Fall 2017
Skirmish Line
The Fall National is quickly becoming a memory and most skirmishers have finished skirmishing for the year. We have to congratulate the host teams, led by Skirmish Director Sherry Myers, for the great job that they did. The nationals are a great time to see friends, to compete, to shop for absolutely necessary skirmish items – like more Civil War firearms! – and to enjoy Fort Shenandoah. This fall, as we all prepared for the National, our world changed once again. Protests against Civil War history rocked our country and I felt a strong need to prepare for any protests at our National. Thanks goes to Gary Sheppard of Company C, 2nd United States Sharpshooters, for his work with local law enforcement to help us be ready in case of trouble. Fortunately, there was no trouble. I am very proud of the way the membership prepared for any protests. I am convinced that if protesters showed up our members would have behaved appropriately. As we look to the future we have some mountains to climb. We have to continually stress the need for all of us to recruit new members. I know that you have heard me say this before but this need is continuous. At least two of our teams have decided to merge with other teams for 2018 because they are too small to function on their own. I know that there are other teams that are considering folding due to the lack of members. Fortunately, we do have a number of teams that are growing. Perhaps someone on a growing team will write an article for the Skirmish Line giving hints on how to grow. We always have a need for money to continue our sport. Wayne Jordan has a positive campaign to raise money and every member should have received a letter from him and me asking you to consider donating to the N-SSA. We did very well last year with donations and we hope that this trend will continue. I hope that every member donates something; $5.00, $50.00, $500.00, whatever you can do will be appreciated and used to help the N-SSA. A dear friend, and my old boss, used to say “How can a dream come true if you don’t have a dream?” I am sure that many of you have ideas on how the N-SSA can be bigger and stronger. Instead of keeping your ideas to yourself, please share them with your team commander and your regional commander. Regional commanders should bring reasonable requests and suggestions to the Board of Directors and then the Board has the moral responsibility to seriously consider what comes before it. Our dreams for the N-SSA are only limited by our own imaginations. I challenge you to think about our future and let us know what you think we can do to improve the N-SSA. While many of us are getting ready for Christmas and the holiday season, the skirmish season is only a month away! The Snowball Skirmish will start the skirmish season on January 12-14, 2018 and the Deep South Region will have a skirmish at Brierfield, Alabama in February. So it is time to start getting ready for the 2018 skirmish season! I look forward to seeing you on the firing line! In Memory …. Tom Evans was a member of the WBR in the 19681970 time frame before he moved to California where he was instrumental in establishing the Civil War Skirmish Association, for which he served as Commander. Tom passed away on Sept. 20, 2017.
At the Skirmish hosted by Battery C, 1st Michigan Light Artillery every September in the Northwest Territory, they award a revolving trophy to a member of the NWT that is a non-marksmanship award. It is called the Robert “Bob” Scheele Spirit of Skirmishing Award. The criterion for this award is based upon just what the title implies: a member who exemplifies a true Skirmisher’s Spirit; someone who willingly helps anyone in the region with their equipment, travel, marksmanship skills, or whatever else is needed by helping make their general all around participation more fun and enjoyable. These were the qualities that Bob Scheele represented as a Skirmisher, and although Bob was a terrific marksman, he was also very generous with his time and expertise. His love for our sport never diminished, and even though Bob had been a Skirmisher for 40 years before he passed away, when watching him on the firing line or shooting next to him, based on his reaction you would have thought that each hit was his first one ever. His love for our sport was timeless. (Continued on page 6)

Ben Betterley has been posthumously awarded the Robert “Bob” Scheele Spirit of Skirmishing Award. In July, Ben Betterley passed away unexpectedly at the age of 39. Ben was born into a skirmishing family. His Grandfather, Mother and Father, three grand-Uncles, and several other members of his immediate family were members of the 1st Michigan Engineer’s and Mechanics, and Ben started his skirmishing career as a member of that unit as soon as he turned 15. When Ben married his wife Angel, she also married the sport of Skirmishing. Ben’s marksmanship abilities were apparent very early on with his winning of the Young Skirmisher Award at Nationals several years in a row. He also holds the record for the highest 50yard Musket score ever shot at a National Skirmish with a 99-1X. The only interruption of Ben’s skirmishing career was as a Marine when Ben served two tours of duty in Iraq. He was a member of three different teams in the NWT, and was the top shot on each of these teams in all disciplines, and I was fortunate enough to have been a teammate of his on two of those teams. A privilege and honor I will long cherish. There was, however, another side of Ben that truly warranted his receiving the Scheele trophy. Ben was quiet and unassuming, but he was always there in a time of need, regardless of what was needed. If someone had a firearm malfunction, he was right there with his expertise to help repair it and get that person back on the firing line for the next relay. If Back Creek was on the rise, you could count on Ben to help move campers to safety. He would do whatever it took in any situation to help anybody that needed it. That’s just the kind of man he was, and he never had to be asked. For those of us who knew Ben, his passing has been difficult, especially among his teammates of the 111 th OVI, as with all of those among the N-SSA family who knew him. But we also know that he would be the first one to say that we must not lose sight of the future of our sport, to safeguard it and do whatever is necessary to keep it viable. Every team in our organization has lost a near and dear member and although those losses are difficult to endure, the Spirit of those departed lives on with each round we fire down range and at each campfire where we gather. Each one of those dearly departed expects us to uphold the virtues that make being a member of the N-SSA such a privilege. Their passing also allows us to better recognize the value of each teammate and friend we have made as a result of participating in this great sport of Skirmishing. Those values that make up the basis of the Scheele Award cannot be exemplified any better than they were through the way Ben Betterley treated his teammates, fellow Marines, friends, and all the other N-SSA members and people he came in contact with. That is why Ben was so richly deserving of the 2017 Robert “Bob” Scheele Spirit of Skirmishing Award. From all of us my very dear friend, you will be missed, and never forgotten.

MATH WITH MORTIMER By: Selena Goodin Usually the sound of a mortar being shot is not followed by laughter, cheerful screaming, and whoo-hoos from a group of elementary or middle school kids. At Allison Woods Outdoor Learning Center, the site of the Carolina Region’s home range, students of all ages learn about math, energy, forces and motion, and properties of matter all by the firing of a N-SSA approved mortar.
other instructors give the lesson from a scientific perspective. Before shooting the projectile from the mortar, students make predictions on how high it will rise in the air and the distance it will go based on the amount of powder. Flags are put out on the range in 50 feet intervals so the students can visualize how far the projectile may go. Instructors then discuss how the black powder begins in a solid state, then turns to gas when ignited, which propels the projectile into the air. Kids in elementary school learn the difference between kinetic and potential energy. Instructors discuss how the projectile goes from potential to kinetic without ever losing the energy behind it. Students learn about graphing speed and distance when the projectile is shot. After the range is clear, students are able to measure the exact distance the projectile went and graph the data using a line graph. Teachers are given the data to take back to the classroom and expand on what they learned.
Known for continually thinking outside the box, Allison Woods Outdoor Learning Center’s staff and volunteers have created a popular program entitled Math with Mortimer. The program uses a Confederate mortar to teach kids about various topics covering their essential standards in science. N-SSA members Dave Jackson and Selena Goodin along with Instructors Dennis Goodin, T.J. Melvin, and Paige Jackson give students a lesson in history and modern mathematics they will never forget. It’s not unusual for the Allison Woods Outdoor Learning Center to have 200-400 students per week pass through the gates. The kids range in ages from Kindergarten through Graduate School. During their visit, depending upon the number of students in the group, they are allotted 4 programs for the day which usually run 45 minutes each; however, when the Math with Mortimer program is requested, only 3 programs are given. The assembly program, for all students, is held at the airstrip where students are safely positioned behind the instructors to ensure that all safety measures are followed.
Also included in Dave’s mini lesson is the history of the technology he is using. He states that the main use for mortars being used was to lob projectiles over walls to attack the enemy on the other side. Dave uses the National Anthem “...the bombs busting in air…” to give students a mini lesson on the song in relation to the mortar. Sometimes the kids will sing along. Dave explains that the mortar was used as a siege gun to shoot over fortifications and that the projectile would explode in the air to send shrapnel raining down on the enemy. It’s amazing that most of the students do not understand the impact that the mortar had in the war, and it opens their eyes to what may have happened during that time.
While preparing the kids for the upcoming program, Dave Jackson, being the Veteran Skirmisher that he is, gets the kids excited by giving a mini history lesson behind the projectile and the mortar. After Dave’s lesson, he and the
Our mission is to ignite life-long curiosity, understanding, and respect for nature through education. Math with Mortimer sparks the students’ curiosity to learn and expands their knowledge of mathematics with a historical twist. This has become an increasingly popular program and students are very excited about it. For additional information about the Carolina Region, visit carolinaregion.net. MEET THE STAFF OFFICER By Wayne Jordan
Meet Robert Lee Hodge, the N-SSA Living History/Re-enactor Officer. Here is how he describes his responsibility – “My task is to basically encourage reenactors to consider joining the N-SSA. I am creating a template to use to introduce reenactors to N-SSA at one of the upcoming national shoots. We need to provide them with a warm and positive experience at this proposed recruitment event, and hopefully add a reasonable level of new shooters from the effort. “On occasion I think reenactors and N-SSA are akin to Spain and Portugal – they are neighbors that have a lot in common, but they speak two similar, yet different, languages.” Robert Lee has been reenacting since 1981 and has gravitated toward authenticity in the reenactor/living history world. He has been recognized in various circles for his commitment to the preservation of history and life as it really was. If you’ve ever read the book Confederates in the Attic, written in 1998 by noted war correspondent Tony Horwitz, then you have already been introduced to Robert Lee. The book review on Amazon refers to the author’s time with hardcore reenactors and says – “in the book's climax, Horwitz takes a marathon trek from Antietam to Gettysburg to Appomattox in the company of Robert Lee Hodge, an eccentric pilgrim who dubs their odyssey the ‘Civil Wargasm.’” The book is well worth reading. Robert Lee has put on preservation-based events that have generated over $160,000 to help save battlefields from becoming Wal-Mart parking lots, and has also organized a large reenactment in Spotsylvania, VA that drew over 400 reenactors and 10,000 spectators.

Robert Lee has been a member of the 1st Maryland Infantry for eight years, but had been a frequent guest for 25 years, drawn in by the fife and drum music. Their campsite is known for being full of authentic huts (in Area 2 across from the Caretaker’s house), and their commitment to keeping it real during a skirmish weekend. He enjoys showing reenactors around the campsite and showing them the extremely authentic reproductions of various styles of rebel soldier dwellings that are modeled after those seen in period photographs taken in Centreville, VA and other Confederate camps. He also introduces guests to N-SSA members who have a wealth of knowledge about the history and culture of the times, such as Les Jensen, Mike Burkey, Dean Nelson, Jerry Coates, and others. In fact, Robert Lee himself finds that “The wealth of knowledge that many N-SSA members have is fascinating, stimulating. and rewarding. I feel like I should get a college credit every time I leave Ft. Shenandoah”. As with many of the volunteer staff officers and committee chairs, Robert Lee was drawn into his position by looking around and seeing a need that he could fill. He says he was concerned by our need for new members and began to think of the future of the N-SSA. He felt that the work put in by the N-SSA leaders and members since 1949 has been pretty impressive, and he wants to do his part to make sure that the organization is preserved for the future, much as the battlefields and other historic sites and events must be preserved. The programs he is implementing are a challenge, but he is putting his experience and creativity to work to get the links to the reenactor world established. Showing that the N-SSA offers both a strong element of authenticity as Camp of the First Maryland, CSA well as the period weapon live-fire competitions should appeal to a wide L-R Waylon Pashong, Tom Kuhn, Unidentified, Isaac Forman, swath of people who are interested in our Civil War and have an interest Michael Clark, Tim Cole, Adam Ward, Alex Kuhn, Brent Feito, Robert Lee Hodge. Photo by Robert Szabo. in participating in historical activities. “Hearing the sounds of live-fire cannons, muskets, rifles, etc., en masse, is a paramount attraction to the N-SSA. There is no other place in the world where you can hear some of the roar of what a Civil War battle could have sounded like than the magnitude at N-SSA.” Robert Lee is married with no children, but does have five rescue dogs. He refers to himself as a Civil War obsessive-compulsive type. Since he was four years old, the history of the war has been his primary hobby, but he also has an interest in classical art, cinema, dogs, humor, and music. He likes being part of a unique history-based subculture that promotes responsible gun ownership and is very family friendly. Having the permanent campsite at Ft. Shenandoah, as opposed to a temporary site at a reenactment, is also a big draw for him. And he is always happy to meet more historians at a skirmish. Brent Feito and Robert Lee Hodge. Meet the Staff Officer or Committee Chairperson is a series that will be published in each edition of the Skirmish Line. The most recent N-SSA directory lists 29 Staff Officers and 17 Committee Chairs. This reflects the wide range of duties that must be performed to keep our organization running. Most of these volunteers are low profile people who work quietly behind the scenes, contributing an enormous number of hours of work to support the N-SSA each year. This series of articles is meant to bring them out of the background and share with our membership who they are and why they are in these jobs.
Alcoholics Anonymous Meeting Friday evening from 6-7pm in the lower level of the Historic Center This is an open discussion meeting which will meet at each National Competition at Fort Shenandoah. If you have, or think you may have, a problem with drinking, you’re welcome to attend. My name is Larry M., and I am a recovering alcoholic for 21 years. JOIN THE N-SSA SOCIETY OF COLOR BEARERS
Help Us Raise Our Participation Level! We all want to see a strong N-SSA that endures for years to come and for many generations to follow. This is the time of year when many people will review their good fortunes in the year that is coming to an end, and share with their favorite charities. Please consider the N-SSA to be one of those recipients of your largesse. For many of us, skirmishing is no less a part of our lives than our schools, churches, and other non-profit charities that we have been supporting with periodic donations. The N-SSA is supported by dues and fees that are based on a yearly budget. But the future of an organization like ours is secured by annual giving from its members and associates, and by long term planned giving. The Society of Color Bearers is our recognition society that lists annual donors. The new N-SSA Legacy Society is our recognition society for people who have included the organization in their estate plans. Last year, generous monetary donations from our members were equal to approximately $7.00 per member. And we’re just getting this program started. This can help keep our dues from rising, which keeps our organization accessible to prospective new members. Donations are usually unrestricted and go into a fund to be used by the Board as they see fit. But donations can be targeted to a specific use, large or small, for the benefit of the N-SSA and its members. If you have any idea for such a donation, please talk with National or Regional officers about it to see if it is feasible. There is no shortage of projects available for a donor to sponsor within the N-SSA, ranging from installing benches or plants, to sponsoring activities and awards, to helping build or expand structures on association property. Can you take a look at your finances today and see if you might be able to join this effort? Any size donation counts and gets you listed as a Color Bearer. Any check dated by December 31 will be logged in as a 2017 donation and that will be reflected on the receipt letter that is sent back to you. We’ll also send you a decal for your camper, gun cart, or vehicle to show your support for the N-SSA. It would be nice to see a lot of those decals on display at skirmishes.
PLEASE USE THE ATTACHED RETURN ENVELOPE TO SEND IN YOUR DONATION. The North-South Skirmish Association is a 501 c 3 organization and is able to accept tax deductible donations. If you have any questions about how to help the N-SSA with charitable gifts, please contact Wayne Jordan, Charitable Giving Officer, at wvjordan@aol.com.

Some Easy Ways to Support the N-SSA Below is a summary of giving strategies that our members might consider implementing. Regardless of your financial position, there is probably a way for you to contribute. BUY THROUGH AMAZON SMILE – Do you ever buy products on Amazon.com? Sign in by using smile.amazon.com and designate the North-South Skirmish Association as your charity. Amazon will donate a small percentage of each purchase to the N-SSA. They send us the money quarterly, and sometimes it adds up to hundreds of dollars. Just make sure that every time you use Amazon, you see the mention of Smile and the N -SSA at the top of the page. MAKE A TAX-FREE GIFT FROM YOUR IRA ACCOUNT – If you are 70 ½ or older, you must take a certain amount of money out of your IRA accounts (Required Minimum Distribution, or RMD) and be taxed on it whether you need it or not. This can push you into a higher tax bracket, raise the cost of your Medicare, and can cause loss of some of your deductions as well. But if you still must take money out, you can have it (or a portion) sent directly to a qualified charity, like the N-SSA, and avoid all those problems and the taxes on it as well. For some people this can be very significant. SET UP A DONOR ADVISED FUND – The average family can now have its own equivalent of a charitable foundation. Brokers like Fidelity and many others set these funds up and allow anyone to become part of it for a tax deductible donation of as little as $5000.00. Your money is immediately deductible, but it goes into an investment fund for future (or current) use. When you are ready, you can have funds in it distributed to a qualified non-profit of your choice, such as the N-SSA. This is a great tax planning tool, especially for someone who received a financial windfall during the year and is concerned about the tax ramifications. UTILIZE EMPLOYER MATCHES – Many companies, mostly large ones, will match your donations to a qualified organization like ours which essentially doubles your donation. As an example, Dominion Power has sent over $10,000 to the N-SSA through this program. This only happened because an employee who is a skirmisher took the effort to ask them to match his donations. For that matter, Dominion has donated other services and materials to the upkeep of Ft Shenandoah, again because an employee asked them to. VARIOUS ASSETS CAN BE CONTRIBUTED – Cash, stocks, bonds, bank accounts, brokerage accounts, life insurance policies, annuities, and just about anything of value can be donated to the N-SSA, either now or as part of an estate plan. Some of these things can be done easily by just signing a beneficiary form. Others need to be mentioned in a will, or by a non-binding letter left for your executor. And there are much more complicated strategies involving trusts, illiquid assets, and other situations that require the help of an attorney and/or professional planner. N-SSA LEGACY SOCIETY – Consider adding the N-SSA to your will and filing a Declaration of Intent with the organization. Even if you want to do this by nonbinding letter to your executor, file the form with us so we can help sort things out when the time comes. A bequest is a way to have a lasting impact on the people and places that matter to you. For more details on these strategies for tax efficient giving, refer to the articles in the Skirmish Lines from the last couple years, and also watch for articles in upcoming editions.

2017 Fall Nationals
The NRA Senior Skirmisher Award By: Wayne Jordan At each National Skirmish, the N-SSA awards the top two musket shooters age 65 and older with the Senior Skirmisher Award. It is based on their aggregate individual musket scores.
The winners in the Fall 2017 National are Dennis Heuer and Marty Rogers. Dennis Heuer, with a Musket Aggregate score of 184-03X, is a member of the Dismal Swamp Rangers. He started skirmishing in the 1960s by proudly carrying his Dad’s equipment, posting his targets, and then spotting shots for his dad. By 1968, Dennis was a member of the Tammany Regiment, 42nd NY Vol Inf. His first musket was a .58 Zouave. A few years later he switched to a 3-band Springfield with a Weis barrel that he still competes with today. He also shoots carbine, smoothbore, repeater, and pistol. In 2004, Dennis moved south to Virginia and traded his blue uniform for gray with the Dismal Swamp Rangers. He is looking forward to receiving his 50 Year Award next Spring. He is a retired army officer, former Virginia Department of Transportation employee, and still works as a consultant in transportation engineering. Currently his sister, Dianne Heuer, is a skirmisher, but she still shoots with a yankee team. Their father passed away last year after a lifetime of skirmishing. Dennis is also an avid Harley Davidson rider. He has been to Sturgis, ridden in Europe and earned the coveted Saddlesore 1000 Award from the Iron Butt Association (yes, this is real). This entailed a ride from Chesapeake, VA to Bangor, Maine in one day. He also co-chaired an International Motorcycle Safety Scan as he led a group of safety experts on an extensive ride through five European countries to study new approaches to infrastructure design that reduces motorcycle fatalities. A man of many talents, Dennis also is a golfer, scuba diver, pilot and former skydiver. Marty Rogers, with a Musket Aggregate score of 182-01X, is a member of the Iredell Blues (4th NC State Troops) and lives in the Statesville, NC area. She and her husband, Jim, have been skirmishing since 2003. Marty says she started shooting simply because, “It is more fun to shoot than it is to watch.” She shoots all the small arms in individuals, and all but the Henry in team matches. She has served as her team’s Paymaster for about 10 years now. Marty has an interesting background, with famous Americans as ancestors going back through several family lines. Most notably her 4th Great Grandfather was Chief Justice John Marshall, a Virginian. “I feel like I am coming home when I come to Winchester because of my ancestors that lived and are buried there – some of their homes still exist, including one that is now a Bed and Breakfast”. She has a degree in Animal Science from NCSU and her best friends have ”four legs and fur”. Any final comments, Marty? “I love Southern history and am an ‘Unreconstructed Rebel’!”

2017 Fall Nationals The NRA Young Skirmisher Award By: Wayne Jordan At each National Skirmish, the N-SSA awards the top two musket shooters age 18 and under with the Young Skirmisher Award. It is based on their aggregate individual musket scores. These two skirmishers will have their National dues paid next year by the sponsors of the award. This is one of many programs the N-SSA has been putting together to encourage young people to join and remain part of our organization.
The winners of the Fall 2017 National Young Skirmisher Award are
Colin Scanlan and Michael Clark. Colin Scanlan, with a Musket Aggregate score of 162-00, has now won the Young Skirmisher Award in two consecutive Nationals. Still only 14 years old, he is the youngest skirmisher to ever win this award. He has been a member of the 1st Maryland Cavalry since the beginning of this year where he is mentored by his parents, Tim and Katie Scanlan, and his grandparents. Colin has been competing since he first entered the BB Gun match at age 4. Currently his goals are to compete with a wide variety of guns, and to get his individual scores up. Michael Clark, with a Musket Aggregate score of 157-00, is 16 years old and has been skirmishing for two years. He is a member of the 4th Virginia Infantry of the New England Region along with his parents, Walt and Denise Clark. Mike shoots a Richmond musket that his dad built for him, and also shoots an original Model 2 Maynard carbine, smoothbore, Henry, and is picking up the revolver. He started shooting in the BB Gun matches years ago. Of the four Young Skirmisher winners each calendar year, two of them are sponsored by Chiswell’s Exiles, and one by Mosby’s Rangers. There is currently one sponsorship available for a new sponsor to adopt. The NRA also lends its name to the sponsorship of these awards, and provides the plaque listing the names of the winners. The awards were presented by Dave Booz, N-SSA National Commander, and Philip Schreier, NRA Museum Senior Curator. Sponsorship of the dues was started four years ago by the N-SSA Youth Foundation, and has been taken over since then by other team sponsors.

The Unsung Skirmisher By: Wayne Jordan This edition’s Unsung Skirmisher will highlight the Photography Corps of the N-SSA. This group of volunteers preserves an enormous number of events with their cameras. Many of their photos are published in the Skirmish Line and many others are used in various publications to publicize the N-SSA. During a typical National Skirmish, these people will put in a multitude of hours of effort and submit thousands of photos. As with any volunteer organization, various people come and go, so this article will attempt to cover the currently active photographers. Ericka Hoffmann of the Dulany Troop, 6th Virginia Cavalry, is the National Photography Officer. Every group must have someone in charge to make sure that all the assignments get distributed and covered, and that is her responsibility. Several years ago, Ericka teamed with Todd Harrington and Phil Spaugy to build a pool of photographers that would ensure good coverage of all events without all the duties falling on one person. This also brings a variety of perspectives and styles to the catalog of photos that will preserve our organization’s history. Ericka looks to Niki Bethke for her talent for photographing people and to Marylou Wells to document the costuming events and provide accompanying information. Ericka sees herself and Walt Zdon as the “sports photographer” types (Ericka enjoys getting shots of artillery firing). Lis Cole and Terianne Cary have taken on the BB Gun and Revolver events. Ericka says, “We have a great group, and I’m very happy with everyone’s technical and artistic abilities, and all the work they put in to cover the various events. I couldn’t do all this without them”. In addition to using these photos in the Skirmish Line, Ericka teams with Bruce Miller, the N-SSA Public Information Officer, to get photos and articles placed in various other publications like The Artilleryman Magazine, Civil War News, the Winchester Star, etc. She will be expanding her efforts to cover the N-SSA website, social media, and she looks forward to working with Melinda Shaw on recruiting projects. Photography has been a big part of Ericka’s life since she was nine years old and bought an old box camera that took 620 film at a school auction for $1. She then graduated to using instamatics and eventually 35 mm. In junior high she started taking pictures at sports events and was mentored by a teacher and an uncle. In college Ericka studied photography and did an internship in biomedical communications which included a lot of photography. Years later she was visiting Fort Shenandoah to see what skirmishing was all about and had her camera out, which got the attention of a former Skirmish Line editor. She joined up shortly afterward and already knew that photography would be her way of giving back to the organization.
Ericka is responsible for a multitude of duties. She must make sure that all awards ceremonies are fully photographed which includes both Saturday evening and Sunday afternoons at Nationals, as well as opening ceremonies. There are quite a lot of teams and individuals receiving various awards and she must keep track of all of them. She must also arrange for the various volunteer photographers to cover many events taking place. If there are outside reporters or film crews visiting us, she often will escort them and help them find the best things to photograph or film. Why did she take this responsibility on? As a new member of the N-SSA, it opened many doors for her to get to know the organization and many of its members. Given her background with photography, it was a natural step for her. “I like to have fun when I take people’s pictures, especially the group shots. I get them laughing and joking around and then get the most relaxed pictures” she says. On the other hand, the worst part of the job is the week after a Nationals when she gets home and has to catch up on domestic chores and her job, but must also wade through thousands of photos that she and her staff took, pick the best ones, get them labeled, and submit them to the Skirmish Line and any other publications or destinations. Outside of skirmishing, Ericka’s other hobbies are playing guitar and singing, caving, and kayaking. 64

Skirmish Line
Marylou Wells covers the Costume Contests and related workshops, and also contributes a variety of candid shots. She is a member of the 3rd US along with her husband, John, and has been coming to skirmishes since 1993. She is an accomplished seamstress and has been making period clothing and competing in the costume contest from the beginning. Since she was already taking photos of the costumes, when she heard that volunteer photographers were needed, she stepped up. Marylou thinks it’s important to promote costuming, share information, and document the research and work that the competitors have put into this activity. It can take hundreds of hours of research and sewing to complete a period dress. Another hobby that she is involved in is Clog Dancing. Walt “JR” Zdon has enjoyed photography all his life. He likes to photograph skirmishers on the firing line, and also various candid shots around camp. Walt minored in photography in college, back in the days when he had to process his film in the darkroom. He also attended college in part on a scholarship he won at an international shooting competition. As a skirmisher, Walt has been a member of the 2nd Maryland Artillery since 1986 where he shoots a wide variety of weapons but favors his Henry. He shoots photos sometimes with a 400 mm lens that makes him feel like a sniper. Walt’s job is as a Ballistics Technician where, “I get to shoot and blow stuff up every day.” Lis Cole has been with the 12th Pennsylvania for over 10 years, along with her husband, David. She has been involved in photography and similar artistic pursuits since she was 16 and was happy to be able to contribute to the N-SSA by doing something that she enjoys so much. She is a professional graphic artist and currently works mostly on freelance projects. Lis has published and sold her works and enjoys sketching and a style of art called pointillism. As a skirmisher, she enjoys shooting her Maynard carbine and being part of a cannon team. Niki Bethke seems to be everywhere around camp, and always has her camera with her. About ten years ago she took up the hobby of photography and says, “I like to capture all kinds of moments.” This makes her quite valuable when it comes to documenting life as a skirmisher. When she heard a few years ago that Ericka needed help covering all the events at a Nationals, Niki decided she would enjoy helping plug the gaps. She is a member of the 3rd Maryland Artillery along with her husband, Rob, and numerous other family members, and is currently shooting musket and smoothbore. Niki also is an all-round “crafty girl”. Among other things, she likes to make handmade note cards, and she likes to “artify” handmade boxes. Terianne Cary is new to skirmishing. She’s been coming to Fort Shenandoah from her home in Michigan for the last two years with her boyfriend, Paul Spaude, of Chiswell’s Exiles. Having met Ericka and Niki and seen them running around trying to cover so many events, Terianne offered to help out. Since she is not a shooting member, she has more flexibility in her schedule which allows her to back up the other photographers when things get hectic. In her role as an official N-SSA photographer she has had the opportunity and access to become very familiar with a wide variety of the aspects of skirmishing, and to meet many different people who participate. Over the years she has learned the art of photography through experience and from Skirmish Line

picking the brains of more experienced people. In her professional life, Terianne is the owner of a business that started out as a microfilming business and has largely transformed to document scanning business. Like photography, this “helps to maintain memories.” She also is a committed participant and advocate of Cross Fit training and does a lot of volunteer work in her community. Ben Harris, Jr. has been taking pictures for a long time, starting when he was a kid with a Brownie camera, and graduating to a 35 mm camera when he joined the military. He is currently a 30 year member of the Dismal Swamp Rangers, and before that was with Mosby’s Rangers, together totaling 48 years in the N-SSA. Ben used to shoot every weapon that was available and liked his Zouave musket, Smith carbine, and Remington revolver. Due to health issues, he has not been shooting recently, but that has led him to spend more time on photography. “I enjoy the people, enjoy the competition, and am always happy to find a way to give back to the N-SSA for all the joy it has brought to me and my family over the years.” Ben likes to capture the artillery in action with his camera and also finds taking candid (un-posed) shots to be fun and interesting. He also took all the photos of skirmishing patches that he used in compiling his book of patches commemorating skirmishes throughout the history of the N-SSA. In fact, he is now working on another book of skirmish patches. Ben also does volunteer work as a historian in Gloucester County, VA where he lives and where 14 of his ancestors who fought in the Civil War were from. He is currently working on a book about his home county during the war.
This is a regular feature for the Skirmish Line. I will need the help of the membership to make it work. In each edition of the Skirmish Line I would like to highlight at least one of our members who has done something special for the rest of us. This could encompass a wide variety of actions, but the common thread will be that this person (or persons) has made a special effort to do something above and beyond the call of duty for the benefit of the N-SSA and its members. It can be large or small. I need our members to be on the lookout for such an individual and his/her good deeds and send me the information about the person and what he/she did. If possible send me a photograph as well. It could even be a pair of people or a group of people. And it will be published here. Now, who can nominate someone else for our next issue? Do you know someone who has given selflessly of their time for the benefit of others? Contact me at wvjordan@aol.com, or call me at 703-407-2445. 66

Deep South Region August Skirmish Results By: Steve Sheldon The 3rd and 44th Georgia teams co-hosted the last skirmish of the year at the Brierfield Ironworks Park on the weekend of August – 27th. The event also capped off the end of summer, though despite the overcast skies it did not quite feel like it as temperatures and humidity levels were high enough to warrant no uniforms for the weekend. 25th
The range opened on Friday afternoon for individual competition. Saturday morning started off first thing with our latest Deep South tradition – the morning Revolver match. As usual, the entire match is held at only 15 yards which makes the event fun for everyone. Three 3-man teams competed with the Forrest Escort coming out on top for 1st place. After the revolver match the field was set back up for individuals, which ran until around lunch time. Team shooting got underway in the afternoon, starting with the Carbine match, after folks grabbed quick burgers, Polish sausage dogs, and soft drinks from the concession stand. Six teams competed in five courses of fire, four of them being shot at 50-yards with the final round at 100-yards. In the end, the Forrest Escort A team took first place, the 20th Georgia took second, and the 4th Louisiana came in third. The final event of the day was the Smoothbore match. Five teams competed in four courses of fire, with three of them 25-yard events and the final one 50-yards. Again the Forrest Escort A team came out on top, with the 44th Georgia coming in second, and again the 4th Louisiana bringing up third. Sunday morning began with Opening Ceremonies, and then the Musket match got underway. Six teams competed in 5 courses of fire, again with 4 shot at 50-yards and a final one at 100-yards. The 4th Louisiana held a firm lead until the 100-yard event, where the Forrest Escort A team came ahead to again take first place. The 4th LA took second, with the 44th Georgia taking third. After cleaning up the field, the medals were awarded and folks headed home to ready guns and ammunition for the last Deep South skirmish of the year – the November match hosted by the Forrest Escort in Eva, TN the weekend of November 3-5. Deep South November 3-5, 2017 Skirmish Results By: Steve Sheldon The Forrest Escort hosted the last skirmish of the year for the Deep South Region at its usual location, the Nathan Bedford Forrest State Park in Eva, TN. The weather was unseasonably warm this year, and while the rain held off for most of the weekend, the gloomy skies and falling leaves made everything look like fall even if it didn’t quite feel like it yet! The weekend started off Friday afternoon with the range opening up for individual target shooting, which continued on Saturday through lunch. The warm weather contributed to a veritable swarms of ladybugs and ground hornets. It was a touch…distracting…to be on the line concentrating on your target only to feel some critter drop down your shirt collar. You couldn’t help but wonder if your new-found friend was a ladybug or something more exciting! After lunch on Saturday the competition switched over to the team matches, starting with the Carbine match. Turnout was great with 11 teams on the line! When the smoke cleared the 110th Ohio Volunteer Infantry had taken first place, followed by the 46th Illinois in second, followed by the 114th Illinois in third. The Union clearly carried the day in carbine shooting! Next up was the Smoothbore match with 9 teams on the field. While still being dominated by the 110th OVI, the Deep South had a better showing with its pumpkin-throwers when the 14th Mississippi took second place and the 4th Louisiana took third. Saturday evening found everyone at the lodge for at least half a dozen pots of chili of all different kinds, with all the fixings and dessert besides! After everyone was well-fed, the award ceremony was held, with the Individual, Carbine Team, and Smoothbore Team medals handed out. Sunday morning we elected to ignore the time change in favor of getting out on the field earlier so folks could get a headstart on heading home. We had a brief opening ceremony, and then eleven teams again took to the field for the Musket match. Once again the 110th Ohio Volunteer Infantry carried away first place, followed by the 46th Illinois in second. The 14th Mississippi put in a good showing for the Deep South Region by taking 3rd. We in the Deep South Region hope everyone has a safe and joyous holiday season and we look forward to seeing everyone back at Brierfield Ironworks Park on February 16-18th for the opening skirmish of the 2018 season! REGIONAL NEWS - Potomac 115TH POTOMAC REGIONAL
September 8 - 10, 2017 Host Units: Washington Blue Rifles, 12TH Regt US Regular Inf By: Colonel RD Freeman, USMC (W.B.R.)
This write up is unique in that it’s coming from the perspective of helping to host a Potomac Regional. For those “uninitiated” with hosting a shoot, all that can be said is that you’re sorely missing out on a unique experience that compliments a skirmisher’s overall understanding, and appreciation of our sport!
In recognition of their sustained and dedicated efforts to the region with the BB Gun matches, Mark Elton and Robin Hildebrant received the highly coveted John C. Carrol Service Award. Kudos to the Skirmish Director, Davy Crockett, and everyone else who participated in hosting this regional. Tim Scanlan deserves recognition as well for his continuous service to the association!
Personally, I had a ball. Despite not being able to shoot, I enjoyed working in various facets on the host staff. From doing so, I was happy to see hundreds of fellow skirmishers From the Commander: “Teams must ‘follow through’ with enjoy a safe, worry free, and competitive skirmish. ALL new members regarding their roles & responsibilities on Weather-wise, “beautiful” describes it all. Many skirmishers the line, esp. new team captains. Also, to avoid recruits noted how surreal it felt not being rained upon, or flooded from getting discouraged - ensure that they are proficient in loading ammo and maintaining their arms in order to avoid out, during a Potomac Regional! fouls on the line. Great work on those teams getting new/ On Sunday morning our friend, brother skirmisher, and young members! PLEASE keep up your efforts, we need National Deputy Commander, Wade O.
