DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE: Hi Everyone. Happy ew ear! As we look back on 2019 there were several great projects and improvements to our park system. Here are a few of the highlights: sers of Bakerview Park are enjoying the benefits of the recently completed installment of a 10’ wide sidewalk from Fir Street into the park and new pavement of almost 900’ of the entrance road. A shout out for the incredible efforts of the Mount Vernon Parks Foundation and their continued support and expert maintenance of our trails all year. They were also key partners in establishing an 18-hole disc golf course at Edgewater that has received rave reviews from users. The kickoff of our ten year partnership with the new MCA services program has been successful in providing $50,000 a year in free memberships and swimming and walking passes to City of Mount Vernon residents. We have a drawing every 6 months so don’t be discouraged if you were not selected first go around keep trying. Two art pieces were added to the City’s collection of public art including the butterfly at Kiwanis Park and “The Guardian” sculpture at Little Mountain Park. We value art in our community and generous donations that make it possible. A two-tiered, 55 car parking lot is nearing final phases at Little Mountain Park. Weather delays have pushed out the anticipated completion to early summer 2020. As we continue to repair, upgrade and plan for the future of our parks and enrichment programs we always welcome your input and guidance.

“Creating Community through People, Parks and Programs”
From the Director’s Chair Director Brian Adams, Skagit County Parks and Recreation
As we head into a new year it’s a good time for us to reflect on our accomplishments, relish our progress, and route our path forward. From the islands to our west to the Cascades on our east, Skagit County is bisected by the Skagit River, peppered with rising peaks, and brimming with a mosaic of limnic waters. Skagit County hosts a scrumptious smorgasbord of parks and public places for those ready feast in its fortunes. When great park projects come together it’s generally because a lot of individuals and agencies have banded together. Our partners and volunteers have been a vital component of our success. Groups such as the Skagit Trail Builders, Washington Trail Association, Skagit Land Trust, Skagit Fisheries Enhancement, Skagit Valley College, and countless others have been and continue to be instrumental in making Skagit County a better place to recreate. By bringing in partners we can leverage grants, generate community support, create synergies, and
accomplish much more than could be done alone. By working together, we can make our parks and open spaces more conducive for recreation and more accommodating to wildlife. It takes a village and we can use a few good volunteers in 2020! Make a New Year’s resolution to spend your time volunteering at one of Skagit County’s more popular parks. Join us in building trails at the Northern State Recreation Area in 2020. We have set the table with a number of volunteer events scheduled. Training, tools, gloves, snacks, water and lunch are all provided. Volunteer sessions are rain or shine, so prepare for varying weather. We also suggest wearing sturdy shoes and long pants, since tools are being used. All volunteer work events start at 10am and end at 4:30pm.
