T
he memories and visions of Washington Park collected through the Anacortes American’s photo contest are an inspiration to all who will see them. A sincere thank you to all who have submitted. A favorite place is like a favorite gift we are lucky to be able to unwrap time and time again. The treasure inside the package is never the same twice. Washington Park is such a treasure. We recently celebrated the Washington Park centennial. It gave us the chance to reflect on the dynamic history of our community, and the vision of our city’s founding families to preserve the rich and wonderful natural resources we have come to know as our parks and forest lands. Washington Park has evolved over the past 100 years in a role that is unique to thousands
of local citizens and visitors from abroad. From the scattering of ashes to plaques on benches, the silent walks of grief and joy to family reunions on the same summer weekend for as long as anyone can remember, this park is an essential part of people’s lives, and the photos collected in the contest reflect this. Once a quiet boat launch with a few campsites and trails, Washington Park is now an essential stop on any tour of Fidalgo Island. The green 220-acre peninsula beckons kayakers, hikers, campers and picnickers from around the world. The park’s boat launch is the closest to the San Juan Islands, and is the start and end point to many a boat, sail, fish and crab trip. The Loop Road has no rival. People of all abilities and ages enjoy its forested, windy

route every day of the year. There is an entire community that belongs to the Loop Road, daily hellos enjoyed and heart rates raised in the spirit of the park, its past and its future. I would like to thank the Anacortes American for sponsoring this photo contest, as well as all of you generous enough to share a glimpse into your relationship with and sense of this park. I see the love and care for it every day. As one in a long line of Washington Park stewards, along with so many of you, I give my own thanks. I can’t wait to unwrap the gift again.
