Kiwanis gears up for 25th year of serving salmon Each spring during the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival the Kiwanis Club of Mount Vernon hosts a 23-day salmon barbecue at historic Hillcrest Lodge, featuring indoor and outdoor dining. Locally-caught salmon is grilled to perfection over the open flame fire pits then served with a smile (as well as a baked potato, cole slaw, garlic bread, a beverage and frozen dessert)! All revenue raised during our three-week barbecue is used to lend funding to agencies and programs in our community that support and promote the health, safety and growth of children. This coming year the 2012 Kiwanis Salmon Barbecue will be held March 31 through April 22. Mark your calendars and help to lead the way to a better life for the children of our Skagit Valley.

“Creating Community through People, Parks and Programs”

After wrapping up another summer of warm weather activities, the valley’s farmers and hobby gardeners are starting to reap the rewards of their respective harvests while the rest of us get to prosper in the gifts of Skagit Valley’s fertile soils by eating cheap roadside corn and other culinary treasures. You have to love the fall--a time of foggy mornings, sunny afternoons, and cool crisp evenings—perfect weather for a hiking and biking the local parks while colorful leaves drop from the canopies above. As the sun sets due west during the time of the equinox, the trees look as if they are glowing in a tawny luminescence. The Douglas Squirrels become possessively vocal, twittering loudly from the hanging tree canopies when unsuspecting two-legged intruders enter their temperate woodlands. For the squirrels, its time to put away nuts and cones as they get ready to hunker down before the dormancy of winter sets in.

From the Directors Chair Director Brian Adams, Skagit County Parks and Recreation

Yes the fall. There is no better time of the year to visit Howard Miller Steelhead Park to stay in one of our new camping cabins and watch as the salmon make their pilgrimage up the fifty mile trek to our campground. You may even get to see one of the resident eagles swoop down and talon a fish. As you make your way up to the campground make sure you stop by the little roadside park at Herns’ Field. There is a good chance you will
