Northwest sell handcrafted art in every form. Loyal customers can find returning favorites, and each year new artists fill at least 20 percent of the booths. Arts at the Port features a Juried Exhibition and John L. Scott Focus Gallery showcases the work of 35 regional fine artists at the Port warehouse at the north end of the Festival. This unique exhibition space provides the audience views of the Guemes Channel and the sound of changing tides far removed from an urban gallery setting. A local youth art exhibit rounds out Arts at the Port. Festival Music offers a wide range of talent and entertainment on four venues dispersed throughout the Festival. World music, jazz and blues, folk, rock, easy listening, American Roots and interactive entertainment for kids continues nonstop during the Festival and into the evenings. “Experience Art” on Saturday and Sunday features a variety of artists demonstrating woodworking, painting, sculpture, print making, theater and more. Island Eatery Food Court offers regional and international foods. The Festival Beer Garden is the place to enjoy micro-brews and Northwest wine. Youth Activities on 7th Street allows kids a place of their own to create, experience and learn. Come for a day or a weekend. Experience Anacortes hospitality as you help celebrate the arts! Visit the Festival Web site www.AnacortesArtsFestival.com for detailed information about Festival events and happenings.

The Board approved $25,000 in community grants for the 2010 giving cycle funding public art, cultural performances, arts education for students and families and a youth art exhibition. The following received grants:
Festival Poster Image
Tom Rierden of Orcas Island created the image for the 2010 Festival poster. A native of Nebraska, Rierden started as a designer working in stained glass, later turning to painting while working as an assistant to William Cummings. Typically, his colorful compositions show people engaged in activities, with their features obscured — in this case the image includes both figures and brightly colored salmon.

Concerts at the Port Series
Jr. Cadillac After early beginnings performing in Pioneer Square, Jr. Cadillac has been performing for 40 years. Specializing in classic rock and roll, over the years the group has opened for big-name bands including The Beach Boys, Chuck Berry, Bo Didley and The Kinks. This unique concert will be a rare opportunity to dance the night away in the Port warehouse.
Chance McKinney & CrossWire
Brandon Vance & Friends
Country music performer Chance McKinney was the 2009 winner of the CMT’s Music City Madness competition, earning a trip to Nashville, a recording session and a special meeting with superstar Reba McEntire earlier this year. He and his group CrossWire will be touring this summer with Dwight Yoakam, Creedance Clearwater, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Blake Shelton. His smooth vocals, 6-foot-6 frame and unique country sound keep the audience riveted.
Twice before the age of 17 Vance received top honors from the National Scottish Fiddling Championships, making him the youngest recipient ever. He has since perfected his craft by studying, teaching and performing throughout the world. His music ranges from traditional fiddle to classic violin, with jazz and folk mixed in. This performance with friends is a rare opportunity to experience the extraordinary talent of this home-grown musician.
Crumac
Rouge
Crumac evolved from the premiere Seattle Irish band The Suffering Gaels. The three members of the band perform using the fiddle, guitar, Uilleann pipes, whistle and strong vocals. True to its tradition, Irish music includes ballads, drinking songs, laments, reels and jigs. Crumac has delighted audiences coast to coast as well as in Alaska and Japan.
Rouge celebrates its 10th year bringing French Cabaret to life for modern audiences. Cabaret is a form of musical entertainment featuring song, comedy, dance and theatre. Performing in French, vocalist Janet Rayor has a lively and entertaining stage presence, accompanied by world-class musicians/ composers.
Maria Muldaur & Her red Hot Bluesiana Band
Maria Muldaur’s successful career has been strongly influenced by American roots music, including Southern blues, folk, “Jug” and Appalachian music. In her early days, she was part of the Woodstock community that included artists like Bob Dylan and Janice Joplin. In addition to collaborating with a who’s who of prominent American musicians, her first solo album went platinum. Her hit “Midnight at the Oasis” remains a staple song in multi format radio. With 13 albums to her credit, Muldaur remains true to her roots and a delight to audiences.

Arts at the Port Port of Anacortes Warehouse Transit Shed Event Center — 1st & Commercial – 10-5 Aug. 2-Aug. 5 Festival Hours 10-6 Friday and Saturday & 10–5 Sunday
of Anacortes on the waterfront, carries on the tradition of showcasing and selling Northwest fine art. This unique marine setting in the Port warehouse combines a view of the water and the sound of ebbing and flowing tides with artwork from some of the region’s premier artists. Arts at the Port consists of three distinct exhibits – “NEXT” Juried Open Exhibition, John L. Scott Focus Gallery and Youth Art Exhibit, coordinated by Anacortes Community & Youth Arts.
Todd Horton
Arts at the Port, located at the north end
The Festival offers up to $10,500 in award money to artists participating in the Arts at the Port. This includes $2,500 for both 2D and 3D Awards, $4,000 for the Anacortes Collects Public Art Purchase Award, and two sponsored awards — the Peoples Bank Peoples Choice Award chosen by Festival attendees and the T Bailey Corporate Award.
Lori Vonderhorst
Arts at the Port kicks off with the Community Opening Event on Friday, July 30 from 5:30–8 p.m. with a $15 ticket price at the door. This is the first opportunity to view and purchase artwork from the Arts at the Port Exhibition. The event includes appetizers from Bellissima, Gere-A-Deli and Café Adrift, chocolates and a no-host wine bar. The evening will also honor mural artist Bill Mitchell, our 2010 Anacortes Patron of the Arts.

Craig Dunstan-McGrail | Bellingham Photography Dunston-McGrail’s abstract photos explore the endless potential of painting with light using a camera, a computer and ink on paper.
Karen Hackenberg | Port Townsend Painting Surveying the boundary between man and living nature, Hackenberg’s series of gouache paintings present an ironic taxonomy of postconsumer creatures of the sea, pushing the boundary between man and living nature. Jeffrey Hanks | Lopez Island Ceramics Hanks’ wheel-thrown ceramic vessels express the range from the pure function of the classic amphora form to its highly stylized sculptural shape.
Jim Farrand
Jim Farrand | Shoreline Painting Farrand employs techniques such as pouring, spraying and glazing to create intense color saturation in his paintings, challenging the viewer to rethink the medium of watercolor. Robert E. Gigliotti | Bellingham Sculpture Gigliotti approaches sculpture from two different perspectives — to make each piece interesting on a purely visual level and to use symbolism to challenge the viewer’s paradigms about relationships with each other, the environment and the universe. Kathryn Glowen | Arlington Mixed Media Glowen quite literally incorporates the past into her work, creating a visual journey of memory, place and time. Her Festival entry uses repurposed silk ties and acrylic on canvas.

Bill Mitchell
T
he Anacortes Arts Festival is pleased to honor artist Bill Mitchell as the 2010 Anacortes Patron of the Arts. One need only drive into Anacortes to see the
artistic influence of Bill Mitchell in the community. In 1984, Bill installed the first of his murals depicting historical people and events significant to Anacortes. As of May 1, the number stands at 125. A map locating the murals is available at the Chamber Visitor’s Center. A native to Anacortes, Bill started out as an underground cartoonist and later wrote a history column for the Anacortes American. Today he spends his time painting into the wee hours and working with a crew of four on his many projects. He plans to wrap up the Anacortes Mural Project early in 2011. Despite the challenge of being confined to a wheelchair (and familiar motorized cart), Bill considers himself “a lucky guy.” There is no argument that his grit, tenacity and talent have made a significant impact on the arts in Anacortes.
