As I close in on the fiftieth anniversary of my induction to this planet, it becomes increasingly apparent that my ongoing contract on this earth isn’t guaranteed and one day I will find myself joining the ranks of the infamous AARP. As I approach the end of the last trimester of my working career, my professional value will begin to wane and one day, it will be time to step aside for the next generation of enthusiastic idealists to forge forward with their plans, proposals, projects, and misgivings, while I mindfully look for less productive ways to waste the days away. Although the relationship between age and productive worth may seem like a morose subject, it shouldn’t be. I can think of lots of ways to be unproductive in retirement, much like the expats I spent time with on my recent trip south of the border. While attaching myself to a seat at “The Shack”, a little expat watering hole on a side street of La Paz, I pushed up within earshot of the salty patrons, most of them wandering sailors looking for a little warmth and company, to ask how they spent days in the slow moving life of the Baja. They all stared blankly at me for a while before glancing back at their beers and burgers, more interested in their lunch than answering the guy with the murky questions. After a couple of minutes of silence, the guy with the bucket hat pushed his contoured brim aside, scratched behind his ear and cleared his throat before looking up to speak. “Well, if you own a sailboat there’s never idle time, always something to figure out how to fix without all the Day/dates: Wednesdays beginning June 12 Time: 6:00 - 9:30 pm Location: Janicki Fields and/or Skagit Playfields Fee: $375.00 per team

parts readily available in the States. We all kind of look after one another--we all have our own set of skills, help each other out and learn to survive with very limited resources.” The rest of the sailors nodded their collective heads in agreement as they all chimed in with similar themes--all very different people but all with a common goal and all very willing to help one another despite their political, social, or economic differences. The community spirit is alive and well in La Paz and as I polished off my burger at The Shack, I thought about the common goals we all have in Skagit County and how important it is that we all continue to work together with our limited resources as we strive to achieve success with our shared visions. We have been very successful in Skagit County over the past century in achieving our mutual objectives, mostly by working collaboratively. We have built a multitude of roads, bridges, parks, utility grids, and put together other a complex network of collective infrastructure, while still finding a way to protect a portion of our resource lands. The next century should be just as productive, especially if we continue to set aside our differences and work collaboratively with our multitude of partners. And when those of us in the final trimester of our careers retire, we will leave a lasting legacy to those that fill the void behind us. I might be approaching fifty but like most of you, I still have a role to fill in Skagit County and for now, my bucket hat will remain fixed to a hook in the closet. With productive years still serving as my first mate, you can bet I won’t be sailing off for at least a good decade… or maybe even two. Fee: $75.00 (includes camp basketball & shirt) Session I: 2nd - 6th Graders (Grade for 2013/2014 school year) Time: 9:00 am – 12:00 pm Session II: 7th - 9th Graders (Grade for 2013/2014 school year) Time: 1:30 – 4:30 pm
