About the Cover For this year’s holiday guide cover, we decided to include Anacortes’ iconic Tommy Thompson Parkway over Fidalgo Bay. And to make things even more fun, we asked members of Dogs On Call, the all-volunteer organization of registered therapy animal teams, to create a little Christmas scene for us. Hidden in the wagon of presents is Raul, the only therapy cat of the group, with Titan on the left, Monroe, Tokyo and Ryder. Each posed brilliantly as Briana Alzola shot hundreds of photos while their owners created quite the behind-the-scene show with squeaky toys, raised treats and all-around “stay” and “good boy” prompts. Working on set decoration were Kimberly Jacobson and Joan Pringle. You’ll see these therapy pets and more featured throughout the holiday guide in the Shop Anacortes section. See if you can match them up with their profiles scattered throughout the guide. Behind the scenes are Colette Arvidson, in back, Marie Padovan, left standing, Sarah Morr, Sarah Broderick, and kneeling, Claudia Peters. Alzola is in the foreground with the camera.

Shopping in Anacortes We’ve tried to present a wide variety of Anacortes businesses in this shopping guide to help you find gifts for everyone on your holiday list. From that special used book from Pelican Bay Books to a gift certificate for a mani-pedi at 2Q Nails, we hope you’ll get lots of “wows” and hugs on Christmas morning. Speaking of hugs, we gave quite a few while shooting photos of the businesses this year with therapy pets from Dogs on Call. We featured one or more at each business. Every proprietor was welcoming and enjoyed having them around to pose among their wares. And several gave plenty of hugs themselves. (To the dogs, not the photographers.) Dogs on Call is an all-volunteer organization of registered therapy animal teams that educate people about the benefits of animal-assisted activities and therapies; helps train, test, register and mentor pet owners and their animals for volunteering; and facilitates the placement of teams where their services are wanted including in elder care facilities, schools, hospitals and more.

The MailBox Holidays are about celebrating loved ones, both nearby and far away. Visiting places like The MailBox, the new UPS Store and the United States Post Office help ship those special presents to family members who live both near and far. The MailBox, located at 1004 Commercial Ave., has everything needed to ship anything (including freight), Darla Simpson said. In addition to shipping services, it offers a variety of wrapping paper and bows (to make sure each present looks its very best) and a sampling of gift items. The Melissa and Doug brand items are a big seller, Simpson said. That brand’s items include toys, games and puzzles. There are also greeting cards to help attach the perfect message or just to remind someone they are loved this holiday season. The MailBox offers passport photo services, perfect to use if holiday celebrations are taking place over seas. Titan It also offers printing and copying services. Lena Tran and her mom Cathy have been running it for about two years. Gift certificates offer a nice break for a bit of luxury and pampering, Tran said. “Then the person can relax,” she said. Not everyone has a boat in Anacortes, but just about everyone enjoys being next to the water, said West Marine manager Dan Leach. “They choose to be here because they love the water,” he said. “We want to be their store.” That’s why the business carries not only boating equipment such as fish finders and hand-held radios, paddle boards, kayaks, but also foul-weather clothing, travel supplies and dog gear from to-go water bowls and toys to life jackets. West Marine also has great stocking stuffers — from Yeti-brand tumblers and Stanley shot glass sets to waterproof phone covers and wireless speakers, Leach said. “The people who work at West Marine are your neighbors,” Leach said of the Anacortes-located chain store, where sailors and Anacortes High School students find jobs. West Marine is at 918 Commercial Avenue. Store hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. — Joan Pringle

There are thousands of people this holiday season who know of at least one item they’ll find in their stockings. It’ll be from the people who know them — and their weaknesses — best. It’s that oh-so-special coffee gift card. Strawberry Bay Coffee at 801 21st St. is just one of several choices here in town to get a card for your special caffeine buddy this Christmas. Bags of Strawberry Bay Coffee and Roasting Co. whole bean coffee will make a great gift, as well. Half a pound is $6, and a full pound is $12. The stand roasts its own coffee every day in small batches so customers get the freshest cup possible, said Jacquelyn Michael, daughter of owners Kelly and Trish Bradley. Customer service is another thing the business strives for. “We want to make sure all our employees are happy and all our customers are happy,” Michael said. “I feel that makes us different.” Featured this holiday season are eggnog and pumpkin spiced lattes, and locally made seasonal cookies. On a daily basis, the stand offers fresh baked scones, breakfast sandwiches and burritos, and special treats for their four-legged customers. The coffee stand just north of the roundabout on R Avenue is open 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. — Joan Pringle
CrossFit Anacortes They’re out there — the people who train for marathons for fun and would prefer a good workout to a night in. Around the holidays, tables are piled high with plenty to eat so it may be the time to get a fitnessfriendly loved one a way to burn off those extra calories. Gift certificates to a gym such as CrossFit Anacortes or Thrive Fitness are a great way to give an active person something they can use. CrossFit Anacortes, located at 506 30th St., offers classes and strength programs. Classes are available for all ages. The workouts are scaled to help people of all fitness levels, and staff is available to customize each regimen. The gym opened about four years ago in Anacortes. It offers both monthly memberships and drop-in class punchcards. Package prices vary from $49 to $300, general manager Samantha Peterson said. “We offer a different type of training and coaching system,” she said. “As a gym, we help you in the success of your goals to obtain a better life style with fitness and health.” Free classes are available at 11 a.m. each Saturday to allow people to try out the services offered. Lil’ Tugs Little heads and feet need little hats and boots — and everything in between. If you’re in the market for clothing or accessories for the littlest folks in your life, check out Lil’ Tugs Children’s Boutique, which opened this summer. Owner Michele DeCarlo said people were asking before Halloween when the holiday attire would come in. The business carries new clothing for newborn to children’s size 8, which is through younger elementary school kids. There are coats and pajamas, boots and hats, as well as diaper bags, highchairs and strollers. The store carries Bunnies by the Bay, Emu boots and Native shoes. DeCarlo said she can’t pick a favorite piece — “I think it’s all cute.” The shop will host two classes — Make a Memory keepsakes (Nov. 25) and snowflake class (Nov. 26). Call the store or check out their Facebook page for details. Santa will visit on Saturdays, Dec. 3 and 17. Lil’ Tugs Children’s Boutique, 713 Commercial Ave., is open 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sundays. Learn more at http://liltugskids.com. — Kimberly Jacobson

Skagit Cycle Washington has been ranked highest for bicyclefriendly states by a variety of surveys and studies, and Anacortes is no exception. With its bike-friendly trails and abundance of people traveling on two wheels instead of four, this town is a great place to get around on a self-powered vehicle. Bikes shops in town, such as Skagit Cycle and Bikespot, could mean a very happy gift recipient this holiday season. Skagit Cycle, located at 1620 Commercial Ave., offers bikes for all ages, plus accessories and apparel. The shop makes it easy to get loved ones up on two wheels and to keep them safe — and looking their best — while they do it. Skagit Cycle also offers repairs and service so if someone already has a bike, it can be ready for the road (or trail) in no time. Information: skagitcyclecenter.com or 360-588-8776. Regional brewers are featured two Tuesdays of the month during Brewers Nights. Patrons get a $1 off the featured brews and a chance to win free raffle prizes. Pelican Bay Books
Give the gift of adventure — without having to leave home. The great thing about walking into a used bookstore like Pelican Bay Books — “there’s literally a book for everyone,” said Bookseller Eli Barrett. “You can find stuff that you know nobody else has.” The store carries used and rare books only. They will take requests, especially if you’re looking for a collectible book (there is a small fee). When trying to find a gift for someone, Barrett suggests focusing on what they enjoy. You may find an 1876 book on woodworking bound in leather for the handy person in your life or a signed copy of something special. “If you’re buying it for someone else know what they love and try to match what they love to the subject of the book or the particular author,” Barrett said. “It’s something they can treasure.” Raul Pelican Bay Books, 1104 The seven-yearNinth St, is open 10 a.m. to old Birman cat belongs 5:30 p.m. Monday through to Sarah Morr. Give back during the holidays
Holiday Artwalk
Expanding your giving circle from family and friends to others in the community is made easy with several organizations in town tasked to do exactly that. From food for a festive dinner to toys for the kids on Christmas morning, these groups specialize in the holiday spirit. • Meals on Wheels is collecting Christmas gifts for clients who may not otherwise receive presents during the holidays. To participate, simply pick up a tag from the Giving Tree at the Senior Activity Center, 1701 22nd St., and return it attached to a new unwrapped gift priced from $5 to $20. Indicate if the gift is for a man or woman. Some ideas are flashlights, socks, scarves, hand soap, mittens or gloves, mugs, candles, fleece throws or blankets, 2017 calendars, picture frames, hand lotion, clocks with large numbers, nightlights, hand towels, slippers, hats and gift cards to local grocery stores. The deadline to drop off gifts is Friday, Dec. 9, so they can be delivered the week of Dec. 19. Monetary donations will help staff purchase gifts, as well. • Anacortes DASH partners with the The Market at Anacortes for the eighth annual “Feed our own” drive with a giving tree benefiting the Salvation Army. The tree is at the left entrance to the store. Shoppers can drop off donations of nonperishable food in boxes next to the tree and make monetary contributions to the Salvation Army. • The Salvation Army, 3001 R Ave., Suite 100, provides for the community through its Angel Tree Program and Red Kettle Campaign. The Angel Tree Program has gift tags at businesses throughout town with the names of children, their ages and their Christmas wishes. Find the list of businesses at anacortes.salvationarmy.org or call 360-293-6682. The deadline to drop off toys is Monday, Dec. 12, at The Salvation Army. Bell ringers with the Red Kettle Campaign will be out earlier this year, starting Monday, Nov. 14, at Safeway, The Market and Walgreens. • Through the Simple Gesture program, red reusable bags are distributed throughout the community in an effort to keep food bank shelves stocked. People fill up the bags with the food and hygiene items. Volunteers pick them up every two months. The next pickup date is Dec. 10. A special request before Christmas is for wrapping paper and tape. To participate in the group’s turkey/ham drive, pick up a Safeway gift cards. Information: email asimplegestureanacortes@gmail.com.
The Chamber of Commerce will host its annual Holiday Artwalk 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, Dec. 2, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3. Friday’s artwalk is meant to coincide with the annual Christmas tree lighting. More than 20 merchants in the downtown area will exhibit the work of local artists, including paintings, sculptures, jewelry, photography and music. Many businesses will also offer holiday specials. The event Friday will coincide with the December First Friday Gallery Walk. All regular gallery walk participants are part of the holiday artwalk, as well.

DanceWorks hosts holiday shows
Two shows this winter from Fidalgo DanceWorks will serve up a little something for everyone. The first is the holiday classic “The Nutcracker.” Performances KP Studios are at 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, and 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 11. Tickets from $10 to $15 are available on brownpapertickets.com. The second show is the dance school’s annual Winter Celebration, which features all its contemporary dance styles. That performance is 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 17, and seats fill quickly, DanceWorks Executive Director Julie Wenzel said. Fidalgo DanceWorks is a performing arts school, Wenzel said. Without the performance element, the kids (and adults) aren’t getting everything they can out of their dance KP Studios education. Having people in the audience helps enrich their experience and can truly help them fall in love with performing and the art of dance. The ballet follows the story of young Clara, who is given a nutcracker as a Christmas gift from her godfather. Her brother breaks the toy, and she returns in the night to check on it. Suddenly, mice fill the room and everything magically grows to be life-size, including the nutcracker. Clara is caught in the middle of a battle and helps the nutcracker defeat the Mouse King. She and the nutcracker travel to the Land of Sweets, ruled by the Sugar Plum Fairy, and watch a night of celebratory dances. This year, there are new costumes and new choreography for several numbers, so there’s something new for everyone, Wenzel said. Dancers have rehearsed for months for this holiday classic, and it’s not to be missed, Wenzel said. For the winter celebration, each choreographer and teacher has featured a different interpretation of winter. The show should be a lot of fun and offers a little for everyone with all the styles of dance. This year, for the first time, the school will feature a dance from its African dance class. The class has students between sixth and 12th grades and has been a great addition to the DanceWorks line-up, Wenzel said. Other styles featured in the show are musical theater, modern, hip hop, tap and jazz. Information: www.fidalgodanceworks.org. — Briana Alzola

ACT presents ‘The Best Christmas Pageant Ever’ Chaos and hilarity ensue in the upcoming holiday production of “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” at Anacortes Community Theatre. The Herdman kids are potentially the most awful kids in town, so when it comes time to put on the annual church Christmas pageant, church leaders face the struggle of putting all the Herdmans into the production. The Herdmans steal, lie, smoke and hit other kids and decide one day to go to church after hearing there would be free snacks. Now they’ll be singing Christmas carols with the rest of the congregation. With the Herdmans involved, the Christmas story is told in a unconventional way. The play, written by Barbara Robinson and directed by Cally Holden, will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays Nov. 25 to Dec. 17. Tickets are $18 each and can be purchased by calling the theater box office at 360-293-6829. ACT is located at 10th Street and M Avenue. The show’s narrator is Beth Bradley (played by Macy Yanega). Her younger brother Charlie is played by Cassius Tossavainer, and the Herdmans are played by Ben Marshall, Emma Paul, Kody Hargett, Emma DeBoer, Maya Marshall and Siobh’an Gross. The play is based on a book by the same name also written by Robinson. It was first performed in 1982 by Seattle Children’s Theatre and is performed each year throughout the country. It was made into a television movie in 1983 and has two sequels: “The Best Halloween Ever!” and “The Best School Year Ever.” — Briana Alzola
Tokyo The nearly 12-yearsyoung Labrador retriever belongs to Colette Arvidson. Tokyo enjoys walks anywhere he can get them and his favorite treat is the next one. He was bred and trained at Guide Dogs for the Blind in Oregon and worked more than six years as a guide to Colette’s husband, Andy. In 2013, he began his new career as therapy pet, visiting elder care facilities, schools and hospitals.
Celebrate the Season Celebrate the Season, a series of family-oriented holiday events, opens the first weekend of December. The experience is open to the public noon to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 3 and 4, at the Port of Anacortes Transit Shed Event Center. “We decorate the event center in a winter wonderland theme as a gift to the community to explore and enjoy. Among the features is a marketplace for unique gifts by local crafters and nonprofit organizations – many benefiting student groups. In addition, there are activities for kids, teams, adults and families,” said Art Shotwell, Anacortes Schools Foundation president. “On Saturday, we hope that people will come down after the parade and enjoy this holiday experience and the entertainment we have lined up.” Funds generated by this event go toward programs supported by Anacortes Schools Foundation, including STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) enrichment programs. During Celebrate the Season’s two public days, guests can enjoy everything from photos with Santa and craft projects to hot chocolate and cookies, with a holiday shopping marketplace. Admission is $5 per person or $20 per family per day. Saturday, Dec. 3, will feature afternoon entertainment that includes the An-O-Chords, Fidalgo DanceWorks groups and caroling. Gingerbread houses are the focus on Sunday, Dec. 4. Student and adult teams will test their creativity as they compete in designing and decorating houses for prizes and bragging rights. Gingerbread entries will be judged by a panel of community leaders. In addition, younger children will be able to decorate a mini-house of their own to take home. The signature event is the Dream It dinner and auction on Friday, Dec. 2, at the port’s event center. It features dinner catered by Gere-a-Deli and a live auction followed by entertainment. Doors open for registration at 6:30 p.m. Tickets, $50 per person, are available at CelebrateTheSeason.brownpapertickets.com or Johnny Picasso’s. Dakota Creek Industries is the presenting sponsor for the Celebrate the Season event. Other local sponsors include the Port of Anacortes, Trident Seafoods, Kiwanis Sunrisers, Conrardy Design Group, Synergy Sports Technology, T-Shirts by Design, SRV Construction, Chandler Square and The Market at Anacortes. Anacortes Schools Foundation is a nonprofit charitable organization established in 1984. It benefits students at all levels with college and vocational scholarships, early learning support and STEM enrichment. All proceeds from the Celebrate the Season event will support foundation programs.
