“Creating Community through People, Parks and Programs”

From the Director’s Chair Director Brian Adams, Skagit County Parks and Recreation

A few short years ago I had the opportunity to guide a class of elementary students on their field trip to “Mountain Camp” on the western range of the North Cascades. For many of these kids it was the first opportunity to escape the nest to fly high with their school aged peers. Removed from cell phones, computers, televisions, video games and other electronic paraphernalia, the students were persuaded to enjoy their surroundings without the customary electronic appendages fixed to their extremities. Electronic free, the students spent all day every day delving in to the expansive open spaces as they explored open meadows, babbling creeks, and dense forests. On the final day of camp they ventured out on the duff covered trails aside the cascading stream beds as they meandered their way to the foothills of Sourdough Lookout. Along the way they gazed mesmerizingly at the bottom of spraying waterfalls, skipped metamorphic rocks on glacier fed lakes, and inhaled the rich sweet sugary fragrances escaping from the glowing awning of maple leaves. The journey was magical and inspiring for the fith grade students and reminded me of how lucky I am to be living in such a geographically unique and biologically wealthy area of our country. Many of us have lived here for years and oten take the beauty of our magnificent emerald trees, our clear mountain lakes, our nutrient

rich wetlands, our multihued wildflower meadows, and our life sustaining streams for granted. Seeing the wildlife and the supporting landforms through the eyes of these fith graders gave me a renowned respect for the biotic riches of the northwest. The field trip to Mountain Camp made me think back to the significance of growing up in the natural beauty of Skagit County. Swimming the local lakes, camping in the surrounding forests, and riding toboggans down the neighborhood hills were all enriching experiences that became a part of who I became--without the influences of the local beauty my life would be very different. Can you think of ways in which your life would be different without the time you spend in the parks and natural areas of Skagit County and the Pacific Northwest? What if you didn’t drive under a canopy of trees on your way to work? What if we couldn’t see Mount Baker on a clear day or cross a bridge over our miraculous waters? I would venture to believe these parklands and sights interweave with your everyday experiences and are an important component in all of your lives. Skagit County Parks and Recreation invite you to make time in your busy lives to enjoy your local parks. Ater all, I believe ater a little thought you will discover these parks are a little part of who you are.
