Stanwood Camano GUIDE • 2017/2018 • 1
Welcome to Port Susan Bay Vast farm fields against a canvas of water, trees and the Olympic Mountains greet visitors coming south to the Stanwood and Camano Island communities that wrap around Port Susan Bay. Coming from the east off Interstate 5, visitors can quickly spot several public schools, a movie theater and shopping options. Business districts throughout Stanwood and on Camano offer libraries, art galleries, car repair, construction and housing solutions. Dining choices cover a range of ethnic foods – Italian, Chinese, Japanese, Mexican, Polish, American — and several pubs featuring regional brews. From the south, visitors will notice evergreen and other trees, which host wildlife and bird-watching sites, more farms and

rural dwellings. Valley and island farms support dairy and agriculture, bringing fresh, wholesome foods to tables and markets throughout the region. Snow geese animate fields still golden from harvested crops in fall and winter. Between the mainland and the island, Port Susan Bay to the south, Skagit Bay to the north and Saratoga Passage west of Camano are shining jewels captured by the sometimes-filtered sunshine. Linking the island and mainland communities, the recently upgraded Gateway Bridge crosses a narrow wetland and the Davis Slough between Snohomish and Island counties. Recreation options are plentiful at state and county parks and lakes along the Still-
aguamish River and on Camano Island, some with reminders of the Native American dwellers and early settlers who first lived here. Forested hills on Camano conceal numerous natural attractions – hiking trails, beaches, lakes and views across the eastern bays. Dining and lodging options are available on the island. To narrow your destination choices, stop in at the Stanwood Camano News office or at a visitor center in Stanwood or on Camano Island to pick up more information. May your stay in the Port Susan communities be memorable. Welcome!

About the cover Photo by Jeremiah O’Hagan When Anita — who quietly keeps afloat the front desk, copy machine and countless unseen odds and ends here at the paper — says something, I’ve learned to pay attention. When she says something twice, go. Don’t ask, don’t think, don’t reach for one of the endless, perfectly valid excuses. Just do the thing. That’s how this photo happened. Anita said a woman called about kids building driftwood forts at Iverson. Big forts. Might make a good photo. But I was busy and the weather was iffy and, you know.

cover? I drove to Iverson with my cameras. The light was not perfect. All the kids were in school. But the forts were big. And awesome. And reminded me of countless days spent at beaches in my youth, leaning up my own forts, floating on logs, choking and spitting on the sea. Those who grow up around water carry it in their bones. I don’t know how else to describe it. And the best days around Port Susan are when the tides and breezes get together and fill the air with scents of salt and mud and water. The bay. The mouths of rivers, the shimmer of shores, the hint of the Pacific. Breathe deep.

Traveling through time on Camano Island Historic sites tell the story By SARAH ARNEY Camano’s story is told through the physical buildings that survived the past century and a half, and those historic buildings comprise a tour launched in March 2017. While the official Camano Island Historic Sites Tour is a weekend affair set for April 6-8 in 2018, many of the buildings host events through the year. The tour starts in Stanwood, at the Floyd Norgaard Cultural Center, home of the Stanwood Area Historical Society’s library, museum and event space, at 27130 102nd Ave. NW in Stanwood (sahs-fncc.org, 360629-6110). The first stop is the Camano Lutheran Church, dedicated in 1906, after the church formed in 1890 at Utsalady. In 1895 services were held at the Livingston Bay School, across the road from the current site. The building at 850 Heichel Road is listed on the Washington Heritage Register. (CamanoLutheranChurch.org, 360-629-4592). The second stop on the tour was the final stop for Camano Island’s settlers and some Native Americans, buried at Camano Pioneer Cemetery, 557 E. North Camano Drive. On down East Camano Drive, Kristoferson Farm has been the hub of farm operations for the Kristoferson family for more than 100 years, since 1912. The barn, built in 1914 from Douglas fir milled on site, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2012. The farm at 332 N. East Camano Drive is now home to Canopy Tours Northwest (CanopyToursNW.com). Further down the island, East Camano Drive splits into Elger Bay Road and South Camano Drive. The next historic site on the tour is the South Camano Grange organized in 1930 by O.C. Wisner at 2227 South Camano Drive. The family-friendly Grange organization continues to host community events. Way down the island, near Dallman Road, the Mabana Schoolhouse was built in 1916 by a logger, Peg Leg Anderson, at 3648 South Camano Drive. Now privately owned, Linda Demetré uses it as an art studio and

opens the doors to the public during the Camano Studio Tour in May each year. The first teacher at the schoolhouse, Pearl Wanamaker, was active in Washington state politics (LindaDemetre.com). The tour heads back north to West Camano Drive to find Camano Island State Park, at 2269 Lowell Point Road. In 1949, 92 acres were acquired for a park and the initial development was accomplished in one day by nearly 500 volunteers from across the island and Stanwood (parks.state.wa.us/484/ Camano Island). Continue north on West Camano Drive to find Cama Beach Historical State Park, originally a 1930s-era fishing resort founded in 1934, at 1880 S. West Camano Drive. Muriel and Lee Risk operated Cama Beach Resort for 55 years and in 1990 their daughters acted to turn the property into a state park. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001, Washington State Parks restored the original cedar cabins bordering Saratoga Passage. They are available to rent (parks.state.wa.us/483/Cama-Beach). Both parks are enthusiastically supported by the Friends of Camano Island Parks, Cama Beach Foundation and the Camano Island Quilters who provide handmade quilts and curtains for Cama Beach cabins. Before the resort, Cama Beach was home to the second logging camp on the island after Utsalady. Esary Logging Camp operated at Cama Beach, 1902 to 1908. The family operation had two sets of horse teams, each with six to eight horses.

The last remaining hotel on the island, Camano Island Inn was established at 1054 S. West Camano Drive in 1923 as Hotel Camano, serving log millers, their families and other boarders. The building has changed with the times, but the view of Saratoga Passage remains the same. Today, the elegant inn and spa serves food from its nearby garden (camanoislandinn.com). The next stop on the tour, just up the road, the one-room Camano City Schoolhouse at 993 Orchid Road was built in 1906 to serve the rapidly growing mill town of Camano City. It was used as a school until 1936, then served as a community hall and home to the fire department and Sparklers Auxiliary until 2012 when the building was sold to the Camano Schoolhouse Foundation. The foundation worked to get the building on the Washington state Heritage Register by 2014 (camanoschoolhouse.com). Back at the north end of the island, Utsalady Historic Vista Point, at 398 Shore Drive, marks the point where ship spars were first cut in 1853 and a lumber mill was built in 1856 and the first shipment of lumber was exported in 1860. By 1893 sailing ships carried away its daily production of 74,000 board feet to world markets. The viewpoint is an Island County park (islandcountywa. gov/parks & trails). Down on the bay shore, Utsalady Ladies Aid, at 78 Utsalady Road, was founded in 1908, the second-oldest organization in Island County. Listed on the Washington Heritage and National Register of Historic Places since 1998, the building was constructed in 1923 for $566.73. A symbol of community spirit, “the ladies” continue to plan traditional events for Camano Island communities throughout the year (facebook. com/Utsalady-Ladies_Aid). The final stop on the Camano History Tour is English Boom, another Island County Park at the north end of Moore Road, where the English Logging Co. gathered logs from east of Stanwood to Mount Vernon during the 1920s and ’30s. Pilings left from the operation that closed in 1945 can still be seen from the boardwalk along the beach.

Bridges rise and fall as milestones of expansion, civilization and evolution. Stanwood and Camano residents first spanned the Stillaguamish in August 1909. The structure cost $10,000, and reached its spindly steel arms and wooden planks across the river to replace a ferry drawn along cables. Bands and a baseball game, fireworks and a grand ball marked a new kind of independence: Residents could cross the river at will. By the mid 1940s, the town was ready for a new structure. The bridge was old and horridly narrow for the automobiles of the day, which rattled its planking fiercely as they lumbered across. Rep. Oscar Wenberg — described by Louise Wenberg-Luce, who was married to Oscar’s son, as a man who “believed in public parks and public power” — saw a need. He put the bridge bill through legislature

in 1947, and in 1950 the Gen. Mark Clark Bridge and accompanying span over Davis Slough were completed for $615,000. Dedicated to the commander of United States ground forces and made of gleaming steel and freshly poured concrete, the bridge towered above the town, not only as a feat of engineering and materials, but also as a testament to military prowess. The new bridge was welcomed as wider, safer and more structurally sound, a muchanticipated upgrade. The Twin City News touted its opening: “Under beautiful skies and a brilliant sunshine, the magnificent new bridge

over the Stillaguamish River, connecting the mainland, at Stanwood, with Camano Island, was officially opened last Sunday afternoon, July 23rd, with all proper ceremonies,” the article read. Sixty years later, Stanwood and Camano are still advancing, and the definitions of “wider, safer and more structurally sound” have expanded with them. One thing hasn’t changed, though: The desire to keep up. “History was made 101 years ago, history was made 60 years ago and history was made today,” Senator Mary Margaret Haugen (D – Wash.) said when Camano Gateway Bridge was dedicated to the community in August 2010. The bridge was the capstone of an $84 million SR 532 corridor safety project. Like its predecessors, the newest bridge is an evolution of techniques and materials, including mechanically stabilized earth walls and voided slabs, things unheard of six decades ago. It opened quietly on a Friday. No fanfare, fireworks or grand ball. Just a simple rerouting of traffic, a sign that things had gone as smoothly and efficiently as possible. A sign that things have changed.

A community of artists Enhancing life around Port Susan Bay
By SARAH ARNEY This community reaps benefits from two active arts organization and many resident artists. Camano Arts Association offers the annual Camano Island Studio Tour in May, and the Stanwood Camano Art Guild runs A Guilded Gallery in downtown Stanwood year round. The guild sponsors Art by the Bay Festival, on the old “Main Street” in front of the gallery during the second weekend in July, July 7-9 in 2017. A Guilded Gallery, at 8700 271st St. NW, in downtown Stanwood, features different members each month and hangs a juried show, Art Aloft, in the winter. The guild also organizes an annual show, Art at the Schoolhouse, at Christianson’s Nursery in Skagit Valley during the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival, and its members teach a variety of art classes at the gallery through the year. Both organizations are comprised of many artists who live in and around Stanwood and on Camano Island. They strive to enhance the community with rotating art exhibits around town and contribute scholarships to young artists. Some of those artists run galleries at their own studios, such as Mark Ellinger’s Glass Quest Studio, 31808 W. Lake Ketchum Road, which opens randomly for special events through the year; Chris Tuohy’s Forté Music, Dance and Art studio, 1095 Essex St. A-1, in Utsalady; or Jack Gunter’s History of the World Part II, open noon to 5 p.m. weekends at 3311 S. East Camano. ■ SEE ART, PAGE 31

Port Susan, Stanwood and Camano Island are home to many parks and trail systems that offer a wide variety of natural environments. On Camano Island, two state parks draw visitors year-round. A Discover Pass ($30 for a year, $10 for day-use) is required. Cama Beach State Park is a former fishing resort that reopened as a state park in 2008, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Step back in time with 31 historic 1930s waterfront cabins refurbished with modern conveniences, all available to rent. The park’s partner, Center for Wooden Boats, rents wooden dories, kayaks and other boats. Food and refreshments are available in Cama Center Café, open daily during the summer, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., and on Saturdays and Sundays the rest of the year. Walking trails connect Cama Beach and Camano Island State Park, a mile up the beach. Visit parks.wa.gov or call 360-387-1550 for reservations and information. More than 900 volunteers built Camano Island State Park in a single day in 1949. The 173-acre park has 88 campsites, five cabins and a group camp and dining shelter large enough to accommodate 100 campers. The park has 6,700 feet of shoreline along Saratoga Passage, three miles of hiking trails and two boat-launch ramps, which are open 6:30 a.m. to dusk in summer and 8 a.m. to dusk in winter. Visit parks.wa.gov or call 360-387-1550 for reservations. To reserve a group site, call 360-387-3031.

The 16.5-acre park, at 27116 72nd Ave. NW, has a large covered picnic area, a big lawn for playing games, playground equipment, baseball fields that can be reserved, a disc golf course, which opened in spring 2015, and a short trail through the woods to Church Creek.
Future parks
The city of Stanwood has acquired several properties and has plans in the works to create riverfront public spaces at the spacious Ovenell Farm Park and 2-acre Hamilton Landing Park off of SR 532. Both are expected to offer boat access to surrounding waters. Maps and other information about the city parks are available online at ci.stanwood.wa.us.
Lions Park
Off of Park Drive, north of Cedarhome Drive, Lions Park provides a small open space in one of the city’s more dense neighborhoods. The 1970s-era park was renovated in 2007 with new playground equipment, a basketball half-court, picnic facilities and parking.

Historical society seeks to discover old stories The Stanwood Area Historical Society (SAHS) owns and operates a complex of historical buildings at 17112 102nd Ave. NW, all with a common purpose — to seek and discover, preserve and display stories of the greater Stanwood area. In the museum, open by appointment, materials illustrate and interpret the economic, social and cultural heritage of the region. Set up like a home in the late 1800s, the D.O. Pearson House was built by town father D.O. Pearson. The Tolin House provides some office space and a sales area for the society’s publications, books and calendars. The Floyd Norgaard Cultural Center is available to rent for community events or as a gathering place. Historical communities surrounding Stanwood on the mainland include Warm Beach, Cedarhome, Silvana, Florence, Victoria, Village and Milltown. On Camano Island, Utsalady, Juniper Beach, Livingston Bay, Camano City, Mabana and Elger Bay all have interesting stories from the past. SAHS presents a series of talks named after the world’s shortest railroad — the H&H (Hors d’oeuvres & History), an annual tea in April and an ongoing exhibit called Waistline and Hemlines, which is open for viewing on the second floor of the Floyd during the tea. The exhibit features the museum’s extensive collection of women’s vintage clothing from 1880 to 1970, with outfits ranging from wool swimsuits to lace wedding dresses. And a photography exhibit vividly tells the story of the remarkable women who lived in the Stanwood area during the first 100 years of life around Port Susan. SAHS coordinates a short, kid-oriented parade for the Fourth of July. It ends at the Floyd for an ice cream social and to award prizes for the most patriotic costumes.
Sarah Arney | Stanwood Camano NEWS
An ongoing exhibit on the second floor of the Floyd Norgaard Cultural Center, Waistlines and Hemlines is open by appointment only. D. O. Pearson House is home to the library and museum and visitors should check in at the Tolin House from 1 to 4 p.m. Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. Call 360-6296110. The SAHS Board of Directors meets at 4 p.m. on the fourth Tuesday each month.
The Society also offers concerts, a sock hop and other events that benefit their efforts through the year. For information about tours, renting the Floyd, or anything historical, call 360-629-6110.

Nordic Fair relocates to Stillaguamish Grange
Stanwood Camano GUIDE • 2017/2018 • 11
By SC NEWS STAFF The annual Nordic Fair, formerly known as Cultural Day, has become so popular it needs more space. Slated for Oct. 21, the Daughters of Norway Ingeborg Lodge No. 43 is moving it this year to the Stillaguamish Grange Hall at the Stanwood Camano Fairgrounds. Many of everyone’s favorite vendors will return with new products. Paul and Judy Anderson will display their traditional Scandinavian carving. Bernice Coleman will bring her beautiful Rosemaling. Karen Gates will again offer her creative fabric crafts. With more space to accommodate them, many new vendors are looking forward to becoming part of the yearly tradition of sharing with the community their Nordic craftsmanship, baking, art and history.

Hardanger embroidery or “Hardangersøm” is a form of embroidery used as decoration for the Bunad—traditional folk costume of Norway. It is traditionally worked with white thread on white even-weave linen or cloth, using counted thread and drawn thread work techniques.
Individuals and families will have the opportunity to pose for a holiday picture with Nisse, a special Scandinavian tradition. Look for other new features as well. The annual lunch of open-faced sandwiches and soup will be served, along with desserts, including rømmegrøt and lefse. In keeping with the Norwegian tradition

A five-piece sculpture at the front of Stanwood Library, “The Discovery of Mankind,” is the result of a gift to the Stanwood-Camano Friends of the Library, in honor of Rod Maxim and other friends of the Stanwood Library. The artist, Doug Granum, of Southworth, Washington, was selected for his expertise in Northwest Indigenous mythology. The sculpture was installed in 1999 after Jill Maxim presented a give to the library in honor of her husband.

Tour honors local farmers
By SARAH ARNEY
The evolution of agriculture in the lower Stillaguamish Valley is manifested in a new and different self-guided farm tour throughout the growing season. (Pick up a map at the Stanwood Camano News or from one of the following farms or companies.) What in the past was a dairy farm mecca, with black-and-white Holstein cows visible in every direction, intermixed with fields of peas or corn, is now more about organic vegetables and all it takes to grow them. It’s impressive to see young people out in their overalls raising food for their neighbors. Many of them sell their produce at Port Susan Farmers Market, open 2-7 p.m. Fridays, June through September, near the Amtrak station in Stanwood, and 3-7 p.m. Mondays, July through September, at Camano Farmers Market at Terry’s Corner on Camano Island. Klesick Farms, at 8504 Cedarhome Drive in Stanwood, is one of the first local farms to offer subscriptions for groceries, ■ SEE FARMERS, PAGE 21

A lifeline for animals NOAH The NOAH Center, northeast of Stanwood, works to stop the euthanasia of healthy, adoptable homeless dogs and cats. The Northwest Organization for Animal Help helps families “Build a Bond for Life” with their pets and provides quality spay/neuter programs for low-income residents statewide. Open seven days a week, the facility overlooking Interstate 5 comprises a park-like setting on 17 acres, with an off-leash exercise area for passersby, indoor and outdoor living areas for the animals, a clinic, a store and abundant storage areas for donated pet food. NOAH adopts about 3,000 dogs and cats per year. By working cooperatively with regional animal shelters, the no-kill adoption center gives animals on death row another
chance at life. Upon arriving at NOAH, dogs immediately start manners training. Cats enjoy the luxury of an outside sun porch and volunteers whose sole purpose is to nurture them in a low-stress area. The center is a welcome reprieve for cats that may have been running wild or in abusive situations. The shelter’s foster program helps care for kittens that are too young to move to a new home. NOAH helps alleviate pressure on animal welfare groups working with limited facilities even beyond the Pacific Northwest. NOAH, at 31300 Brandstrom Road, northeast of Stanwood at I-5 Exit 212, is open weekdays, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and weekends, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visit thenoahcenter.org or call 360-629-7055.
CASA The no-kill animal shelter run by Camano Animal Shelter Association (CASA) brings together animals-in-need and caring people, forever enriching their lives. CASA accepts surrendered pets from homes no longer able to care for them and stray pet services specifically for Camano Island. The shelter’s adoption service matches animals with people, provides ongoing support to adopters, and takes back animals for any reason regardless of intervening time, and is serious about commitment. CASA recognizes that finding forever homes for animals is a community effort. It regularly assists other shelters by taking dogs held for a prolonged period of time, those at-risk for euthanasia, and/or pets that could benefit from a change of environment or different exposure. Through ongoing support
from the community, CASA cares for more than 600 lost, abandoned and surrendered cats and dogs in an average year. While CASA’s shelter space may be limited, creative use paired with devoted foster parents allows care of more animals. The small organization offers events like free or low-cost microchip clinics for cat and dog owners and has outfitted hundreds of pets with this lifesaving tool they may not have otherwise received. CASA offers adoption specials throughout the year and every animal goes home spayed or neutered and microchipped. All cats are FeLV/FIV tested. Volunteers are needed for helping at the shelter, providing foster care and helping Friends of CASA raise funds and manage event. A 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, CASA’s shelter at 198 Can Ku Rd, Camano Island, is open 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesdays through Fridays and Sundays and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays. Que Sera is open daily, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with wine tasting and music for monthly openings. Matzke’s Fine Art Gallery and Sculpture Park features an impressive 10-acre sculpture park that can be explored from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. Sculptures in metal, glass and stone hide amid groves of trees at 2345 Blanche Way, south of Elger Bay Grocery. Matzke hangs new themed exhibits quarterly. variety of sculptures adjacent to SR 532 at Terry’s Corner. Look there for the billboard mural that features a map of Camano comprised of artwork from many local artists, coordinated by Dan Koffman. Along with the art, there’s a children’s playground. A Northwest art institution, Pilchuck Glass School, claims a Stanwood address at 1201 316th St. NW, east of I-5, in the Pilchuck Tree Farm near Skagit County. Dale Chihuly founded the school, which has contributed to Pacific Northwest’s international reputation as a center for glass art. The campus is open to the public for an open house in July each summer — Sunday, July 16 this year. Don’t miss the walking tour, “Off the Beaten Path,” which passes Buster Simpson’s tree house and Chihuly’s cabin on the way to Inspiration Point, with a fabulous view of Stanwood and Camano Island.
