re looking for a way to give back to the arts in schools, Dellutri said he could also use some charcoal and paper and Vitale could use a gallon of white glaze for her ceramics class. — Kimberly Jacobson, staff writer

Put your gifts under a tree that keeps on giving By Joan Pringle American staff writer

Purchasing a Christmas tree locally from either the Kiwanis Sunrisers or Eagles Aerie 249 and Ladies Auxiliary means money for local charities the two organizations help out. The Kiwanis Sunrisers will be based as usual in the parking lot at Sebo’s Do-It Best Center, 14th Street and Commercial Avenue. Last year the group had a variety of trees including noble, grand, Douglas, Shasta, Nordman and Fraser firs. Sales start sometime after Thanksgiving Day with approximate hours 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. The Eagles will man the nursery at Ace Hardware, 1720 Q Ave., where

they’ll be selling three types of trees — noble, Douglas and Fraser firs. Sizes will range from 2 to 9 feet and prices will be $15 and up. Ace owner Randy Burgess said the trees are grown and cut fresh near Mossyrock by Mount Rainier. Sales start the Saturday after Thanksgiving and continue through Christmas Eve or until they’re sold out. Trees will be sold during regular Ace business hours. Wreaths and garland by the foot will also be available. All the profits go to the Eagles charitable programs. The Ace nursery will be set up like a winter wonderland with Christmas lights, cider and cookies, Burgess said.

Blue Christmas tree will raise awareness for prostate health By Joan Pringle American staff writer Penny and Mark McCaughan won’t be decorating their Christmas tree with silver and gold this year. Instead they’ve chosen blue for the color of their ornaments. It all has to do with blue being the symbol of prostate cancer awareness. “We intend to decorate it tastefully,” McCaughan said. “But it will have a lot of blue items on it analogous to the pink associated with breast cancer.” The “Prostate Health Tree” will be on display at A Holly Jolly Christmas, the fifth annual Celebration of Trees presented by Island Hospital Foundation. The free event is noon to 8:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 2 at the Port of Anacortes Transit Shed Event Center. At 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3 the doors open again for the $50 reception and live auction where the dozen Christmas trees decorated by local businesses, service organizations and individuals will be auctioned off. Mark McCaughan is a retired urologist who practiced in Juneau, Alaska. He and Penny snowbird in Anacortes during the colder months and return to Juno during the warmer ones. Decorations on their prostate tree will include blue wrist bands, blue ribbon lapel pins, blue ribbon magnets and possibly some athletic gear such as T-shirts from marathons raising money for prostate cancer research. “I’d like to emphasize the purpose is to raise awareness for prostate cancer and increase support for those who have it,” McCaughan said. “And to counteract recent negative publicity about cancer screening.” McCaughan was referring to published opinions that the Prostate-Specific Antigen or PSA test, a blood screen that helps detect prostate cancer, is of questionable benefit. The controversy is similar to that concerning the benefits of mammograms. “Screening for prostate cancer is still an important thing,” McCaughan said. “Most urologists still feel that routine prostate screening is still very beneficial.”

Wednesday, November 23, 2011

“It’s also important to emphasize awareness and support,” he said. The McCaughans’ Christmas tree will be part of a raise-the-paddle event at the auction where participants raise their numbered paddles when the amount of money they want to donate is announced. A second raise-the-paddle tree will be a Women’s Heart Health Tree decorated by Soroptimist International of Anacortes. Profits from all the trees sold at the live auction and wreaths at the silent auction will go to the hospital’s community health screening program, which provides low-cost and no-cost health screenings to the public. Along with being a fundraiser, the event is a community-wide celebration of the holiday season. It brings hundreds of adults and children to the marine terminal to view the beautifully and uniquely decorated trees, enjoy live entertainment, savor cocoa and cookies and partake in holiday activities. The festivities include Santa pictures, Santa’s workshop and Battle Gingerbread, where groups compete in decorating the best gingerbread scene. Entertainment will be provided by The Bards of KeyPoynt, Children’s String Band, Class ACT Dance, Fidalgo Danceworks and Fidalgo Elementary carolers. Saturday’s reception will include cocktails and entertainment by the Trish Hatley Quintet. To purchase tickets or for more information, go to www.islandhospitalfoundation.org or call 299-4201.

Enjoy Celtic concert , boat parade By Joan Pringle American staff writer

The traveling trophy is up for grabs again for the best decorated boat in the annual Anacortes Lighted Boat Parade. Participants will head west on the Guemes Channel from the Cap Sante Boat Haven about 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10. Music will precede and follow the parade at the second annual Anacortes Celtic Christmas Community Concert at the Port of Anacortes Transit Shed Event Center. A 4 p.m. matinee is geared toward families and an evening concert is 6:30 p.m. The decorated boats will do a turnaround right by the Transit Shed on Pier 1. Seating for viewing the parade will be provided by the port. The Christmas concerts hosted by the port and Shell Puget Sound Refinery will feature reknowned violinist Geoffrey Castle. “The group that Castle has assembled for this year’s performances is truly extraordinary, including a return appearance by the nationally renowned Celtic dance and song trio the Gothard Sisters and of course Santa Claus,” said organizer Linda Ann Lipke. This event is free to the public with a suggested donation of an unwrapped new toy or nonperishable food item. Money raised will be donated to Toys for Tots, community food banks and Anacortes Youth Arts. Reserved VIP seating is available for a suggested donation of $25 and can be purchased through Brown Paper tickets at www.brownpapertickets.com or (800) 838-3006.

‘The Nutcracker Ballet’ delights audiences of all ages

Photos courtesy of KP Studios

By Joan Pringle American staff writer

A new backdrop crafted by volunteers will set the stage for Act 1, Scene 1 of this year’s production of “The Nutcracker Ballet” by Fidalgo DanceWorks. Artist Ruby Tanaka, who designed the new backdrop for the Christmas Eve party scene, created one previously for the Land of Sweets in the second act, said DanceWorks Executive Director Glynna Goff. The two backdrops, designed similarly, tie the production together.

“The Nutcracker” is 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10 and 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 11 at Anacortes High School’s Brodniak Hall. Tickets are $15 reserved seating and $10 festival. The studio’s Winter Celebration, a holiday dance concert for all ages, is 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3 at Brodniak Hall. Tickets are $10. Tickets for either show will be available at the door and at Fidalgo DanceWorks, 901 Third St. The party scene’s canvas backdrop is 16 feet tall and 55 feet wide. It was sewn together by studio moms and other volunteers, Goff said. Tanaka’s design was then traced from a computerized rendering by Marsh Tackett projected onto the canvas as it hung at Brodniak Hall. “Our parent group has been helping to do block painting, leaving the detail work to Ruby,” Goff said. “Joan Meyer has contributed an extraordinary amount of time to painting as well as her daughter Kimberly Meyer who is dancing our Nutcracker this year.” The canvas has images of a Victorian home, complete with fireplace, grandfather clock and holiday decorations, Goff said. Real chandeliers will hang in front of the backdrop creating a three-dimensional set that includes a new Christmas tree, which grows through the ballet. “The Nutcracker” is the story of a girl who dreams of the Nutcracker Prince after falling asleep with her nutcracker Christmas gift in her arms. The two become entangled in a battle with the Mouse King and then go to the Land of Sweets where they meet the Sugar Plum Fairy. I t ’s t h e r e t h e y m e e t Mother Ginger who brings along a flock of little Bon Bons underneath her wide gingerbread house of a skirt. This year’s Mother Ginger will be played by Anacortes Police Chief Bonnie Bowers, Goff said. “In fact, we all had a little chuckle in rehearsal about ‘Bonnie’s Bon Bons,’” she said. The rest of the cast includes 65 student dancers, ages 6 to 17. Heather Hansen por trays Clara, Julianna Seligman dances as the Sugar Plum Fairy,

Brenna Ware is the Snow Queen, Rich Sohn is Heirr Drosselmeier and his wife Bev Sohn is Grandmother Stahlbaum. “Last year, husband and wife Tim Brown and a very pregnant Rebecca Launius were our Mr. and Mrs. Stahlbaum,” Goff said. “They will be returning to reprise their roles and we’re hoping their infant son, Simon Brown, may make a cameo appearance.” The Winter Celebration on Dec. 3 presents dancers from other Fidalgo DanceWorks classes, such as jazz, tap, modern and hip hop. The program also includes soloists from “The Nutcracker Ballet.” It is a great program to introduce younger children to dance, Goff said. It’s shorter and more informal.
