Welcome! We would also like to thank Fred Meyer, Sakuma Bros. Farms and Northwest Wild Foods. Special thanks to the City of Burlington for all their support. For a special treat, visit the Kiwanis Salmon BBQ at the Senior Center on Greenleaf adjacent to Maiben Park and the Berry Cool Car Show along Fairhaven on Sunday. The Festival on Saturday includes the Fred Meyer Grand Parade, live music all day at the Visitor Center, along with food, crafts, vendors and more. The KidsZone is sure to entertain our youngest guests. Come for the parade and stay for the day!

BERRY DAIRY DAYS
History
L
ike communities all around the world for thousands of years, Burlington has an annual festival to celebrate its bounty, skills, traditions, and shared values. Although it started with another name, Berry Dairy Days has been a consistent annual part of the community calendar for decades; 2015 marks the 78th annual event! The event has gone on every year rain or shine right through WWII. In 1937 a group of local volunteer firefighters in need of new equipment

organized the first annual “Strawberry Festival” as a fundraiser, thus called to reflect how strawberry farming dominated Skagit County and for an excuse to make a giant strawberry shortcake sure to draw a crowd. Community “oldtimers” such as Duane Stowe recall that there was a local strawberry processing plant, now long gone. Duane owns the second oldest business in Burlington, Stowe’s Shoes & Clothing, which was opened in 1940. As it grew in size and scope, the festival was handed over to the Burlington Chamber of Commerce in 1965 when Roger Hulbush was president. After a closed door meeting, it was agreed that the festival would be re-named “Berry Dairy Days” to reflect the slow decrease in local strawberry farming and the growing influence of dairy business in the area. Roger’s parents Walter and Irene Hulbush founded the oldest business in Burlington in 1927, Hulbush Funeral Home. After 30 years, Roger
took over in 1957 and ran it until he sold it to an employee in 2003. Roger’s ties to Burlington are deep. He recalls a time when the town had only one billyclubbed police officer, Tony Hanstead. He also has many memories of the Grand Parade including local firefighters dressed up like clowns while lining up participants and driving a convertible car in the parade about 1970. This year there will be two berry suppliers for the famous strawberry shortcakes. Founded by Rick LaMonte over 50 years ago, Northwest Wildfoods is a small, family-owned company in Burlington that is dedicated to finding and presenting the rare and natural wild flavors of the region. This is the first year Northwest Wildfoods will donate to the festival. Located in Burlington, Sakuma Brothers Farms is a family business spanning four generations with over 85 years experience in the small fruit industry. Sakuma will return to donate berries as they have done for at least the
last 16 years. Haggen will also return to donate the shortcakes. The BurlingtonEdison High School Cheerleading Squad sells the shortcakes to raise money for the Burlington Chamber of Commerce and their cheer clinics and custom made uniforms. The cheerleaders sell the shortcakes for $3 each. Strawberry shortcakes will be sold at corresponding events throughout the festival Thursday through Sunday. See the calendar of events for exact times and locations. New Location: the shortcake booth will be located in the old Canton Restaurant parking lot at 423 E. Fairhaven Avenue. There was great success in moving the Festival in the Park to the Visitor Information Center two years ago and it will remain there going forward. As the community grows and evolves, no doubt there will be other changes as well. This festival has a storied history and it will be interesting to see how future generations take over the reins and make it their own.

FRED STUMP MEMORIAL Salmon
T
he Burlington-Edison Kiwanis Club was founded in 1948 by Steve Johns. The club’s first president was Clarence Judy. The Kiwanis mission is to serve the children of the world one child, one family, and one community at a time and the local chapter has always risen to the occasion in Skagit County. The Salmon Barbeque was started by club members in 1949 to raise money for the construction of a local community center; this will be the 66th annual event! Raised in the Puyallup Valley, Fred Stump and his wife Betty moved to Burlington in the early 1960s for a partnership in the Skagit Animal Clinic. Fred joined Kiwanis at that time and became an enthusiastic promoter and participant of the salmon barbeque. Many years he would sell over 200 tickets. Says his widow Betty Stump, “Fred had a way with people…

you didn’t say no to Fred.” The fundraiser was renamed the Fred Stump Memorial Barbeque after he passed away in May 1992. Betty still lives in Burlington and has many memories of enjoying the Berry Dairy Days Festival. The Kiwanis Club built the Maiben Park barbeque pit in the mid 1960s and per tradition, the barbeque will be held there all day Saturday, June 20th from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. even though the festival has moved to the Visitor Information Center. The club will also be hosting the 12th Annual Friday Night Barbeque at the Skagit River Park soccer fields. It will be on June 19th from 5 p.m. to dusk to coincide with the live music and fireworks show. The Kiwanis Club built the barbeque pit at the Skagit River Park soccer fields in 2010. About 1,300 to 1,500 pounds of salmon are served every year in the two-day event. To-go meals are made for business owners who want to feed their employees and support the cause; orders are delivered to businesses on Saturday. Most years more than 150 meals are ordered! To purchase to-go meals please call Les Tokarchuk at (360) 391-3721; orders will be taken up until noon on Friday, June 19th. The meal includes char-broiled salmon with secret sauce, baked potato with sour cream and butter on the side, coleslaw, dinner roll, beverage and an orange/white Dixie cup ice cream. According to longtime Burlington resident Roger Hulbush, the secret sauce was invented in 1957 by his dad Walter. His dad made the sauce for years then passed duties on to Roger. Roger eventually asked his trusted cleaning lady to take over the sauce making only to find out that she left out a key ingredient for years. The barbeque is the Kiwanis Club’s biggest annual fundraiser. The money raised goes to support Kiwanis Club’s charitable contributions including $11,000 worth of scholarships to the Burlington-Edison High School, funding the Key Club (high school chapter of Kiwanis), and various local senior and childrens’ charities. The cost of the meal is $12 for adults and $6 for kids under 12.

BERRY DAIRY DAYS
Runs
O
riginally founded by local resident and business owner Duane Stowe, the Berry Dairy Days Runs have been going strong since the late 1970s. Duane’s original vision was to support the Burlington-Edison track team as his kids were high school track runners at that time. Today, race fees go to support local track and cross country teams who assist in course marshalling and management of the race. The participating schools have brought a lot of pride to the community; in the past decade they won eight back-toback state team cross country titles. As Duane’s kids grew up and he became more involved in other festival events, the Burlington Parks and Recreation Department took over the race in 1997. The Burlington Parks and Recreation Department ran the race through 2010 but decided to place their focus on the large Friday evening soccer tourna-
ment and fireworks presentation, handing over the reins to local, well-respected running enthusiasts Chris Whan and Kevin Ryan in 2011. On Saturday, June 20th, race check-in and same-day registration begin at 6:30 a.m., early start is at 7:30 a.m., and races officially launch at 8:30 a.m. Registration and the start line both take place on the corner of Oak Street and Fairhaven Avenue at the Visitor Information Center. The Berry Dairy Days Runs draw approximately 500 participants from all around the region including local running enthusiasts and experienced marathoners. The races have been certified since 2008, which has created a bigger draw among serious runners.

Grand Parade
romoting community spirit and participation, the 78th annual Berry Dairy Days Fred Meyer Grand Parade is one of the weekend’s highlights. Following tradition, the 2015 Grand Parade will run along Fairhaven Avenue, between Walnut and Skagit Streets in downtown Burlington. The parade is from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 20th. Post-race awards and announcements are scheduled on the Visitor Information Center’s entertainment stage at 1 p.m. The park is located at 520 East Fairhaven Avenue between Oak and Cherry Streets. Park once for the Grand Parade, then walk to the Visitor Information Center for announcements and stay for the Festival in the Park! The Chamber of Commerce is pleased to have Oscar Lagerlund as the parade’s 2015 Grand Marshal. Oscar Lagerlund is one of two Citizens At-Large on the City of Burlington’s Historical Preservation
Board; his term will expire on December 31, 2016. The board was formed in 2010. Oscar is president of Burlington’s Lagerwood Farms and was honored as the Pioneer Family of the Year in 2014. Longtime organizer, the Burlington Chamber of Commerce and sponsor Fred Meyer will be continuing their roles. Burlington-Edison High School clubs traditionally participate heavily in the parade and will provide many types of performers amongst this year’s floats. In good weather, thousands of spectators come out to see the 70-80 floats and performances often including marching bands, drill and dance teams, 4-H clubs, antique John Deere tractors, local gymnasts, dancers, musicians, and representatives from many local businesses, organizations, and civic groups. Weather permitting there will be a “flyover” with planes from the Heritage Flight Museum. Locally selected judges will award
trophies for first, second, and third place parade winners. Parade Participants on Roller Skates The Skagit Valley Roller Derby is made up of three divisions: men’s, women’s and juniors. The skaters and volunteers are well-trained and prepared at the Skateway, giving them the tools needed to safely enjoy the sport. Roller derby provides an outlet for people of all shapes and sizes. Says league founder Shannon Tolbert, “I believe this is our third year in the parade and it is so much fun… there is a place for everyone, on or off skates, here at Skagit Valley Roller Derby.” Email info@skagitvalleyrollerderby.com for more information. Skagit Skate roller rink, located in Burlington, has an artistic team, hockey league, junior co-ed roller derby team, and a speed skate club. This will be the artistic team’s eighth time participating in the parade; with about 25-40 kids expected. Says artistic team head coach and regional and national champion Toby Herrig, “the kids absolutely love participating in the parade…I prepare a special routine and the kids get to show their skills.” The clubs are comprised of skaters of all ages, abilities and commitment levels including skilled competitors who compete at the local, regional and national level. Contact Toby by email at tdhsk8@hotmail.com for more information. This will be the second year participating for the Skagit Spartans youth roller hockey team and the Wreck City Rollers junior derby team. For more information about roller hockey and roller derby please contact Josh Englund by e-mail at hockey@skagitskate.com. Visit www.skagitskate.com for information on all the clubs. RUNS continued from page 9 Over the years, the running routes have changed multiple times. The original runs were four and seven miles long along Pulver Road. Next, the runs changed to out and back on Anacortes Street. Today the runs consist of a USATF certified 10K run that goes out and back along Fairhaven Avenue to Gardner Street. This route has been consistent for more than a decade and has showcased many epic contests with familiar county names like; Jeff Scott, Bill Krieger, Jim Finch, Bob Davis, Brad Adams, Kendal Townsend, Keefer Whan, Clay Wing, Gary Ash, and numerous local high school alumni who test their fitness on this flat and fast course. The popular USATF certified half marathon was added three years ago and runs flat along the scenic Skagit River Dike with the cooperative assistance of Dike District volunteers (John Burt). All half marathon finishers receive medals in recognition of this accomplishment. The familiar two mile out and back route was changed to a 5K event last year with enthusiastic support of the runners. They enjoy a portion of the scenic Skagit River Dike venue while finishing through the fanfare curbed streets of Fairhaven from anxious parade viewers securing curbside parade route seats. Race organizers are thankful for great cooperation from the Dike District in the half marathon event effort, the Chamber/ City Members and the Burlington Parks and Recreation group for their supportive roles in helping showcase the unique city pride Burlington offers. Official race times are recorded and posted on www.berrydairyruns.com. Visit www.berrydairyruns. com/photos_from_course to see pictures of the half marathon course. The 2015 Official Sponsor is Rich and Tami Sakuma who have sponsored the race for the past few years from their market stand “From the Farm” (on Pulver Road), providing end of race berries and support. on’t miss the 2015 Berry Cool Car Show; you will love the festive 50s and 60s tunes and wide array of beautiful classics, muscle cars, and everything in between. The 14th Annual Berry Cool Car Show will be held Sunday, June 21st, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Fairhaven Avenue. Registration begins at 8 a.m. and costs $15. Each year 150-200 car owners take part in the show with participants and spectators coming from all over the region including British Columbia and all across Western Washington State; 177 cars were on display in 2014. Dash plaques are provided to the first 175 cars. The Berry Cool Car Show was actually born out of two car events, started separately by local friends Garnor Bensen, former president of the Skagit Old Car Club and Les Tokarchuk, then president of the North Cascade Street Rod Association (NCSRA). Les started the “Hamburgers and Hot Rods” show at the local Burger King about 17 years ago and Garnor started the car show in the old Canton Restaurant parking lot about 21 years ago. In 2001, the Burlington Chamber of Commerce asked the two to merge shows and the Berry Cool Car Show was created for the Sunday of Berry Dairy Days. The show celebrates the history of the automobile, draws car lovers from all over the region, and creates a special community event within the festival. The 2015 event marks a transition as 30 year NCSRA member and past president, Reed Harlow, takes over the reins. Born and raised in Anacortes, Reed has lived in Skagit County his whole life; he now lives in Burlington. Reed retired from Cascade Natural Gas in October 2014 after 41 years of service. He has been attending the Berry Dairy Days Car Show since its opening year and is friends with both Les and Garnor. Says Reed, “Garnor has been a great mentor…he has helped me

out a lot.” He and his wife Donna are car enthusiasts and own a white and red 1964 Ford Fairlane, two-door hardtop and a 1939 Mercury two-door sedan. 1939 was the first year the Mercury sedan was built. Local merchants on Fairhaven Avenue sponsor the show, staying open during the event and donating funding for the trophies. Since the show’s start and returning for another year as the number one sponsor is Pat Rimmer’s Les Schwab Tire Center, located on Burlington Boulevard. Other returning sponsors are the Train Wreck Bar & Grill, Billy’s Café (formerly the Blueberry Café), Café Burlington and Stowe’s Shoes & Clothing; the latter three being original sponsors. Award sponsors are Skagit Bank, Cedardale Upholstery, JR’s RV Repair, Ken’s Radiator, Skagit Transmission, Budget Towing, Twin City Lanes, Valley Auto Mechanic, All Valley Auto Glass, Specialty Plating, Corvette Alley, Train Wreck Bar & Grill, Larry’s Auto & Truck Parts, Karl’s Paint, Farmer’s Insurance, Avon Body Shop, Fab-Tech Inc. & Trailers, Doyle Guffies Auto & Truck Sales, Scholten’s Equipment, Glow Cleaners, Wallace & Associates Insurance and Seaside Autobody. First, second, and third place trophies are awarded to each class, voted on by all show participants. Show classes are 29 and older, Best 70s and newer, Best Truck, Best 30s, 40s, 50s and 60s, and Best Oddball. Special trophies are awarded by local judges handpicked the day of the show for their love of and knowledge of cars. Special categories are Best Stock 59 and Older, Best Stock 60 and Newer, Best Truck 72 and Older, Best Truck 73 and Newer, Best Muscle Car, Best Modified, Best Paint, Best Interior, Best Engine Compartment, Best Street Rod, Best Corvette, and Best in Show. In all, 39 trophies are awarded. The event is free to peruse but is organized and financially supported by the NCSRA. Raffle tickets purchased at the show, along with prizes donated by local sponsors, also contribute to the show’s success. The money raised pays for two students’ tuition and books at the Skagit Valley College’s Auto Technology

Program. With 50 members, the NCSRA has been active since 1976 and the club aims to keep it going by supporting the next generation of car enthusiasts and mechanics. Americans have long celebrated their love and history of the automobile by attending car shows throughout the country. Whether you’re a true car enthusiast, have an interest in America’s car history, or you’re coming along for Dad, you won’t be disappointed.
