2021 Wedding Trends –

Celebrating Love

During a Pandemic

The biggest wedding trend of 2021 is getting married now and saving the party for later.

This is, of course, because of event size restrictions in place to protect people from contracting Covid-19. In January, Gov. Jay Inslee announced the ‘Healthy Washington’ Coronavirus reopening plan that affects weddings. Couples eager to start their married lives together are making the best of the situation by saying intimate “I-dos” now with plans for a large celebration later. Small, weddings – known as micro-weddings - will also continue into 2021. Couples are focusing on intimate ceremonies that allow them to celebrate with up to 25 close family and friends. While there is a trend toward more informal gatherings overall, micro-weddings often blend formal and

informal traditions with the benefit of a higher budget per head. This gives couples the opportunity to spoil their guests with high-end, specialized menus and wine pairings, personalized wedding favors and other unique ideas such as signature cocktails created by the wedding couple. Many who choose to have a private ceremony this year will use Augmented Reality (AR) to include their loved ones through live streaming of the event and even drones that capture arial footage. AR will also be used for other reasons in 2021. Brides will use it to tour wedding venues and to try on wedding gowns. AR wedding invitations will offer guests a sneak-peak at the venue. A trend that will grow in 2021 is the extended wedding, which translates to small get-togethers with different sets of people over longer periods of time like a long-weekend. This allows the couple to celebrate with special groups of people in their life without having a large gathering. Sustainable, ECO weddings are more popular than ever. Many couples want to celebrate in a responsible way by avoiding unnecessary waste and choosing eco-friendly options. From locally-sourced, seasonal produce to recycled flowers or committing to a plastic-free event; couples are making conscious choices that fit with their values. Another emerging trend is the intentional choice to hire diverse wedding vendors. Decorating trends for 2021 are all about twinkling lights in outdoor tents, fun colors, mismatched seating and state-

ANNOUNCEMENTS, INVITATIONS AND PROGRAMS AT AN AFFORDABLE PRICE! ment greenery. Couples are getting creative with different sized and shaped tables arranged in interesting patterns or with larger space between them to allow guests to gather safely. Couples are looking to make big statements with small elements. A big décor trend right now is the use of cascading greenery and voluminous floral arrangements; either on wedding arches or as centerpieces. Fresh, vibrant, naturedriven color palettes and prints are very popular right now. Wedding guests should expect bold, colorful wedding invitations and décor rather than the demure white and cream- colored themes of the past. When it comes to wedding dresses, the 80s are back! It’s all about the ruffles, layers and sleeves this year – yes, puffed sleeves and long balloon sleeves are in! Square necklines, understated sparkle, capes, and shorter wedding dresses, hemmed above the knee are all big this year. Shorter dresses mean a chance to show off fun shoes with a “pop of color” in either pastels or rich tones. For those looking to make a statement, white wedding jumpsuits are all the rage. Couples are not bound by any wedding rules, of course, but it is always fun to take a look at the trends that will influence wedding choices. If you set out to make your wedding match your lifestyle and your unique relationship; you are sure to create a magical day for yourselves and your guests.

Finding the Perfect Local Wedding Venue A

Skagit’s Best 2019 Winner: Wedding Photographer

6

lot of wedding plans have been delayed or changed because of Covid-19. Many couples opted for smaller weddings, which meant the opportunity to choose more intimate wedding venues. Other couples delayed plans later into 2021 or 2022, hoping that the virus will be under control by then. Whether large or small, the wedding venue sets the mood and affects the budget and amenities that will be available to you. Just like bridal dress designs, venues adapt to changing trends. According to Wedinspire.com, in 2021, “Wedding venues are being greener and becoming more sustainable, many venues that provide in-house catering will use locally sourced produce, as well as other areas within their business to be more eco-friendly.” The trend toward micro-weddings – events with 40 or less guests – will also continue. With a focus on air circulation due to the pandemic, more weddings than ever are being planned in outdoor venues. As a result, there has been a big increase in wedding tent rentals and beautiful lighting that can add a romantic-feel to the setting. The internet has long been a crucial part of choosing a wedding venue and Covid-19 has only increased its use. Most couples browse wedding venues online before choosing which event spaces to see in person. New technology is allowing venues to offer virtual 3D tours of the buildings and grounds; which is a great way to determine if the spaces will match or complement your wedding theme, décor and colors. Before scheduling a tour, it is wise to create a “must-have” list and weed out venues that will not meet your needs. Call ahead to confirm that the space is available for your preferred wedding date, that it is inside your budget, allows your preferred caterer and can accommodate the number of guests you plan to have attend your wedding. When you are touring venues, try to envision how each room or space could be used for your wedding. Will you have the ceremony in the garden and the reception inside? Where will the dance floor be setup? Is there a room or tent that can work as a backup plan in case it is raining? Will there be enough parking? When comparing venues, be sure to ask exactly what comes with the rental fee and get a list of any “extras” that you will be expected to pay for. Some venues allow outside hiring of caterers and bar tenders, for example, while others may require you to use their in-house catering or other exclusive vendors, which Wedding Guide 2021

goskagit.com

could add to your costs. It is important to compare apples to apples; make a spreadsheet of everything included at each venue and weigh the differences in cost as a total package, not just the basic rental fee. Remember, though, that price isn’t everything; you may fall in love with a venue and decide to adjust other aspects of your wedding budget to make it work. Single site wedding and reception venues are the most popular and economical way to go; if you decide to use separate locations it is a good idea to pick places that are close in proximity to avoid losing some guests. Keep in mind that you can often save money by having your wedding on a Friday, Sunday, weekday or in the off-season. Being flexible with your wedding date can also put you in a position to save money. Wedding venues normally book up quickly, especially if you plan to

get married during the height of the Northwest wedding season (June through September) but there may be last minute openings this year because of Covid-19 cancellations. Generally speaking, it is a good idea to reserve your site at least one year in advance. You will typically be asked to make a deposit and sign a contract before the space is officially reserved. Best wishes on finding the perfect location for your special day!

What to do if you have a wedding venue booked now If you already have a wedding venue booked for the next several months, you may be wondering if you can postpone your event. The first step is to email the wedding venue and wedding suppliers and ask how Covid-19 restrictions and safety protocols will affect your wedding day. If you decide to postpone

your wedding, ask about postponement policies and read over your wedding insurance policy. Contact your wedding guests right away to let them know how they will be affected by the changes. If you are ready to book a wedding venue, be sure to call or email to schedule appointments and ask about any Covid-related restrictions.

5 things to consider when choosing your wedding cake As one of the key components of most weddings, decisions about the cake shouldn’t be left until the last minute. Here are five factors to consider before you order yours. 1. The number of guests You want to make sure there’s plenty to go around. However, it would be a shame to waste your money on an excessively large cake and have to throw some out. 2. The wedding theme The cake is as much a part of the decor as the flowers. Don’t hesitate to bring a copy of the invitation, color samples and pictures of the decorations to guide the baker. 3. The design In addition to choosing the shape of the cake and the number of tiers,

consider what decorative elements you’d like to incorporate. Fresh flowers, edible gold leaves and chocolate lace are just some of the many choices. 4. The flavor From praline mouse to passion fruit, you might be surprised by how many options are available. Fortunately, most cake shops offer tastings to help you make your choice. 5. The ingredients If you have a limited budget, determine if you favor high-quality ingredients over a refined look. You should also consider if any of your guests have allergies. Contact cake shops in your area to schedule a consultation and make sure your cake checks all the boxes.

3 reasons to say ‘I do’ to a small wedding While it can be a challenge to narrow down the guest list for such an important event, there’s something to be said for having a small wedding. Here are three reasons to consider opting for an intimate celebration.

1. You’ll save on expenses

designer shoes or a live band.

If you have a limited budget, reducing the number of guests allows you to book a smaller, more affordable venue and lower the cost of food, drinks and decorations. Consequently, it may free up money for luxuries like a gourmet menu,

2. You’ll likely feel less stress

It’s generally easier (or at least less daunting) to plan a small wedding. You’ll have more venue options, the seating chart will be simple and decorating will be quicker. Plus, if you don’t like being in the spotlight, you’ll probably feel more comfortable in front of fewer people.

3. You’ll have more time for your guests A small wedding means you’ll have fewer people to greet during the reception. Rather than circulate from table to table all evening, you’ll be able to spend quality time with loved ones and enjoy every moment to the fullest. Indeed, a small wedding has all the makings of a romantic and memorable day. goskagit.com

Pre-Wedding Checklist Sixteen to Nine Months Before Work out your budget. Pick your wedding party. Start the guest list. Hire a planner, if desired. (A planner will have relationships with—and insights about vendors.) Reserve your date and venues. Location for ceremony and reception. Book your oÿ ciant. Research photographers, bands, florists, and caterers. Eight Months Before Hire the photographer. Book the entertainment. Meet caterers. Purchase a dress. (You’ll need to schedule time for at least three fittings.) Reserve hotel rooms for out-of-town guests. Register. (Sign up at a minimum of three retailers.) Seven to Six Months Before Select and purchase invitations. Start planning a honeymoon. (Make sure that your passports are up-to-date, and schedule doctors’ appointments for any shots you may need.) Shop for bridesmaids’ dresses. (Allow at least six months for the dresses to be ordered and sized.) Meet with the oÿ ciant. (Map out the ceremony and confirm that you have all the oÿ cial documents for the wedding, these vary by county and religion). Send save-the-date cards. Book portable toilets and furniture. Book a florist. Arrange transportation. (Consider limos, minibuses, trolleys and town cars.) Start composing a day-of timeline. (Draw up a schedule of the event and slot in each component, like the cake-cutting, the first dance). 16

Five to Four Months Before Book the rehearsal and rehearsal-dinner venues. Check on the wedding invitations. (Ask the stationer for samples of the finished invitations and revise them to suit your needs.) Select and order the cake. (Some bakers require a long lead time, attend several tastings before committing to any baker.) Purchase wedding shoes and start dress fittings. (Bring the shoes along to your first fitting so the tailor can choose the appropriate length for your gown.) Schedule hair and makeup artists. Choose your music. Three Months Before Finalize the menu and flowers. (You’ll want to wait until now to see what will be available, since food and flowers are a˝ ected by season.) Order favors, if desired. Schedule your second dress fitting. Finalize the order of the ceremony and the reception. Print menu cards, if you like, as well as programs. Purchase the rings. (This will give you time for re-sizing and engraving.) Send your event schedule to the vendors. (Giving them a first draft now allows ample time for tweaks and feedback.) Two Months Before Touch base again with all the vendors. Meet with the photographer. (Discuss specific shots, and walk through the locations that appeal to you.) Review the playlist with the band or DJ. Send out the invitations. (Tip: Mail invitations six to eight weeks before the ceremony.) Submit a newspaper wedding announcement. (See Pg. 13) Enjoy a bachelorette party.

Wedding Guide 2021

One Month Before Enter RSVPs into your guest-list database. Call people who have not yet responded. Get your marriage license. (The process can take up to six days, but it’s good to give yourself some leeway. If you are changing your name, order several copies.) Mail the rehearsal-dinner invitations. Visit the dressmaker for your last dress fitting. Stock the bar. (Now that you have a firm head count you can order accordingly.) Send out as many final payments as you can. Confirm times for hair and makeup and all vendors. E-mail and print directions for drivers of transport vehicles. Week of the Wedding Reconfirm arrival times with vendors. Delegate small wedding-day tasks. (Choose someone to bustle your dress, someone to carry your things, someone to be in charge of gifts.) Send a time line to the bridal party. (Include every member’s contact information, along with the point people you’ve asked to deal with the vendors, if problems arise.) Pick up your dress. Check in one last time with the photographer. (Supply him or her with a list of moments you want captured.) Set aside checks for the vendors. (And put tips in envelopes to be handed out at the event.) Book a spa treatment. (Make an appointment for a manicure and a pedicure the day before the wedding.) Send the final guest list to the caterer and all venues hosting your wedding-related events. Pack for your honeymoon.
