Preliminary USGS Iron Ore Statistics for ​ December 2015 By John Edward According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) report by Mineral Commodity Specialist Christopher A. Tuck, U.S. mine production and shipments of iron ore in May 2015 were 3.62 million metric tons (Mt) and 5.38 Mt, respectively. Average daily production of iron ore was 117,000 metric tons (t), 10% less than that of April 2015 and 23% less than that in May 2014. Average daily shipments of iron ore were 173,000 t, 44% more than those in April 2015 and 9% less than those in May 2014. Mine stocks at the end of May 2015 were 13% less than those held in April 2015 and 5% greater than those held in May 2014. U.S. exports of iron ore were 981,000 t in May 2015, almost double those in April 2015 and 18% less than those in May 2014. U.S. imports of iron ore were 518,000 t in May 2015, almost triple those in April 2015 and 14% less than those in May 2014.
