Welcome from the Sedro-Woolley Chamber of Commerce W

elcome to Sedro-Woolley, where happiness and a healthy environment are the primary reason people love to call it home. The area is full of so many gorgeous places that both locals and tourists alike love to visit all of the attractions. The town is steeped in hometown charm, a vital center of recreation, and a great place to do business; we invite you to stay and explore what makes us unique—besides the name. Downtown Sedro-Woolley offers artwork carved as tribute to its logging past as each year new chainsaw carvings are added to the streetscape. The city is working on a revitalization of its downtown with many buildings receiving facelifts as growth is anticipated. When local owners invest in buildings, one can truly see the pride that goes into creating a distinct impression. Significant growth in jobs and the economy are also expected, thanks to the Janicki BioEnergy project known as the Omniprocessor, funded for development by the Bill Gates Foundation. Peter Janicki designed, and has started production on, a machine that will change the world by processing human waste into clean energy and clean water, exceeding the goals set by the Gates Foundation. (See janickibioenergy.com) Hammer Heritage Square, near the center of town, is the place to be for many events such as Blast from the Past; and the

home of Sedro-Woolley Farmer’s Market, open on Wednesdays from May to October. The events in town are generally family-oriented, from Woodfest during the Tulip Festival which focuses on student woodworking projects, the Easter Egg Hunt, Kids’ Fishing Derby in May and Blast from the Past in June with its classic hula-hoop, jump-rope and eating competitions. For the first time we are adding a Color Fun Run/Walk to Blast from the Past. Don’t forget the Loggerodeo with its carnival and grand parade in July, Halloween parade and merchant trickor-treating in October and wonderful Christmas events in December. If you want your family to experience something genuine, Sedro-Woolley offers plenty for visitors and residents alike. For motor enthusiasts, there are two car shows every year: one in June during Blast and one in September on Founders’ Day Weekend. Hitting Highway 20 or Highway 9 in any rig reminds you to enjoy the drive as you pass through the forests, mountains and small villages away from the hustle and bustle of the interstate. The town has several local parks and is surrounded by outdoor recreational opportunities from the North Cascades to the San Juan Islands, all just a short drive from the heart of Sedro-Woolley. At Riverfront Park on the Skagit River, one can find plenty of picnic areas and

restrooms, city maintained shelters that can be rented for reunions or other events, a dog park, boat launch and RV park. The Rotary club built an amphitheater a few years ago, and has been holding free summer concerts in the park. You can also enjoy concerts at our lovely local winery, Eagle Haven on Sims Road, east of town during the summer months. In 2012, the Rotary Club also built a new state-of-the-art skate park that now attracts skateboarders from all over the region and an annual competition in the fall. Come and see what Sedro-Woolley has to offer!

ourists come to see the beautiful wood carvings and murals spread throughout the downtown area of the city, mostly along Metcalf Street. The carvings come from the annual chainsaw carving competition - part of the Loggerodeo festivities. Education, Employment & Business Sedro-Woolley School District

T

he Sedro-Woolley School District is ranked first in the county with a high school graduation rate averaging 90 percent over the last several years. Sixth grade reading and math achievement levels continue to exceed statewide assessment trends. Middle school students have improved their reading, math and science scores and high school students continue to meet and exceed state standards. The district has once again shown itself as an education leader with Big Lake, Clear Lake and Lyman Elementary Schools being honored as recipients of the Washington Achievement Award in 2016. Clear Lake was also honored as a “School of Distinction” for the second year in a row. Still, there is always work to be done. Under the leadership of Superintendant Phil Brockman, the Sedro-Woolley school district took several steps to honor their mission that every student graduates with

the knowledge and skills for future learning and success in the 2016/2017 school year. Because of the STEM Network’s success, it is expanding to all of the Skagit County School Districts and has been awarded a

$200,000 grant from Washington STEM. Sedro-Woolley used the $30,000 STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Network grant awarded in December, 2015 to establish the Sedroskagitvisitor.com

Woolley STEM Network. The local network partnered with Washington STEM to grow systems where educators, employers and community leaders work together to match science, technology, engineering and math education to career opportunities in Sedro-Woolley. Evergreen Elementary became the first district STEM Lab School at the beginning of the 2016/2017 school year. While the district has a strong focus on STEM, there is also support for reading, writing, social studies, the arts, physical education and co-curricular clubs and activities. Last year Samish and Central Elementary students participated in an Art Docent Program with a differently themed art project and lesson each month. The success of the program supported a decision to add 25 minutes to the elementary school day and formally bring art, music and library instructional media specialists back to all of the elementary schools last fall. Sedro-Woolley High School transitioned to an 8 period alternating day schedule

and added additional “college in the high school” courses for pre-engineering and broadcasting. The Sedro-Woolley School District expanded the Highly Capable Program for students with advanced abilities in the 2016/2017 school year. Stated Superintendent Phil Brockman, “… we are excited and pleased with the services developed for our students as we continue to expand the program.” All of these initiatives and student achievements wouldn’t be possible without great educators and administrators. The district employs a highly qualified and dedicated staff with over 70 percent of teachers holding masters degrees and many holding national board certifications. Coming from the Seattle School District, Phil Brockman has served as the SedroWoolley school superintendent since summer 2013. The Sedro-Woolley School District welcomed Mischelle Darragh as the new principal at Samish Elementary School in fall 2016. She came from the Arlington School District where she served as assistant principal for students at Post

Middle School. Funding is a critical part of academic and student success and the Sedro-Woolley Alumni and Schools Foundation is a valued school district partner. The foundation has held an annual fundraiser called “Robyn’s Pancakes for Kids” on July Fourth. It has donated $400,000 directly into classrooms as well as funding for hundreds of thousands of dollars of student scholarships over the years. The district has two levies that passed in February 2014. The Safety and Technology levy is a four-year levy that generates $900,000 per year; the money collected goes to ensure safe learning facilities, update 10-year-old computer labs, build mobile labs and a variety of technical smart devices to enhance learning in classrooms. In 2016, security investments took a sizable portion of the levy; safety tools were added including a “buzz-in” feature at the elementary schools. With a considerable safety investment handled, technology in the classroom has regained focus with the district getting closer to the goal of having

At the middle school, Microsoft Academy was implemented for seventh and eighth grade students; an expansion of the program at the high school level. The Educational Programs & Operations (EPO) levy funds 25 percent of the total school budget and has been in place for 40 years. Traditionally it has supported full-day kindergarten for three schools that don’t qualify for state funding; class size reduction; additional support for students with disabilities; support for students learning English as a second language; general transportation for students within the school district; building maintenance and various athletics, clubs and school activities.

Located off of Rhodes Road on a nearly 10-acre site, Winnie Houser Park is home to Sedro-Woolley Youth Soccer. Formally opened on October 13, 2012, the Sedro-Woolley Skate Park attracts skaters from all over the region. It is located next to Tesarik Field and the basketball court between Metcalf and Munro Streets. Local youth participated in the planning phase of the project before construction began in July 2012. The park was built as a safe recreation space for youth with the support of the SedroWoolley Rotary Club and then president and retired Police Chief, Doug Wood. The Rotary Club raised $200,000 in funding and members donated their time, labor, equipment and supplies to get the park built on schedule and within budget. Other large contributors were the McIntyre Foundation and the City of Sedro-Woolley but there were many other businesses, foundations and individuals who made donations. There is an annual Skate Park Competition, held the second Saturday in September – September 9, 2017. The Regional competition is at the SedroWoolley Skate Park after preliminary competitions are held at neighboring city parks. Local high-school students compete and a professional skating team comes to exhibit and judge tricks and form. Parents can seek what is happening at the skate park live anytime at www.swskatepark.com.

Fishing

W

hether you prefer to fish the ocean, rivers or lakes; Skagit County has it all. Numerous alpine lakes dot the landscape of the North Cascades. On the ocean, saltwater species include lingcod, halibut and salmon. All five species of salmon – Chinook, Coho, Sockeye, Chum and Pink – can be caught in local rivers and bays. Trout species such as steelhead, rainbow, cutthroat, brown and brook can be fished in numerous lakes and

rivers, while warm water species, including large and small-mouth bass, perch, crappie and bluegill are also available. Check state regulations on fishing seasons and public access before casting your rod. Most sporting goods stores carry the free booklet with detailed regulations called “Fishing in Washington” – be sure to pick up a current copy. The booklet also contains handy tips on gear, tactics and where fish are biting. Note that anglers aged 15 and over need a Washington State fishing license, also available at many sporting goods stores. Visit the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife website at www.wdfw.wa.gov to check for emergency closures and other information. See Chamber Events for details about the Kids’ Fishing Derby on Northern State Pond, held annually in May. Riverfront Park, located on the south side of town at 1001 River Road, features a river boat launch and public restrooms.

Sedro-Woolley Museum

C

elebrating its 25th anniversary in summer 2017, the Sedro-Woolley museum is a cherished resource for international visitors and Sedro-Woolley residents alike. The organization enjoys broad local support; most items on display were donated by members of the community and the museum is operated by an all-volunteer staff. In October 2016, Patty Boettcher took over as president while long-time museum President Carolyn Freeman assumed the roles of executive director and treasurer. Patty was a loyal skagitvisitor.com

museum volunteer for more than ten years before joining the board in 2013 which led to her transition to president. The Sedro-Woolley Museum celebrates the city’s frontier history, boasting several set exhibits including a re-creation of a frontier town with a barn and a main street with post office, jail, newspaper office and dental office. There are displays with old machines and equipment, logging exhibits, a tribute to community military members and pictures of the infamous bank robbery of 1914. Volunteers are working on a new

exhibit about Skagit steel and iron workers. The museum continues its process of converting the library into a research library; all books and newspapers will be catalogued so that information about Sedro-Woolley’s history can be accessed more easily. The gift shop sells books from local authors, local artwork on consignment, plus dolls, toys and books donated by community members. There are good deals to be found such as quilting books for $10. The museum’s annual membership drive is in January but people are welcome to join in person or online throughout the year. There is also a model railroad setup all year that runs fully on special occasions. The annual model railroad open house in February attracts local railroad enthusiasts.

Chainsaw Carving Competition

T

he tradition continues in the “chainsaw carving capital of Washington!” Started in 1996 by Rocky McArthur, the Chainsaw Carving Competition has evolved into the premier carving event of the Northwest. The 2017 Loggerodeo has once again assembled some of the finest carvers for the Chainsaw Carving Championships. Held in downtown Sedro-Woolley at the corner of Murdock and State streets during the Loggerodeo, this event has proven to be a stand-out crowd pleaser year after year. Fourteen awardwinning carvers from around the world will go head to head to be crowned the “best of the best.” Working with beautiful six to eight foot cedar logs, the competitors will square off at 8 a.m. on Saturday, July 1, with quick carves and auctions running daily through Tuesday, July 4. Folks will have a chance to see carvings made from start to finished product and then bid on their favorites at the auctions. A portion of the auction proceeds goes to fund and support the Loggerodeo that sponsors this fun, exciting event. The quick carves will be held July 1-3 from 1:30 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. with daily auctions at 5 p.m. Tuesday’s quick carve is scheduled from 1:30 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. Log competition carving hours are July 1-3 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on July 4. On July 4, don’t miss the log competition judging at 1:30 p.m., the auction at 3
