2009 PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARDS Congratulations!
Choice NEW BUSINESS IN 2009 WINNER: Train Wreck Bar and Grill, Burlington Burlington native Nick Crandall worked in construction and on oil rigs in Texas and New Mexico before he decided to fulfill a longtime dream to own a “cool pub” in his hometown. His vision was realized with the opening of the Train Wreck Bar and Grill next to the railroad tracks in old town Burlington, at 427 E. Fairhaven Ave., in November 2008. Crandall purchased and remodeled the building. “I had a lot of people tell me it was a bad idea,” he said. “But I always wanted to do it. ... It was kind of learn as you go.” Crandall said the key to success was hiring Mike Miller as chef. Instead of the venue becoming primarily a pub, the regulars are coming for the food: fried oysters, prawns, burgers, fish tacos, and crab macaroni and cheese. Crandall uses local products from Breadfarm, Blau Oysters and Golden Glen Creamery. “You support other people in business in the area, and they’ll come in and support you,” he said. The runners-up are Salon Rouge, 623 Morris St., Suite C, La Conner; and Baby Icing, A Children’s Boutique, 404 E. Fairhaven Ave., Burlington.
ANTIQUES WINNER: Nasty Jack’s Antiques, La Conner Nasty Jack’s Antiques was established in 1972 by “Diamond” Jim Reynolds and “Nasty” Jack Wilkins in a downtown La Conner building

constructed in 1890. Wilkins was a 20-something workaholic hippie who purchased furniture at auctions for resale at the business. Wilkins passed away in 1994, and the business was taken over by his daughter and son-in-law, Marlo and Gary Frank. The 12,000-square-foot building at First and Morris streets is filled with oak tables, dressers, nightstands, sideboards, wardrobes, fireplace mantels, bookcases, old magazines and vintage English bricks. Nasty Jack’s delivers as far south as Tacoma and as far north as the Canadian border. Each month, the Franks receive a 40-ton container of antiques from Liverpool, England. The couple also travels to England to pick out antiques for the store — something “Nasty” Jack never did because he refused to fly. The runners-up are Dilly Dally Antiques, 501 First St., downtown Mount Vernon; and the Red Door Antique Mall, 111 Freeway Drive, Mount Vernon.

the main reason Blau Oyster Co. is so popular, said owner Paul Blau, who is the third generation Blau family member to operate the business. If oysters sit in the store for a couple weeks, they “lose something,” Blau said. Blau Oyster Co., at 11321 Blue Heron Road in Bow, typically sells its products to restaurants and grocery stores in Whatcom, Skagit and Snohomish counties and internationally through a British Columbia distributor. “We just have a real good reputation for quality of our product,” said Blau. The runners-up are Conway Pub & Eatery, 18611 Main St., Conway; and the Longhorn Saloon, 5754 Cains Court, Edison.
BREAKFAST SPOT WINNER: Calico Cupboard, three locations It’s more than pancakes and eggs at the Calico Cupboard Café and Bakery. First St., La Conner. Each meal is made from scratch with fresh and unprocessed ingredients whenever possible, said Brenda Schmidt, restaurant general manager. Each location has a large bakery with numerous baked goods and desserts. “We want (customers) to go away feeling full and satisfied, and with a feeling that they’ve eaten something good for them and made from good, quality products,” Schmidt said. CHINESE WINNER: Hong Kong Restaurant, Mount Vernon Attention to detail is a quality that restaurant manager Johnny Luo said is important at Hong Kong Restaurant — especially when it comes to food. The owner pays close attention to menu items and refines them to achieve the right taste, said Luo. The restaurant, located at 1300 Riverside Drive, Mount Vernon, serves Cantonese and Szechuan-style cuisine. Friendly service is another draw to the restaurant, said Luo. When customers return they usually bring new customers, friends or family. Conversation among staff and patrons is common, since staff enjoy getting to know their customers. “We have so many people coming back over and over,” said Luo. The runners-up are Asian 1, 145 Cascade Place, Burlington; and China Wok Restaurant & Lounge, 866 S. Burlington Blvd.
FAMILY RESTAURANT WINNER: Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill, Burlington Applebee’s is the largest casualdining chain worldwide with more than 1,990 restaurants in the United States and 15 franchises internationally, according to the restaurant’s Web site. The restaurant chain prides itself

COFFEE SHOP/ESPRESSO STAND WINNER: Nikki’s Espresso, Mount Vernon and Anacortes A small-town feel and a good cup of coffee are what bring more than 150 daily customers to Nikki’s Espresso, said owner Nikki Rambow. The customers and employees get to know each other at the two locations at 2222 Riverside Drive, Mount Vernon, and 12515 Christianson Road, Anacortes. Rambow said this allows customers to feel they’re “coming home and getting a cup of coffee.” Nikki’s has a devoted set of customers who stop by almost daily. “If we don’t see them for a day we’re worried about them. I’m not even joking,” said Rambow. The runners-up are Buckshot Espresso, 111 Fountain St., Burlington; and Morgan’s Express, with locations at 236 W. Moore St., Sedro-Woolley, and 3009 E. “We just try to go beyond everyone’s expectation,” said Kari Vandenbosch. Casual dining with friendly service on a waterfront location is how coowner Kari Vandenbosch describes La Conner Seafood & Prime Rib House. Food quality is important as the restaurant offers as much fresh and local seafood as possible, she added. But customer service is also key, Vandenbosch said. The long-time staff at La Conner Seafood, located at 614 S. First St., La Conner, allows for efficient, friendly service.
