2019 Berry Dairy Days Schedule

Berry Dairy Days History B

erry Dairy Days began as the “Strawberry Festival” but despite the name change a couple decades later the festivities have been a consistent part of the community for the past 82 years! Berry Dairy Days continues to celebrate Burlington’s history, agriculture, farming, traditions and community. In 1937, the first annual “Berry Dairy Days” was launched when the Burlington volunteer firefighters organized a fundraiser to purchase new equipment. The community event served as a fundraiser and a way to celebrate strawberry farming in Burlington. To add excitement and draw a crowd, they made a giant strawberry shortcake that was pulled down Fairhaven Avenue in red wagons. Pieces of the cake were handed to the crowd that had gathered to catch a glimpse of the shortcake. As the festival grew not only in size but in scope, in 1965 the event was handed over to the Burlington Chamber of Commerce to continue the tradition. Then President Roger Hulbush, along with other community members, decided to re-name the festival “Berry Dairy Days” to reflect the growing influence of dairy business and ongoing strawberry farming in Burlington. Many community members have fond memories of Burlington Berry Dairy Days throughout the years. Duane Stowe is the owner of the second oldest business in Burlington, Stowe’s Shoes & Clothing. He remembers the local strawberry processing plant and the affect it had on the community. Roger Hulbush is the owner of the oldest business in Burlington, Hulbush Funeral Home. He recalls one of his many memories of the Berry Dairy Days Grand Parade: “It was about 1970 and local firefighters dressed up as clowns to help line up the parade participants and drove a convertible car in the parade.”

June 14 - 16, 2019

Berry Dairy Days is one of the oldest festivals in Skagit County but the Burlington Chamber of Commerce keeps it fresh and fun every year while maintaining traditional favorites like the Grand Parade, Festival in the Park and endless amounts of strawberry shortcake all weekend long. Join us for a weekend full of community events and strawberry shortcake! For a full schedule of events or more information please see the event schedule, visit www. Grandfather who came from Sweden. There were only 40 acres cleared, and Lyle’s grandfather cleared the other 80 acres of stumps. Lyle was born and raised in the Bow area and grew up on the farm. Lyle was in the Air Force when his father suddenly died in 1952; because of that and his two younger brothers came home to operate the family farm. Lyle married MerriLou Shepler from Burlington in 1954. They have five sons who graduated from college and eventually came home and are involved in the farm operation. At one time they were involved in growing peas and partnered in a stationary pea viner set that gave the local students summer employment. In 2006, their son Dean was called overseas to serve in Desert Storm and then Afghanistan. Lyle and MerriLou bought an adjoining farm during this time and started their first organic dairy farm there. Dean is now retired as a Lt. Col. in the Army Reserves. In 2012, the original farm was also converted to Organic. The family is Lyle and MerriLou and their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Rich and Shaun (Chad, Jesse, Chris and Michelle), Ron and Jan, David, Dean and Dani (Drew 2019 Grand Marshal is the Lyle and Dylan), Mark and Barbara Wesen Family: (Miranda and Mitchell) and two he Burlington Chamber of Commerce great-grandchildren. Fred Stump Memorial Salmon Barbeque E

njoy a delicious salmon meal during Berry Dairy Days! The Fred Stump Memorial Salmon Barbeque is one of the Burlington Edison Kiwanis Club’s biggest annual fundraisers. The money raised goes to support Kiwanis Club’s charitable contributions including between $11,000 and $13,000 worth of scholarships to the Burlington-Edison High School ($10,600 was awarded in 2018 because one scholarship had no applicants), funding the Key Club (the high school chapter of Kiwanis) and various local senior and children’s charities and programs. About 1300 to 1500 pounds of salmon are served every year over the two day event. The meal includes char-broiled salmon with secret sauce, baked potato with sour cream and butter on the side, coleslaw, dinner roll, beverage and an orange/white Dixie cup ice cream. According to longtime Burlington resident Roger Hulbush, the secret sauce was invented in 1957 by his dad Walter. His dad made the sauce for years then passed duties on to Roger. Roger eventually asked his trusted cleaning lady to take over the sauce making only to find out that she left out a key ingredient for years. The cost of the meal is $13 (no children’s meals this year). There are three ways to enjoy the wonderful salmon barbeque fundraiser: The Friday night barbeque is at the Skagit River Park soccer fields. It Continued on page 10

Berry Dairy Days Road Run T

he 2019 Berry Dairy Days Road Run marks the 41st annual event! The runs are a popular feature of the Berry Dairy Days festival, attracting about 500 participants from all around the region including local runners and experienced marathoners. There is a run for participants at all levels! The races have been certified since 2008, which has created an even bigger draw among serious runners and those who want to accurately benchmark their progress. However, the race attracts beginner level runners/walkers as the course is both scenic and easy. The runs take place on flat and fast courses while showcasing beautiful Skagit Valley. On Sunday, June 16 race check-in and same-day registration will begin at 7 a.m. Early start is at 8 a.m. and the official race start times are at 9 a.m. The registration booth and the start line are both on the corner of Oak Street and Fairhaven Avenue. All races end at 11 a.m.

5K - Beginning runners should try this 5K run as it is flat, friendly and affordable: The familiar two mile “out and back” route was changed to a 5K event in 2015 with the enthusiastic support of the runners. Participants get to enjoy a portion of the scenic Skagit River Dike venue but finish down main street (Fairhaven Avenue). The course is looped out and back, which allows runners of all levels to cheer and encourage their fellow run participants.

Road Run girls Bryanna Jones, Madeleine Wing, and Stephanie Schlimmer show their spirit.

Half Marathon – The half marathon course is ideal for anyone who aspires to run a half marathon: The popular USATF certified half marathon was added seven years ago and runs flat along the scenic Skagit River Dike with 10K - Beginner, intermediate and advanced runners the cooperative assistance of Dike District volunteers. The course has been voted by participants as the along Fairhaven Avenue to Gardner Street. This route has been consistent for more than a decade and allows runners to compare most scenic half marathon in the area. Race organizers are thankful for great cooperation from the run times with past years. Part of the course overlaps the Half Dike District in the half marathon event effort, the Burlington Marathon; allowing runners to be spectators while they race. Today, race fees go to support local track and cross-country teams who assist in course marshalling and management of the race. The BurlingtonEdison High School cross country track team has brought a lot of pride to the community; winning state titles in 2006, 2007 and 2009. As Duane’s kids grew up and he became more involved in other festival events, the Burlington Parks & Recreation department took over the race in 1997. The Burlington Parks and Recreation Department ran the race through 2010 but decided to place their focus on the large Friday evening soccer tournament and fireworks presentation. They handed the reins over to local, well-respected running enthusiasts Chris Whan and Kevin Ryan in 2011. Over the years, the running routes have changed multiple times. The original runs were four and seven miles long along Pulver Road. Next, the runs changed to “out and back” on Anacortes Street before settling into their current forms. This race begins the Summer Race Circuit that includes ‘Tesoro’ Refinery Runs and the Sedro Woolley Fourth of July Runs.
