One of her favorite stories is from when someone suggested she move the Tulip Festival to July, when the weather is nicer. Approaching a decade running one of Skagit County’s biggest tourist draws, Verge has no plans to slow down. “The overriding thing that I would say about my job is it’s a blast,” she said. “I have one of the best jobs in the world.”

Master silk painter Karen Sistek doesn’t want viewers of her art to feel like they’re just tiptoeing through the tulips. She wants them to see the color and the beauty up close — as if they were a bug on a petal. “What I like to do is zoom in,” she said. “If it was a flower or a field of tulips, I’d be zooming in, like the bug’s eye view or the insect view.” Sistek has been working with dyes on silk for 30 years. “I was so infatuated the first time I touched my brush to the silk,” she said. “… I’ve never become bored.” It’s always changing, she said, and it's always challenging. Some silk artists use something to keep dye colors separate, while others let the dye run together. Sistek has a different method. She uses a spray starch on the silk before putting her brush to the fabric. The fabric then acts like watercolor paper when the dye meets the silk, she said. She has a studio in Port Angeles, where she and her husband Rick live, and her space is now frequented by students coming from as far away as Dubai and Australia to learn her unique technique. After using the spray starch and finishing her piece, the silk is put through a steaming process to bind the fibers of the fabric with the dye. The excess dyes are then rinsed out and the piece is mounted on canvas that Sistek’s husband makes. She then applies a varnish “so the silk looks like it’s floating on the canvas,” she said. The three-foot-by-five-foot banner hangs in the Tulip Festival office in downtown Mount Vernon, to be seen as visitors walk in the door. Sistek had entered to be the poster artist five years ago, having attended the festival and becoming smitten. “I went ‘Oh my gosh, if I could just be a part of this that would be just marvelous,’” she said of one of her visits. Sistek was so excited to be chosen as 2013’s Tulip Festival poster artist that she gave herself bruises from pinching herself after getting the news that she had been chosen, said Executive Director Cindy Verge. “I thought that she did beautiful, elegant tulips,” Verge said. “And I was just very impressed by the work that she did.” goskagit.com

Annual Salmon Barbecue Feeds Hundreds, Benefits Thousands by Vince Richardson Nothing speaks to the gastrointestinal cravings one may encounter after spending a day tiptoeing through the tulip fields as the wafting aroma of salmon on the grill. Since 1953, the Kiwanis Noon Club of Mount Vernon as been supplying the succulent finned delicacy to the masses as a fundraiser. In 1986, the barbecue become an official component of the Tulip Festival and it’s been an integral experience ever since. The 26th Annual Kiwanis Salmon Barbecue will dish out alder-smoked, butter-slathered slabs
of fish with all the necessary sides from 11 a.m to 7 pm daily, April 6-28 at the historic Hillcrest Park Lodge. Adult cost is $12 per plate while children and senior plates are $10 (Visa/MC will be accepted). For groups of 15 or more, call 360-428-5959 or e-mail betsy@tulipfestival.org. “We use about 5,000 pounds of salmon fillets,” said Jerry Jewett, treasurer for the Kiwanis Club Salmon Barbecue for the past 20 years. “A combination of mostly king and silver Salmon wild fish. We purchase from Swinomish Seafood in La Conner. They buy fish from local fishermen and maybe even some from Alaska.” And those sides which were mentioned include baked potato, coleslaw, garlic bread, beverages as well as ice cream. About 7,000 pounds of potatoes are purchased from Safeway at cost and the company also supplies the French bread to the club for a good price. “It does take a special person to cook the fish,” said Jewett, “and we have both men and women that do excellent jobs.” For 23 straight days, club members as well as other volunteers tend the grill in fivehour shifts. “The Skagit Mt. Vernon Kiwanis Club has helped us for the last 10 years,” said Jewett, “and last year we received help from Kiwanis Clubs from Oak Harbor, La Conner and Stanwood.” Walmart employees also donate work, to the tune of about 50 five-hour shifts. Their corporate office donates $5,000 to a nonprofit charity of the employee committee's choice. Since the inception of the salmon barbecue, the club has served up about 370,000 dinners. This year, the Kiwanis Noon Club of Mount Vernon we will give $15,000 in scholarships, $10,000 to help remodel the kitchen at Hillcrest Park Lodge, $5,000 to the Boys & Girls Club, and $5,000 to the Mount Vernon Parks Foundation for a future project at Little Mountain Park. Another $35,000 will be donated in allotments ranging from $200 to $1,000 to many needy organizations in the valley.

Alternate Routes to Tulip Fields are Worth the Effort by Mark Stayton The Skagit Valley Tulip Festival brings people from all corners of the country — and world — to the rich fields and vibrant communities of Skagit County. In fact, a survey performed by event organizers in 2012 found visitors from 49 states and 51 countries at the festival. The flowering fields bring many people here for their first time, and unfortunately, Google Maps and some GPS units steer drivers directly into traffic snarls, Traffic Sgt. Jenny Sheahan-Lee, Skagit County Sheriff’s Office told the Skagit Valley Herald. Last year, drivers using the Kincaid Street exit in Mount Vernon led to slowly crawling traffic downtown, where two-lane and one-way

streets lead to a virtual funnel to cross the Memorial Highway bridge en route to the fields. The slow-motion tour of downtown can be replaced with a scenic drive through prime agricultural land if drivers exit Interstate 5 before they reach Mount Vernon. Coming from the north, take exit 230 toward Anacortes and go south on AvonAllen Road or Bradshaw Road to reach the famous RoozenGaarde and Tulip Town fields, respectively. Coming from the south, use exit 221 and go east on Fir Island Road then north on Best Road to reach the fields. Maps featuring the more efficient routes can be found at tulipfestival.org. Sheahan-Lee said visiting drivers can also have a hard time adjusting to country roads
and sensibilities. Last year, she said at least two collisions were caused by tourists pulling into 50-mph traffic at two-way stops. She also said visitors sometimes park illegally near the fields, either facing traffic or with their tires on the roadway. To stay safe and legal, park in designated parking areas and off of private property, and make sure to look both ways before crossing country roads to view the flowers.
