Hi Everyone. It’s no secret we live in one of the most beautiful places in the world.

The Pacific Northwest and our own City of Mount Vernon are blessed with a natural beauty second to none. The diversity of our parks, paths and trails is amazing and I hope everyone takes the time to learn more about what we have to offer you and your family here in our own back yard.

As spring approaches and we begin to experience some long overdue sun and warmer weather, the Recreation and Enrichment Services Department is working hard on a variety of programs, projects, and plans.

Have you looked out over the valley from the Little Mountain lookout, watched the Skagit River flow past the Riverwalk or got up close and personal along the river banks at Lions or Edgewater Parks? How about enjoying a warm sunny day at Kiwanis Spray Park watching your children or grandchildren run and play

Our programs continue non-stop all year long and we’re now gearing up for another busy season of baseball, softball and soccer. Linda and Lisa, our enrichment and recreational staff, are working their magic balancing act to tie players, teams and field facilities together. No small task as we are experiencing significant growth and the demands for youth programs have never been higher.

PRESCHOOL & YOUNG CHILDREN’S PROGRAMS

YOUTH & TEEN PROGRAMS

LITTLE KICKERS – SUMMER SOCCER INSTRUCTIONAL LEAGUE This league is a great introduction to the sport of soccer for your little one. These young players will be playing 3-4 to a side on micro fields. No scores are kept for games, and coaches will emphasize FUN in their teaching of dribbling, passing and shooting. There will be two weeks of practices before four weeks of weekday evening games. Volunteer Coaches & team sponsors needed!

REGISTRATION ENDS JUNE 30!!

AGES: Littlest Kickers: Boys & Girls ages 3-4 years Little Kickers: Boys & Girls ages 5-6 years PRACTICE: Practices will be outdoors, on weekday evenings & determined by the coaches.

1st Practice is week of July 17th. Coach will call you with 1st Practice day/time.

GAMES: Each team will have 6 scheduled games during the month of August on Tuesdays and/or Thursdays FEE: $50

SKYHAWKS MULTI SPORT CAMP For this program we combine (soccer, flag football and baseball) into one fun-filled week. Athletes will learn the rules and essentials skills of each sport along with vital life lessons such as respect and teamwork. Participants receive a t-shirt, ball and a merit award.

SKYHAWKS MINI HAWK MULTI SPORT CAMP This baseball, basketball, and soccer program gives children a fun and positive first step into athletics. Through games and activities, campers explore balance, hand/eye coordination, and skill development at their own pace.

Participants receive a t-shirt, ball, and a merit award.

DATE/TIME: July 24-28th 9am-12pm FEE: $119 AGES: 4-7 years MIN: 15/ MAX: 18 LOCATION: Hillcrest Park NOTE: Participants should bring two snacks, a water bottle, running shoes and sunscreen.

SKYHAWKS FLAG FOOTBALL Campers will learn skills on both sides of football including the core components of passing, catching, and de-flagging or defensive positioning - all presented in a fun & positive environment. The week ends with the Skyhawks Sports Bowl, giving participants a chance to showcase their skills on the gridiron! Participants receive a t-shirt, football and player evaluation.

SKYHAWKS SOCCER CAMP Using our progressional curriculum, your young athlete will gain the technical skills and sport knowledge required for the next step into soccer. Designed for beginner and intermediate players, this camp focuses on dribbling, passing, shooting, and ball control. Participants

James, Tom and the entire staff of our Operations and City Work Program are hard at work cleaning up the results of a windy and rainy winter. They are out there every day removing fallen trees and limbs, keeping our restrooms, paths and trails clean and accessible, all the while planning and executing a number of big projects to make things even better in our Parks. The baseball and soccer fields are at the top of the list for more than a little TLC. You’ll see a new Lion’s Park restroom later this year and the historical Hillcrest Lodge BBQ pit will receive a facelift as we complete some underground repairs.

We couldn’t do all these amazing things without the incredible generosity and time provided by the hundreds of volunteers helping us out. With your assistance we are doing amazing and exciting stuff and we’re proud to work with each and every one of you. 4 CHILD AND BABYSITTING SAFETY CLASS The Child and Babysitting Safety (CABS) program is a community education program that covers child safety and basic care techniques for infants and children. CABS stresses the priority to keep the babysitter and the children they care for safe. Some of the topics covered in the program: before the parents leave, playtime, telephone calls/stranger knocks, hand washing, meal times, bedtime, and providing emergency care (first aid and CPR).

Camp is open to youth ages 8-17 years old. All skill levels, beginners to advanced are welcome!

Prizes throughout the week make the camp fun! Bring your own racket and water bottle, also must wear tennis shoes. Sign up by July 7th and receive a free Camp T-shirt.

Registration fees include transportation, supervision and admission fees but do not include food, beverages or other purchases unless specifically noted. Participants should bring money for food and other purchases and wear weather appropriate and comfortable clothing and sturdy walking shoes. All trips depart from and return to Hillcrest Park, 1717 South 13th Street in Mount Vernon.

BLOEDEL RESERVE AND BEAUTIFUL BAINBRIDGE ISLAND Travel via van and ferry to pastoral Bainbridge Island.

Visit Winslow Way and enjoy a delicious no-host lunch as well as browse the wonderful selection of boutiques, museums, tasting rooms and more before heading over to the 150-acre Bloedel Reserve. Once here enjoy a private walking tour featuring various gardens, forests, ponds, meadows and the estate home. Please note: The reserve tour includes uneven terrain and up to 1 mile of walking.

Enjoy an exquisite 3-course meal at Bistro 101, the award-winning café at the Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts before exploring all the shops, stalls, walking trails and public market.

5 PYBUS PUBLIC MARKET, OHME GARDENS AND MORE First stop: Pybus Public Market…Wenatchee’s unique, award-winning destination including cafes, wineries, specialty shops, farmer’s market and more. After enjoying a delicious no-host lunch and shopping head to Ohme Gardens. This hillside gem is an amazing evergreen oasis and features natural stone pathways, gardens, panoramic views, mesmerizing waterfalls and tranquil pools. Last stop: Leavenworth. Grab an afternoon treat, browse the shops and stroll throughout the quaint Bavarian village before heading home. Please note: the gardens include stairs, narrow pathways and some uneven surfaces.

Today’s adventure includes a walk along the famous waterfront, a no-host lunch at one of its iconic food stops, a tour of the historic Alki Point Lighthouse and last but not least, exploring “The Junction” retail hub and Bakery Nouveau.

SAN JUAN ISLAND EXPLORATION Set sail across the Salish Sea for a day full of fun in the sun, fact finding and island exploration. Destinations include American Camp, Lime Kiln Point State Park and Friday Harbor. Explore the parks, enjoy the panoramic views, learn about the famous Pig War, perhaps spot an orca whale, nibble on your own picnic lunch and then peruse Friday Harbor all before catching the ferry back home.

CASCADE PASS HIKE Enjoy nature at its finest! Considered one of the most beautiful day hikes in the NW, the views of the mountains, old growth trees, wildflowers and more will be breathtaking. Once here enjoy a private tour and tasting of all their delicious confections!

But alas, Skagit County Parks and Recreation is here to save you from the grim reaper’s winter sickle, providing plenty of opportunities to fit in two summers of fun in one gluttonous summer smorgasbord. I’ll provide you with two spring events that will prime you up-- even before we officially hit summer:

Barney Lake Platform Dedication Join me on a hike to the new Barney Lake Viewing Platform on the Centennial Trail at 10:00AM on Earth Day, April 22nd.

A cohort of fine citizens from the Skagit Leadership program recently built a viewing platform in the Barney Lake Basin for recreationalists to enjoy the local Skagit Valley views. The platform will present hikers with close range views of active lowland farmlands and during the cool weather months, allow visitors to observe migrating Trumpeter Swans as they take flight from one of their preferred refuges in their southerly range. Just to the south of proposed platform visitors are sure to take notice of Big Rock, a geological wonder and place of distinctive Salish People legend. This unique geological feature rises ominously from the surrounding fertile farmlands, presenting a remnant GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL FASTPITCH LEAGUE Coming off its thirteenth season, this league will play an eight game season with all games on Wednesday nights. The focus is as a developmental league for high school teams to work on preparations for the 2018 season. The league is open to all players 18 years and under. Team rosters should be made up of players from the same school district. (The possibility of a small percentage of out of district players on a roster has not been ruled out.)

Cross Island Trail Hike Please join me on an annual birthday pilgrimage to what’s irrefutably the largest tree on Fidalgo Island on June 10th at 10:00AM. This will be the inaugural pilgrimage utilizing a skillfully constructed path that will allow us to all get hugging distance of this majestic tree. Bryan Elliott, Kecia Fox, Bob Vaux and I located this tree thirty years ago after heeding an ancient Elvrum hippie legend alluding to the existence of a pair of sacred remnant old growth cedars, professedly located somewhere a quarter mile above “naked man valley.” There were no trails anywhere near this area three decades ago but after cresting Mt. High-G, we spiraled down a slender ravine that led us to a pair of cedar steeples poking high above the vale. One tree has since succumbed to the ruthless Hanukah windstorm of ‘06. This year we’ll start our hike from Bowman Bay at 10:00am, heading north past the tree and along the new Tursi Trail as we make our connection into the ACFL. From there we’ll continue north towards town via Mount Erie and Heart Lake trails. When the hike is done we’ll find a place to rehydrate. It’s my hope the same four who discovered the tree thirty years ago will all be able to attend and share stories along the crusade. and players to our Summer Camp schedule.
