Knut Bell

Saturday, Aug. 11 @ 5 p.m.

Skagit County singer/songwriter Knut Bell is a busy man, having spent a good chunk of July recording his next album in Seattle. He returns to his hometown area with an appearance at the Skagit County Fair on Saturday, Aug. 11. Bell has an affable baritone voice and has teamed up with some of country music’s elite musicians. He calls his music “Honkahillarockabilly,” a tonguetwisting mix of country, honkytonk, folk and rockabilly. Bell and his band will be one of the featured acts on the final night of entertainment at the Fair, sharing the stage with The Magic Of Sterling, The Holmes Shea Band and Brittmania, a tribute to The Beatles.

Other acts you won’t want to miss: The Holmes Shea Band

The band’s originals are rooted in rock with an infusion of funk, R&B, and/or Latin involved. Some tunes lean toward jazz, others toward a dreamy fusion feel. People say the music reminds them of Bonnie Raitt, Santana and even Flora Purim. HSB also gets the dancers hopping with a great selection of Motown/funk covers.

Saturday, Aug. 11 @ 7:45 p.m. Ali Marcus

Ali’s music spans a variety of audiences, from straight-up 60’s folk, to contemporary singer-songwriter, and the burgeoning Americana movement that radiates out from the Pacific Northwest like moonlight on a foggy night.

Wednesday, Aug. 8 @ 4:45 p.m. Marcia Kester Duo with Sandy carter

A savory vocal texture that falls somewhere between Patsy Cline and Bonnie Raitt and on towards the Shania Twain zone. Her arrangements add a modern flavor to classic songs… A taste of rock in the country tunes, and a dash of country in the rock.

Friday, Aug. 10 @ 12:45 p.m.

Fiddle Sticks, Banjos and Fair Time! From the Director’s Chair

Brian Adams Skagit County Parks and Recreation and the Skagit County Fair

G

rab your fiddle stick and fire up the banjos! On Aug. 8 at 10 a.m., we’ll swing open the gates and let the first of the fervent 2012 Fair-goers in. Although it will be a fresh event with new encounters for the attendees, it will only build on a long history of entertainment at the Skagit County Fairgrounds. The first Fair was established in 1898, when N.J. Moldstad pulled a couple of fellow Mount Vernon businessmen aside and decided to form the first Fair association. The first Fair was a four-day event in October, at a time when the entire size of Skagit County had a population of less than 14,000 people. The Fair has been on rocky grounds on many occasions since, especially during the goskagit.com

Great Depression and World War II, when several Fairs were cancelled. Uncertain times pushed our current era of Fairs to the brink as well, but with the determination of staff and strong community support, we have forged forward to put this historical event on firm footing. I am sure Mr. Moldstad would be pleased to know his legacy lives on and the Fair is still a Skagit County centerpiece. A special “thank you” to all the volunteers and sponsors that moved this Fair machine forward: We couldn’t do it without you. When I was growing up in Skagit County, I didn’t miss too many fairs. For me, it marked the beginning of the end. Summer would soon be over, at least in the way I recognized summer. School was just around the corner, and soon we would all be opening schoolbooks and closing another summer chapter. The smell of corn dogs and elephant ears brings me back home to the nagging and desperate sense of the rapidly vanishing summer. The social setting of school was no replacement for the freedom of strapping on the sandals

and pulling up the shorts each morning, before heading out to conquer the forests of Fidalgo Island or the creek beds of Skagit County. The 2012 Skagit County Fair is themed “Hometown Fun with a Homegrown Feel.” Just as the theme alludes, the 2012 Fair will showcase local bands, local foods, local farms, local dance troupes, local vendors and local everything else. Why wouldn’t it? The Skagit County Fair is part of our identity because it identifies with what makes Skagit County great. Our farms are the foundation of our history and our farms remain the foundation of what you will see at your Fair. Walk past the barns and stop at the stage; Fanny Alger may be singing about local landmarks such as Spieden Island or Queen’s Bluegrass may be singing about the mighty Skagit River. Wherever you may roam at the Fair, you will see Skagit County’s finest. So, grab your fiddle stick, fire up the banjo and come join us at the Skagit County Fair!

e would like to personally thank this year’s Fair sponsors for their support of the Skagit County Fairgrounds and the 2012 Skagit County Fair. Local businesses have been steadfast in supporting the Fair over the years, building a partnership with Skagit County that we are very proud of. Along with our sponsors, we welcome all of you to join us in this year’s celebration, themed “Hometown Fun with a Homegrown Feel,” which consists of four full days of wholesome fun, starting on Wednesday, Aug. 8, and running until Aug. 11. The Fair is an event rich with tradition, having been a part of Skagit County since the first local Fair in 1898. Local foods and homegrown entertainment will make this year’s Fair an event you won’t want to miss and most importantly, it is an event that can be enjoyed by the entire family. We appreciate this support in sustaining the agricultural traditions that are so deeply rooted in our great county. 4-HanFFA at the fair &

4-H doesn’t just mean farm animals anymore. At this year’s Skagit County Fair, about 350 children will present projects about underwater robotics, arts and crafts, performing arts — and of course, animals. William Freitas, a 4-H educator, said the program is a great way for students to get involved in their communities and work on interpersonal skills. And the fair is a great way for them to showcase what they’ve learned. “The kids get to work on projects and learn,” Freitas said. “But they also need { 14 }

to learn about leadership, citizenship, and working together.” Freitas said this year’s 4-H must-see events are the round robins. The champions from each animal division join each other in the arena and learn about each other’s animals. The judges then judge the contestants about all of the different animals, and how well they’ve taught each other. “It’s fun because it’s a contest that encourages the kids to work together and teach each other,” Freitas said.

2012 | Skagit County Fair Official Program

This year’s fair will have two round-robin events: one on Thursday evening (Aug. 9) for large animals like cows and horses, and one on Saturday evening (Aug. 11) for small animals like dogs and rabbits. While the fair is a favorite event, Freitas explained it’s just a small piece of what the 500 Skagit County 4-H members do. High school students attend a workshop in Olympia each year so they can learn about the government, members learn how to do public presentations every spring, different clubs and goskagit.com

groups go on field trips throughout the year and members are given the opportunity to visit Camp Cornet at Deception Pass. The group also puts a special emphasis on community service. “They all learn how to be a part of the community,” Freitas said. The National FFA Organization offers this motto to members: “Learning to do, doing to learn, earning to live, living to serve.” Founded in 1928, the FFA brought together students, teachers and agribusiness interests to solidify support for agricultural education. In Kansas City’s Baltimore Hotel, 33 young farm boys charted the course for the organization, which now boosts almost half a million members in more than 7,000 chapters nationwide. Today, the National FFA Organization remains committed to the individual student, providing a path to achievement in premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education. Now the organization is expanding the country’s view of “traditional” agriculture and finding new ways to infuse agriculture into the classroom. More than 7,000 chapters are managed on a local, state and national level. Each goskagit.com

chapter’s program of activities is designed with the needs of the student in mind. Activities vary greatly from school to school, but are based in a well-integrated curriculum. The agricultural science education program is built on the three core areas of classroom/laboratory instruction, supervised agricultural experience

programs and FFA student organization activities and opportunities. The organization holds a federal charter, and two of the top three FFA executives are employed by the U.S. Department of Education. The organization covers more than 300 careers in the food, fiber and natural resources industry.

umerous talented young musicians will take the stage Thursday afternoon, Aug. 9, at the Skagit County Fair in the second annual Youth Band Showdown. Sponsored by Hugo Helmer Music of Burlington, the intent of these performances is to showcase young up-andcoming talent. Beginning at 1:45 p.m., local school-age musicians Joey Hendricks from Anacortes, Spencer Ekle from Burlington and the band Skipping Victor from SedroWoolley are scheduled to perform. Following the youth band performances will be cheerleading performances from local schools including Mount Vernon, Sedro-Woolley, Burlington, Concrete and Darrington. This idea stemmed from Skagit County Parks Board member Kevin Loy, who saw the benefit of getting more school-age groups involved at the Fair. This will be happening this year and, hopefully, for years to come. The big showdown will occur at the conclusion of the performances, when each team will nominate a cheerleader to participate in a pie-eating contest! Come check out all of the action, Thursday afternoon, Aug. 9, at the Fair!

Gaither said he thinks that this year’s car show will be a crowd pleaser. “I’m always looking for new and exciting things to bring to the fair,” Gaither said. The event will take place Aug. 11 from 4:30 to 9 p.m. Awards will be presented at 8:30 p.m. on the main stage. While both old and new cars are welcome at Show and Shine, Gaither predicts there will be more vintage and antique cars at this year’s event. “You can expect cars of all different makes and models, especially antique ones,” he said. Gaither said local car enthusiasts seem excited for this year’s event. He expects local car clubs like JJ’s Cruisers of Sedro-Woolley, Twin City Idlers of Stanwood, Majestic Glass Corvette Club and other car clubs with members from all over Western Washington. “We’ve had a lot of positive responses from local car groups and individuals,” Gaither said.

DO YOU THINK THE OSCARS ARE GROUCHY PUPPETS THAT LIVE IN TRASH CANS?

“Changeling” Redfoot Theatre founder Matt Riggins plans to sprinkle the Skagit County Fair with magic this summer.

T

he Mount Vernon organization was founded only six months ago by Riggins and co-founder Sarah Mickelson, and this is their first time preforming at the fair. Redfoot Theatre is performing a play entitled “Changeling,” which Riggins and Mickelson wrote based on Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” Riggins and Mickelson’s interpretation of the story focuses on Shakespeare’s changeling boy character, and in their version he goes on a journey searching for a magic flower. Riggins and Mickelson also incorporated several fairy tales from different cultures into their play, including “The Three Billy Goats Gruff,” which originated in Norway, and “The Nightingale,” a Chinese story. “We’re making it a multicultural fairy event,” Riggins said. Riggins said Redfoot Theatre follows a somewhat unorthodox model. He goskagit.com

explained that membership is flexible – many people participate in some shows and not others. He said the company has 40 people who have participated in different shows. Riggins added the Redfoot Theatre approach to casting plays is unique in that people don’t need to audition or have experience; anyone can participate. “We decided to create this theatre company based on the idea that everyone’s an expert actor already,” Riggins said. He compared acting to yoga. He thinks that like yoga, acting should improve all aspects of a person’s life, from concentration at work to general happiness. “We ask ourselves: How can we use acting to better people’s lives?” Riggins said. Mickelson and Riggins

attended college together at Western Washington University, and both have experience performing at the Skagit River Shakespeare Festival. Riggins has been doing theatre seriously for the past six years. Riggins lived in Seattle, but came up to Skagit County to direct a production of “Othello.” While here, he fell in love with the area’s atmosphere and people’s love of the arts. “There’s a kinda gold vein of talent, and a desire and passion for the arts here,” Riggins said. “So I decided to stay.” Redfoot will be featured on the main stage Wednesday, August 8th from 11:25 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. and will have daily performances of “Changeling” on the Sherman Anderson Field Stage as well: Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. and Thursday through Saturday at 2:00 p.m.

Anacortes’ own Vela Luka Croatian Dance Ensemble and Ruze Dalmatinke, a Croatian band, will perform at the Skagit County Fair for the first time since the 1980’s. Vela Luka founding member Alma Plancich said she’s excited to return to the fair so the group can showcase its talents to its home community. “We’ve done the Skagit County Fair before, but it’s been a long time,” Plancich said. The groups were created in Anacortes in 1975 as a way for Plancich to remind her family members of their Croatian heritage. Plancich moved to { 22 }

Anacortes with her parents and siblings in 1949. She said there is a relatively large Croation community in the area, and members enjoy having a connection to the Croatian culture. “I find that if you don’t do something with your culture, it disappears in about a generation,” Plancich said. Vela Luka and Ruze Dalmatinke have included several members of Plancich’s family — four generations from her parents to her grandchildren. The groups also include members of the Croatian community in Skagit County and beyond. In total, Vela Luka and Ruze Dalmatinke have about 40 members: 20 or more adults and children dance in Vela Luka, and 10 or more play or sing in Ruze Dalmatinke. The group is too big for everyone to perform at

the Skagit County Fair, so Plancich will bring a select few performers. Plancich’s favorite part of Vela Luka and Ruze Dalmatinke is that they bring her family together and make sure members of the Croatian community stay in contact. Regular practices and performances ensure the groups are a tight-knit community. “The last performance we did was Folk Life, and I haven’t seen a lot of the people since then,” Plancich said. The groups have had success nationwide, and performed in July in Washington, D.C., at the Library of Congress. But Plancich said Vela Luka and Ruze Dalmatinke are still primarily local groups. “It’s definitely a Skagit County home-grown organization,” Plancich said. goskagit.com
