By the time you read this, the skirmish season will be well along. The spring national was one that I hope we do not have to repeat as far as the weather was concerned. The host teams, led by Bobby Hannula, did a masterful job working under difficult conditions. Our Emergency Operations Officer, Chester Lauck, was a major help as we needed to make decisions regarding the weather. The Gainsboro Fire Department was also a big help.

Thanks to all of these folks. While the weather conditions were difficult, almost all of the skirmishers were cooperative and supportive as we had to move campers and find temporary places for hundreds of displaced folks.

This is an election year for the N-SSA. The current national officers are running un-opposed.

I hope that this means that the membership is satisfied with the national officers. In addition, many regional commanders will be up for re-election in the fall. I encourage people to run for office. We all have a duty to do whatever we can to make the N-SSA a better and stronger organization. We always need more skirmishers to step up and serve in any way that fits their talents. Just as we all need to recruit new members to join our ranks, we also need to serve so that the N-SSA is around for our grandchildren and their children. Just as we need skirmishers to step up and serve, we need the financial resources to continue to function. Wayne Jordan has had several articles about members donating to the N-SSA and this effort has resulted in over $20,000 in donations.

We need this effort to continue.

The August Board of Directors meeting will be held the first weekend in August at the Kernstown Battlefield. We will be meeting literally on the battlefield! If you have never been to a Board meeting I encourage you to try to attend. You really should see your Board members at work. Each member receives a package of materials before the meeting and are encouraged to share that package with their regions in order to get input so that regional commanders can make informed decisions. By the time you read this, your regional commander should have shared the Board package with you. In the package there is a motion to limit regional commanders to three consecutive terms. National officers are already limited to two consecutive terms. If this passes, it will eventually cause more members to serve on the Board. There is also a report with suggestions to revise the schedule at our nationals. Over the years much has been added to the schedule but nothing has been deleted. At the Board meeting, discussions are held and decisions are made that greatly affect all skirmishers so if you can make it to any Board meeting, I strongly encourage you to do so.

As we move forward we face many challenges. The climate in our country concerning history and firearms is not friendly to our hobby. We must have leaders who can see the big picture and plan for the future. We need to have members who are willing to serve. It is essential to recruit new members and keep those who are already on the rolls. I am sure that you can come up with other concerns. Can we overcome and succeed? I am certain that the answer is “yes�! Together we will make the N-SSA even stronger than it is now. I look forward to your input and involvement. I will see you on the firing line!

2018 National Officer Candidates On the next few pages, you’ll find the nominations for National Officers which were received by the Chairman of the Nominating Committee, Robert Hannula. Candidates are presented in alphabetical order by office. Please take time to read and evaluate each candidate’s information before voting.

Candidate statements are included as received - contents have not been edited, except for layout consistency.

In accordance with current N-SSA by-laws: ARTICLE III:

OFFICERS

SECTION 1 The officers of the Association shall be the President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Inspector General, and Executive Secretary. Except for the Executive Secretary, the officers shall be elected by the membership from members in good standing of member organizations for terms of two (2) years, or until their successors are elected. Beginning in 1994, no one shall be elected to the same national office for more than two consecutive terms. The Executive Secretary shall be appointed by the Board of Directors and serve at the pleasure of the Board. Officers elected by the membership shall receive no compensation except the reimbursement of bona fide expenses incurred on behalf of the Association.

The six officers shall be known as National Officers, and, except for the Executive Secretary, shall be eligible to vote on all matters coming before the Board of Directors.

SECTION 2 Officers and their duties are as follows: PRESIDENT, having the title of COMMANDER, shall preside over meetings of the membership and the Board of Directors; be a member ex officio of all regular and special committees (except the Awards, Nominating, and Election Committees); perform all the duties usually pertaining to the office of President; perform other duties as may be assigned by the Bylaws.

VICE PRESIDENT, having the title of DEPUTY COMMANDER, shall perform all duties of the Commander in his absence or at his request; perform other duties as may be assigned or directed by the Commander.

SECRETARY, having the title of ADJUTANT, shall conduct official correspondence at the direction of the Commander or the Board of Directors; keep records of Association business, except as delegated to the Executive Secretary; maintain a roster of national and regional officers, committee chairmen, and staff officers; perform other duties as may be assigned by the Board of Directors.

TREASURER, having the title of PAYMASTER, shall perform normal duties of treasurer; collect all dues and other funds paid to the Association; serve as custodian of all Association funds; write checks in a manner prescribed by the Board of Directors; keep an accurate record of all funds, and submit an accounting of same to the Board of Directors; submit records for auditing when so directed; be bonded for malfeasance and misfeasance in an amount set by the Board of Directors.

The INSPECTOR GENERAL shall inspect to determine that participating individuals and organizations at National Skirmishes comply with the Skirmish Rules; inspect probationary organizations at National Skirmishes, and make recommendations as to their qualification for membership to the Board of Directors. appoint assistants from among the members, if necessary, to assist him in the performance of his duties.

PERSONAL BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

• Member of the N-SSA for forty three years • Married to Barbara Booz for 45 years, two sons, five grandchildren • Retired after thirty years in public education as a history teacher, department chairman, football and lacrosse coach, high school assistant principal, high school principal for sixteen and a half years • President, and co-founder of Carroll Lutheran School for three years • Associate professor of Education and History at Carroll Community College in Westminster, Maryland for three and a half years • Executive Director of the Friends of the National Parks at Gettysburg for one year • Adjunct Professor in Civil War Era Studies at Gettysburg College for twelve years • Vice president of the Maryland Arms Collectors Association for six years • President of the church council of St. John Lutheran Church in Fairfield, PA for seven years CANDIDATE’S STATEMENT: Over the last two years I have tried my best to help lead the N-SSA. I have spent many, many hours listening to individual skirmishers to help deal with their concerns. I have stressed our need for recruitment and that each and every one of us must be involved in keeping the N-SSA alive and strong. We need to stress the absolute need for more of our members to volunteer to fill elected positions and to serve on committees. There is always a need for new blood.

As we go forward we need to assess the schedule of our national skirmishes to better serve the ongoing needs of our skirmishers. As our membership gets older we are need to do whatever we can to make sure that we can continue to skirmish.

I have asked our Program Officer to chair a committee to assess the national schedule and to bring recommendations to the Board of Directors in August. Input from individual skirmishers and teams is always welcome.

We live in a very difficult time for our nation and for our sport. We need to make sure that people realize that we are responsible firearms owners and that safety is paramount in our activities. We honor our ancestors on both sides of the Civil War and stress that we are all part of a unified nation.

If re-elected I hope to continue our efforts to recruit new members, try to expand the number of ranges that we can use across the country, and continue to maintain our standards. For the vast majority of us the friendships that we have made in the NSSA are extremely important and we want the opportunities to be together to continue. Together we can continue to skirmish and help to make our sport healthy for many more generations. I thank you for the support that you have given me during these last two years.

I have been assembling the national medals for the last 22 years. I also filled in the position of the current Deputy Commander, after the untimely passing of Wade Huffman.

I believe I represent a different perspective and generation of skirmisher which can benefit the N-SSA in a leadership position. We now have a very active recruitment program and presence in the shooting and outdoors community but more importantly, an effective system to follow up with potential new members and attendees of these events. MEET THE STAFF OFFICER

Meet Brian “BJ” Evans, the National Safety Officer for the N-SSA. This is his fifth year holding this position, and he is the first person to hold it. It came about when Steve Light proposed to the National Board that we should have such an officer and he wrote the proposal and rules for that position. An announcement was made at the Potomac Regional meeting that the new position needed to be filled, Brian threw his name in, and the next thing he knew, he was approved by the Board.

The first thing Brian did was review all bylaws and safety rules to determine what needed revising, what was obsolete, and what was missing. He says, “I don’t revise any rules for the sake of revising. I’m using my observations from walking up and down the line, especially during the last eight Nationals. I look for things needing improvement or change. I look for Brian “BJ” Evans repeated bad habits, like improper ramming. In my opinion, some things need to be removed N-SSA National Safety Officer in order to streamline the process and focus on the truly important safety issues.” Obviously, in today’s world more than ever, it is extremely important to our organization that any and all firearm injuries be prevented.

All it takes is one simple mistake to jeopardize our insurance coverage and the very existence of the N-SSA.” Brian’s been a skirmisher since 1974. His dad was with the 13th Confederate and Brian grew up with that team. He’s been casting bullets and reloading since he was 10 years old. He has also been the Potomac Region Inspector General, was one of the co-founders and commander of his current team - the Dulany Troop, and a Range Support Officer at a National.

Why take on this job? Brian says that, as he’s aged, he feels a little less competitive than he once was, so he decided to channel more of his energies into new ways to help this organization that he has enjoyed being part of for so long. He enjoys working with other staff officers and the skirmish host staffs. It’s interesting to observe different approaches to putting on skirmishes, and he gains insights from the variety of skirmishers he interfaces with as to how to get tasks done and how to contribute positively to the improvement and building up of the N-SSA. Brian enjoys giving the safety orientation in the morning at Nationals, and helping the line safeties set the tone of a friendly and organized skirmish. He likes to see the volunteer firing line monitors enjoy the job and be well-prepared to create the best atmosphere for everyone on the line. Of course, it’s no fun dealing with a situation “when someone is fired up” after being called on a safety violation. “National safety officers and the various Inspector Generals are not here to take punitive actions. These people are here to keep all shooters safe and should be considered as a resource. They sometimes see things that an individual skirmisher does not realize is happening, like not pointing a muzzle far enough away from their hands and face, or the guy next to them not following the safest procedures. Everybody makes mistakes, but there is no room for mistakes on the firing line.”

Brian’s wife, Joanne, also skirmishes with him. Together they share a hobby of restoring vintage Jaguars, including engine rebuilds, bodywork, interiors, etc. He considers shooting to be a huge part of his life and has shot high power and small bore, but they don’t compare to black powder musket shooting. He shoots a 2 band Parker-Hale that he estimates he’s put about 50,000 rounds through over the last 40 years. He also likes his Sharps carbine and will, on occasion, shoot revolver or be part of the cannon team.

Any final comments or memories from his many years of membership? “The first one that comes to mind,” he says, “goes back to when I was a kid in the ‘60s and we were at a skirmish at Fort Lee. An enormous rock fight broke out among the kids who were there. By the time we were done, the place looked like the aftermath of a Middle East battleground. But that was in the old days. We try to be safer now.”

Support the N-SSA through Charitable Giving IRA REQUIRED MINIMUM DISTRIBUTIONS (RMD) THE BEST WAY TO AVOID TAXES AND HELP THE N-SSA If you are turning 70½ this year, or already have, you probably know that you must take a taxable distribution from your traditional IRA, 401k, or many other retirement accounts. Tax laws being as they are, this can create a very complicated situation which can trigger several additional taxes.

There are some ways to minimize this impact. Wrinkles in the tax code can cause people in all income ranges to be penalized heavily for taking their Required Minimum Distributions (RMD), even those with modest incomes.

An extra infusion of income from your retirement account may cause a big increase in the taxes you pay on Social Security income, can raise Medicare benefits cost, and, of course, raise your Federal, state, and local income taxes. At the upper income levels, a distribution can push you into a very high tax bracket and even cause you to pay the Medicare surcharge. In a convoluted way, our tax code can have the effect of causing a situation akin to double taxation on some of your income, which can lead to a big shock when you prepare your income tax returns and find out how much you owe the government.

A SOLUTION TO BEAT THE TAX MAN – In a rare moment of constructive sanity, congress passed a law a few years ago allowing people to donate their RMD, or any portion of it, directly to a 501(c)3 charity like the N-SSA. It is quick and simple and avoids all of the taxes listed above. It’s a no fuss, no muss process - just do it once and you are done - no more tax issues to deal with on that money. You may think this is no better than taking your distribution, then making your donation later and deducting it on your taxes. But for many people the mere act of receiving your distribution first triggers the other taxes, leaving you to make sure you can make the most of the itemized deduction for your subsequent donation. Many people find that process backfires on them.

So, If you are thinking about supporting the N-SSA with a charitable donation and you haven’t yet taken your whole RMD this year, consider donating some of it to the N-SSA now. Just call your plan administrator, custodian, bank, or broker and ask them to help you do this. They work with this all the time and should be able to take care of this with minimal effort.

Since that article was written, the new tax law has been passed making this program of direct donations of RMDs even more likely to be of value to you. Also, be aware that everyone’s tax situation is different and the benefits one person may receive from this sort of donation will differ from other people’s benefits. But there is no downside to using this method of making a donation.

The NRA Young Skirmisher Award By: Wayne Jordan At each National Skirmish, the N-SSA awards the top two musket shooters age 18 and under with the Young Skirmisher Award. It is based on their aggregate individual musket scores. These two skirmishers will have their National dues paid next year by the sponsors of the award. This is one of many programs the N-SSA has been putting together to encourage young people to join and remain part of our organization.

The winners of the 2018 Spring National Young Skirmisher Award are

Michael Clark and Colin Scanlan.

These two competitive young men have reversed their standings from last fall when Colin took 1st Place and Mike claimed 2nd Place.

The awards were presented by Philip Schreier, Senior Curator, National Rifle Association of America Museums / Field Editor, American Rifleman and David Booz, N-SSA National Commander.

Mike has been training for this all his life starting with BB guns, then moving on to .22 caliber and shotguns. His first black powder shooting was done with a Pennsylvania rifle his dad built for him, and he performed well in both NMLRA matches and New York State Territorials.

Mike’s goal is to become a good, consistent shooter, but he enjoys the camaraderie and friendship of the N-SSA family more than anything.

Mike’s mom, Denise, tells a story about Mike’s first skirmish in 2016. She has a video of Mike and his dad shooting side by side. From the back they look the same – tall and thin in the same uniform 1st Place NRA Young Skirmisher Award and same hats. The video shows them Michael Clark moving as if one person, both making the 4th Virginia Infantry same exact movements at the same Musket Aggregate Score of 176-02x exact time. They load in unison, shoot simultaneously, lean over to their scope at the same moment, and straighten up to reload together. “I call them my twins, 36 years apart!” she says. What more could a parent ask for?

The NRA Young Skirmisher Award Colin has been a Young Skirmisher winner in all three Nationals he has competed in. “I shoot good groups in bad places,” says Colin on the Sunday of Nationals. He then shows me a picture of a recent target on his phone. There it is, a tight group of shots straddling the 9/8 rings at 12 o’clock. He’s disappointed in it. I think the expert level shooters in the N-SSA better start looking over their shoulders because this kid is gaining on them fast. He says that being the son of Tim and Katie creates a challenge, but it motivates him to practice and try to keep up with his dad, who is his primary mentor. Colin also credits other skirmishers, like Scott Harris and Erick Shaw for giving him good advice, especially about how to pace himself.

Colin’s favorite weapon is his original 1842 Mississippi. He wants to start shooting the new single shot pistol match.

Living at Fort Shenandoah gives Colin a lot of opportunity to practice and excel, and he enjoys being there. He says, “Honestly, I’m just grateful for the influences and people I’ve grown up around.” But he has a few outside hobbies as well. He plays the baritone saxophone in his high school band and is learning several other instruments as well.

Of the four Young Skirmisher winners each calendar year, two of them are sponsored by Chiswell’s Exiles, leaving the other two available for sponsorship. The NRA also lends its name to the sponsorship of these awards, and provides the plaque listing the names of the winners. Sponsorship of the dues was originally started by the N-SSA Youth Foundation.

Senior Skirmisher Award By: Wayne Jordan

At each National Skirmish the N-SSA awards the top two musket shooters age 65 and older with the Senior Skirmisher Award. It is based on their aggregate individual musket scores.

The winners of the 2018 Spring National Senior Skirmisher Award are

Dennis Heuer and Paul Davies.

Dennis shoots both a Zouave and a 3 band Springfield and, over the years, has preferred to use a service load of 60 gr of FFg powder. After 45 years of shooting, he has switched from open sights to a peep sight (while keeping the open rear sight for a backup). The peep has caused his point of impact to change and he adjusted that by lowering his powder charge to 52.5 gr of FFg. Long ago he learned not to chase the point of impact by filing his sights. Dennis 1st Place Senior Skirmisher Award emphasizes the need to use quality Dennis Heuer equipment. He likes his Weis Dismal Swamp Rangers barrel with a .580 bore. He shoots Musket Aggregate Score of 180-02X a Lyman .575213 old style minie sized to .577, using a homemade sizer from a portion of Kentucky longrifle barrel. Dennis also emphasizes the need for using pure lead and knowing for sure the source and type of lead he uses.

Lastly, he likes his Redding powder measure which gives him a very consistent load. When shooting, Dennis considers proper foot placement to be very important. He lines up on target, closes his eyes, relaxes, and when he opens his eyes he adjusts his feet, if necessary, to line back up on the target. “I am not fighting my muscles when I line up on target,� he says.

Senior Skirmisher Award Paul has been skirmishing since 1972. The first ten years were with the 149th PVI, after which he moved over to the Washington Blue Rifles. He was introduced to the sport by an old friend from elementary school who still skirmishes, Chris Litvinas. In that time Paul has won many shooting medals, but is most proud of his revolver aggregate score of 192, which is the highest on record. He also has enough DSSA points for silver status. Paul shoots an Austrian Jaeger musket loaded with a 600 gr wadcutter bullet and 48 gr of Goex powder.

Paul is retired from 38 years of government work, including being the point of contact for the Department of the Navy’s disposal services. When he worked, he lived in Falls Church, VA. He now resides in Carlisle, PA. He has two sons and two daughters. Paul is also an author and can be found researching in the National Archives, among other places. His published books are entitled C S Armory in Richmond, and U S Guns of World War II. Paul has also served on the N-SSA Small Arms Committee for about 30 years.

Costume Committee of the N-SSA The Costume Committee welcomes all that wish to compete in the costuming competition or attend the workshop held at each Nationals.

TOP GUN – MUSKET By: Wayne Jordan At the 137th Nationals in the Spring of 2018, Charlie deCourcy of the 9th Virginia Cavalry placed first among all skirmishers in the individual musket competition with an Aggregate score of 189-6x, comprised of 97-4x at 50 yards, and 92-2x at 100 yards.

Charlie has been a skirmisher since 1985, a few years after he moved to Woodstock, Virginia, after bouncing around New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Colorado.

The first new friend he made in Virginia was Mark Hughes, and Mark had to work hard for three years to drag Charlie to Fort Shenandoah and see what a skirmish was. It was worth the effort. Charlie says he looked at Mark and exclaimed, “You mean I could have been doing this for the last three years!?!?” And he’s been shooting with the 9th Virginia ever since.

Black powder was not new to Charlie. He’d been shooting roundball, both flintlock and percussion, already. He credits Larry Brockmiller, whom he’d met at the roundball matches, for setting a high bar of competitiveness for Charlie to follow.

Top Gun Charlie deCourcy Charlie shoots a ’55 Whitney Derivative musket, which was one of several 9th Virginia Cavalry versions that Whitney manufactured. He likes the rear sight on it which is slightly farther forward than most sights. He shoots a 510 gr Old Style Minie sized to .577 with 43 gr of Goex 3F powder. He is not sure of the actual bore size but finds that .577 is the largest size bullet he can possibly use in it. He likes his Hoyt barrel with 3 lands and grooves. He tried a barrel with 7 lands and grooves, but did not feel it performed as well. As for his bullet, he experimented with a wadcutter once. He shot both types of bullets at the same target to compare them. He says Tim Scanlan came by and took a look at the target and saw that all the shots were good but that the wadcutter wasn’t grouping as well. “Tim looked at me and asked why on earth I would want to be changing bullets. I dropped the wadcutters and have stuck with the old minie ever since,” says Charlie. Apparently, that was the right decision. He did make a major change once, though. “I started with a 3 band musket but then I saw the 2 band Whitney and liked the rear sight better, especially for its long range sight and I switched to it.”

To what does Charlie attribute his successful shooting? There are numerous answers. “I have my struggles just like everyone else,” he says. First of all, he thinks he has good stamina, which he attributes to his full time job in construction as a contractor and carpenter. That leaves him in good condition for holding a musket up for as long as he needs to.

Despite that conditioning, he is struggling with the onset of arthritis in his trigger hand. Age has also started taking a toll on his eyes and he has started using reading glasses when shooting. “The target gets a little fuzzy, but I can see the front sight.” Speaking of sights, Charlie used to use orange paint on his front sight, but as his eyes aged he started looking for a better way and found that a black sight started looking better to him. He now uses a carbide lamp to blacken his sight, as do many of his teammates. He found that nothing else will give the same total black sight with no glare. “It gives me the most precise and sharp site picture you can get,” he says. The only downside is that it is a little harder to see in low light.

Charlie is constantly evaluating every move he makes when shooting. “The mechanics are important, as is consistency in my approach to a shot,” he says. Occasionally, he finds a reason to make a change, though. For twenty years he held the ramrod in his hand while shooting since that saved the time of setting it down and picking it up for each shot. Then he noticed he wasn’t holding the stock of the musket as firmly as he should while also holding the ramrod.

After all, when shooting individuals, that time saving does not matter. And he is now more comfortable shooting in team 68

matches with his hand only having to grip the stock.

“Lots of trigger time is essential,” Charlie says. “Mark Hughes and I would shoot paper targets until there wasn’t a speck of black left on them.” He likes to shoot individual targets at each skirmish just to make sure he knows where his musket is shooting on any given day. Too many factors, especially differences in light, will cause variations in the way he needs to sight in on a target and he wants to be ready for shooting under the conditions of the day. “Always watch that front sight. And be able to call your shots. You should know when the shot goes off where the bullet is going to hit. I use a scope when shooting individuals, but my goal is to just use it on the first few shots. If I feel comfortable that I’m shooting well, I won’t bother with the scope for the subsequent shots,” says Charlie. Last of all, he says to control your mental game. Don’t let your prior shots or targets weigh on your mind. Just concentrate on the shot you are taking now. He also says that he struggled for a long time to “pair” his 100 and 50 yards targets. Too often one was good and the other was not. But he has slowly conquered that - on most days.

Charlie is joined on his team by his son, Matt, who is 29 and has been shooting since he was 15. His wife, Carole, and daughter, Dawn, are often behind the line cheering them on. He also likes to hunt. His favorite game is deer, turkey, and even bear. He lives on 70 acres in Shenandoah County and can shoot in his own yard. But even still, he likes to join Mark Hughes at his backyard shooting range nearby.

Any final comments? “I’ve been chasing the Felker Trophy (for top musket aggregate) for 33 years now and I can finally check it off my bucket list. Previously it had been on another list I keep which rhymes with bucket.”

“I also want to commend the outstanding sportsmanship and character displayed

by Eddie Schneeman, a fellow competitor and friend who was the previous winner of the Felker Trophy for top musket aggregate. When the results were posted on Friday of Nationals, we both had a score of 189-06x, and Eddie had edged me out on the tie breaker. So close to winning, but not quite. But Eddie had doubts about whether one of his tens was also really an X, so he filed a protest. An unusual protest, to say the least. The stats officer doublechecked and found that indeed Eddie only should have been credited with 5 X’s. Correcting that mistake put me in first place. It is a great honor to win that trophy and I’ll always be proud of it. Without the honesty and integrity displayed by Eddie, it would not have happened. He is a credit to the N-SSA and I’d like to think that he exemplifies the character of all skirmishers.”

The Unsung Skirmisher By: Wayne Jordan At a recent skirmish I went down to the range to shoot individuals, and I parallel parked along the creek side of the road around position 15. When I got out of my car I found another skirmisher standing between a car and the bushes along the creek bank with a small pair of pruning shears in his hand. He was walking along the side of the road and cutting back all the branches of the bushes that lined that side of the road. He said he didn’t want people who parked along the road to have their vehicles scratched up by those branches. Who is this guy?

Meet Todd “Hessy” Hess of the 2nd Maryland Artillery, a member since 1987. In that time Todd has been a dedicated member of the N-SSA who cannot sit still. “Todd has always gone the extra mile to help and volunteer wherever he is,” says his teammate, Walt “JR” Zdon. “When he is on a host team, he takes on his position with a load of steam that will not burn out. He loves to accomplish a task while he’s at the fort.”

So, what all does Todd do besides clip bushes? He has taken on many official jobs as a skirmisher including National Logistics Officer, Logistics and Stat House officer at regional and national skirmishes, and various team positions such as commander and paymaster, just to name a few. In fact, as the Stat House officer at a recent Nationals, Todd had the individual scores posted by 2 pm Friday afternoon, an unheard of feat. But his penchant for going above and beyond is what really distinguishes him. According to Jeremiah Walsh, Todd always wants to keep busy and wants his teammates to stay busy as well. They may be working as a host team, but Todd will find plenty of extra projects for them as well. Jeremiah says, “One weekend he knew that the latrines needed some masonry work done around the cleanouts, so the next thing we knew Todd was mixing concrete and recruiting us all to help him complete the job. Another time he drafted us to help rebuild the steps on the NRA building. If there is no major project for him to do, he’ll start sweeping out the barn or find some other miscellaneous task that needs doing. His truck is a rolling tool chest and he is quick to put those tools to work. And then he goes back to our campsite and cooks the team a chicken dinner with all the fixins on Saturday night at Nationals.”

Unsung Skirmisher

Todd “Hessy” Hess 2nd Maryland Artillery

But Todd doesn’t restrict his energies to skirmish weekends. As his teammate “Mr. Carl” Soine aged, Todd would just show up at his house and mow his lawn. When Jeremiah’s daughter got engaged, Todd got ordained so he could perform the marriage ceremony. But that wasn’t enough for Todd. The wedding was to take place on a farm and Todd spent his free time for months working on getting that farm in the best shape he could for the wedding. And he would never dream of accepting anything in return. There seems to be no limit to what he will do for his skirmishing buddies. In fact, Walt says that Todd loves seeing friends from other regions who he only sees at nationals. He knows many fellow skirmishers, not just by name; he knows all about them. And he can’t wait to update his teammates about who he has run into. That enthusiasm brightens up everyone’s day.

Somehow Todd finds the time and energy to shoot, too. He has shot on twenty A-1 champion Henry teams, and shoots most other small arms as well. He also finds time to deer hunt. He’s proud to have his grandson, Kyle, shooting with the team (and winning one of the Young Skirmisher Awards last year).

Todd Hess, for being one of the N-SSA’s Energizer Bunnies, and for contributing in a thousand different ways to helping make skirmishing more fun for your fellow skirmishers, you are this quarter’s Unsung Skirmisher.

This is a regular feature for the Skirmish Line. I will need the help of the membership to make it work. In each edition of the Skirmish Line I would like to highlight at least one of our members who has done something special for the rest of us. This could encompass a wide variety of actions, but the common thread will be that this person (or persons) has made a special effort to do something above and beyond the call of duty for the benefit of the N-SSA and its members. It can be large or small. I need our members to be on the lookout for such an individual and his/her good deeds and send me the information about the person and what he/she did. If possible send me a photograph as well. It could even be a pair of people or a group of people. And it will be published here. Now, who can nominate someone else for our next issue?
