often reclusive lifestyle that follows. It wasn’t often that I found myself in the nearby town of Anacortes, so taking advantage of the surroundings and where I lived predominantly became a major part of my childhood. It was the warm summer months that seemed to spark the local neighborhood from its dull, solitary hibernation and into the temperate waters of nearby Trafton Lake. Owned to the private community, Trafton was one of the largest influences of my early youth. Waking up early, meeting with neighborhood friends, and not getting home until dark became a common theme to the long summer days. Where there was 93 days of warm weather, we were there for every one of them. Lunchtime often became interesting; like nomads we trudged our way through narrow dead end gravel roads that sat adjacent to the lake, stopping only to find the nearest can of soda or peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Our local tribe refuge wasn’t the first to make the voyage to the lake day in and day out. Once lost in the loft of our home, a trunk full of pictures showing my mom’s childhood friends basking in the sun at the shore’s edge, DAY/DATES: Wednesdays beginning June 15 TIME: 6:00 - 9:30 pm LOCATION: Janicki Fields and/or Skagit Playfields FEE: $375.00 per team

fishing, and diving awkwardly off the old, ramshackle ‘middle dock’ made me question the history of this eldest crater lake. Did the native children of Fidalgo Island trek these parts before us Whities arrived? Did they roam the lake in their carved out canoes; wade the shores, and tie cedar ropes onto the jutted limbs? As a child. it seems that this place had endless opportunity of activities: A rope swing, floating dock, pontoon boat, kayaks, paddle boards, even a rock to jump off of; nothing sounded worse than having to grow up and leave this perfect place. But as summers and years passed, the number of days spent at Trafton slowly diminished. Our regard for the lake faded and opportunity for other activities and things to do gradually expanded. Despite this change, the impact left on the Sofio friendship never left us. In my eyes, no bond will hang higher than the one that Trafton Lake left for the children of South Fidalgo.
