he Butterfly Effect Team focused their talents and community resources to support the Farm to School (F2S) program. Concrete School District partnered with United General District 304 to launch a Farm to School program as a strategy to improve the nutrition of elementary school students and create access to healthy foods.

The Butterfly Effect Team members raised funds, designed, and installed raised garden beds for the Farm to School curriculum. Using these garden beds and donated seeds, students will learn how to plant, grow, and cook fresh produce that can also be used in the cafeteria to increase the nutritional value of the current school menu. The project involved fund raising presentations, meetings with the Concrete Fire Chief, and help from community farm partners and volunteers for construction of the gardens. This sustainable F2S project will serve as a pilot program for other school districts. 14

fter months of dedication and hard work, TEAM LEMONHEADS has successfully completed our project by working with our community partner, Youthnet. Youthnet is a local nonprofit that provides different services to youth and their families. The goal of Project Launch Box is to support the transitional youth who are exiting foster care and are in dire need of living supplies. The Lemonheads solicited donations, raised funds to help with rebuilding a supply room filled with much needed essential material resources that will help youth to overcome various hardships, build a more independent and productive life, and to raise awareness about the wonderful work that Youthnet is already doing in our community.

eam FIT partnered with the Friendship House to develop a mother and child reunion room. The goal of this unique space is to help create a nurturing and comfortable room that provides confidentiality and helps restore dignity for mothers and their children who have visitation opportunities while staying at the Friendship House. This project involved local fundraising, team bonding and a deep appreciation for the mission of the Friendship House. Our Project goal was to repair and update the Friendship House creating a living environment which helps residents to overcome various hardships; to build independent and productive lives, and to raise awareness about Friendship House in the county. These remodeling projects included kitchens, floors, baths, furnishings, and landscaping. The outpouring from the community was overwhelming in time, money and support. The benefits to everyone and the team efforts provided sustainability for the new decade.

O

ur team knew we wanted to make a difference in the lives of others but nothing touched our hearts until Mary mentioned the farm up on Starbird Road and Veterans. At that moment, we all knew there was no looking back. We partnered with Growing Veterans because our entire team has been touched by veterans. We wanted to give them something BIG back. At first, we raised funds to purchase a new commercial greenhouse for the Starbird farm. The greenhouse will provide a space for veterans to heal, build community, and grow delicious food together! Plus, optimize their current operation by eliminating transportation issues back and forth from the Lynden Farm. Our team prides itself on doing a project right the first time. We knew this project was so much more than just a greenhouse. We needed to improve the grounds of the farm for disabled veterans so they too could engage in the richness of the Starbird farm. With the help of our in-kind donors we were able to upgrade the parking areas, roads, pathways, and the interior of the greenhouse at the farm with ADA compliant gravel AND build a solid foundation for the greenhouse, which will make an incredible difference in the lives of veterans for many years. leadershipskagit.org

eam TIGAKS worked with the Children’s Museum of Skagit County to repurpose a retired fire engine that was graciously donated by Burlington FD, into a mobile education program. This opportunity for the Children of Skagit County is one where youth are presented with hands on educational experience. Based in the STEAM disciplines (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math), youth will enjoy an ever changing, community supported curriculum which focuses on “igniting” the mind of the youth. The Fire Engine can travel throughout Skagit County, from schools to festivals to farmers markets and beyond, teaching our children essential and fundamental principles of the STEAM core concepts, with the excitement of a fire engine as the medium. We had multiple partners and sponsors to bring this project to fruition. Team TIGAKS and the Children’s Museum of Skagit County are pleased to present the “Ignite Your Mind” Fire Engine to the families of Skagit County.
