n an era wrought with perpetual political divisiveness, the 2019 Fair will provide the perfect venue for luring the folks from the Skagit hinterlands to intermix Parking Available for $5 at the with the herds of stiff-collared urbanites dwelling the heartlands. Fairs have a long South Gate at the Fairgrounds history of bringing people together –a chance for farmers to cast off from their rural Fair Location, Times & farmsteads towards town to unify with the inner community. They call it HONKAHILLAROCKABILLY...it’s like an ol’ coal train grumblin’ down the side of a mountain...a king crab block buzzing on the Bering Sea...a MS 880 Magnum Stihl (with a 59” bar) roarin’ through timber...a sound that permeates Americana! skagitvisitor.com

Sky Colony: Main Stage: Thursday, August 8th, 8:00 p.m. The Pacific Northwest, namely Skagit Valley Washington, has always been home to this band. They have taken their show around Washington State, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, northern California, and Oregon. They have performed at festivals in Oregon and Washington, such as Britt Festival, Subdued Stringband Jamboree, and Summer Meltdown. They have also opened for bands such as Shook Twins, Johanna Warren, The California Honeydrops, Flowmotion, Karl Blau, and Darlingside. The Sky Colony’s songs are a simple blend of melodies and complex harmonies. “It’s a mixture of the call of the Cascadian wilderness and the 60’s psychedelia era” (Tom Franks, Folkwords UK). Time upon time it has been deemed unique. They create a sound of “luminous spirituality that sets a fire in the mind” (Scot Casey, What’s Up Magazine). Their first full-length album “In A Dream” was released in February, 2015, and featured Molly Hazel on banjo, vocals, and bass. This record was publicized by Sue DuMond, with independent radio play at stations worldwide. Music critics were astounded at the “a lack of special effects, just pure musicianship.” (John Apice, No Depression) SKAGIT COUNTY FAIR

4-H & FFA at the Skagit County Fair

T

he Skagit County Fair is proud of its longstanding partnership with Skagit County’s 4-H and FFA clubs who come to the fair to showcase their skills and talents. Students in FFA programs meet at school, while 4-H clubs run all year long. The clubs teach children about hands on learning, community spirit, leadership, sciences, arts and agriculture. In addition to animal projects, students are given opportunities to learn about vet science, food science, floriculture, engineering, technology and much more through a hands-on approach to learning.

Youth who participate in 4-H horse programs develop important life skills such as leadership, responsibility, a sense of self-worth, sportsmanship, teamwork, and community service. Said Rachel, “My experience in the 4-H leadership program was life changing. In my earlier 4-H years I was very shy. I was very introverted and less eager to push myself to do hard things. Through the leadership program I gained the ability to plan events, teach workshops, and lead activities for very large groups of other 4-H youth. This has contributed greatly to my improved public speaking ability.” When asked what advice she has for

FFA

as many new and exciting experiences as possible.

T

he FFA organization was founded in 1928 by 33 farm boys under the name the Future Farmers of America; FFA now has almost 500,000 members in 7,000 chapters nationwide with millions of alumni. The organization teaches classes in more than 300 careers in the food, fiber and natural resources industry including animal science, horticulture, floral design, Ag mechanics and metal art.

The Burlington-Edison FFA chapter has a long tradition of involving its members in the many different facets of agriculture that the Skagit Valley area has to offer. Students take pride in exhibiting their various projects at the fair each summer, and during the school year are involved in everything from Trapshooting and Ag Mechanics to Floral and Nursery and Vet Science, Food Science and Leadership training in many different ways.

FFA motto: “Learning to do, doing to learn, earning to live, living to serve.”

Mount Vernon FFA is one of the first five chapters in Washington State! We’re home to the first female National FFA Officer, Julie Smiley! Throughout the year our chapter is dedicated to community service and leadership; we work on projects with Skagitonians to Preserve Farmland, Neighbors in Need Food Bank, and other organizations. Besides animal projects, our Floriculture and Veterinary Science teams shined at competition this year; bringing home several awards!

Skagit County has three FFA chapters: Sedro-Woolley FFA not only rests at the gateway to the North Cascades but is also home to the State Champion Logging Rodeo team for 19 years in a row! In Sedro-Woolley, we’re all about getting outdoors - whether it’s to tend to animals, practice for the Nursery contest, or explore the beauty of the Pacific Northwest. Our chapter emphasizes leadership and personal development through action and involvement and we strive to offer members

Dino Crew Entertainment NW

“Bringing the Past to the Present” Saturday, August 10, 11:00 a.m. – 9 p.m. The Dino Crew will be bringing its dinosaur entertainment to the Skagit County Fair for the first time ever. The Dino Crew specializes in bringing “the dinosaur theme” to life! Fair goers will be surprised by the details in the car-sized mechanical dinosaur suits and how realistic they can be. Said owner Tyler McGuinn, “We create an experience that children and adults alike can feel that sense of amazement when your imagination takes over visualizing these intriguing animals roaming the earth. We strive to ensure everyone walks away smiling and wakes up tomorrow wondering if dinosaurs are really extinct.” There will be one LG Dino hanging by the Dino Crew cage for pictures and another roaming the grounds looking for friends to play with on Saturday. There will also be several small baby Dinos coming out to interact with fair goers. Despite their ferocious looks and intimidating roars, the dinosaurs have super likable personalities, and they are great with people of all ages! For the 2-5 year old’s they can act like a gentle puppy, or for the older ones they can behave like a wild dinosaur. Said McGuinn, “I am looking forward to continuing our community growth and expansion through local events like this to show people who we are.” Learn more at http://dinocrewentertainment.com. 12

If you’re in the audience, you may be randomly called up to participate in an illusion, find objects flying over your head or see an egg hatch into a live bird in an audience member’s hands. Joked the professor, “picture a free range 4-H`er sliced into four pieces - then restored. (Sorry, no extra 4-H points.)” Said Bamboozle on the inspiration behind his show, “I had a vision to re-create - for a new generation - a production in the flavor of the oldtime traveling side show stages from the glory days of the great showman P.T. Barnum, but with a modern twist.” Said Professor Bamboozle on 14

The Butterfly Encounter Daily exhibit from 10:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday and 10:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m. Friday and Saturday. utterflies are beautiful, magical creatures and Skagit County Fair visitors will get to experience them up close for the first time with The Butterfly Encounter. Inside the screened-in butterfly exhibit, over 100 butterflies will be released on opening day. Come by to observe the butterflies and learn about the life-cycle of a butterfly. Visitors will be shown how to feed butterflies and then have the chance to feed them nectar on a feeding stick. This is a FREE exhibit at the Fair, but if you’d like to take the experience home with you, butterfly kits may be available for purchase. Said co-owner Deborah Lurie, “We are looking forward to creating a magical time for all the fair goers who visit our butterfly exhibit and hopefully educate them a little on the monarch butterfly. This will be an experience everyone will remember!” The Butterfly Encounter is family-owned and operated by husband and wife team Deborah and Jason Lurie. It is based out of Spring Hill, Florida but they travel all over the US to bring the Butterfly Encounter to as many people as possible. When asked about the vision behind the business, Deborah said, “We have four girls and everything to them growing up was butterflies and fairies in wings. My husband got the idea to start the Butterfly Encounter seven years ago and we just kind of went with it. We implemented the concept, tweaked it and every year it got better and better. We are self-taught and have also learned a great deal from the butterfly breeders that we worked with.” The company was opened in 2013 and prides itself on treating every customer like they are a part of the family. The team is looking forward to welcoming you at the 2019 Skagit County Fair! Visit http://www.thebutterflyencounter.com/ for more information.
