Improved Student Safety in collecting Core Samples An important series has begun to focus on the improved safety of miners on the job with the introduction of the Diamec Smart Core Drilling rig. This rig is based on the rig control system of the mine and comes from Atlas Copco. The new control system will allow miners to complete the job without the need to handle tube and drill rods while collecting core samples. This new and improved method will improve the safety of miners exponentially and will help them to continue to collect vital core samples with less risk. One of the main goals of this project is to help improve the safety of students that are learning the trade. Students are now safer than ever and it is the focus of the company to make sure that students of the Witwatersand in Africa can help collect core samples without fear of injury. Atlas Copco South Africa communications manager stated rightly that the future of mining in Africa rests on the heads of those students that are working on becoming professional miners. Similar technologies are already in use in the United States and this type of innovation in a place like Africa is phenomenal. Students will now be able to have a hands on experience while remaining safe and learning the tools and methods of the trade. It is the goal of the project to help these students remain safe and still be able to be part of the learning process.
