The Mountain Flowers

The Mountain Flowers are an original rock and roll group from Seattle, WA influenced by the distinctive music of the 1950s and 1960s. 4-H & FFA at the Fair

The Skagit County Fair has a long and proud history of partnering with local 4-H and FFA club members who come to share and showcase their skills and talents. Many kids participate in both programs; the FFA in school and the 4-H all year long. The clubs share common themes: hands on learning, community spirit, sciences, arts, and agriculture. Don’t miss the Skagit Junior Livestock Show in the pavilion on Friday, August 11th, at 7:00 p.m.; market animals raised by FFA students and 4-H club members will be for sale by auction. Stop by the Events office before the auction and get a Bidder number. Participants must be in grades three to twelve and from Skagit or Snohomish counties. The kids show the market animal that they raised through their project. The projects are local, well cared for and managed by the students. Students are taught to treat and care for their animals with a high ethical standard of care. The livestock sold includes steers, lambs, hogs, meat goats and meat poultry and rabbits. Students are judged on Showmanship also known as Fitting and Showing, which is a 4-H requirement for any animal project. The exhibitor is judged on how well he or she exhibits the animal to its best advantage, with additional scoring for the grooming and presentation of both animal and handler. Type classes represent a breed or “type” of animal in a particular project. A Round Robin is a crowd favorite where a showman from each division shows large and small animals from other divisions. Speed Events in the horse arena include Poles, Key, International Flags, Figure 8 and Barrels. Equitation classes are judged on the rider’s position and ability to ride correctly with effective communication aids.

The National FFA’s (originally the Future Farmers of America) motto is “learning to do, doing to learn, earning to live, living to serve.” The organization was founded in 1928 by 33 farm boys for the purpose of bringing together students, teachers, and agribusiness interests through agricultural education and handson projects. FFA now has almost 500,000 members in 7,000 chapters nationwide with millions of alumni. The organization teaches classes in more than 300 careers in the food, fiber and natural resources industry including animal science, horticulture, floral design, AG mechanics, and meal art. Apart from personal growth, these programs provide students the opportunity to travel, discover careers in agriculture, and develop premier leadership skills. AT THE CO-OP FFA Global Programs give students and teachers the opportunity to explore the different agricultural practices and cultures in countries around the world. Students can join FFA through a school club while they are enrolled in an agricultural class.

4-H & FFA at the Fair

4-H Youth Program

The 4-H youth program is volunteerdriven and community-based, it was started at the beginning of the 20th century to ensure the future of rural youth. It consists of a community of more than six million members from ages nine through 19 and 60 million alumni from across America. The clubs emphasize learning, leadership/life skills, healthy living, citizenship and science through classes, hands-on projects, and community service. Students can choose from a variety of projects in the areas of technology, human sciences, large and small animals, science and engineering, natural resources, and citizenship and leadership. Beyond the excitement of learning something new through a project, youth have the opportunity to participate in leadership conferences, travel the world, become involved in their community through service, develop healthy youth/adult partnerships and meet new friends in a safe and comfortable setting. In Skagit County, 400 youth are organized into 26 clubs and mentored by 90 adult volunteer leaders.

Says Dorothy Elsner WSU Extension Skagit County 4-H Program Coordinator: “4-H thrives in Skagit County due to incredible support from the Skagit County community. The generosity of our community enables Skagit County 4-H to continue our mission in raising responsible, thoughtful and generous leaders for our future.” Dorothy participated in 4-H Clubs in her youth and says that, “…it was truly what motivated me to go to college and start a life of 4-H activity. My daughters were Skagit County 4-H members as well and my husband and I volunteered for many years.” This year Skagit County 4-H is fundraising to support a 4-H program in Burundi Africa, one of the poorest countries in the world. WSU 4-H has been partnered in Burundi to teach gardening skills, Skagit County 4-H raised $500 last year and is aiming for that again this year. The 4-H pledge encourages 4-H youth to be part of a club, community, country and world.

4-H Exhibits and Contests The 4-H building (Building A) is full of interesting still-life exhibits and 4-H in Action demonstrations. This year Building C will house the dog project and show ring, dog projects show in obedience and agility through an obstacle course; handlers work with dogs both on and off leash. The Pavilion barn is the home of livestock projects; Dairy, Beef and Swine along with an exhibition of Shooting Sports. Goats and Sheep are housed and shown across the fairgrounds in Building F. Building E is the Small Animals Barn which has had a makeover this year, this barn fills up with Rabbit, Cavy, Cat and Poultry projects. The Horse barns and the Horse arena is busy all day with many different horse performances.

Children join 4-H by choosing a 4-H club; visiting with leaders and members at the fair is a great way to find a good fit for an individual’s interests. 4-H members can compete with their projects in contests at the local, state, regional, or national levels and also attend conferences and events. 4-H has four Essential Elements: Belonging, Generosity, Mastery and Independence. These topics give youth a safe place to “Learn as they Do,” generate positive youth/adult partnerships, and feel a part of a bigger community. The 4-H motto is “Making the Best Better.” You will see these values reflected in the children when you take time to visit and talk with 4-H members at the fair.

Floricica Romanian Dance Ensemble Floricica Romanian Dance Ensemble

www.facebook.com/ asociatia.zestreacarpatilor Show time: Main Stage, Friday, August 11, 4:15 p.m. The Floricica (Little Flower) Romanian Dance Ensemble of the “Zestrea Carpatilor” Cultural-Educational Association and the “Martha Bibescu” Children’s Club from Comarnic, Romania, is returning to the 2017 fair lineup in partnership with the Anacortes Sister Cities Association (ASCA). This time around, the ensemble will be accompanied by the Baradache Band; a family band from Comarnic with vocalist Irina Mierlita. Irina will sing with talented young vocalist Silvia Bordeianu of Bacau, Moldova. As one of the last of its kind, the dance ensemble was founded in 2004 to promote Romanian folklore, heritage and customs through traditional folkdances and costumes. Their motto is “Educate through Culture.” Over the years the group has grown and now has about 80 children and teenagers attending the folkdance classes. The ensemble will perform dances from Oltenia (the famous Calus dance), the Muntenia area of Transylvania (dances from Oas and Ardeal), Moldova region and other minority dances like Basarabia Gipsy dance or gipsy dances of Romania. The accomplished group has travelled all over Europe to compete in international competitions and shows. The ensemble’s lively and intricate dances were choreographed by Cristian Colezea, master Constantin Andrei, Anamaria Dulam Lovric, dance instructors Adriana Balanica, Olteanu Marian and Andra Balanica. Born and raised in Comarnic, Romania, Anamaria came to the U.S. for the first time in August 2011 with the Floricica Dance Ensemble. Here she met Croation master dancer John Lovric of Anacortes, who assisted the group as a stage-hand. They fell in love and were married in 2015 in Romania with 17 American guests and a large number of Romanians in attendance. The couple welcomed a baby girl in August 2016 and has made their home in Anacortes. Said Anamaria: “Now I get to see my students and friends perform in the U.S. as I am now on the other side of the story, the American side. This will be the second time the group performs at the Skagit County Fair; it is a very unique experience for them to enjoy and participate on stage.” The Anacortes Sister Cities Association is proud to be covering about 70 percent of the expenses of the group travelling here. Donations are being accepted to help the ASCA create more spectacular events, help fund scholarships and more.

Miller Campbell

Campbell’s first solo tour was November 2016 and covered the Pacific Northwest. She is entering her second year touring with the Skagit County Fair and Montana’s rodeo circuit in August and a West Coast tour from Seattle to San Diego this November. Said Campbell: “I am so excited, so incredibly blessed at the response to my music…getting to perform as a solo artist – and even being interviewed is mind boggling.”

Named one of the “Next Women of Country Music,” Miller is quickly rising through the Seattle Country ranks with her soulful, energetic music. Inspired by Little Big Town, Stevie Nicks, Pistol Annies and Jefferson Airplane, Campbell’s first extended play record (EP) was released in mid-July with Seattle’s London Bridge Studio. Said Miller: “The album was a long time coming. I have been travelling back and forth between Seattle and Nashville every other month but wanted to keep my record local.” In a sign of her growing career, Miller signed with Seattle PR Company Tiny Human on Monday, June 12.

Growing up in Skagit County, Miller went to the fair every year growing up. She remembers watching all the performers and never dreamed that she would end up being one of them. Campbell performed a couple of years ago at the Skagit County Fair with Northwest country cover band Twisted Dixie but 2017 marks her first time on the fair stage as a solo artist. Miller is excited to introduce her original songs with her signature gritty sound.

Campbell got her start at the age of six in musical theater and an active modeling career introduced her to the musicians that would form her first rock band in Seattle. Hailing from Miller Campbell the Glen Campbell lineage, Miller returned to her family roots when she found her true place writing and singing traditional blues-based country music.

Campbell is touring with musicians Caleb Morgan on bass, Josh Kossack on drums and Morgan Wick on lead guitar.

The Skagit County Fair is thrilled to welcome the X-Treme AirDogs™ (XAD) Fair Series Tour for their first time at the fair! This is a high-energy entertainment headliner like no other! Said Fair Operations Manager Aric Gaither: “We look forward to this “big splash” at our fair!” See all phases of the DogTown show throughout the day: three water jumping competitions, two ground games, training and demo sessions, interacting with and educating the crowd. The crew welcomes questions and pictures with the dogs after the shows. Expect standing room only crowds and tons of fun! Teams made up of a dog and handler compete against each other to win. The water competition portion of the show includes X-Treme Air dock jumping, X-Treme Vertical high-jumping and X-Treme Retrieve. Spectators can expect to see some of the best pro dogs in the world, called “Dock Stars,” jump “monster air” off the 40-foot stage dock into a 41-foot by 21-foot, 32,000 gallon splash pool (expect to get splashed if you stand by the pool). The X-Treme AirDogs X-Treme Air (long jump for dogs) world record is held by a Lab at 29 feet 1 inch while the small dog league record (a yorky) is 6 feet 5 inches. The X-Treme air 18

competition circuit but there are always new dogs at each location which means a fresh competition at every show. Over the course of a season over 600 different dogs compete; mostly Labs but all breeds are welcome. You never know who will win!

We treat our fans like our family.” Mike’s experiences producing two NASCAR races, his time as a trainer and agent for world champion lumberjack, Mel Lentz, competing in motocross and as an Oregon State Baseball-Football alum helped him to create this high-energy amped K-9 sport. One of Mike and his wife Kris’ 4-legged kids was a little black Lab named Tula; she was the elite K-9 athlete who put the word “AMP” into the sport through her amped up energy. Tragically, she was lost to a kidney disease at just five years old. The family turned their devastating loss into the drive and passion behind the business. The whole family travels for the show and the couple’s adult children work alongside Mike to bring his vision to life. In all, there are four labs and eight to 10 crew members that are either family or like family.This will be the third to last stop of their 2017 tour, which runs the West Coast between Oregon, Washington and British Columbia. The World Championships will be held on Labor Day weekend, August 26 through September 4 at the Oregon State Fair in Salem, Oregon, where a series points champion and a world champion will be crowned.

After graduating from AHS in 2016, Elliott is coming home from his first year studying Materials Engineering at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, California. While studying in California, Elliott continued to perform for audiences as large as 1,100 where he mastered a revamped show sure to entertain and delight the entire family. In March, he traveled to Hollywood and auditioned at the famous Hollywood Magic Castle. He recently received notification of his acceptance to the Academy of Magical Arts and their desire for him to perform weekends this fall.

Elliott has been performing for large and small crowds since he was a child. Over the last 11 years his shows have been seen on the Las Vegas Strip, under the Saint Louis Arch and even on America’s Got Talent! Over the years, he has been the recipient of many awards for stage and performance excellence. In 2015, he was Elliot Hofferth named the Pacific Coast Teen Stage Magician of the year!
