Fall 2016

This was the first Fall Nationals that I’ve missed in quite some time. It’s become tradition that we celebrate our son’s birthday in rain boots and flood gear at Fort Shenandoah since his birthday often falls during the Nationals. But this year, we have a teenage girl whose Homecoming Dance happened to be the weekend of Nationals. And so of course, there wasn’t a flood. I guess I should stay home more often! I hope you enjoy looking over the results and photos from the 134th National Skirmish. If you see any errors or omissions, please let me know so that I can rectify them.

Submission Guidelines & General Notes: Send your articles to skirmishline@n-ssa.net. All articles should be typed and saved in plain text format - so as a Word, Word Perfect, or text document with no fancy formatting necessary. Do not use numbered lists or bullets as they can cause interesting problems. Also, while it’s fine to insert photos in your article, the actual high resolution photo files themselves (jpeg, jpg, png) must be also be attached separately in order to preserve their quality. If you send me a PDF file, please make sure you also send me the plain text file. PDF’s are helpful in that I can see exactly what you’re wanting your article to look like, however, I can’t easily extract the information to include it in the magazine and pdf images often turn out blurry when converted. Photos, illustrations, etc. must be at least 300 dpi or the image will be rejected by the printer. If you are including a photo in your article, attach the original photo file, jpg format is best, and the highest quality possible and give it a descriptive name which can be used as a caption. Don’t forget to include your name as the author of the article so that proper credit can be attributed. Deadlines and details for the next issue will be published in each issue, just under the Table of Contents. An annual schedule is included in this issue on page 74 as well since this is one of the questions I receive most often! If this schedule changes, I will publish it here again.

Breaking Camp By the time you read this, my term as commander will have ended. While I have many thoughts in my mind, and feelings in my heart about my experiences over the last four years, I can say without reservation that being your commander was a great joy and I enjoyed myself immensely. I am happy to report that your association is in fine operational and business condition. Our important staff and committee posts are all led and staffed by very dedicated and motivated individuals with the best interests of the N-SSA at heart. In particular, our joint marketing and recruiting efforts, ably led by Melinda Shaw and Chris Defransici, are moving forward and we are seeing a rise in the number of members joining. Thanks to the able financial management of our longtime Paymaster, Jim Baird, we will be paying off our latest land purchase debt by the end of this year. Wayne Jordan has taken a dormant 501(c)3 program and revitalized it into a program that can provide a financial benefit to both our membership and the N-SSA. The Skirmish Line, under the editorship of Chris Branch, is back on course and schedule. The Property Management and Small Arms Offices, under the leadership of Scott Lynch and John Holland respectively, continue to operate at a high level of efficiency and “customer service” to our membership. Linwood McMahon continues his work as our IT manager, and, with the able assistance of Richard “Ernie” Wood, he ensures that our computer programs are up to date and running properly. And, of course, our Property Manager, Tim Scanlan, and Executive Secretary, Judy Stoneburner, continue their untiring work for our association. They are the best of the best. I have every confidence that our new National officers will continue the direction that has been set over the last six years. Commander Booz is a long-time skirmisher and fine man. His past experience as an educator and school administrator, his service in many N-SSA offices, and a passion for the history of both the American Civil War and the N-SSA, will serve him well. I expect nothing short of solid, forward-thinking leadership from him. I must make mention of the fine service rendered by Frank Kapper as our Past Deputy Commander. His counsel to me was always honest and well-considered. He completed every task required of him well and on schedule. I value his friendship and admire his tireless service and support to the N-SSA. I know he was disappointed to lose the election, but I also know that he will continue his selfless service to the association. A good man he is. We thank Past Deputy Commander, Frank Kapper for his service and support to the N-SSA. 4

What will I miss? First and foremost, I will miss working on a daily basis with all of our board, staff, and committee members and officers. They truly are the “Dependables” of our association. These hard-working, dedicated people are the ones who do all the heavy lifting to make our association run well on a day-by-day, regional, and national basis. I admire them so. I will miss the phone calls and emails from our members over matters that might seem trivial to some, but are of importance to them. I listened to their worries and concerns and helped out whenever I could. I will miss Sunday mornings at the Nationals, looking up and down the line to see the units in formation with their proud colors flying. Those flags are very important, as they define the memory of the important heritage and great personal sacrifice that gives our great association its foundation.

National Commander Phil Spaugy

But most of all, I will miss what, to me, was the best part of being commander, the presentation of the 50year awards. If one wishes to understand skirmishers’ deep personal value of - and heartfelt devotion to - our great association, all you have to do is look in the mist-filled eyes of those receiving this lifetime award. As a commander, it both inspires you and gives you the understanding that your largest duty and responsibility is to make sure that you protect the legacy of our association and ensure the future of this organization that has so much value to so many. So in the end, I wish to express my sincerest “thank you” to all of our membership for allowing me the great privilege of being your commander, and for the last four years entrusting me with something that has so much value to so many of you. It truly was one of the great honors of my life. All in all, I had fun. And fun is good.

Donate to the N-SSA this Year Strengthen our organization and get a tax deduction as well! This year, our Board is trying to pay off the remaining land loan for the purchase of Area 7 nearly ten years ago. That current balance is close to $125,000. It is to our benefit to get this loan off our books and eliminate the interest payments. Please help the N-SSA to pay of this debt now!

As you consider your year-end giving plans, please add the N-SSA to the list of organizations that you support. All donations, no matter how small ($10, $20, everything makes a difference), will help to preserve Fort Shenandoah, the N-SSA, and the history that we honor for future generations of skirmishers. Any checks dated by December 31 will be logged in as a 2016 charitable donation. Receipts will be mailed to all donors. For your convenience, use the return envelope that is packaged with this edition of the Skirmish Line to send in your donation.

Some Easy Ways to Support the N-SSA this Year AMAZON - Remember to use the Amazon Smile program this year when doing your Christmas shopping. Log in at smile.amazon.com and designate the North-South Skirmish Association to receive the charitable rebates. For more info, please refer to the article in the Summer 2016 Skirmish Line. IRA DISTRIBUTIONS – Have you taken the last of your Required Minimum Distributions (RMD) from your IRA accounts yet for 2016? If not, and you are at least 70 ½ or older, you may receive some significant tax benefits by donating part of it to the N-SSA before the end of the year. For more info, see the article in the Spring 2016 Skirmish Line. CHARITABLE GIFT FUND - Have you considered opening a Charitable Gift Fund account with your brokerage firm? It can be a great tool for helping you to time your charitable giving and maximize tax benefits. For more info, see the article in the Fall 2015 Skirmish Line. EMPLOYER MATCH – Does your employer have a program to match your charitable donations? If so, there is still time this year to utilize this tool to double your contribution at no cost to you. IN MEMORIUM – You may make a donation in the name of a committed skirmisher who has passed away. Or you could donate in the name of your team, your region, or a fellow skirmisher. ESTATE PLANNING – Have you considered including the N-SSA in your estate plan? There are many ways, both simple and complex, to leave something behind for our organization. Please watch for articles about this subject in upcoming editions of the Skirmish Line.

Show your support for the N-SSA and be listed in the Society of Color Bearers in the next edition of the Skirmish Line. Along with your Thank You letter and receipt, we’ll send you a donors’ static cling decal to display on your vehicle or camper window. Let your fellow skirmishers see that you are a supporter of our organization. Let’s see a lot of these decals on display by the next National Skirmish! Skirmish Line

William “Bill” Beadling Receives 50 Year Award By: John A. Sharrett III

Bill was scheduled to receive his 50 Year Award at the 134th National but, due to a recent illness, was unable to attend. As a member of the Awards Committee and longtime friend of Bill’s, I decided to travel to the Outer Banks of North Carolina and make the presentation in person. In 1972, Bill and I served on the N-SSA Board of Directors together. He was the Allegany Regional Commander, and I was the Tidewater Regional Commander. Starting as a member of the Chartiers Valley Guard, Bill is now a member of the 7th North Carolina. I stated my intentions to his team and three members showed up for the presentation. Bill is 97 years old and his wife of 71 years, Gladys, is 94. His memory is very sharp, much better than mine. We visited for over two hours and enjoyed some fine memories.

L to R: David Disbennett, Dave Disbennett, Bill Beadling, John Sharrett, and Riley Williams.

To celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Women in Skirmishing, a special competition was held on Friday, October 7th at the 134th Fall National. Teams of female skirmishers, 4 musket shooters and 4 carbine shooters, competed with each other in a two-event match. Neal Friedenthal shared his remembrances of the first female N-SSA member on his Facebook page: 25 years ago, it doesn't seem that long ago, the 15th NJVI sent in an open application to the N-SSA for a woman member, Janet Vroom, which started a process of several months to open the ranks of our organization to women members. Janet was subjected to more than her share of ridicule not only by some male members but also by some of the wives and other female relatives of some members, but she hung in there and along with the help of several other units the rule change was brought to a vote and it passed. Janet was denied permission to shoot at that national and another woman would be the first woman to shoot at an N-SSA event, but her competitor number had already been assigned and was the lowest officially assigned to a woman in the N-SSA. Although she is no longer an N-SSA member she is the First Lady in the N-SSA.

Certificate of Recognition - 1991 Charter Members of the Women in the N-SSA Jacqueline A. Holland, Nancy Crockett, Michele Dam, Mary Deneau, Karen Lee Gaskill, Melissa Huntoon, Edie Jordan, Lora Cahill, Kathy Kindle, Sheila Lauer, Elizabeth M. Lee, Peggy Edwards Shaw, Jo Sherry Wolbers 54

By Joe Plakis, III Many of us dream about seeing someone shoot a 98-4x, let alone shooting it ourselves! I can remember when we were entering the data into the computer program, our jaws dropped immediately and we just had to see the target. So we pulled the target and stared in amazement at what we saw, a 98-4x. Then curiosity began to stir, could this be the highest score shot at the Fort this weekend?!?!? So we quickly ran down to the results wall, and found that it was the second best score, which in no way takes away from the tremendous accomplishment. If anything it shows how bright the future is for the N-SSA! That is what the N-SSA Tenderfoot BB-Gun Competition is providing for the NSSA, a bright future, and oh boy is it bright! Many might not be aware, but over 75% of the competitors in the program join the N-SSA when they reach the age of 15. Once in the N-SSA they consistently place high on the list of the Young Skirmisher Award. More importantly, our youth are taught proper firearm safety and are prepared for the rigors of being a Skirmisher. The Youth Program had humble beginnings and now has grown steadily throughout the years. Currently we have 152 competitors within the system. This year alone, 28 competitors turned 15 and many have already joined the ranks of the N-SSA. This helps make the N-SSA a true family sport, bringing together generations of skirmishers in one place.

Registering a competitor is simple. All you need to do is have your team adjutant fill out the N-SSA Tenderfoot BB-Gun Registration Form that comes in your team’s regular registration packet. The most important pieces of information that we need are the competitors: name, date of birth, and a sponsor. The cost of the event is $1.25 for team, and $1.25 for individual competition. The deadline for registration is the same as the national registration deadline. The rules for Tenderfoot BB-Gun Competition can be found in Section 36 of the regular skirmish rules. If you are looking for more information, have any questions about this program, or are looking to volunteer, email me directly at josephplakis1@gmail.com.

The Least Competitive Competition Sport By: Steve Sheldon, 4th LA Delta Rifles

Many years ago, I used to throw darts. A buddy and I would show up at a local bar on Friday nights, where folks would throw darts for fun for an hour or so. Then there would be a luck-of-the-draw tournament that cost about $5 a head, with a payout for the top winners. When we were throwing for fun, man, I was on fire. But as soon as we started throwing for money, my dart game went to pot. I played a game of trying to figure out how much beer to drink to loosen up while not drinking too much to be too loose! I think a lot of the pressure came from having a teammate who was counting on you to do well so that they had a shot at winning, too. I remember one year I actually signed up for the league, and my first match I was so nervous I missed the entire dart board! I felt so bad for the guy who drew me as a teammate! I couldn’t handle the stress of competition. You’d think competitive shooting would be just as stressful, but not in the N-SSA! Why? Well the short answer is you have no idea how everyone else is shooting! Thus, there is no sense of competition while you are actually shooting – it’s just you and your target. In Individual competition, you post your target, shoot it, and away it goes for scoring. Unless you go out of your way to try and examine other individual targets, you have no idea how you have done compared to anyone else. So it’s easy to simply step up to the line, do your best, and let the chips fall where they may. The same goes for team shooting. Of course, it’s a little different then because you can tell how many of the targets you hit (or didn’t). But when I’m shooting team events, I’m always looking at the targets as a whole, because that’s what needs to be wiped away to “win”. To me, it’s all about “clearing the frame” and if we have done that, then that’s that – it doesn’t matter to me who hit ‘em as long as they are gone! And while you can cast an eye down range to see if other teams cleared their boards, unless you deliberately go nosing around the score table, you’ll have no idea how you did time-wise compared to everyone else. So, I like to call N-SSA shooting the “least competitive competition sport” because, while you are doing it, you have no idea how you are doing compared to everyone else. It’s not until they post the final scores that you find out where you stand, and by then it’s all over. And that takes all the stress of “competition” out of it for me. You’re really just shooting against yourself. It doesn’t feel like a competition when you’re just having fun and doing the best you can while shooting with friends!

MEET THE STAFF OFFICER By: Wayne Jordan Meet Chuck and Kathy Kindle from the Northwest Region. Although Chuck is the official Protocol Officer of the N-SSA, he and Kathy work on the duties of this office as a team. What does the Protocol Officer do? This is one of those obscure jobs that various of our members volunteer for, but which most people never think about and don’t even know exists. At each National Skirmish there are over a thousand medals, plaques, and trophies awarded that cover the multitude of team and individual competitions that take place. Someone needs to sort and label each of these medals ahead of time. Then, at the awards ceremonies on both Saturday and Sunday afternoons, these medals must be arranged and handed out in the proper order as each of the winners is called forward. In addition, the many plaques and trophies that are kept on display in the Historical Center must be gathered up, taken to the ceremonies, and also presented to the proper recipients. The Protocol Officer must be at the site of the ceremonies early to get everything set up, and stay afterward to get everything cleaned up and put away. Without the many hours of effort and organization by the Protocol Officer, the awards ceremonies would be a slow, confusing, and drawn out affair. Years ago the N-SSA used to pay someone $1.00 per medal to get them all labeled. It was expensive and in the end there was still a lack of organization. About 20 years ago when the subject of saving the organization money was discussed at a meeting, the Kindles offered to take over the labeling to help save money. But they quickly realized that the job didn’t end there. It only seemed natural to see to it that all medals and awards got to the rightful recipients in the most organized manner possible. And the next thing they knew, Chuck was made an official staff officer (probably to keep them from backing out of the unofficial job!).

Why would anyone want to do this tedious and time consuming job? Kathy says that is the general sense of accomplishment, and the satisfaction of helping the NSSA to operate well. She says it is even fun when they are finally at the point of handing the awards out to the winners. Kathy grew up in the world of skirmishing with her dad, who was an early member. Once she met Chuck, she roped him into skirmishing as well. They have always been members of the 111th OVI. The Kindles have been active in service to the N-SSA in numerous other ways over the years. Chuck is the current Northwest Region Commander and has served as Regional IG and Skirmish Director. Chuck and Kathy have both served as Team Commanders and Team Adjutants. Kathy also holds a distinction as being one of the original woman members of the N-SSA. Skirmishing is a family affair for the Kindles. Kathy has two brothers on their team. Their nephew, Brandon Bowser, and his wife, Kasey Jo Bowser, are also on the team and will perpetuate the family tradition of service as they are now taking over a large part of the Protocol responsibilities. Meet the Staff Officer or Committee Chairperson will be published in each edition of the Skirmish Line. The most recent N-SSA directory lists 31 Staff Officers and 21 Committee chairmen. This reflects the wide range of duties that must be performed to keep our organization running. Most of these volunteers are low profile people who work quietly behind the scenes, contributing an enormous number of hours of work to support the N-SSA each year. This series of articles is meant to bring them out of the background and share with our membership who they are and why they are in these jobs. 68

The Unsung Skirmisher By: Wayne Jordan “Let’s go find something else to do”. That is what one of Nick Taylor’s teammates on the 21st Virginia a/k/a Maryland Guard, heard Nick say during the afternoon of the recent National work skirmish. It had already been a long day, and most of the host team participants had already wrapped up and headed home. But as long as there was any work left to be done, Nick was not about to leave. He is a man who never stops moving. A skirmisher for the last eight years, Nick is retired from the Calvert Cliffs nuclear power plant. Before that he was a U.S. Navy submariner. He has run in marathons, including the Boston Marathon. He is also a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans.

Unsung Skirmisher - Nick Taylor 21st Virginia / Maryland Guard

Nick is an example of the skirmisher who always does more than his share. “He wants to, he has to, it really bugs him if he isn’t helping someone else out”, says another of his teammates. “If we are shooting on position one and we turn our backs on him, we’ll find him a moment later at position five helping a shorthanded team with time or safety duties. We can’t keep track of him.” The most famous “Nick story” is the time a fellow skirmisher was not feeling well and realized he’d left some medications at home. Before he knew it, Nick was in his car driving 2 ½ hours each way to the man’s home to pick up his medicines and bring them back to Ft Shenandoah in case they were needed. When Nick starts mowing the lawn in his campsite, he often keeps on going through neighboring campsites as well. At a regional skirmish, he is usually among the last guys off the range, not wanting to leave until there is no more work to be done and everyone else has left. “He has a heart of gold and he is always looking to use his endless energy to help his fellow skirmishers”, says another teammate. Nick Taylor, for exemplifying the best character traits of a true skirmisher, and always looking for ways to support his fellow skirmishers, you are recognized as the Unsung Skirmisher. The Unsung Skirmisher is a regular feature of the Skirmish Line. Each edition will highlight at least one N-SSA member who has done something above and beyond the call of duty for the benefit of the N-SSA and its members. It can be large or small. It can be a guest or family member. The purpose is not only to recognize these individuals, but to help motivate others to make that extra effort on behalf of their teammates and fellow N-SSA members. Be on the lookout for such an individual and nominate them for The Unsung Skirmisher column. Do you know someone who has given selflessly of their time for the benefit of others?
