About the cover
Rich Heidecker piloted a skiff out to Fidalgo Bay so photographer Briana Alzola, bottom right, and sidekick Colette Weeks, left, could get shots of Mr. and Mrs. Claus arriving in Anacortes. The Anacortes American staff got a tip that Mr. and Mrs. Claus were taking in the sights of Fidalgo Bay earlier this fall and managed to capture these photos of them aboard Andy Stewart’s S/V Windsong. Stewart and wife, Kristin Stewart, of Emerald Marine lived on the 36-foot wooden yawl early in their marriage, sold it and it eventually came back to them. Helping Stewart sail the
Clauses in the bay was Kevin Pratt. Piloting the skiff to get our photographer Briana Alzola and sidekick Colette Weeks on the water was Rich Heidecker with Youth Dynamics. Landlubbers Joan Pringle and Jacqueline Allison helped with setup from the dock. The Santa news tip came from Don and Renata Yankacy, who we can’t thank enough for their generous and giving nature.

Santa’s sailing adventure A Christmas Tale
One day, when Santa’s tired elves needed a break, Santa knew just what to do and what steps to take. He invited Mrs. Claus to go on an island shopping trip, and they set a course south on a sleek sailing ship.
The schooner beached at Lovric’s Sea-Craft as a breakwater in 1966 is called La Merced.
They aimed toward Anacortes, across the deep blue sea, to find the best island-themed gifts to go under the Christmas tree. Struck by the beauty of the waterfront town, they docked at Cap Sante Marina and set out to look around. They needed gifts for sailors, mermaids and landlubbers, too. Crafts, jewels, books and decor, … (plus a drink or two). “Where to start, where to start?” called Santa from the dock. As he and his wife took off on their shopping walk.

Marine Supply and Hardware seemed a logical place to go. Santa found all his ship’s needs from the aft to the bow. They found pocket watches, fishing gear and mechanical parts; marine bells, compasses and a slew of tide charts. Santa found an old sextant at the store that was just right to help with their safe return home before Christmas Eve night.

Mrs. Claus wandered down to Lil’ Tugs Children’s Boutique. Looking for toys and little outfits, so adorable and sweet. Owner Michele DeCarlo showed her pajamas and shirts adorned with boats, plus ship wheel-shaped teething toys and nautical raincoats. Then Mrs. Claus headed to Tides to find a scarf and dress. After all, it’s Christmas, and she wants to look her best. While she shopped, Santa ran over to Ace Hardware and grabbed tool gifts for handy folks everywhere.

The weather grew colder as the Clauses walked down the street, so they stopped at Johnny Picasso’s for coffee and a sweet treat. If they’d come a few weeks later, they could have ridden around; on a horse-drawn carriage, up Commercial Avenue and down.
Burton Jewelers was an inviting place to get warm, Anna-Maria Finn showed the Clauses a special Philip Burton charm. Inspired by yin and yang, it was one-half forest and one-half sea. It represents Anacortes — in silver or gold — both lovely.

Gifts galore
Anacortes is the perfect place to find island decor. Smuggler’s Cove is one of many with antiques and more. There are old and new treasures at Elisabeth’s Cottage by the Sea. Whether beads or glass baubles or an eclectic assortment of jewelry.
The American is the 1892 sloop built in the offices of the Anacortes American by the newspaper’s founders.
Fabric
For elves in the workshop, it’s hammers and nails, but Mrs. Claus wanted fabric featuring fishes and sails. In Stitches has plenty of fine cloths and thread for table runners and pillowcases made for sleepy heads. Owner Teresa Alvensleben said homemade gifts come from the heart, And capture the spirit of the recipient, but also the giver in part. Santa checked his letters to see what nice children and grownups need, Then headed to Watermark Book Co. in search of good reads. From old classics to trendy New York Times best-sellers, Patti Pattee keeps her store stocked with the best story-tellers.

DanceWorks shows offer dance fun for the holiday season Whether it’s families looking for a new holiday tradition in the form of a classic ballet or dance enthusiasts seeking a celebration of both dance and the holiday season, Fidalgo DanceWorks has them covered. The dance school will host two shows this December, starting with the holiday classic “The Nutcracker” and followed by its annual Winter Celebration. “The Nutcracker” is at 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 9, and 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 10, at Anacortes High School Brodniak Hall. Tickets from $12 to $17 are available on brownpapertickets.com or at the door.
This year’s show will have a military theme, including a discount for military personnel, DanceWorks Executive Director Julie Wenzel said. The show is set in the 1940s and will include some men in military costumes from the period. There are also several families involved this year, where parents join the DanceWorks dancers on stage for the ballet’s party scene. “The Nutcracker” follows the story of young Clara, who is given a nutcracker as a Christmas gift. Her brother breaks the toy, and she returns in the night to check on it. Suddenly, mice fill the room and everything magically grows to be lifesize, including the nutcracker. Clara is caught in the middle of a battle and helps the nutcracker defeat the Mouse King. She and the nutcracker travel to the Land of Sweets, ruled by the Sugar Plum Fairy, and watch a night of celebratory dances. The Winter Celebration is a show that features all contemporary dance styles, including hip hop, jazz, African, modern and tap. It is at 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec.

All the teachers choreograph different pieces for their dance styles, and all have to do with the holidays or with winter, Wenzel said. So many dancers are involved, and there is only one performance, so the Winter Celebration tends to sell out early, she said. Information: www.fidalgodanceworks.org.
