I

n my 30 plus years as a wedding coordinator, I have seen so many trends come and go, but this year has to be the most exciting! Technology has certainly brought brides-tobe some of the best ways to plan, execute and follow-up with the most special day of their lives. The ability to have your guests take and share photos in real time has accelerated from Facebook posts to apps and sites such as Snapshot, Wedding Photo Swap, Wedpics and others. Live video feeds are becoming more popular and allow guests from out of town witness your vows as they happen. Drones are gaining momentum from photography

In décor, metallics still play a major role in most weddings. Even country-themed celebrations add a touch of sparkle as an accent. Lighting has a larger role than ever. Café lights, up-lighting and lanterns with dipped light bulbs that get brighter as the room darkens give the reception an elegant look without a huge cash outlay. Potted trees, succulents, ferns, lavender sprigs and decorative leaves are no longer reserved for anchoring f lower arrangements. These days they can become the focal point of the décor. Flowering plants and blooming branches also work well and a budget-friendly elegant idea is to adorn bare branches with f lowers, hanging candles or sparkly jewels. Creative seating arrangements include large rectangle or square tables taking the place of traditional head tables. This allows for f low of conversation with the wedding party, accessibility to the bride and groom and

wedding party spouses or dates to join them. His and hers signature cocktails, creatively named, continue to be an expression of personalities. In the catering arena, caterers are bringing back gueridon service, where servers arrive at the dinner table with a cart filled with all the makings for customizable appetizers and desserts. From Caesar salads, pastas and tartars to gelato, late night snacks, doughnuts and milkand-cookies. Naked cakes, which are unfrosted (or partially frosted) and simply adorned with berries or fresh f lowers, are trending as well. And for something to help remember your special day, consider a wine box. A few weeks before the wedding, take some time to each write a letter to one another, expressing your thoughts about the good qualities that you found in your future partner, the reasons for falling in love with them and your hopes and dreams for the future. In other words, you write a “love letter” to each other and place it in a sealed envelope, with the name of your partner on the outside. Do not read what the other has written. You can also include a special bottle of wine, CDs of your favorite music, favorite pictures of you together, notes from family and wedding party and other mementos making

it your own romantic time capsule. Keep the box in a place of honor as a constant visual reminder of your love and commitment to each other. The box can be a life preserver in years to come. The Wine Box should be opened on your 5th wedding anniversary. There is only one other reason the box should be opened before your anniversary. If there should come a time when you hit a bumpy road in your relationship, before you give up or make any irrational decisions, open the Wine Box. The hope is that there will never be a reason to have to open the box except on your anniversary! Hit a rough spot in your relationship? Sit

Wedding cupcakes made to order hot and spicy to lemon angel food By: Kathy Boyd, Stanwood Camano News

W

hen the big windstorm hit the area in August 2015, David and Cyndy Thompson of Stanwood Cupcakes were worried. An order of cupcakes for a wedding had to be baked, decorated and delivered that day. “Fortunately, we lost power for only about two minutes,” David Thompson said. Soon the baking, decorating and cupcake tier-designing were finished and David set out to deliver them to a home in Stanwood. To his surprise, he was asked to take the freshly baked treats to the bathroom. “It was a big room, with about eight people all getting ready for the wedding,” he said. Apparently, it was also the safest place to store the cupcakes until they were needed. Wedding catering is a big part of the Thompsons’ business from spring through fall. Cyndy Thompson said they bake for about 30 weddings a year, creating cupcake tiers with four to six varieties of cakes and often topped with a six-inch groom’s cake – all in flavors and colors to match the wedding theme. Blueberry streusel and strawberry crème – both with fresh, local berries – are popular summertime flavors, followed by pumpkin spice and orange for fall. Filling a typical wedding or reception order for 10 dozen cupcakes is no small feat for two people. Though the actual baking/ decorating part takes around two hours, David Thompson estimates the prep time takes about six hours. They make the batter and frosting a day or two in advance and refrigerate it. “We’ve gotten it down to a science,” he said of their process.

About two years ago, the Thompsons were commissioned to bake a batch of cupcakes for a housewarming party. “The customer wanted them hot and spicy,” Cyndy Thompson said. So, she and David created chocolate cupcakes filled with jalapenõ jelly and frosted them with a chipotle lime buttercream frosting. “We work to create exactly what they want,” Thompson said of their customers.“If someone wants something special, we can do it.” The Thompsons’ willingness to accommodate nearly any request has resulted in a daily line-up of freshly baked cupcakes — regular or mini size — ranging from the usual chocolate and vanilla to the hot and spicy jalapenõ version, carrot, red velvet, coconut with lemon curd and – the Thompson’s wedding special The Thompsons’ motto to build “a – angel food lemon zest with lemon happy place for people to come and butter cream frosting (using fresh enjoy a cupcake, a cookie or an ice cream treat” quickly built a reputation lemons, of course). “The sky’s the limit for cupcakes,” for quality. The result is an uptick each David Thompson said. year in orders for wedding cupcake Though known primarily for tiers. cupcakes, the Thompsons’ freshly Orders for cupcakes by the dozen baked chocolate chip and peanut and in tiers for weddings and parties butter cookies — and seasonal roll in from as far away as Naval Air gingerbread — disappear quickly Station Whidbey Island and Seattle. from the display case. preservatives and try to avoid artificial colors and flavors” in the baked goods, Cyndy Thompson said. More than a dozen flavors of Oregon Ice Cream are offered yearround in the shop. The brand is a specialty ice cream usually not found in supermarkets, she said. The Thompsons also turn out gluten-free cupcakes made with meringue, sugar and chocolate, and vegan versions made with rice flour but no eggs, dairy or wheat. “Wedding planners sometimes order a dozen of them to have on hand (for guests),”Thompson said. Cyndy Thompson calls herself the designer, creating recipes and decorating styles and themes.Though she worked in business administration for 15 years, the cupcake shop takes her back to her love for baking as a youngster in 4-H. While David Thompson does most of the baking, he was the editor of a video magazine for many years. Prior to catering cupcakes for weddings, he performed three – as a Mormon bishop of his ward with the Church of

Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The Thompsons consider their cupcakes a bargain, compared with traditional baking methods at other cupcake shops.Their prices start at $2.75 each, with discounts kicking in on orders of four dozen or more. “We’ve raised our price only once in five years,” Cyndy Thompson said.

Finding the Perfect Local Wedding Venue C

hoosing the wedding venue is often the first (and biggest) step taken when planning a wedding; the place sets the mood and impacts the cost of your big day. Single site wedding and reception venues are the most popular and economical way to go; If you decide to use separate locations, it is a good idea to pick places that are close in proximity to avoid losing some guests. Keep in mind that you can often save money by having your wedding on a Friday, Sunday, weekday, or in the off-season (October through May). Being flexible with your wedding date can also put you in a position to save money. One of the most important considerations in choosing your venue should be the feeling or theme that you are trying to create for your wedding. Browse online pictures of the buildings and gardens to make sure that the décor will match or complement your wedding theme and colors.

fee. Remember, though, that price isn’t everything; you may fall in love with a venue and decide to adjust other aspects of your wedding to make it fit in your budget. Wedding venues can book up quickly, especially during the Northwest wedding season (June through September). To ensure the best selection, it is a good idea to reserve your site about one year in advance. You will typically be asked to make a deposit and sign a contract before the space is officially reserved. Best wishes on finding the perfect location for your special day!
