We want to thank United General Hospital for presenting the festival. Each year, the Burlington Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with the City of Burlington, is proud to welcome the community to this fantastic event. Berry Dairy Days began 75 years ago when the Burlington Fire Department started a festival to honor the agricultural and dairy industries of Skagit Valley. As the years have gone by, more activities and events have been added, while organizers have been careful to
preserve the favorite events of years past. This year will be no exception! Family-friendly, fun events will keep you and your family entertained throughout this four-day festival. Strawberry shortcake will be available in many locations around town, including Fairhaven Avenue in front of the Canton restaurant and at the Festival in the Park at Maiben Park. In addition, shortcake can be found at the fireworks show on Friday night (June 14) at Skagit River Park and the Skagit Speedway schedule of events included in this Dirt Cup. BERRY DAIRY DAYS HISTORY
I
t started in 1937 with a giant strawberry shortcake. When volunteer firefighters needed some money for new equipment, they started the Strawberry Festival. They figured the “world’s largest shortcake” propped up on sawhorses in the middle of Fairhaven Avenue would draw the community in. It was baked by the Skagit Bakery and topped with fresh strawberries and Darigold whipped cream. In addition to feeding 5,000 people for free, the week-long festival featured a parade, a carnival and a gambling hall at the fire house, now the Eagles building. The giant shortcake is now replaced with single servings and the gambling hall no longer exists, but in its 75th year, Burlington’s oldest tradition lives on in Berry Dairy Days. As the crowds and fire calls grew, the firefighters turned the event over to the Burlington Chamber of Commerce in 1965. The name was later changed to Berry Dairy Days to recognize the dairy farmers as well as the berry farmers in the area. Local berry production in the area is past its peak, which stretched from the 1950s to 1970s, having taken a hit from berry farming
in California. Local dairies have fallen by the wayside as well. However, Berry Dairy Days endures as a celebration of Burlington’s farming heritage. Today, festivalgoers can enjoy a classic car show, Kiwanis salmon barbecue and live music. Proceeds from the strawberry shortcake go to the Chamber of Commerce and the BurlingtonEdison High School cheerleaders.

Run
he coordinators of Berry Dairy Days aren’t about to tamper with a classic formula. This year’s runs are going to offer the same kind of courses that draw upward of 500 runners from Skagit County and beyond every year, whether the runners are novices or seasoned veterans. “There are no real changes this year. Everything has a nice, flat, fast course,” co-coordinator Kevin Ryan said. This year’s races will be held Saturday, June 16, and will include a certified half-marathon (8:30 a.m. start), a 2-mile fun run (9 a.m. start) and a certified 10-kilometer run (9 a.m. start). Ryan said the half-marathon is an especially scenic route. “The half-marathon is flat, and what’s unique is that it runs across the Skagit dike, which is not often open. It’s very scenic, very flat,” he said. The race will begin at 504 East Fairhaven at the corner of Oak Street and Fairhaven. Runners are reminded not to park on Fairhaven or they will be blocked in by the parade, which follows that route. Runners may pre-register at www.active.com or in person at Skagit Running in Mount Vernon or Fairhaven Runners or Klicks Running in Bellingham. Registration forms may also be printed out at www.berrydairyruns. com and sent in.

GRAND PARADE
utting on a parade as part of a city’s community festival can be a tricky proposition, particularly in Washington state. Even in early summer months, the weather can be unpredictable and potentially volatile. Participants and spectators alike can end up at the mercy of the elements: rain, wind, following horses in the parade running order ... But when the weather cooperates, floats have been built, musical entries are tuned up and cars and trucks are gassed up, the result can be magical. The 2012 Berry Dairy Days Fred Meyer Grand Parade will be held at 11 a.m Saturday, June 16, on Fairhaven Avenue in downtown Burlington. Post-race awards and announcements are scheduled for 1 p.m. at Maiben Park. The parade usually features about 80 entries, but entrants are encouraged to sign up early and
avoid the rush in the final days leading up to the four-day festival, which runs June 14-17. The viewing audience can number in the thousands, particularly if conditions are ideal. Expect to see marching bands, drill and dance teams, 4-H clubs, and representatives from numerous local businesses,

Berry Cool Car Show
W
hether it’s the alluring gleam of a candy apple red paint job, the deep, assertive grunt of a built V-8, or simply the smile on a proud owner’s face that brings throngs of onlookers to downtown Burlington,
the Berry Cool Car Show is a major attraction during Berry Dairy Days. The event will mark its 11th year this Father’s Day, June 17, when more than 200 classics, muscle cars and hot rods are
expected to line up on Fairhaven Avenue. It’s the perfect excuse to get dad off the couch on his special day, the perfect meeting ground for car lovers of all kinds, and to top it off, like whipped cream on a strawberry shortcake — or a chrome supercharger air intake — it’s for a good cause. While free for the public, the North Cascades Street Rod Association (NCSRA), which organized the show this year, will donate around $3,000 in entry fees and local sponsor contributions to scholarship funds at Skagit Community College’s Auto Technology Program. “The money we make, we’re trying to put back into the interest

of cars,” said Steve Doran, a 74-year-old club member who still wrenches on his 1931 Nash hot rod. The first gathering of cool old cars during Berry Dairy Days was not a static event, but featured around 30 classics driving in the Grand Parade. Since then the Berry Cool Car Show has become its own entity, organized by the Skagit Old Car Club originally, while the torch eventually passed to the NCSRA. Boyd Veer, president of the NCSRA, said that while Skagit Valley is home to an unusually high number of classic cars, clubs and individuals come to the event from British Columbia, Camano

Then the kids can enjoy the petting farm, pony rides and plenty of games. he Burlington Kiwanis Club has been throwing slabs of salmon on the barbecue for years as part of the Berry Dairy Days festival. The tradition continues as the 63rd Fred Stump Memorial Barbecue runs from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. June 15 at Skagit River Park. The barbecue continues June 16 from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Maiben Park. While the decades have passed, the menu has remained relatively unchanged, boasting char-broiled salmon, baked potato, coleslaw, bread, dessert and a beverage. The barbecue is the club’s

Strawberry Shortcake

heerleaders will again this year serve up the Berry Dairy Days’ signature dish: strawberry shortcake. The squad, from BurlingtonEdison High School, has done the task for many years as a way to raise money for cheer clinics and their custom-made uniforms, said Colleen Bombatch, B-E cheer’s booster club president. This is the 75th anniversary of the summer festival. Cakes will be sold at various locations throughout Burlington for just $3 each. “They go to cheer camps to learn leadership and stunting,” Bombatch said. Working in the booths, she said, teaches the cheerleaders about community service. Behind the scenes, the Burlington Chamber of Commerce will take over procuring the berries, cakes and whipped cream so the cheerleaders can do what they do best: push shortcakes. Kelly Eagleburger, office director of the chamber,
said they expect to sell about 2,500 cakes this year, about the same as last year. The chamber plans to buy about 40 four-gallon buckets of strawberries from the local Sakuma Brothers farm. Cheerleaders will receive 20 percent of the proceeds after expenses are taken into account, Eagleburger said.
