Skagit’s Best 2017

Skagit County Businesses Skagit County is best known for the fertile valley of the Skagit River, its scenic nature, quaint shops and small town feel. Skagit County’s businesses have something for everyone; from museums and art galleries to whale watching trips, wineries, brew pubs, distilleries, bars and bistros. A thriving farming industry, refineries, shipbuilding/repair, engineering and manufacturing work provide many of the top private jobs in the county. Skagit County’s rich agricultural history has sustained the region for generations. Local farmers produce about $300 million worth of crops, livestock and dairy products on approximately 100,000 acres of land¹. By 2013, more than 40 organic farms coving 6,700 acres had combined for more than $14 million in sales2. About 100 different crops are grown across Skagit

Best New Business

Bastion Brewing Company “You’ll never go thirsty” The Skagit Valley Herald is pleased to honor 2017’s Best New Business: Bastion Brewing Co. The brewpub opened its doors on September 27, 2016, and has already attracted a loyal following. Locally-owned and operated by husband and wife team Joe and Cristine Behan, the business has made an impact on the community and its employees. Said Joe, “We were caught off guard by the growth of the brewery; our brewing facility reached capacity quicker than

we anticipated.” As a result, equipment has been ordered to double the on-site brewing capacity this fall with the goal of adding an off-site production facility down the road. With the production increase in effect, the sales team will work to grow self-distribution to pubs and restaurants and keg sales out of the tap room. About being selected “Best New Business” Joe said, “We were pleasantly

surprised. The whole team has been working so hard and it put a smile on everyone’s faces. Our employees have put in so much effort and this felt like a good reward.” Not originally from Skagit County, the U.S. Navy brought both Joe and Cristine to the area. First meeting when they were stationed at Whidbey Island, the couple got to know each other while flying in combat together in Iraq. Joe retired from Bastion cont. on page 5

the U.S. Navy in 2014 after serving eight years as a Navy Growler pilot. Cristine has been a naval aviator for seven years and is currently serving in the naval reserves at Whidbey Island. After getting to know the seaside community, the Behan’s elected to make Anacortes their home. The couple has a four-month-old daughter named Maddie. Said Joe, “It’s been a busy year but she is the greatest thing in the world!” Bastion Brewing Co. was born out of Joe’s passion for home brewing – which he did for 22 years - and a dream to own his own business. After retiring from the U.S. Navy, Joe and Cristine turned his dream into reality when they opened the growing brewery and restaurant. The name of the brewpub has special meaning for the Behan’s because both Joe and Cristine

had friends who served at Camp Bastion in Afghanistan. In addition, the word bastion represents “setting a standard” for the quality of their food and microbrews. The business has two sides; a tap room and full-service restaurant with a family atmosphere. Guests enjoy fast, casual dining and delicious craft beer for a range of palates. The full menu includes soups and salads, kid’s meals, fish and chips, hand crafted burgers, wings and appetizers, wraps and hand-built sandwiches. Just ask and the staff will help pair beer with food. Bastion’s on-site brewing is handled by professional artisans using the highest quality ingredients. Joe is the assistant brewer; working alongside head brewer Evan Barnett, formerly of Anacortes Brewing. The tap room has 19 tap handles

with 14 Bastion microbrews and two to three guest ciders on tap at any given time. Guests can experience the “rich, full-flavor of the Northwest” through six flagship beers and eight seasonally rotating tap handles. Coming up for fall is the brewery’s Scotch Ale, Black Lager and their Anniversary Brew: the Triple Red IPA that will be launched on October 27. Bastion welcomes feedback for its brewers! Apart from great food and beer, one of the business goals is to make the brewery a destination spot. The Bastion Bastion cont. on page 7
