2017 Wedding Trends by Colleen Smiley, Owner, Creative Celebrations

Millennials have come to expect instant gratification, so virtual planning has taken over. Most brides have a private Pinterest page to share with their wedding vendors for a look inside their heart and mind, to gain an understanding of their style. Custom Snapchat geofilters and 3D printing to personalize cake toppers, place cards, favors, wedding bands and more are increasingly popular. We’ve also seen more couples live-streaming their ceremony for guests that cannot attend. The ability to have your guests take and share photos in real time has accelerated from Facebook posts to apps and sites such as Snapshot, Wedding Photo Swap, Wedpics and others. In décor, color is making a comeback in most weddings. Gone are the days of burlap and lace and muted tones. Suzanne Rothmeyer Rose-Lily Photography joy to others. What do guests remember? The food and fun! Late night snacks are becoming more of a ‘must do’ as opposed to simply an add-on. Comfort food is the key here. Mac and cheese, truffle fries, pizza, sliders and even taco trucks turn the end of the evening into an exciting surprise. Not to mention soaking up a little alcohol before the drive home. While traditional wedding cakes are still expected by most, a “cutting cake” surrounded by other desserts such as cheese cake, donuts, individual crème brulee, pies, etc. are growing in popularity. Naked cakes, which are unfrosted (or partially frosted) and simply adorned with berries or fresh 4

flowers, are trending as well. Replacing photo booths for some means on-site illustrators who capture the night through live sketches that you and your guests can take home. Four-legged friends will play an even bigger role in upcoming nuptials. From bunnies and donkeys to llamas and even pigs, couples having rustic barn weddings are incorporating farm animals into the wedding day In formal wear, removable skirts are gaining momentum. The bride can have a sheath dress look and a ball gown look for much less than the cost of two dresses. Bare shoulders, plunging necklines and large bows are all over bridal runways. Wedding Guide 2017

In a shift that focuses more on giving than getting, couples are embracing charity registries, which allows guests to make a donation in their honor. This is especially popular in established households. Today’s couples are concerned with the impact their celebrations are having on the environment, opting for greener alternatives for food, flowers, invitations, party favors and more. Weddings continue to be the ultimate personal statement for couples, completely customized to feature their favorite foods, florals and traditions. Be creative and make your wedding memorable by incorporating something new and you! goskagit.com

F

or couples planning a wedding in 2017, a good way to get off to the right start is to check out a wedding show or two, such as the Skagit Wedding Showcase on Feb. 19 in the Swinomish Lodge

near Anacortes or the Port Susan Wedding Show slated for Feb. 25 in the Camano Center on Camano Island. Gayle Picken, with 66Events & Marketing and organizer of the Port Susan Wedding Show, is a firm believer in wedding shows. “The great thing about a wedding show is that you have the chance to meet with lots of wedding professionals all at the same place,” she said by email. Show visitors can talk to wedding planners, venue owners, tux and gown merchants, florists, photographers, caterers, DJs, and providers of numerous other wedding details. “When you meet them in

person, you have a chance to see samples of their work and ask questions. You can really get a feel for what it will be like to work with them,” Picken said. “Many caterers provide samples of their appetizers and cakes. Yum!” “Attending a wedding show is also a fun way to spend time with your friends and family members who will be helping you prepare for your wedding!” she said. And, you may discover their ideas mesh closely with yours. Or not. Colleen Smiley, organizer of the Skagit Wedding Showcase, said couples find parents’ involvement the most difficult part of planning a wedding.

“Seriously, it’s what I hear the most,” she said recently by email. “Divorced parents holding grudges and refusing to cooperate for their sons’/daughters’ special day, or demanding certain choices because it’s what they want.” Coming in a “close second is defining the guest list without offending someone,” Smiley said. A wedding show, especially a larger one, is a great place to get a unique idea to implement in your wedding ... from decorating ideas to cool photo booths and unique table settings and floral arrangements. “Be creative, start a trend!” Smiley said in a 2016 wedding story. “No one talks about cookie cutter weddings.” Smaller, local shows, on the other hand, are where couples will want to “talk with qualified

local vendors that can service their needs without horrendous travel/delivery charges,” she said in January. One of the first considerations, perhaps the most important, in planning a wedding is the location. “Choose a venue and get the date locked in,” Smiley said. Many venues are booked a year in advance, so the date you had in mind may not work, she explained. Next, choose a wedding planner and photographer. “Many vendors can service multiple weddings in one day, but these two cannot be in two places at once for the entire day,” Smiley said. At a wedding show, couples can talk to several venue owners, learn whether they can offer onsite catering or entertainment and which other wedding professionals

they prefer to work with. The answers may quickly simplify or complicate your big day. Smiley recommends couples choose professional services for at least part of their wedding. “Planning, photography and entertainment (band/DJ) are best left to a professional,” she said. As with any event involving people, something during your wedding is bound to happen differently than you planned. So, after the wedding will you focus on the problems, or will you focus instead on the happy, memorable moments of your big day? Ben Dery, a KING-5 TV meteorologist, offered some sage advice on that point to prospective couples during a recent segment on weddings: “Think about what you will talk about afterward.”

Pre~Wedding Checklist Sixteen to Nine Months Before Work out your budget. Pick your wedding party.

Start composing a day-of timeline. (Draw up a schedule of the event and slot in each component, like the cake-cutting, the first dance).

Five to Four Months Before

Start the guest list.

Book the rehearsal and rehearsal-dinner venues.

Hire a planner, if desired. (A planner will have relationships with—and insights about vendors.)

Check on the wedding invitations. (Ask the stationer for samples of the finished invitations and revise them to suit your needs.)

Reserve your date and venues.

Select and order the cake. (Some bakers require a long lead time, attend several tastings before committing to any baker.)

Location for ceremony and reception. Book your officiant. Research photographers, bands, florists, and caterers.

Eight Months Before Hire the photographer. Book the entertainment. Meet caterers.

Three Months Before

Finalize the order of the ceremony and the reception.

Select and purchase invitations.

Print menu cards, if you like, as well as programs.

Start planning a honeymoon. (Make sure that your passports are up-to-date, and schedule doctors’ appointments for any shots you may need.)

Purchase the rings. (This will give you time for resizing and engraving.)

Arrange transportation. (Consider limos, minibuses, trolleys and town cars.)

8

Mail the rehearsal-dinner invitations.

Confirm times for hair and makeup and all vendors.

Schedule your second dress fitting.

Book a florist.

process can take up to Get your marriage license. (The proce six days, but it’s good to give yourself some leeway. If you are changing your name, order several copies.)

Choose your music.

Register. (Sign up at a minimum of three retailers.)

Call people who have not yet responded.

Send out as many final payments as you can.

Order favors, if desired.

Send save-the-date cards.

Enter RSVPs into your guest-list database.

Schedule hair and makeup artists.

Reserve hotel rooms for out-of-town guests.

Meet with the officiant. (Map out the ceremony and confirm that you have all the official documents for the wedding, these vary by county and religion).

One Month Before

Visit the dressmaker for your last dress fitting.

Finalize the menu and flowers. (You’ll want to wait until now to see what will be available, since food and flowers are affected by season.)

Shop for bridesmaids’ dresses. (Allow at least six months for the dresses to be ordered and sized.)

Enjoy a bachelorette party.

Purchase wedding shoes and start dress fittings. (Bring the shoes along to your first fitting so the tailor can choose the appropriate length for your gown.)

Purchase a dress. (You’ll need to schedule time for at least three fittings.)

Seven to Six Months Before

Submit a newspaper wedding announcement. (See Pg. 13)

Send your event schedule to the vendors. (Giving them a first draft now allows ample time for tweaks and feedback.)

Two Months Before Touch base again with all the vendors. Meet with the photographer. (Discuss specific shots, and walk through the locations that appeal to you.)

Stock the bar. (Now that you have a firm head count you can order accordingly.)

E-mail and print directions for drivers of transport vehicles.

Week of the Wedding Reconfirm arrival times with vendors. Delegate small wedding-day tasks (Choose someone to bustle your dress, someone to carry your things, someone to be in charge of gifts). Send a time line to the bridal party (Include every member’s contact information, along with the point people you’ve asked to deal with the vendors, if problems arise.) Pick up your dress. Check in one last time with the photographer. (Supply him or her with a list of moments you want captured.) Set aside checks for the vendors. (And put tips in envelopes to be handed out at the event.) Book a spa treatment. (Make an appointment for a manicure and a pedicure the day before the wedding.)

Review the playlist with the band or DJ.

Send the final guest list to the caterer and all venues hosting your wedding-related events.

Send out the invitations. (Tip: Mail invitations six to eight weeks before the ceremony.)

Pack for your honeymoon.
