ounded by three friends from the Skagit Valley, The Office Tavern is a brand-new social establishment that provides a casual sit down “foodie” vibe in an upscale tavern setting. Travis Coulter, Tony Pratt, and Joe Krivanek had always wanted to open a bar and purchased the building at 112 N. Cherry St. in Burlington right before COVID-19 hit. Despite the option to back out of the deal, they decided to keep the building and pursue their dream; taking the extra time that COVID-related closures allowed them to carefully plan their vision. They took the building down to studs and completely re-built it with an appealing esthetic. The grand opening was on February 26, 2021.

The Tavern features a nice ambiance with indoor and outdoor seating, and lots of TVs! Meals and drinks can be enjoyed at indoor and outdoor dine-in seating and through call-in take out. The space has a partly covered outdoor area with lovely built-in heaters and curtains to keep in the heat in the covered part, allowing it to remain open year-round. The uncovered area has two fire pits and torches along the fence line. Whether you are looking for an ice-cold local beer after a long work day, or you’re craving an inspired cocktail alongside a delicious meal, The Office Tavern has what you’re looking for. The bartenders are becoming known for their special craft cocktails, unique to the Tavern, and the beer selection is always rotating, with a focus on local options. General Manager, Jessica Walker, describes the food as locally sourced with super fresh ingredients; with vegetables from Skagit County and meat from the Seattle Meat cooperative. The majority of the food is made from scratch in-house. Dishes include a classic tavern burger, a couple of specialty burgers and pastas and fish and chips. There are a couple of Mexican-fusion style dishes on the menu as well. The black and blue salad is very popular, but Jessica says her favorite item is the shrimp tostadas. The Office Tavern is open seven days a week for lunch, dinner, and a late-night menu. Happy Hour is from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturdays. Said Walker, “When it comes to challenges because of COVID-19, we are definitely dealing with supply issues and a lack of kitchen staff. No suppliers are keeping up with all we need right now with random items out of stock and it’s been really hard to find kitchen staff.” As far as being voted as one of the best new businesses in Skagit County, Jessica said, “It’s very exciting. It means we’re doing something right. We have a ton of regulars already and we love them; it feels pretty wonderful that the community voted for us.” The team prides itself on offering great food and even better service. It’s also the only patio in Burlington where you can watch a game! Come try the newest tavern in Burlington!

The store-front, which was opened on January 2, 2021, is located on Hwy 99 across from Franz bakery in a house that’s over 100 years old. Said, Narwal, “I was inspired to bring a modern feel to our business inside an old building.” The staff are friendly and knowledgeable; pin-pointing exactly what you need is their number one goal. Greenhouse Cannabis strives to create a safe and welcoming space for anyone 21+ to come and enjoy legal cannabis. lue Taco is a new, family-owned Mexican restaurant located in beautiful Mount Vernon. The owners, Blanca Zamora and Carlos Cruz Martinez, describe Blue Taco as a taqueria with a twist. Said Blanca, “the food is a twist of flavor and 100% authentic Mexican.” Both Blanca and Carlos cook in the restaurant, attributing their skills to their parents and tasting the food through the years. The name, Blue Taco, was inspired by three of the items served at the restaurant: their delicious blue corn sopes, hand-made blue tortillas (Tuesdays), and blue huarachon. Every item on the menu is cooked fresh, from scratch, right in front of the customers. There are different types of salsas and agua frescas nearly every day. In addition to the restaurant, Blue Taco is open for all kinds of catering jobs, including weddings and baptisms. Their taco combo is a crowd favorite. Open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., the busy restaurant is ready to serve mouth-watering Mexican cuisine to locals and visitors alike. Dine-it, takeout and outdoor seating are all available. The restaurant is also set up with Uber Eats, Grubhub, DoorDash, and Munchie Dude for anyone who wants delivery. Blanca has lived in and out of Mount Vernon since 1998, while Carolos grew up in Lynnwood and had a Mexican restaurant in Skagit County. Originally, the dream was to open a large restaurant in Mount Vernon but because of Covid, the couple chose a smaller space; opening at 303 Pine St. on March 9, 2021. The couple says they feel excellent about being chosen as a finalist for Skagit’s Best New Business and feel very welcome in the community. Big news! The couple is opening a second location in Mount Vernon called Blue Taco Restaurant & Bar. If everything goes according to plan, the establishment will be open on October 13.
