YOUTH PROGRAMS Mount Vernon Parks and Recreation invites individuals with special needs to participate in our programs. Please call in advance if accommodations are necessary for successful participation.

Evergreen Musik Garten Session 1: Cycle of the Seasons Wind Dancers Singing, dancing, storytelling, playing instruments and exploring the imagination are just a few of the things you will experience in this fun and nurturing environment. Children will delight in discovering nature and the seasons through music and movement. This is an exciting learning and social class setting for child and adult together. Classes are limited to 12 children. Adult and children: wear clothes to move around in!

Session 2: Sun Catchers, starts in January!

Little Kickers What do you get when you combine baseball & soccer….KICKBALL! Come out and kick the red rubber ball on the baseball field. Our teams will learn how to kick the ball, run the bases, and have fun in an indoor setting. Rules and field size will be modified for this age group. This is a great fall sport for your active youngster! Sign up individually or with a team! Coaches needed!

Introduction to Babysitting The American Red Cross will give you all the skills you need to be a great babysitter! This course prepares young people for situations that may arise while caring for younger children. Instruction will cover the many responsibilities and skills required of a safe babysitter including supervision, play with children of various ages, basic child care, safety precautions, accident prevention and critical emergency action skills. In addition you will also learn the basics of first aid and choking. Students will receive a babysitter’s handbook. This course is a great introduction to the working world and a wonderful way to boost your child’s self confidence. Remember to bring a sack lunch.

ADULT & FAMILY TRIPS Mount Vernon Parks and Recreation is partnering with Recreation Without Borders to offer family and adult trips this Fall! Owner Lauren Woodmansee has over 18 years experience in the field of Parks and Recreation providing quality trips and programs for individuals of all ages, interests and abilities. Recreation Without Borders specializes in trips, tours and adventures throughout the Northwest. Registration fees include supervision, transportation and admission fees but do not include food, beverages or other purchases unless specifically noted.

Whidbey Island is now home to seven wineries, each with its own distinct personality and passion for winemaking. Zoolights at Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium Every holiday season, the Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium glows with more than half a million lights. Total Fitness, Total Fun! Belly Dancing is a rewarding and exciting exercise program that burns up to 300+ calories an hour.

Belly Dancing utilizes the muscles from your head to your toes. Belly Dancing is a low impact, weight bearing exercise that can help strengthen bones and prevent osteoporosis. Small Dog Basics This class is offered for small or toy breeds, 6 months or older and less than 20 pounds. This class provides the same training as the Basic Training class however we will also cover many of the issues specific to the pee-wee set like: shyness, barking, house-soiling, separation anxiety and more. This is a great start for new owners of little dogs and a “start over” for frustrated owners of older dogs. First night of class is for humans only, please leave dogs at home on this night. Proof of vaccinations is required. Owners must be able to control their dogs on a leash in order to attend this class.

Beyond Basic Training for Dogs This class if offered for well-socialized dogs that have completed at least one obedience class and wish to improve skills through a series of fun and stimulating exercises. Previous skills will be reviewed on the first night of class. This class focuses on distance, duration, and distractions.

Most exercises are conducted off-leash and with multiple dogs. Your dog will learn tricks, some

agility, doggie freestyle and much more. One class will be dedicated to preparing for the AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC) test. Dogs do attend the first night of this class.

Puppy Boot Camp

Puppies 12 weeks to 8 months will learn socialization skills, basic obedience commands and good manners. Learn how to handle jumping, nipping, biting and chewing and puppy “ADD”. We will have discussions on potty training and the benefits of crate training. Learn how to raise a happy and obedient pup with kind and gentle methods. Basic Dog Obedience

Dogs 8 months and older, will be taught basic skills like: sit, down, leave-it, stay, coming when called, wait at door, loose leash walking and heel. Hand signals and verbal commands will be taught. We will also work on any existing (nonaggression) behavioral problems like barking, digging and jumping. This is a good class for the adopted shelter dog or older dog who needs some stimulation or a refresher course. Clickers will be demonstrated, but are optional. First night of class is for humans only, please leave dogs at home on this night. Proof of vaccinations is required. Owners must be able to control

their dogs on a leash in order to attend this class.

Tai Chi/Qigong This seven week session is for anyone curious about Chinese meditative/movement activities.

We will concentrate on gaining an awareness of Qi and how to use that awareness to enhance our well being. Participants will learn a variety of movements from various Tai Chi and Qigong Forms that are easy and enjoyable to learn and practice. Wear comfortable, loose fitting clothing.

Tai Chi for Health Tai Chi is a traditional Chinese exercise that has been a daily prescription for health and longevity for hundreds of years. Tai Chi focuses on balance, posture, relaxation, breathing, visual and mental concentration. The very graceful and fluid movements promote mind and body harmony.

Mount Vernon Trail Builders

The mission of the Mount Vernon Trail Builders is to advocate for, build and maintain sustainable multi-use trails on Little Mountain, and create a Community Trail System for Mount Vernon that

Mount Vernon Dog Park

Mount Vernon Parks & Recreation has selected a site for the first off leash Dog Park in Mount Vernon. One early Saturday this summer I took my family to the Montgomery-Duban Headlands to hike the bluffs and enjoy the views. Within ten minutes of sitting on a rocky bald just above the beach cavern known as the blowhole, our attention was beckoned by a magical show put on by a pod of venturing Orca whales as they strolled along the craggy shores. To the west of the whales was a caravan of sightseeing whaleboats anchoring up while the passengers fixing their sight on pod. The whales spun, rolled, and hopped along the Salish waters while the boats bobbed and weaved with the tides as passengers leaned against the boat rails with their cameras pressed against their faces. After a fifteen-minute show, the whales made their graceful exit south towards Deception Pass, the boats pulling anchor and following closely behind.

As we watched the boats disappear with the whales, my son pulled our interest to the immediate vicinity. He pointed

The jellyfish was 3 feet in diameter, rusty in color, and hung along the shore for a good half an hour. A group of four Sea Lions appeared suddenly, lifting their heads collectively towards shore while peregrine falcons zipped along the water’s edge in the direction of the whales. Perhaps word was out and they wanted a chance to enjoy them too?

For an hour, the kids scouted the waters to see what animals would entertain them next. There were no electronic disturbances and the sounds we heard were mostly produced by the waves as they crashed against the rocks below. On the bluffs, spent Camas lilies were curling back towards the mosses below as the foliage from the Madrona trees twisted in the breeze. In the waters below, the kelp shifted and swung, wagging their collective tails to the tempo of the waves, their heads only slightly elevated above the water’s

Walking away from the distractions of home and into the natural environment wasn’t necessarily what the kids wanted when the day started but their experience was something that inspired them. The trip enticed them and will be etched in their memories for much longer than an episode of The Simpson’s would have been. In an era of electronic gadgetry our parks give us an alternative place to collect and unwind. Fall is a great time to venture out. The weather is still warm and trails are often less crowded. We invite you to try one of your parks on for size; there is an experience waiting.

Two age groups to choose from! This basketball skills camp is for boys and girls ages 5 - 13 years old. The camp focuses primarily on the development of proper basketball fundamentals.

Participants are divided into small working groups for optimal skill improvement. Two locations are used for this camp: 5 - 8 year olds play at Mount Baker Middle School and 9 - 13 year olds attend Skagit Valley College.

All participants will meet at Mount Vernon High School with MVHS varsity coaches and players for one session of the camp. Camp runs for six weeks and each camper receives a commemorative basketball! Register early…this camp fills up very quickly!

2011 Boys S.W.I.S.H. Basketball League Hands down….The LARGEST & BEST Boys Basketball program in the area! Skagit, Whatcom, Island and Snohomish Hoops (S.W.I.S.H.) is open to all boys in 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grades. Participants may either register as a team or individually (individuals will be placed on a team by community or school affiliation). League runs for 10 weeks and includes a minimum of 11 games. Practices are determined by team coaches.

Autumn Birds of the Skagit Flats Fall is a great time to focus on newly arrived migrants and those persistent locals that stay through the winter. Join naturalist, Libby Mills, for a morning of watching and listening for birds around Padilla Bay. We’ll begin near the Interpretive Center and end up carpooling to local spots on the Skagit Flats. Wear warm outdoor clothing and pack binoculars, field guides, and snack or lunch.
