President’s Letter T
his year’s 2015 Loggerodeo event marks my 10th year as President. I have so many memories of Loggerodeo…where do I start? My family has been involved in Loggerodeo as long as I can remember. One of my memories is of The Beta Burger stand that my Dad built in 1974, which started out as Skagina Junior Womens Club. I was also involved in the Queen contest. There are some names of royalty I remember, but then you would know how old they really are! A big thank you goes to Mrs. Schulze for saving the Queen’s official robe all those years ago! I spent my first five years trying to track it down then one day I got a call from her daughter Tina, (who was royalty) that she had it in her closet....so thankful. The “Log Show” as it was called back then, showcased world class competition from all over the world. I have memories of building many floats, carousels, cakes, riverboats, timber scenes... I was helping Dad assemble a float in the staging area one year and was asked by Hap Kemp if I wanted to drive one of his cars in the parade because someone didn’t show up. Did I?! Heck yes! I was 13 years old and I drove one of Hap’s cars in the parade every year after that until he retired. Then, of course, there were the fireworks; we could sit on our 4

roof, at our house on top of Dukes Hill, and see them from Cascade Middle School. I would like to thank my parents for all the wonderful childhood memories associated with Loggerodeo: I think that’s why I am so passionate about the festival today, I am dedicated to making those same memories for everyone else who happens to be in Sedro-Woolley over the 4th of July. Thank you to the best Board of Directors ever: without those folks and their many volunteer hours, 12 months of the year, none of this would be possible. Thanks to our many sponsors, volunteers and event participants; I hope we can continue to keep creating an event we can all be proud of. Your 2015 President, Jeanne McLennan

Sedro-Woolley Museum T
he Sedro-Woolley Museum has been welcoming visitors from all over the world for the last 22 years. From the start, the museum has enjoyed broad community support with most display items donated by members of the community and an all-volunteer staff. Carolyn Freeman has been involved with the museum since its inception 24 years ago. She served as the president once before for four years and resumed the role again a 11 ago. Carolyn speaks passionately about the museum, saying that her work there has been a “very rewarding experience… and loves that the museum is up close and personal with almost everything out for display.” The Sedro-Woolley Museum celebrates its frontier history, boasting several set exhibits including a re-creation of a frontier town with a barn and a main street with post office, jail, newspaper office, and dental office. There are displays with old machines and equipment, a tribute to community military members, and pictures of the infamous bank robbery of 1914. The museum’s library houses Sedro-Woolley High 7
School yearbooks and local history books. The gift shop sells books from local authors, local artwork on consignment, plus dolls, toys, and books donated by community members. There are good deals to be found such as quilting books for $10. The museum building was originally built for Emil Jeck’s Ford Garage in 1926. Over the years, ownership changed hands and was a Tradewell store, a Safeway and an office building. It later served as home to multiple store fronts including a shoe repair shop, a photography studio, a mini dollar store, a ceramic school, and print-shop for the Outlook Newspaper. The building then sat empty with a leaky roof until the Sedro-Woolley Soroptimist International donated $10,000 to refurbish the building in 1991 and then $5,000 for each of the next four years to get the museum going. The local Rotary Club donated and installed the signage and awning and every local business and organization
2015 LOGGERODEO
donated what they could along with many personal donations. The museum opened in 1993 and then about 15 years ago the Lions Club donated $5,000 to build “Main Street,” an addition to the back of the museum to represent SedroWoolley’s main street 100 years ago. The museum’s annual membership drive is in January but people are welcome to join in person or online throughout the year. There is also a model railroad set up all year but it only runs fully on special occasions. The annual model railroad open house in February attracts railroad enthusiasts with all the trains running. The lending library has many model railroad magazines available to check-out. The museum organizes/ hosts three Founder’s Day events and runs the Holiday Home Tour, which is its main annual fundraiser. Loggerodeo Steeped in History The World Famous Loggerodeo is Sedro-Woolley’s official 4th of July celebration: Independence Day festivities have been running since 1886, making it the oldest continuous 4th of July celebration in the state. The event brings current and past community members together; many oldtimers who have moved away make trips back to town to visit with friends and family and share in the celebration. The 2015 activities will be condensed into a fun-filled four day experience from July 2nd through 5th. This is good, old-fashioned family fun, stamped with Sedro-Woolley’s history and charm. Although the town of SedroWoolley was celebrating the Fourth of July long beforehand, 2015 marks the 68th annual event called Loggerodeo. The name Loggerodeo, dates back to 1948 when John Conrad won a citywide naming contest, sponsored by the returning World War II vets of the American Legion. He won a $25 cash prize. 1948 was a special year for the Loggerodeo as it was a merger of two events that had 10
often been run separately during the week of the fourth: logging contests and a rodeo. Many old-timers still say that the 1948 event was the wildest Loggerodeo ever. A fireworks display was added along with the street dance in front of the Legion Hall on Murdock. The Ziegler Brothers Carnival had been added in 1946 and continued into 1948 and beyond. The year 1948 also marked the 50th anniversary of the merger of Sedro and Woolley towns, who had each previously had their own Independence Day celebrations. The original Sedro-Woolley rodeo was held in 1914 and consisted of riding, racing and roping exhibitions; it attracted 10,000 people from all parts of the Northwest. The rodeo continued on an irregular schedule until 1934 when community members decided to restore the rodeo at the grounds on Polte road. The Rodeo expanded into a two day event in 1946 and included calf and trick roping; bronco, steer and bareback riding; and bulldogging. In that year, $1,500
2015 LOGGERODEO
in prizes were awarded, including $150 to the best all-around cowboy. In 1948, the competitive logging events were expanded. Rules were codified for the Log Drive; originally nearly 12 feet long, the log was eventually standardized at eight feet with a 14-inch diameter. The log was dropped by a crew from the Marblemount Bridge at 5 a.m. then followed downriver in a motor boat to make sure it wasn’t stolen. Rodeo queen candidates sold raffle tickets to local gamblers who were trying to guess how long the log would take to float down to the Clear Lake Bridge. Depending on the depth of the river and obstructions, the trip varied between 10 to 19 hours over the years. For the last 30 years, the Greg Bisbey Logging Show has presented the logging contests. Visit www.loggerodeo.com for more details and application forms or the NEW Loggerodeo office at 912 B 3rd Street. Historical details were taken from the Skagit River Journal.

Events Fireworks Show and Great Food What would the 4th of July be without “bombs bursting in air?” Sedro-Woolley’s patriotic fireworks show is held at Riverfront Park at dusk on July 4th, sponsored by Loggerodeo. The park has a great “open view” of the night sky and there is ample free parking and room in the park to enjoy the spectacular show. Located right next to the carnival, you can wander over after the fireworks end; the carnival is open until midnight. Fireworks

are provided by Western Display Fireworks of Camby, Oregon. The Highway 20 band will play at the Riverfront Park Amphitheater on the evening of July 4th before the fireworks begin. Check official program for time. Come early to picnic, stroll along the beautiful Skagit River, or tailgate in the parking lot across from the park. Support the Steel Claw Wrestling Club or Beta Clubs through their burger stands, between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. during Loggerodeo.

Community members are recruited to judge the homes and businesses for best use of patriotic colors; awarding gift certificates for first, second and third places. Businesses compete in two categories: Main Street window decorating and off of Metcalf building decorating. Winners are announced in the

carving competitions in the United States. The carvers who compete in this show are the best of the best; to get invited you have to have won or placed in the top of a major carving event. Loggerodeo staged its first carving competition in 1996 which makes this the 20th Annual Chainsaw Carving Championship!

competition is still held today on the corner of Murdock and State Streets, just down from the museum. Carvers from around the world compete in two separate categories. The main event is the log competition; carvers work over the weekend with seven- or eight-foot high all cedar logs to carve beautiful sculptures with themes such as Northwest wildlife and logging. The quick-carve competition runs daily from 10:30 a.m. to noon, which is an entertaining way to see art created in a 1.5 hour time frame.

Judges look for the following five criteria in choosing the best competitors: artistic impact, effectiveness of design, use of material, difficulty and craftsmanship. Don’t miss the awards ceremony after the Sunday auction where awards will be granted for the top five best overall quick carves, a main event award to the top five competitors, plus people’s choice and carver’s choice. The championship runs Thursday, July 2nd, through Saturday, July 4th, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, July 5th from 8 a.m. to noon. Many of the sculptures can be purchased at the daily auctions starting at 5 p.m. the 2nd through 4th and 1 p.m. on the 5th. This year there will be a special quilt made out of vintage Loggerodeo t-shirts and Americana auctioned at 4 p.m on July 4th. The quilt was made by Linda and Butch Stearns and will be displayed at

As a former carver and competitor himself, he has helped coordinate carving shows around the country and knows what it takes to put on a great competition. He also knows the carvers personally, is familiar with their past and recent accomplishments, and has competed against some of them. This year’s event will have 15 carvers, some new faces as well as some crowd favorites such as Bob King, Mark Colp, Davey Gagne, Jeff Samudosky, Matt Hambrook and others. The Grand Parade – Sponsored by Pat RimmerLes Schwab Tires Chief of police, Lin Tucker, will sound his siren to announce the start of the parade, which begins at 11 a.m. sharp on July 4th. Parade contestants check in on Third Street at Parade Central to find their spot and lineup in numbered order. It starts on Third and State Streets, turns left on State Street, right on Metcalf, right on Ferry and then right on Township, ending at the intersection of Township and State. 16
Ten thousand spectators come out to view the parade (which is almost the population of SedroWoolley!), bringing lawn chairs and blankets. Come early to find your spot to watch the parade. The parade will be led by the Color Guard from the American Legion Post 43 from SedroWoolley. Parade dignitaries include the Mayor of SedroWoolley Mike Anderson, Loggerodeo president Jeanne McLennan, Grand Marshal Becky Taft, and the Kiddie Parade winner. The official parade sponsor, Pat Rimmer-Les Schwab Tires, will also be near the front of the lineup. Entries vary from year to year but there are typically 130-140 in the two-hour long parade. Participants may include log trucks, decorated floats large and small, antique cars, antique trucks, and the old John Deere tractors. You will probably see lots of horses
2015 LOGGERODEO
For the 22nd year there will be about 20 antique John Deere Tractors owned by Cascade Two Cylinder-Club members participating in the Grand Parade. Says Paul Hieb, “We started a club to collect and show these special tractors…John Deere is still building tractors the way it always has. Tractors built before 1960 were all made in the USA and make a special sound.” The cold winter months are used for tuning-up the one or two piston powered antiques so they are ready to roll when the weather turns warm. Club members maintain and restore the engines and tractors themselves. The simplicity of the mechanics is part of their charm; it is easy to see how they work. Club members run the engines as slowly as possible so spectators can see the engines work.

Events The Sedro-Woolley Lions Club has been generously organizing and presenting the Grand Parade since before 1950. The Loggerodeo had become accustomed to asking the club to take on the task every year and then about 1950 the club officially took it over. There has been a Lions Club member on the Loggerodeo board since 1950. The two most senior Lions Club members are Wilfrid Dow who joined the club in January 1960 at 31 years old and Gus Suryan who joined in October 1965. Gus and his wife Peggy were honored as the parade’s Grand Marshals in 2012. Wilfrid remembers attending the parade as a child and he and his wife Barbara were honored as the parade’s Grand Marshals in 2013. Organizing such a large event takes a lot of effort. Says Lions Club member Carol Torset, “the parade is one of the biggest events in Sedro-Woolley and the volunteers make it happen.” Of the Lions Club’s 20 members, 15 or 16 are actively involved in putting on the parade along with other members of the 17
community; all are volunteers. The work includes collecting parade applications, selecting judges and the grand marshal, and staging entries for the parade lineup. Parade applications can be found online at www.loggerodeo. com. For the safety of the spectators and in compliance with state law, nothing can be thrown from moving floats or vehicles. Please walk up to the spectators to hand out any candy or items. Please also refrain from shooting water guns at the crowd as it is against the parade rules. Spectators should stay back near the curb for their safety and to give contestants room to put on the show. Grand Marshal This year’s Grand Marshal is Becky Taft who will be riding along with her husband, John, in their 1980 MGB car. Becky is a long-time resident of SedroWoolley and is being honored for her tireless commitment to the betterment of the community. Hired in 1994 when her kids were in the fourth grade, Becky has been the branch manager at the Sedro-Woolley Skagit Bank since 2008. Becky’s community involvement is reflected in the many volunteer roles she fills. She has been the treasurer for the Skagit Boys &
2015 LOGGERODEO
Girls Club since August 2011; a member of the Soroptimist International of Sedro-Woolley since October 2004; and the Vice President of Skagit Women in Business since January 2015. Becky is keen on giving back to the community and says she is lucky because Skagit Bank has always encouraged family and community involvement. Says Becky, “I think it’s important to give back…I volunteer to make a difference and am honored to be chosen as the grand marshal for the parade because it shows that what I do in the community matters. I appreciate being recognized and love to be connected to my community.” Born in Sedro-Woolley and raised in Concrete, she attended Loggerodeo events for the Fourth of July her whole childhood. She moved to Sedro-Woolley in 1983 and worked at the Iron Skillet. Shortly after her move she met her husband John who had moved to Sedro-Woolley in 1981; they married in 1984. The couple raised twins; a boy named Matt and a daughter, Megan. Matt lives close by in Burlington and Megan lives in Park City, Utah, where she is heavily involved in her community. Becky has a passion for photography and recently won first place in the 2015 Burlington Art Walk with a picture of tulips.

The Wildcat Steelhead Club Official Parade FlyoverSubmitted by Don Collin In the 2014 Fourth of July Loggerodeo Parade, the Wildcat Steelhead club sponsored a “flyover” with full cooperation of the Heritage Flight Museum located at the Bayview Airport. The “flyover” consisted of three prop driven planes making three passes over the parade on Ferry Street. The 2015 flyover is sponsored by the Iron Skillet, Wood’s Logging and Janicki Industries; weather permitting it will occur about noon. Says Don, “I consider myself a true patriot; the sound and sight of three military prop driven planes flying low over a crowd makes 18
the hairs on the back of my neck stand up and sends a shiver down my spine. I interviewed well over 100 people after the 2014 parade and had many say that the flyover ‘made the parade.’ To me, the flyover represents the freedom that we enjoy today.” The Heritage Flight Museum has many prop driven planes from WWII and the early Korean War era, which are on display the third Saturday of each month. Please take the time to visit the Heritage Flight Museum; I am sure that you will find it impressive and informative.” Pro-West Rodeo Don’t miss the 81st Anniversary of the Pro-West Rodeo hosted by the Sedro-Woolley Riding Club and sponsored by local businesses! Audience members should keep their eyes peeled for surprise events such as a bulldogger pulling a steer to the ground. The show takes place at the rodeo grounds on Polte Road. Rodeos have existed as a professional sport for more than 100 years. The first rodeo show as part of the Fourth of July celebration in SedroWoolley occurred in 1914 and consisted of racing, riding and roping exhibitions with 10,000 spectators. Today’s rodeos are a prestigious competitive sport with more than 20 million spectators every year but they aim to show the duties of a working cowboy and his duties on the range. For many competitors, rodeo is more than a hobby; it is a career and a way of life.

about the Loggerodeo event, Gagne responded, “A little bit of everything – the parade is always cool, it is a throw-back with a generational influence and it works people up for the Loggerodeo.” Gagne also used to ride bulls and participate in the rodeo event in the Sedro-Woolley Loggerodeo. Gagne added, “It’s really fun to come back and compete in a different fashion now.” When asked about his specialty Davey responded, “My specialty is specialties; I do a lot of custom stuff.” He creates custom designs based on photographs supplied by his clients; he is able to closely replicate the original item. “My favorite items to carve are horses, dogs, and
caricatures but I also carve a lot of salmon, eagles, and bears,” says Gagne. Among his most recognizable work are the two big salmon on display in the hotel lobby of Little Creek Inn in Shelton, Washington, and his eightfoot cowboy standing in downtown Sedro-Woolley. To those who are interested in starting to carve, Gagne advises that they be prepared as there are many tools involved. “It is exciting work and very rewarding to be able to make people happy.” With Gagne’s numerous awards including first place at the Loggerodeo in 2009, he is one to watch closely.

Chris began sculpting ice as a chef about nine years ago and started sculpting wood at the request of the tribe where he was working as chef. Foltz is best known for designs of original characters, comic book heroes, large animals of imagination, re-creations of strange animals, and sculptures of children. When asked how he would describe his work, Chris answered “Mine.” The thing that Chris finds the most rewarding about his profession is the gratification of seeing his kids’ expressions when they first see his sculptures. Chainsaw in hand, intensely immersed as he storms away with wood chips flying, he carves with the same gusto with which he meets all of life’s challenges. Spectators will hold their breath as they watch Foltz create his imaginative carvings.
Jeff Samudosky jmswoodsculpture@yahoo.com
Jeff Samudosky was honored with a second place award for Best Overall Carver in the 2014 carving competition. Born and raised in Shelton, Connecticut, Jeff studied art and photography in high school. After graduating, he traveled the continent as an Outward Bound instructor, ice climber, and whitewater rafting guide. In Jackson Hole, Wyoming, he trained as an Alpine mountaineering guide and became certified as a wilderness emergency medical technician. That was also the place where his life changed drastically. A crash while snowboarding left Jeff with a broken back and no feeling in his legs. After eight months of painful recovery, Jeff was back on his feet. While visiting Vermont, he noticed some wood carvings along the side of a road. He thought, “I could do that” and that was the beginning of J.M.S. Wood Sculpture in 1998, located off of Highway 16. The business has allowed Jeff to live

graduating from Reedsport High School in 2007, Ryan began carving full time and began to attend more competitions. This was followed by a second place finish in the semi-pro main event and two second place finishes in the quick carve at the Ocean Shores competition. He has competed in many international events including the English Open where he took second place. He was a highlight carver on the reality show “SawDogs”. Ryan started his chainsaw carving career in June of 2005 after being apprenticed by Tracie Brittenfield of Packwood, Washington. Ryan then worked under Mark Colp during
the winters of 2007 through 2011 learning more of the trade, which has been hugely beneficial to Ryan’s sculpting career. In 2009 at the age of just 20, Ryan was invited to represent Husqvarna. To this day Ryan creates a oneof-a-kind experience, not only with inspiring sculptures but with Husqvarna’s top-of-the-line power equipment. He enjoys a good challenge and using his imagination to come up with some very unique pieces of art. He also enjoys inspiring his fellow artists with his skills and techniques to help others learn this art. Bob was honored with a fourth place award for Best Overall Carver in the 2014 carving competition. His carving was then purchased by Loggerodeo and donated as a memorial to the town of Oso for the mudslide. Bob started carving in the fall of 1998 after seeing a local carver at the fair. He worked at Boeing and carved on the side until he was laid off and is now the owner of Bear Necessities Sculpture, LLC where he keeps busy filling orders for both private and corporate customers. He entered his first competition after carving only three bears and has been competing ever since. In 2010 Bob was honored with a star in the Carvers Walk 30
of Fame in Mulda, Germany, for winning more competitions than anyone in the world! He has been invited to represent the United States in competitions in Germany, England, Scotland, Denmark, Holland and Canada. He lives in Edgewood, Washington, and carves all around the United States while not at home or travelling abroad. You can follow his travels on both his website chainsawking.com and facebook page www.facebook.com/ ChainsawKing. Bob is one of the original members of the Echo-USA Carving Team; he was asked to join in 2005. He is the main carver for Burton Snow Boards, handling their custom jumps for snow board runs. He has enjoyed working with his teammates in several different venues. He has traveled to Daytona for Bike Week, carved at the Pocono 500

in Pennsylvania and participated in Harley Davidson’s 105th anniversary celebration in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Fun opportunities he would have probably never experienced if not for his sponsorship. Basically a self-taught carver, Bob continues to grow in this art form by learning from other artists and pushing himself to try new things. Bob carves anything from realistic wildlife sculptures to scenes from life as he sees it. He has worked in conjunction with Lucas Films and Disney to build a beginner snowboarders training center at Jay Peak Resort in Vermont featuring the Star Wars and Toy Story characters. His favorite project this past year was commissioned by Microsoft: a couple of World Cup soccer players when they played in Portland. Since then he has had the opportunity to carve the mascot (a Trojan) code named for their new operating system.

and purchased a small saw.” His dreams were soon cut short when two weeks later his new saw was stolen from the garage. Being only 13, Jake pretty much wrote off becoming a carver. Eleven years later his grandmother read an article in the paper about a carver and reminded Jake of his dream so long ago. She offered to buy him a new saw and from then on Jake has been hooked. A few years in, Jake decided to try competitive carving. He entered the Reedsport Divisional in Oregon, taking second place in the semi-pro category. Jake returned the next year and entered as a professional. He took eighth place among 30 of the best carvers in the world.
Don Benson urbanwildlifeart.com Phone: (360) 705-1137
Raised in Shelton, Washington, Don Benson was inspired by his fatherin-law to begin carving in 2006 and became a full-time carver in 2008. He participated in his first carving competition in 2011. Said Don, “I like the people and the competition. Every time I participate in a contest I learn new techniques and grow in the art form.”
He won the Reedsport Carving Contest in 2013 as a semi-pro and has since moved into the professional division. Says Don, “I look forward to competing against the best and growing in my craft.” Don spent a significant part of his younger life in the forests of the Olympic Peninsula where he worked with his father and mother in the logging industry and also spent time harvesting many of the plants native to the region. His artistic interests have ranged from sketching to candle making, martial arts, and singing. Don and his wife enjoy being surrounded by the forest and local wildlife. He says that somehow, “in the noise of the chainsaw and the silence of the forest I have found myself.”
Jake has been featured in many carving articles. He also spent three summers sculpting 16 trees over 12 feet tall for the city of Bridgeport in Eastern Washington; there are ten more slated in the coming years. Jake carves full time and takes custom orders. Jake likes to say “I love to make people smile with my art.”

carving for more than a decade but has been carving for a fulltime career since 2012. Before carving, Jason installed synthetic turf sports fields such as those found in professional sports arenas. The first time Jason picked up the chainsaw to carve was the summer he turned 26 back in North Carolina where his father lives and carves. They set up two blocks of wood and he started with one cut, then another and the next thing he knew he had carved two bears! He came home and started to carve; he carved bears, eagles, fish, guitars and much more. After his first place win at the 2008 Sand and Saw Dust Chainsaw Carving Competition; he received pro status. “My faith very much affects my profession – I pray constantly…I definitely can’t do this carving on my own”, says Jason as he credits God for helping him in his carving. “What I find most rewarding is seeing people’s reactions to my carvings – the “wow” factor,” he says.

Jason has stump carvings on display in cities such as Puyallup along the River Walk, Orting, and Buckley. His largest carving was a donation: a 44-foot tall Veteran’s Memorial in the city of Buckley, Washington. For most of his carvings, Jason uses Western Red Cedar salvaged around Western Washington. While most of the art is chainsaw carved, he also uses chisels and other tools to complete his work. Jason believes in creating quality works of art that people can enjoy for years to come.
to have fun doing it…I have noticed my style improving gradually over time.” Jimmy turned pro in 2008 and has placed well in contests around Alaska. In the last few years he received first place in the Soldotna Saw Fest and has placed second twice in the Seldovia Village contest. Jimmy was pleased to see fellow Loggerodeo carvers Bob King and Chris Foltz come up to participate in the Seldovia carving contest this year. “I look up to those guys,” says Jimmy. This will be Jimmy’s second year participating at the Loggerodeo and he is pleased to be returning. Carisa will also be returning as his contest assistant. Jimmy takes custom orders for his carvings under his business AK Woody.
