The event is scheduled at 1 pm on Saturday, March 17 in the Pavilion at the Skagit County Fairgrounds. In past years, this has been a big hit with local residents and do-it-yourselfers.

April 2000, Graham was an Editor at Large for “Cooking Light,” the world’s most widely circulated Epicurean magazine with a readership of 5.7 million. He has received many awards, including the Julia Child Cookbook Award, the James Beard Award, two Emmy nominations for most outstanding daytime programming and induction into the American Culinary Hall of Fame. Today Graham resides in Mount Vernon, Washington, and is working on his goals of increasing people’s daily serving of healthy fruits and vegetables, and reducing

portion sizes and making school lunches more delicious and nutritious.

For this special appearance, he will be speaking on his new vision, E.G.G.S. Graham Kerr taught America how to cook with his landmark 1969 – 1971 cooking show, “The Galloping Gourmet.” Now he has a new vision for what America eats, and how they get their food – E.G.G.S. Learn about becoming a part of the E.G.G.S movement that will be launched during the seminar.

E.G.G.S. stands for “eat, grow, gather and share”. Kerr proposes that we find a total

of 12 neighbors with whom we become an Eggs Carton Club (12 eggs!). Members resolve to commit to over a 100% increase in their personal use of edible plant foods by 2020 by eating more, growing more, gathering together (as friends) more and sharing more with those ‘left out’ in these troubled times. Kerr will discuss why this needs to happen, “...for the common good for and by We the People”, and provides a web source for encouragement and guidance to begin the journey as a Saint Augustine grassroots movement.”

Ted’s experience in the field of energy efficiency in home design goes back more than 35 years. While others were questioning the need for any insulation in homes, Ted was asking, “How much is enough?”

He also helped found Built Green® Washington, where he currently serves as President.

t’s too easy these days to live almost exclusively in a climate-controlled, electronic world. Your days are spent going from air-conditioned house to car to workplace, with your ear glued to a cell phone or your fingers typing away on your personal digital assistant in between. But as people try to re-connect with nature, a new trend in home design— bringing the indoors outside—is emerging.

Many new and remodeled homes are blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor spaces. If you’re thinking about building or remodeling to enhance the outdoor spaces at your home, here are a few of the latest outdoor living trends: Fire elements. These can take the form of fireplaces or fire pits, or be as simple as a freestanding clay chiminea.

other considerations such as smell or the crackling sound commonly associated with wood fires. Fire pits can be portable or built-in, and are often made with materials such as copper, iron or stone. Some feature colored, decorative glass pieces laid out in designs that reflect the flames.

Beds. Forget about hammocks or folding lawn chairs! Today, it’s all about ultimate comfort.

Outdoor beds have been seen on the pool decks of chic hotels in hip cities like Miami and Los Angeles for years. Designed for lounging or even napping, they come in a variety of sizes, generally have a futon-style mattress, and some have adjustable backrests. They are covered in weatherproof fabric, and matching your color scheme is easy with coordinating throw pillows.

Showers. Formerly seen just at beach houses and used strictly for removing sand, outdoor showers are now found in multi-million dollar penthouses, apartment rooftops and suburban neighborhoods for everyday use. They incorporate natural

elements such as stone, bamboo and plants, and are strategically designed to provide privacy, yet allow the user to enjoy the view and the feeling of showering in nature.

Having inviting outdoor living spaces in your home will help when it’s time to sell, too. In the National Association of Home Builders’ Consumer Preferences Surveys that have been conducted over the years, more than three-quarters of respondents said having a patio, front porch or deck on their home was “desirable” or “essential.” And, most wanted an outdoor fireplace or fire pit.

Camano Island Builders Association Performs Christmas Miracle

SICBA Gives Back to the Community!

A “Christmas House” in Stanwood is getting a new lease on life thanks in part to the Camano Island Builders Association (CIBA), a chapter of the Skagit/Island Counties Builders Association. With his leadership, CIBA President Jim Hall lead a team of hundreds of volunteers who donated time, materials, and labor to help complete the three month project.

For 12 years, A Christmas House has provided hundreds of low income families to a free holiday shopping spree at the Camano Christmas House, which runs for a week each year, but never in the same location.

Families in need can come in and pick up free toys, clothes, pajamas, underwear and shoes.

This year Tracy Ulrich, the “Christmas House Lady,” asked her church if it would donate an old dilapidated teardown on its property to make way for a permanent Christmas House. The church agreed, if they didn’t have to pay anything to fix it, and now Ulrich leases the building for $1 a year.

There was one problem: the house was a mess, and without money it would have taken a Christmas miracle to get the home repaired and ready for the Christmas rush.

The miracle happened when the Camano Island Builders Association stepped up and decided to tackle the $75,000 job for free.

Builders and volunteers lent their expertise, time and talent. They installed new windows, siding, doors, decking, insulation, plumbing and extensive electrical work. In addition, toys were donated for the hundreds of families who stop by each year for a little Christmas cheer.

The building industry and local community opened their hearts, and on December 12, the Christmas House opened its permanent doors.

• For 2011, five scholarships were awarded to local high school students for a total $5,000!

• Since 1997, $95,705 has been given by SICBA Members to purchase chicken for the Skagit & Island Counties Food Banks from our Chicken Challenge.

• We support Skagit & Island Counties Habitat for Humanity!

• In 2009, SICBA Members took on the Raines Project by building a ground floor medical accessible bedroom for 4 year old Landon Raines. He has a rare Genetic Disease called Pompe Disease.

• The Camano Island Chapter of SICBA spearheaded the complete refurbishing of the Stanwood/Camano Food Bank Christmas House.

• At the 2010 & 2011 Home & Garden Shows, each year six SICBA member builder teams built six playhouses which were donated to six local charities! In 2010 the playhouses raised over $17,500 for the charities and in 2011 the playhouses raised over $16,000 for the charities! That is a total of over $33,500 that the 12 playhouses have raised for local charities! SICBA Members are proud to support their communities with the Annual Playhouse Challenge!
