From the Director’s Chair Brian Adams, Director

Skagit County Parks, Recreation, and Fair 2015: The Encore to a Million Dollar Mural Last year’s Fair goers stood witness to an illustrious Skagit County discovery, leaving attendees with a story they can all boast about for years to come. Just before the 2014 Skagit Fair, a large thick painted canvas tarp was unexpectedly dumped at our feet. To a legendary Skagit Valley farming family, the infamous mural lived 75 years of indifference, at least as a treasured art piece. Although not appreciated for its aesthetic value, the long thick canvas mural had an illustrious purpose for the family and as such, was long cherished for its utilitarian purpose around the farm. Over the

course of several decades it was exploited for a variety of domestic needs – covering firewood, keeping the rain of the tents during hunting trips, and as a throw rug in the moist farmhouse basement. When not in use, the mural was placed in a large crate where it spent several generations being passed from family barn to family barn, a waning tool for a new era where plastic tarps proved themselves to be much lighter and perhaps just as durable. Tony Breckinridge grew tired of the large cumbersome mural taking up space in his basement and after a failing effort to cram it back in its crate by stomping up and down on it, he pulled it from the box and headed off towards the garbage dumpster on the far end of the pasture, dragging the 50-pound mural “Linus style” before abandoning his mission 20 yards short of what surely would have led to its demise—slowly melting into a landfill in a distant land. After a couple of months in the pasture, Tony’s neck showed improvement and after successfully loading it onto his flatbed truck, he decided to deliver it to us, thus granting the

mural with an overdue afterlife. After the mural was lifted to the stage at the County Fair, it was soon discovered to have been painted in 1941 by William Cumming, a young and aspiring artist who hung out with “the mystic four,” a group of bohemian Northwest artists who set down roots on South Fidalgo Island, La Conner, and other Skagit County perimeter rest stops. Their work and style became recognized as the Northwest School of Art and their work has become central to our artistic identity. Its value has been assessed at a half a million dollars. Soooo, come August 12-15, come see what we have in store for an encore in 2015! Grab some fair grub and count your way through the barns. Are there truly 60 swine? Stop by to visit Bubba, a recordbreaking sized steer—now that’s a whole lotta bull! Stop by to see our William Cumming replica mural on the SICBA Main Stage. As this year’s theme for the 2015 Fair proclaims: it’s the summer of sixty-swine—and without a doubt, THE BEST DAYS OF OUR LIVES!

Come find the replica of the mural painted by the late William Cumming on display at the Fair. Don’t miss out on your chance to see a piece of Skagit Valley history! 6

4-h & FFa at the Fair

The Skagit County Fair has a long and proud history of partnering with local 4-H and FFA club members who come to share and showcase their skills and talents. Many kids participate in both programs; the FFA in school and the 4-H all year long. The clubs share common themes: hands-on learning, community spirit, sciences, arts, and agriculture. Don’t miss the Skagit Junior Livestock Show in the pavilion on Friday, August 14th, at 7 p.m.; market animals raised by FFA students and 4-H club members will be for sale by auction. Participants must be in grades three to twelve and from Skagit or Snohomish counties. The kids show the market animal that they raised through their project. The projects are local, well cared for and managed by the students. Students are taught to treat and care for their animals with a high ethical standard of care. The livestock includes steers, lambs, hogs, meat goats and meat rabbits; blue ribbon animals fetch more money.

Students are judged on Showmanship also known as Fitting and Showing, which is a 4-H requirement for any animal project. The exhibitor is judged on how well he or she exhibits the animal to its best advantage, with additional scoring for the grooming and presentation of both animal and handler. A Round Robin is a crowd favorite where a showman from each division shows large and small animals from other divisions. Speed Events in the horse arena include Poles, Key, International Flags, Figure 8, and Barrels. Equitation classes are judged on the rider’s position and ability to ride correctly with effective communication aids. FFa The National FFA’s (originally the Future Farmers of America) motto is “learning to do, doing to learn, earning to live, living to serve.” The organization was founded in 1928 by 33 farm boys for the purpose of bringing together students, teachers, and agribusiness interests through agricultural education and hands on projects. FFA now has almost 500,000 members in 7,000 chapters nationwide with millions of alumni. The organization teaches classes in more than 300 careers in the food, fiber and natural resources 10

Skagit County Fair Official Program

industry including animal science, horticulture, floral design, AG mechanics, and meal art. Apart from personal growth, these programs provide students the opportunity to travel, discover careers in agriculture, and develop premier leadership skills. FFA Global Programs give students and teachers the opportunity to explore the different agricultural practices and cultures in countries around the world. Students can join FFA through a school club while they are enrolled in an agricultural class. CoMe and See the FFa CLuB MeMBer BoothS and LiVeStoCK: dairy cattle, Beef cattle, Swine, Sheep, goats, Poultry, rabbits, dairy cow and livestock judging, agriculture mechanics and technology, horticulture, educational displays 4-h youth PrograM The 4-H youth program was started at the beginning of the 20th century to ensure the future of rural youth. It consists of a community of more than six million members from ages nine through nineteen and 60 million alumni from across America. The clubs emphasize learning, leadership/life skills, healthy living, citizenship and science through classes, handson projects, and community service. Students can choose from a variety of projects in the areas of technology, human sciences, large and small animals, science and engineering, natural resources, and citizenship and leadership. Beyond the excitement of learning something new through a project, youth have the opportunity to participate in leadership conferences, travel the world, become involved in their community through service, and meet new friends in a safe and comfortable setting. In Skagit County, 450 youth are organized into 35 clubs and mentored by 140 volunteers. Children join 4-H by choosing a 4-H club; visiting with leaders and members at the fair is a great way to find a good fit for an individual’s interests. 4-H members can compete with their projects in contests at the local, state, regional, or national levels and also attend conferences and events. 4-H has four Essential Elements: Belonging, Generosity, Mastery, and August 12-15, 2015 | goskagit.com

Independence. These topics give youth a safe place to “Learn as they Do,” generate positive youth/adult partnerships, and feel a part of a bigger community. The 4-H motto is “Making the Best Better.” You will see these values reflected in the children when you take time to visit and talk with 4-H members at the fair. Says Dorothy Elsner, WSU Extension Skagit County 4-H Program Coordinator: “4-H thrives in Skagit County due to incredible support from the Skagit County community. The generosity of our community enables Skagit County 4-H to continue our mission in raising responsible, thoughtful and generous leaders for our future.” Dorothy participated in 4-H Club in her youth and says that “…it was truly what motivated me to go to college and start a life of 4-H activity. My daughters were Skagit County 4-H members as well and I was a volunteer.”

4-H Exhibits and Contests The 4-H building is full of interesting still-life exhibits and live demonstrations. For example, dog projects show in agility through an obstacle course; handlers work with dogs both on and off leash. Don’t miss it! Mobile Music’s owner, John Manso, continues as a proud sponsor of the cheer exhibition. He loves to be involved in community events and says “We’ve always sponsored the cheerleaders. Many of our employees have had kids in high school through the years.” Skagit County Parks and Recreation board member, Kevin Loy, originally came up with the idea for “Cheer at the Fair,” He wanted to showcase the cheerleaders’ amazing athletic abilities, while helping them build confidence and have a great time. “This is a chance for the girls to be center stage instead of cheering on sports teams,” he said. Each squad will perform a two to three minute prepared dance and cheer routine, left up to each coach’s discretion. Says Kevin, “you won’t be disappointed…the small school teams are just as good as the big schools.” Says Mount Vernon High School coach Khalie Whitman, “The girls love participating in the fair because it is a chance to show their skills to a different crowd of people and it is an all around fun day hanging out with cheerleaders from other schools… I love Cheer at the Fair because it gives our community the chance to see our teams perform both individually and together and allows the girls to have fun and goskagit.com | August 12-15, 2015

Apart from practicing and performing routines, the squads are active members of their communities; volunteering, participating in and raising money for a variety of events and causes. Community service is central to the fabric of these cheer teams and is their largest focus beyond practice and cheering at games. Says Whitman, “…to the girls being a cheerleader ultimately means serving as a role model for not only their school but their community. My cheerleaders are held to very high expectations as they know being a cheerleader is a privilege, not a right. They work extremely hard to uphold that role and promote school spirit and pride at MVHS and throughout Mount Vernon.” The fair exhibition’s sister event is the inter-school Skagit Cheer Exhibition. This event is a great way for the cheer teams to show their competitive side and the skills they have worked on all year. The first competition was held in March 2013 at Burlington-Edison High School, the 2014 event was held in Sedro-Woolley, the 2015 event was held in Mount Vernon, and the 2016 event will either go back to Burlington-Edison or to new-comer Anacortes. Schools are rotated to give everyone a chance to host. The competition hands out quite a few awards including spirit, stunting, performance, jumps, and mascot skits. Organizers are always trying to add more schools and participants to both “Cheer at the Fair” and the inter-school competition, as these events provide an opportunity to highlight the hard work of local cheer teams. Don’t miss this opportunity to support your Skagit cheerleaders and enjoy a great show!

The Best Days of Our Lives (The Summer of Sixty-Swine)

Step back into the summer of sixty-swine at this year’s Skagit County Fair. Setting the mood will be performances on Saturday, August 15th, by Run to You (Bryan Adams Tribute) at 7:15 p.m. and That’s What She Said (80s and Beyond) at 8:15 p.m. (the same band under different names). The band That’s What She Said (TWSS for short), was formed in Portland, Oregon in 2010 out of a desire to cover and perform acoustic rock music. To their surprise and delight, they have found their audience. Born out of a love of good, solid music from the 60s to today and priding themselves on their fairly juvenile sense of humor, TWSS has played steadily at venues in and around Portland and at private events, bringing good tunes and good times to appreciative crowds. The band is made up of members Brian Klotz, Scott Thomas, and Steve Herron. They have been playing since Scott joined Brian in 2010, although it remained an acoustic duo for several years until their friend Steve offered to add some bass to the mix. Says Brian, “We are excited to join the fair and to debut our Bryan Adams cover songs as “Run to You.” The story of how that came to be is rather unusual. We were playing a show in Vancouver, Washington, as That’s What She Said and did a Bryan Adams cover during our set…following the show, Scott was approached by the Skagit County Parks, Recreation and Fair director Brian Adams who asked whether we could do a whole

set of Bryan Adams, to which he answered, “I don’t see why not”…I had to do some looking in order to find a band name that was not already in use elsewhere and settled on “Run to You” after the Brian Adams song released in 1984.” Says Brian, “…this offer to join the Skagit County Fair is a novel one and one that we eagerly anticipate…The thing to know about our band, as the name implies, is that we don’t take ourselves seriously, and music is about connecting with people in a unique way that celebrates being alive and being swept up in a moment that few things outside of music can do so effectively. (That’s what she said).” That’s What She Said has a Facebook presence at https://www.facebook.com/twsspdx. They can be found playing in and around the Portland area throughout the year so don’t miss this opportunity to see them live at the 2015 Skagit County Fair!
