I hope that all of you are doing well and looking forward to a great holiday season. Hopefully, many of you will find gifts under the tree this year that are skirmishing gifts! Who would not want a new musket, carbine, smoothbore, or revolver; after all we cannot have too many! As I reflect on this past year, I think we have had many success and some heartaches. The heartaches center around the empty chairs; those skirmishers who have passed on and are no longer with us. Most of us were touched by the loss of someone this year and hopefully we can cherish the memories of that person. We also miss those skirmishers who have retired from the ranks or have left for other reasons. I sincerely hope that some of those who have left will be able to return in the near future. Our successes have been many. During 2019 the N-SSA saw a reversal in the decline in membership as we took in new members in every region. We still must recruit; every member must try to bring in new members. This need will never go away. New members bring new ideas and new energy to our ranks. We had many great skirmishes and the competition at our nationals was very keen. One of the greatest pleasures of being commander is to give out the medals to the winners at the awards ceremony at each national. I love to see the looks on so many of our skirmishers’ faces as they come up to receive their medals. The look of happiness and of pride is wonderful. I have gone to skirmishes in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and North Carolina and have seen the same joy on skirmishers as they compete, and in many cases, win medals. What will our future be like? I know not everyone will agree with me, but I believe we can look forward to more growth and successes in the future. Naturally, we have to work to make that prediction come true. We have to be aware of the political changes going on in our country and act to preserve our sport. We have to have volunteers to fill the leadership ranks and to serve on committees. In 1961 John F. Kennedy said, “Ask not what your country can do for you, but rather ask what you can do for your country. I have always believed this and have tried to apply it to my actions. If you believe that the N-SSA is important to you, you should step up and help in some fashion. I also recognize that some members have reached the point where they have served long enough and now need to rest. Next year will be an election year for the N-SSA and many positions will be open. We always need new blood on the Board and on committees. Every region is in the same boat, and I know that many teams are also. We also need to look at our national skirmish and see if the schedule should be altered. Many of you filled out an electronic survey regarding the future this past fall and we shall see the results at the January Board meeting. Together, we will succeed! Just as a winning musket team needs its members to work together, we will work together to help the N-SSA move into the future. Thank you. Dave Booz National Commander

In Memoriam The Passing of Jim Baird, Paymaster of the N-SSA As I announced on the N-SSA Bulletin Board this past month, our long-time Paymaster, Jim Baird, passed away unexpectedly on November 12, 2019. Jim was married to Sandy Baird for 51 years and they have a son, Jamie, and two grandchildren, Matthew and Madison. Jim was a veteran and served in Viet Nam, earning a Bronze Star with the 101st Airborne Division. Jim was a skirmisher for almost 40 years and was a member of several different units during that time. He certainly enjoyed the competition and comradery of the N-SSA. At our recent fall national, Jim was the skirmish director. He stepped up and took the place of Wade Huffman when Wade passed away. Jim understood the need to “give back” to the organization and he served for 19 years as the Paymaster of the N-SSA. Without a doubt, he did a superb job as our paymaster. He handled all of the investments, the savings account, the daily, weekly, and monthly bills, and made sure that we were in good standing with all government agencies. He protected our financial reserves and ordered all of the materials we need for our national skirmishes. Whenever I needed an update on our finances, Jim was able to provide that update quickly and in such a way that anyone should be able to understand it. At Board meetings, Jim was always on top of the finances as members made motions that affected his domain, and he counseled us on how to use our money in the Board meetings. He was quick to analyze how different motions would impact us and stood up for his belief that we always have to be financially conservative. Jim and I spoke a few days before his passing concerning a sensitive matter and we talked about what we would be doing next year; that conversation has stuck with me. The N-SSA was extremely fortunate to have Jim Baird as our paymaster for so long. His efforts will have a lasting positive effect on our organization for a long time. A Celebration of Life will be held in the spring. Donations in Jim’s name may be made to the following: North-South Skirmish Association PO Box 218 Crozet, VA 22932-0218
James (Jim) Garland Baird Jr, 75, of Christiansburg, VA passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday November 12, 2019. He was born in Richmond, VA and raised in Staunton, VA. He graduated from Wilson Memorial High School in Staunton, VA then attended Virginia Tech where he received a BS in accounting. Jim served in the US Army with the 101st Airborne including a tour in Vietnam. During his service he was awarded the Bronze Star Metal, the Army Commendation Metal, Good Conduct Medal, and the TET 69 Counteroffensive Metal. He had a passion for the nonprofit organization, the North-South Skirmish Associating where he was a member for almost 40 years, served in numerous positions, and was currently serving as the organizations Treasurer. Jim was predeceased by his father, James Garland Baird and mother, Martha Baird Young. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Sandra (Sandy) Collins Baird; a son Jamie Baird; a Grandson Matthew Baird; and a Granddaughter Madison Baird. A Celebration of Life will be held at a future date.

The Unsung Skirmisher By Wayne Jordan
Have you noticed the first latrine building in Area 4 of Fort Shenandoah recently? It stands out. In this edition of the Unsung Skirmisher I am going to profile a large group of people who came together to do something very special for the teams that use that facility. There are too many individuals to name them all, but I’ll name as many as I can. For now I’ll just refer to them as the 1st Pennsylvania Rifles “Bucktails”, and the 111th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. These two teams have campsites side-by-side and a strong relationship. The latrine building near them was like many of the others, but they decided they wanted something much nicer. They transformed the building and its surroundings. I was stunned when I stopped to post some flyers on the Bulletin Board on the building and saw what someone had done to it. So, I asked Tim Scanlan how this happened and he sent me to these two teams.
Doug Walter is the team commander of the Bucktails so I started with him. He says that two or three years ago both teams were sitting around the campfire at a Nationals and Chuck Kindle of the 111th suggested that they make a few improvements to the bathroom facility. Doug agreed and suggested that they partner on the project. I don’t think they really knew what they were getting into. Some projects start out slow and expand greatly. We all know what these latrines are like. They serve their purpose, but they aren’t a place you look forward to visiting. In this case they had a slippery and worn boardwalk leading up a short slope to each entrance, and the old kitchen sink urinals (which some people have mistaken for dishwashing stations). And with the passage of time it just needed some general maintenance. Prior to this Kathy Kindle had started putting paper towels in the restrooms and keeping them stocked, and a few other people added their personal touches as well. But now it was time to get serious. Numerous ideas were kicked around at the next campfire and the project began to take shape. The 111th people are fairly far away and mostly just come down for Nationals, but the Bucktails are closer and come here more frequently. So, the Bucktails said they’d take on most of the labor and the 111th offered to help with planning and financing. At this point I’ll mention that this whole project cost the NSSA next to nothing as these teams provided all the labor and materials except the paint which is a standard color and Tim provided to them. He also helped with some other aspects of the project. No one kept track of all the various expenses and donated items, but these volunteers certainly contributed over $1000 of materials plus all their hours of labor. Where to start? In 2017 they got down to work, a little bit at a time during numerous skirmishes. They painted the building inside and out. But first, the whole building needed a good thorough cleaning (Continued on page 7)

before they could get to work. One of the first steps was to send their top Spider Wrangler, Kara Walter, in to clean out the webs and various living guests who had taken up residence in the building. No spider stood a chance against her. Once she made it safe for everyone else, they removed and cleaned, repaired or replaced numerous items such as light fixtures, toilet seats, hinges and other small fixtures. The partition walls outside each entrance door were refurbished, as were the bulletin boards. They also added a wall shelf. That was the easy part of this project, but they were just getting going. The next question was what to do about the walkway to the entrances. The boardwalk just wasn’t cutting it. Numerous ideas were kicked around. Then Alan Martin, who works for an electrical company, came up with the winning idea. He identified a type of patterned paver that electrical utilities use when moving heavy trucks and equipment on to certain worksites and need solid ground to hold the weight of the equipment. They weren’t cheap, but they were just right for this job – durable, attractive and non-slip.. This phase started in 2018. It took a lot of work to dig out the pathways to the entrances, lay down a solid and even bed of gravel, install the pavers and fill in the remaining spaces. Sam Wehr oversaw this part with the eye of a perfectionist. The final result is a work of art. They did this for both the ladies and the men’s entrances, and the area under the hose bibs on the outside wall. Before the year was out, Tom Martin acquired and installed a vanity on the ladies side, and his wife, Brenda, installed curtains for the windows. As the 2019 skirmish season got rolling, they were back at work. They removed the kitchen sinks and replaced them with actual urinals. In the process Tom, Doug and Lynn Rebert replaced much of the plumbing as well. One older member said that it was getting harder to get up from the seats, so Chuck went out and bought grab bars which the Bucktails then installed. Meanwhile, the exterior was getting a makeover. This was Tom Martin’s personal project. Beginning in late 2018, he dug beds and planted flowers and shrubs outside both entrances. This all built on some early plantings that Linda Klutas had done. Although the project could be called complete at this time, it never really will be. Doug is looking into installing solar lights over the bulletin boards and the doorways, for instance. Who knows what they will come up with next. The restroom building now looks like something out of a Better Homes and Gardens magazine. Bob Klutas sums up the project as follows, “It really doesn’t take much money and the time isn’t bad if you spread it out. Now it feels nice to know that we have a clean and comfortable facility available for people to use.” He continues, “I tried to donate the old kitchen sinks to the N-SSA museum. These things are legendary and part of the organization’s history. But the donation was turned down.” Kathy Kindle says, “We are very proud of our work. We consider it to be one of our ways of giving back to the organization that we love.” Other comments heard around the 111th campfire include, “We hope this will be an example for others of what a group of people can do to help improve N-SSA facilities and make people more comfortable at skirmishes.” And one voice called out that, “People are starting to walk farther to come to use this restroom building instead of the ones closer to their campsites.” Both teams have received lots of positive feedback on their work, and have received a few (Continued on page 8)

tokens of appreciation in the form of cases of beer and other libations. The Iredell Blues were so impressed that they donated some money to help with ongoing maintenance of the facility. Rumor has it that guided tours of the newly refurbished latrine facility will be given daily at Nationals at 11, 2, and 5 pm. This project is an excellent example of the dedication that many skirmishers bring to our organization. More people worked on this project than the ones named here, and I can only apologize for not being able to gather up all your names. The N-SSA runs on the efforts of hundreds of volunteers who offer their time to make the organization and its facilities exist and improve with the passing years. There are countless ways that individuals, teams, or other groupings can pitch in and make a difference. If you have an idea, speak up. Some of the best ideas come from the grassroots of the organization. You can make good things happen. 1st Pennsylvania Bucktails and 111th Ohio, for going above and beyond the call of duty with your creativity and labor for the benefit of the NSSA and its members, you are the Unsung Skirmishers. This is a regular feature for the Skirmish Line. I will need the help of the membership to make it work. In each edition of the Skirmish Line I would like to highlight at least one of our members who has done something special for the rest of us. This could encompass a wide variety of actions, but the common thread will be that this person (or persons) has made a special effort to do something above and beyond the call of duty for the benefit of the N-SSA and its members. It can be large or small. I need our members to be on the lookout for such an individual and his/her good deeds and send me the information about the person and what he/she did. If possible send me a photograph as well. It could even be a pair of people or a group of people. And it will be published here. Now, who can nominate someone else for our next issue? Do you know someone who has given selflessly of their time for the benefit of others? Contact me at wvjordan@aol.com, or call me at 703-407-2445.

MEET THE STAFF OFFICER By Wayne Jordan Meet ED THOMPSON and BOBBY HANNULA. They are co-chairs of the Long Range Planning Committee established by the N-SSA Board of Directors earlier this year. Both names should be familiar as they are both Regional Commanders and National Board members. Ed is the Chesapeake Region Commander, and Bobby is the Central Virginia Regional Commander. They have volunteered to take on a task of great importance to all of us.
So, what exactly is the committee’s mission? Bobby speaks first, “We are to come up with ideas and plans that think years or months down the road for the betterment of the N-SSA.” He says that the first step is to come up with rough ideas that can be submitted to the Board. The next step will be to hash out the specifics for the ideas the Board decides to pursue. Meanwhile, Ed states that, “Our mission is to think ahead to ensure the N-SSA has positioned itself the best it can to remain a viable organization.” He adds that with shooting sports and history both being out of the mainstream now, we need to find ways to demonstrate the positive sides of what we do to gain new members and even to keep current ones.
Ed Thompson
Dave Booz asked both of them to serve on this committee, obviously thinking that they both had the qualities, commitment and experience within the organization that positioned them well to handle this project. They’ve held responsible positions and served the members well over the years. Bobby says that, “As a member of the Board for eight years I have approached all subjects from a fiscally responsible approach as well as an open mind when reviewing subjects for the betterment of the N-SSA.” As they get the committee ramped up, they have two priorities on the top of their minds. Ed emphasizes getting the word out that the committee exists and that they need input from the membership. Bobby continues by saying that they are always open to someone’s idea, no matter what it is. And he emphasizes that many times an idea that doesn’t quite work in the beginning can evolve into something that is quite valuable. You never know what initial suggestions might generate more ideas from more people and lead to solutions that otherwise would not be found. So, no one should be shy about offering their suggestions, nor be discouraged if their exact idea is not used. How does their partnership on this committee work? To be honest, they say, they are still working that out as they move forward. They have discussed ideas and used each other as a sounding board. Once they focus in on a viable idea they move forward with the person who first generated the idea taking the lead. As it develops into a proposal they work on the final form together and will submit it to the Board. What are some of the early items they are evaluating? Ed says they are addressing subjects that range from facility improvements to range acquisitions and improvements, to the overall Nationals program and scripts. One project that is being researched now is the possibility of bringing in shower trailers for use at Nationals. How many people would find that to be a valuable addition? And as with most things the issue of providing showers is much more complicated than initially meets the eye. Where do you locate it, what about the water supply and wastewater, how do you publicize it and get buy-in from the membership, how do you weigh the costs and benefits, etc., etc. Why not build a shower building? Fortunately, these guys are thorough in their research. It seems that adding permanent showers to the Fort Shenandoah property would change our classification for real estate taxes to a more expensive category. Ed and Bob both emphasize the need for input from the membership. They can’t think of everything, nor know what is important to everyone. Ed would like to get a survey out, and hopes that members will take a few minutes to send him their thoughts. They have both spoken to many skirmishers about a myriad of issues facing the N-SSA including older (Continued on page 13) 12

(Continued from page 12)
veteran members and young members with families to try to find out what issues are most important to them. How to recruit and keep new members is obviously a prime subject and they want to make sure that once someone is recruited they will not have reason to leave. Bobby emphasizes that input from any and all sources is welcomed and also would be happy to have a few skirmishers join the committee to broaden the viewpoints and perspectives as they work through this. Either one of these guys can be contacted at any time. Their emails are listed in each Skirmish Line under Board of Directors, and they will also be happy to talk with you by phone or in person. They both attend skirmishes frequently, mostly at Ft Shenandoah but sometimes at other locations as well. Ed Thompson has been on the 21st Virginia Infantry a/k/a The Maryland Guard for 19 years. Most of that time he has been Team Commander, as well as a Regional Skirmish Director, Ordnance Officer at Nationals, Deputy Regional Commander, and Chesapeake Regional Commander. His wife is Stacy and his daughter is Bobby Hannula Virginia, but they do not shoot yet. His cousin John Hopf is on his team. Ed is a longtime member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans and is descended from a Great Great Grandfather who fought with the 55th Virginia and survived the war despite two serious wounds. He plays softball and cornhole, hunts deer and waterfowl, and participates in various shooting sports. He shoots just about every small arm that we use in competition, but favors his musket with his smoothbore running a close second. Bobby Hannula has been a member of the First Valley Rangers since he joined in 1993 at the age of 15. He has served in numerous positions including Adjutant, Paymaster, Deputy Commander and Commander of his team. He has also served in several capacities on the national level including Deputy Statistics Officer, Assistant Signal Officer, Election Committee Chair and Skirmish Director for the 137th National. Bobby has a six year old daughter named Abby, who he is hoping will skirmish some day, and who also motivates him to try to keep the N-SSA strong for the long term. His father used to skirmish before health issues made him stop. He spends most of his time working on N-SSA related activities, and finds that his team is his family and that skirmishing provides him with more good friends than most people will ever have. If he has a weakness it is that he is not by nature an outgoing person when meeting new people, but he will step up and help out with just about anything that is needed within the N-SSA. Bobby competes with all firearms except the single shots. His favorite is the Henry due to its fast pace, closely followed by his musket. Ed looks forward to hearing what the membership has to tell him, and making proposals to the Board based on that feedback. Bobby says the best part of this assignment is having the opportunity to think outside the box and take rough ideas and form them into something that becomes a great idea. The one thing he is hoping to avoid is having someone shoot down his ideas without being able to express a reason why, nor help with an alternate idea. Constructive feedback is always welcome, though. These two guys have taken on a gargantuan job on behalf of the other 3000 of us, and of all future skirmishers. It will take many hours of their time and great deals of patience, research and thought over a period of years. They can only do so much by themselves. Lots of people in the N-SSA have ideas, suggestions, or complaints that can lead to improvements. Now is the time to speak up, and even contribute a little time and effort if possible. It takes a lot of people to make an organization like the N-SSA run well, and even more to find ways to keep improving it. If you have something to offer, please contact Ed or Bobby. Their contact information is in every Skirmish Line under the Region Commanders section on the Contact List page. Meet the Staff Officer or Committee Chairperson is a series that will be published in each edition of the Skirmish Line. The most recent N-SSA directory lists 29 Staff Officers and 17 Committee Chairs. This reflects the wide range of duties that must be performed to keep our organization running. Most of these volunteers are low profile people who work quietly behind the scenes, contributing an enormous number of hours of work to support the N-SSA each year. This series of articles is meant to bring them out of the background and share with our membership who they are and why they are in these jobs. Skirmish Line

North-South Skirmish Association Board of Director’s Meeting Winchester, Virginia Fort Shenandoah August 3, 2019 The Board of Director’s approved minutes by electronic vote on September 23, 2019. Commander Booz called the meeting to order at 8:00 a.m. Commander Booz welcomed everyone to the August Board of Director’s meeting of the North South Skirmish Association. The meeting would take most of the day and we will be conducting the business of the association. Commander Booz offered the Pledge of Allegiance and invocation.
Adjutant, Melinda Shaw called roll and the following were reported as present: National Officers Regional Commanders Commander, David Booz John Doyle, Allegheny Deputy Commander, Charles Kindle James Rogers, III, Carolina Adjutant, Melinda Shaw Robert Hannula, Central Virginia Paymaster, James Baird Edwin Thompson, Chesapeake Inspector General, Wayne Shaw Lawrence Gibson, Deep South Executive Secretary, Judy Stoneburner Roger Gray, Mid-Atlantic Eric Schuessler, Midwest Paul Morgigno, New England Robert Kelley, Northeast John Gaskill, Deputy, Northwest Davy Crockett, Potomac Mike Davenport, Tidewater Tom Mark, Representative, Western Upon motion by Charles Kindle, the Board Meeting Minutes of May 2019 were approved with correction. Upon motion by Charles Kindle, the Membership Meeting Minutes of May 2019 was approved. Commander Booz stated that, as you all know we live in some dangerous and troubled times. As a history professor, I have heard this many times. Perhaps in a democracy it will always be this way. Right now, if you like history you are wrong. If you like, the southern side of the Civil War you are wrong. If you like guns, you are wrong. It means that we must be extremely diligent about our hobby. We need to present our hobby in the best possible way. This is one of the major jobs of the Board of Directors, the Staff Officers, Committee Chairs and membership. Where does the membership get their leadership example? The examples are from the Board members and the other leaders of the association and those members that have attended the meeting. By virtue of you being present here today, this places you in a leadership role. Please be aware of how dangerous the times are right now. Mr. Charles Hahn has resigned as Program Officer. It is my recommendation that Lynn Warner of Rush’s Lancer’s and Jason Rexrode of Jeff Davis Legion be appointed Program Officer Co-chairs. Their performance during the October 2018 fall nationals was impressive. They are currently working on the national program and bringing things up to snuff. Mr. John Gaskill, of the 14th Tennessee Infantry, Regt. has been appointed as the National Registration Officer, effective immediately. Charles Kindle moved to add a board policy that at least two (2) members of the Board of Directors will examine a potential firearms range and give approval before it can be voted on by the Board for acceptance. Vote: 2 against, 14 in favor. The Policy is approved, effective March 1, 2020. Charles Kindle moved to add a Board policy to establish a fund to assist skirmishers who have suffered catastrophic injuries or disasters. A review board of three (3) skirmishers will oversee applications. Roger Gray amended the motion by adding money for this program may come from budgeted monies, contributions from regions, teams, individuals, or any other source acceptable to the Board of Directors and be used solely for this purpose. Vote: 1 against, 15 in favor Policy is approved. (Continued on page 15)

John Doyle moved to add a line to the National Registration forms for donations to the catastrophic fund. Motion passed. Commander Booz asked that two members of the Board agree to lead a sincere attempt to reach out to the re-enactor community and muzzleloader groups. This effort can be coordinated with some of our current officers. Please contact Commander Booz if you are a willing volunteer. I really feel that we are at a point in history where we cannot continue business as usual. As you go through the Board package, please look to see what we all can to do make the N-SSA stronger and more attractive to new recruits. Deputy Commander, Charles Kindle, began his report speaking about the possibility of going with a one phase, three-relay musket match on Sunday of nationals. He presented the statistics to the Board members. If the match begins at 9:00, the match could be finished by 2:00 (8:30 to 1:30, 8:00 to 1:00). He asked the Board members to speak with their regions and to consider this soon. A follow-up to this discussion will occur during the January 2020 Board meeting. We must register every vehicle and every person that comes on to this property. He suggested that registration go back to opening Tuesday of Nationals at noon and not closing until Sunday at noon. He made the motion to open registration from Tuesday noon to Sunday noon of the nationals beginning with the fall nationals 2019. 1 Against, 15 In Favor Motion approved. The motion was made to allow two host team-parking passes per team to be able to park on the range side of the bridge. After discussion, the motion was withdrawn. More discussion will occur at the October meeting after further investigation into the parking situation on the range side of the bridge and then possibly a policy will be submitted for the January 2020 Board meeting. Inspector General, Wayne Shaw, commended the 139th skirmish director, Butch Spence and his great staff. The Loudoun Rangers were unable to stand inspection at the spring nationals, and now has been re-scheduled for 10:00 a.m. Friday, during the fall nationals. We had an abnormal amount of fouled muskets (92) on Sunday. I am asking ALL regional commanders to speak to their teams and remind them of the importance of proper powder loads and bullet size. SAC cards appeared not to be an issue this National, but SAC was busy inspecting firearms all three days. Region commanders let your teams know to be more polite to the inspectors. They are volunteers; everyone is trying to do their jobs to keep people safe. National Adjutant, Melinda Shaw thanked the 44th New York Volunteers for their generous donation of $800.00 to the Youth Foundation. These funds will pay for the second place Young Skirmisher Award recipient’s membership dues for the upcoming year. She discussed the Youth Foundation and stated there is a substantial amount of money in the Youth Foundation that is not being utilized. She suggested hosting a BB tournament at Fort Shenandoah open to kids up to age14 throughout the country. The Youth Foundation set in place could be utilized to help support this. We could hold multiple different matches throughout a weekend as well as a prime time skirmish match or demo to show the parents and children what we do. We could send out invitations as well as publicly announce the event to attract the Boy Scouts, 4H clubs, etc. A date would need to be set without a skirmish scheduled in 2020 and volunteers in advance to ensure its success. The past Nationals and many previous skirmishes the frequency of shots or caps fired before the horn seems to have increased. We have a rule in place that the skirmisher that fires a shot before the horn is to ground their firearm and is not permitted to continue the event. However, there is a complete lack of enforcement. Putting the responsibility on the safety or line judge to tell a shooter they cannot shoot places them in an awkward position and potentially opens a door to a possible argument or altercation. Melinda recommended that the infraction call be made from the tower, which will require a rules change. This change will be submitted for the January board meeting. Executive Secretary, Judy Stoneburner reviewed the current membership numbers. The membership is currently at 2,775. We should add approximately 44 members between now and December 1st. Correspondence indicates a large number will join with the (Continued on page 16)

benefit of the fourteen-month incentive program. Also reported that we are 27 members less than last year at this time. She reported on the practice targets for the year to date, with 101 pre-ordered and 157 sold at the spring nationals. The 140th program was reviewed. Charles Kindle moved to allow the SCV & UDC Social to be a part of the National Program schedule of events, reserving their current time slot and location. Motion passed. The National Program schedule of events will be reviewed by the Program Chairs and will remain a working document until time to print. Charles Kindle move to appoint Charlie Hahn as Skirmish Director for the 144th Fall Nationals in 2021. Motion approved. The host team call to duty for the 2022 year will be presented at the January 2020 Board meeting for approval. She thanked Karen Rawls for the work she did putting in the data entry in registration during the spring nationals. The work was paramount in being able to provide the statistical information regarding attendance during the nationals. This year we began using wristbands (red & green) to identify our guest and visitors. Guests received green bands. These bands are for family members, team guests and those that the member or team is responsible for. It is suggested that parents mark the bands of small children with a team number, member number or something that could help identify a child should a child become separated from the parent/ responsible person. The red bands are distributed to the public that are required to leave the property each day. James Baird Paymaster delivered his report, which included the financial handouts. We appear to be on track with both Income and Expenditures except for a couple of items. Due to some unforeseen expenditures (replacement of chargers for the radios and software updates for the Skirmish Line) we are pushing the Budget in a couple of areas. We will be able to cover this overage by shifting some of the other budget amounts. The Statement of Income for the period January 1 thru July 15, 2019, Balance Sheet as of July 15, 2019, Statement of Restricted Funds as of July 15, 2019, Statement of Cash Balances as of July 15, 2019 and the Budget vs. Actual for the period January 1 thru July 15, 2019 were provided to the board members. Charles Kindle moved to approve the paymaster’s report. Report approved. Bob Gorsky, Bivouac Officer was unable to attend the meeting. Davy Crockett moved to allow Palmetto Sharpshooters 261CR (site 59, Area 3) to switch campsites with 21st Michigan Volunteer Infantry 123NW (site 62, Area 3). Motion approved. IT Manager, Linwood McMahon delivered his report. Final reports for the 139th Nationals, plus a summary/script of all shooting awards presented on Saturday and Sunday were sent to the National Commander, Statistics Officer, Executive Secretary and Museum Curator. Results were sent to Skirmish Line Editor for publication. Webpages, containing skirmish results classifications and DSSA/DSCA points have been posted on association’s website. He thanked Linda Ogdan and Sherry Myers who continue to volunteer their time doing the endless task of back office support and data entry. Regional programs have been provided to regions to date with updated classifications and competitor information. He thanked John Holland and Jon Loughry for assisting as bulletin (Continued on page 17) 16

board moderators. Host team invitations are usually posted the same day they are received. All radios were accounted for at the end of the 139th Nationals with the exception of the two, which were missing prior. Still missing are two CP200 Motorola radios, Motorola 16 channel serial # 018TMQ5638 and Motorola 4 channel serial # 018TMQ9342. During the January meeting, a motion to provide an environmental controlled area for storage of electronics equipment was made. Tim Scanlan announced that the association would not be paying for the storage safe; instead, the Artillery Battalion that conducts the Wainwright Skirmish will be donating it. It should be here by the fall nationals. Provost Marshall, Robert Klutas, was not present. His report did state that the spring national was the quietest on record. It is becoming a habit for National attendees to not display and/or fill out their issued Vehicle Identification Cards. Other continuing violations include speeding on Zollicoffer Road, parking in Handicap/Medical Lots without displaying the necessary plaquards/ registration plates and vehicles traveling the wrong way on Confederate Road to reach the William Black Road, in order to exit the area. He will be issuing a directive to all Provost Staff from this time forward that they shall issue Violation Citations to the members, Skirmish Staff included, beginning Wednesday of Nationals for the continue violations. Guests and visitors will be handled on a caseby-case basis. Recruitment Officer, Melinda Shaw announced the Virginia Outdoor Show would be held in Richmond, Virginia next weekend. We are having problems with members volunteering. If you know of anyone that wants to help with the trade shows, have them contact her. There is a reenactment group that would like to use the property, they are certified by the National Park Service and work with the Civil War Trust as well. We do not have any rules that do not allow use of our range to others. This is something we should analyze and it might help with our recruitment efforts. The report contains question several questions she receives from members. Question 1: Why aren’t we recruiting more? Answer: What are you doing to help us with recruiting? Question 2: Why aren’t we gaining members like the MLAIC are? Answer: The MLAIC allows you to join and compete as an individual. Our unique quality is that you must join a team to shoot. We have the temporary individual membership for a short amount of time. It is harder to recruit independent members, when we are a team sport. The program is good, but we are having a hard time seating these members, we may have to expand the program to better attract individuals and keep them. We still need volunteers. We need them for the BB matches, recruitment skirmishes, having a set program for presentations after trade shows. It would be beneficial to hold a recruitment skirmish in early March after the Great American Outdoor show. We have many prospective members visit from many states. We could advertise recruitment skirmishes in late winter, early spring. Commander Booz spoke about the leadership of the association. The Board’s job is to lead, to set an example, to listen to its members, and work for the betterment of the entire North-South Skirmish Association. Commander Booz sent out a survey to the Board members and he reviewed the results of the survey through a Power Point presentation. The survey covered the following topics: What is our vision for the future of the North South Skirmish Association? Where do you see the N-SSA in three years? The greatest strengths of the N-SSA? The greatest problems we face today? What do you see as our greatest problems in three years? What are you, and your region doing to make the N-SSA stronger? What is the greatest strength of your region? What is the greatest weakness of your region? Should there be term limits for regional commanders? Should we look for new ranges to skirmish? Others concerns What do we do next? He concluded with the statement to the board members that it is our job to lead and make the association better. We have a serious need to plan for the future. The power point is available if anyone would like to have a copy. As a result of the presentation, Mike Davenport moved to add to the spring national program an open forum for members with the Board members to be held on Thursday night from 6:00 to 7:15 p.m. in the lower level of the Historical Center. Motion approved. Sutler Officer, Linwood McMahon addressed the Sutler Parking issue from the January meeting. It has been determined that they can use the overflow parking area. He thanked Jeff Hall, Property Management Chairman and his committee for handling maintenance items within Sutler Row. He reported that he is working with Susan Saum-Wicklein to attract new sutlers to fill vacant booths. Commander Booz thanked him for the work done. (Continued on page 18) Skirmish Line

Jason Rexrode, Program Officer reported that he and Lynn Warner (co-officer) have been working on the host officer job descriptions and they have been put on the website. A point of contention has been the program scripts and they were ready a year ago. The spring issue with the scripts was that they were not read as written. Anyone that would like to have a copy of the script for a regional shoot, can contact Jason or Lynn for a copy. The scripts will eventually be posted on the main website. David Cole, signal officer spoke on the concern of cell phones being near the timers in the tower, which is believed to have cause interference. This will be discussed with the announcers and signs posted in each tower. Jason spoke about the time changes on the program for the fall. He reported that he has been instructed to send out a survey on how the nationals are conducted. He further discussed the issue of selecting host teams for nationals. Old Business regarding rule 2.9.2 “participate fully” The tabled motion from January 2019 read: “Participate fully” shall mean that the organization supplies adequate personnel (as determined by BoD) to effectively perform its assigned responsibilities. Non-members and /or units non-shooting members who perform work at a National Skirmish shall be counted toward a unit’s participation requirement, as long as the work is satisfactory to the Skirmish Director. Charles Kindle moved to bring the motion off the table. Motion approved Motion to change Rule change 2.9.2 “Participate Fully” to “Participate fully” shall mean that the organization supplies adequate personnel as determined by the Board of Directors to be 80% of the regular (shooting) members to effectively perform its assigned responsibilities. Non-members and/or unit’s non-shooting members who perform work at a National Skirmish shall be counted toward a unit’s participation requirement, as long as the work is satisfactory to the Skirmish Director. Vote: 4 opposed, 12 in favor. The motion was adopted after debate and amendments.
Example: The unit has a total of 20 members. 10 Regular (shooting) members plus 10 Non-Shooting members 80% of the Regular (shooting) members will be used to determine the participate fully requirement. Total needed: 8 Non-shooting members and family/other volunteers from the team may be used to meet the total needed. Jeff Hall, Property Management Officer discussed the lead abatement program for Fort Shenandoah. There are two boxes on the left side of the main tower. One contains a red flag, one contains a yellow flag. The yellow flag is flown when picking lead. There is a notebook to log in the amount of lead that has been recovered. Pick the lead and then record the poundage in the notebook. We have been doing this for several years. We must have this record of reclaimed lead. He covered the updates on the parking situation. Sutler parking will be in the lot where campers are parked over the winter. Currently, we are observing the parking situation and working on a plan. Commander Booz thanked him and his committee for the great job they are doing. John Holland, Small Arms Officer reported the 139th National saw the Small Arms Committee issue 40 Small Arms Individual approval cards. This means that in the six hours the SAC officer was open for business, the SAC inspectors measured the submitted arms, filled out the corresponding paperwork, wrote out and issued the permanent SAC Individual Approval cards at the rate of one complete SAC card every nine minutes. This does not include the number of Temporary Conditional Approvals issued, the numerous SAC cards re-issued for lost or damaged originals, and the multitude of walk-ins looking for SAC reference sheets, or seeking answers to small arms questions. There were no new submittals for N-SSA Production Approval at the May Board of Director’s Meeting. The SAC has created a small Reference Library though donations from various sources. He thanked both Mike Santarelli and Tim Prince for their most generous donations to the library. Matt Bennett, Statistics Officer presented his report. The issue has arisen and it is not the first time that the teams do not sign in on the correct console card or position. Ideas were presented to assist with this issue. The motion was presented to place two consoles per station to sign in marked A and B and a penalty be assigned when signing incorrectly on the console cards. Motion failed. The motion was presented to separate the competition to Breechloader/ Spencer and Single Shot into two separate matches to be held on Friday. Vote: 8 opposed 7 in favor Motion failed.

The motion was presented that revolver competition be moved to Thursday afternoon and allow enough time to have a Single shot competition following. The motion was withdrawn. The Program Officer will work with the schedule to allow more time between events on Friday. After action: The program has been adjusted to add more time between events on Friday beginning with the fall nationals 2019. Items from Executive Session Charles Kindle moved to approve the shooting awards as presented by the IT Officer. Motion approved. Charles Kindle moved to accept the presentation of the awards committee submitted by Nancy Crockett, Awards Chair. Mike Davenport moved to require the Skirmish Line Editor to attend Board of Directors meeting and National skirmishes. Motion approved Jim Rogers from the Carolina region presented a slide presentation on the Education and Youth Outreach Program. The program works with the Boy Scouts of America & the Royal Rangers providing quality instruction in safe muzzle loading marksmanship. They have the opportunity to earn their muzzle loading merit badge. He would like to have permission and work out the logistics to use Fort Shenandoah as a training and instruction site to certify muzzleloader instructors and in the future work something out to work with the Scouts. For those that are interested, they should speak with Jim Rogers. Commander Booz stated that this has great potential for the regions and the N-SSA and we need projects like this to see the association grow. Chris DeFrancisci, Marketing Committee Chair reported that Print Media continues to be a great venue for us to get out our message. Bruce Miller our PIO has reported continued success in our publishing efforts. There was an authored feature story to run in the July issue of the Civil War News and the summer issue of the Artilleryman. Continued service as member of N-SSA Marking committee with emphasis on the execution of the print advertising including placement and creation of ads. The marketing committee created a new ad for The Single Shot Exchange for space trade out with the Skirmish Line. The Nationals were featured in an issue of the NRA Shooting Sports. The committee began reciprocal web links program that will feature firearm and accessory sites on our sutlers page and they will put a link to the N-SSA on their web page. Chris has arranged a reciprocal ad arrangement with the Single Shot News and have them running our new ad. Other explorations are Air Gun Invitational, NSSF First Shots Program and Williamsburg Style Shooting Day. Chris DeFrancisci and Ed Thompson reported on their findings regarding the Single-Shot Pistol Team Match. The recommendations and comments are as follows. The issues around safeties performing their function property came up repeatedly. Given the nature of a short barrel in SSP completion, quick action by a safety is essential to prevent potential injury if an improper or dangerous action is observed. Recommendations and comments 1. Safeties should be required to undergo a mandatory safety and procedure review for SSP Team competition 30 minutes before the match. This should be mandatory and no team should be allowed to compete that has not had a safety who undergoes the training. Safeties should also review the rules for performing safety duties during matches. Team commanders are responsible for sending qualified people to attend the safety training. This process should go on for at least 2 -3 years until we reach a critical mass of trained safeties for each team. Competitors may not argue with a safety during the event but must follow the safety instructions (safeties should only correct competitors during an event if an unsafe or dangerous action is observed). Discussion on an action may occur AFTER the event, not during. (Rational for this is that distracting the safety may lead to missing an unsafe action by another team member. If safeties are properly trained, this should be a non-issue). The host team should also have their personnel undergo the same training along with a review of how the match should be conducted. The host team should observe the safeties and remind them of their duties if they observe a safety not performing their function. Posting the rules for Smoothbore Individual and Team completion in a prominent place on the pistol range should be done for each national. 2. Competitors should be reminded to review the rules for SSP Team competition and be present for a quick orientation. During the first demonstration match, the rules were posted for all to see, this is a good practice to continue. 3. Require all competitors to use a loading stand during the match. This will force a more controlled loading procedure; keep the arm in one, safe, position, while loading. Competitors who do not have a loading stand may not compete. A number of very simple, inexpensive stands have been shown by competitors and this should not engender any discussion on an imposition on the shooter. Skirmish Line

(Continued from page 19)
4. One barrier should be dropped during the team matches to make it easier for safeties to observe the competitors. Comments: These recommendations should be added to the proposed Smoothbore Pistol Company Match script and rules. The most important recommendation is the training and emphasis on the safety officers. Regardless of any other requirement for the competitors, if the safeties do not perform their function correctly, there is a risk of an unsafe, potentially dangerous, action by a competitor that goes uncorrected. Comment: Control of the short barrel while loading is a concern. Note that the SSP is considerably different than shooting the revolver. Loading the revolver is much more controlled and happens only once during each event. The SSP is loaded multiple times during each event and the potential for carelessness is much greater. Mike Davenport moved to allow a Single Shot Pistol demonstration match during the 2020 spring skirmish with the adoption of the above recommendations. Any logistical issues with this will be up to the pistol match officer. Motion approved Mike Davenport moved that a loading stand be required for Single Shot pistols during individuals. Motion approved. Effective March 1, 2020. Note: At this time, SSP team matches may not be offered at regional skirmishes. Ed Thompson moved to approve gold pins (bars) for 60 year’s service and every 10 years hereafter. The motion was tabled until a design and price can be provided.
Mike Davenport moved that the National Board allow individual members that have achieved 50-year status to procure at their own expense a single bolt gold stripe to be placed on their left sleeve of their jacket to match their team requirements to replace the individual 5-year bars. No expense will be incurred by the nationals, be done by the team or individual. Motion approved. John Gaskill moved to delete Policy 2008.3 that requires all new members to pay a one-time initiation fee of $25.00. Motion failed. Current Policy: Initiation Fee: Effective January 2008, applications for new members of the N-SSA must be accompanied by a one-time $25 initiation fee, which shall be deposited by the Paymaster into a capital land fund. Melinda Shaw moved to amend Policy 2008.3 to applications for new members of the N-SSA must be accompanied by a one-time $25.00 initiation fee for new members 21 years of age and over, which shall be deposited by the Paymaster into a capital land fund. Motion approved. Effective December 1, 2019 Paul Morgigno moved to have the each region host nationals as one group. Vote: 1 in favor 15 opposed. Motion failed. Robert Hannula and Edwin Thompson, Long Range Planning Committee Co-chairs discussed what they felt was their responsibilities within the committee to be and concluded the following. We would bring up general discussion items that we feel have merit, be they ideas of our own, or passed along to us by the membership for the Board of Directors to determine if they deserve further planning and discussion. They would provide the basic framework to an idea without getting into the minutiae. A separate committee, or the long-range planning committee, can come up with the specific details on any motions/ideas that merit further discussion. The following topics were discussed by the Board of Directors to see if the topics had merit for further discussions. The viability of printing and mailing the Skirmish Line. Board is already working on this topic. The possibility of allowing .22 caliber rifles to be used in the youth competition. No merit. The viability of renting portable shower trailers for use at nationals. Will look into the cost, logistics, maintenance, etc. The need for a future dues increase. Board members were asked to think about this for the future. (Continued on page 21) 20

Creating an “exit interview form to send to members that have declined to renew to see what/why they are not renewing. A draft copy of the exit form to be presented at the January 2020 Board meeting for consideration. Eric Schuessler moved to change By-Laws, Article X, Section 1, (E) from October 1 to September 1. The motion was approved and will be voted on at the 2019 Fall Nationals Membership Meeting. Current: Any new member joining on or after October 1 of the skirmish year shall have his or her dues applied to the following skirmish year, but have all the rights and privileges of full membership during the balance of the skirmish year in which the individual joins. (e.g., a brand new member joins at the 122nd National. He or she will be issued a card for the balance of skirmish year 2010 and his or her dues will be paid for skirmish year 2011. (Effective October 1, 2010) Proposed Any new member joining on or after September 1 of the skirmish year shall have his or her dues applied to the following skirmish year, but have all the rights and privileges of full membership during the balance of the skirmish year in which the individual joins. (e.g., a brand new member joins at the 140th National. He or she will be issued a card for the balance of skirmish year 2019 and his or her dues will be paid for skirmish year 2020. James Rogers moved to regulate the use of practice targets at National Skirmishes as outlined. N-SSA approved practice targets may only be used on frame 55 and above on the main range. Practice targets may only be used concurrent with National individual targets. Practice targets must be removed after each relay by the skirmisher. Host staff must provide one tower person in the practice target area. Host staff must provide one safety per eight skirmishers on the line at one time. If only one safety is available, no more than eight skirmishers will be allowed on the line during a relay. All handguns are prohibited from use with practice targets. Vote: 1 opposed, 15 in favor Motion approved. James Rogers moved to permit the use of paper-patch small arms projectiles and combustible revolver projectiles in N-SSA competition. For purposes of competition, paper patched projectiles are allowed, providing that all parts of the paper patch are in direct contact with the projectile and under no circumstances may cloth be used for patching or wadding. Vote: Opposed 10, In favor 5 #1 fails. Detached, loose or excessive paper cannot be inserted into the bore of any pistol, musket or rifle-musket and under no circumstances may cloth be used for patching or wadding Irrelevant as #1 failed. Combustible revolver cartridges are allowed. Vote 1 opposed 15 in favor, #3 passes. Scripts for company matches are becoming problematic, as those provided to announcers at National Skirmishes are sometimes at variance with those found in the Skirmish Rules. Rather than rewrite entire sections of the rules to match evolving adaptations the following is proposed and if you wish to proceed in this manner, John Robey reported that the Board can adopt this as a Board Policy, effective immediately, and the wording can be finalized in the January 2020 package. That wording be added to identify the scripts provided in the Skirmish Rules as default scripts, and 2. That wording be added to state that any deviation from the default scripts must be submitted for approval to the National Commander for national skirmish scripts or to the regional commander for regional skirmish scripts. Motion passed. Bruce Allen, Historical Center Officer presented a diagram of the potential layout of the museum. He discussed the need for new windows for the center. A member will replace them for free; the cost of the windows is a problem. He suggested that if each region donated funds for a window, only one window would have to be funded. The porch on the side of the building is in need of replacement. He requested a large copy of the map that shows range locations. He said that he plans to have the center reopen in the spring of 2020. The following regions donated $200.00 each for window replacement, Tidewater, Deep South, Northwest and Carolina. Bruce thanked Tim and his crew for the work they did on floor replacement and painting. (Continued on page 22) Skirmish Line

On the Lighter Side By Wayne Jordan Strange things sometime happen at skirmishes, and they cause other strange things to happen. And sometimes that means something interesting enough to put in the Skirmish Line. In this case, Steve Smith of Chiswell’s Exiles witnessed a musket shooter at Nationals load his musket with a minie ball, but no powder. That didn’t work out too well for the shooter during that relay. But he did motivate Steve to write a song about it. Steve is an accomplished singer and multi instrumentalist, with the autoharp being his specialty. Especially all you old fogies in the N-SSA, do you remember the hit song called Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow? It was written by Carol King and Gerry Goffin, and recorded in 1960 by the Shirelles. It was a number 1 hit song in 1960. Carole King later recorded it as part of her hit album Tapestry. And now it has come alive again with new lyrics for the N-SSA. If you’re not familiar with the song, just look it up on YouTube. Here are the lyrics along with chords for the musically inclined.
DID YOU PUT POWDER . . . . . . IN THE BARREL? By Steve Smith, Chiswell’s Exiles Verse 1 C F G To the line you go, so fleetly C G You’ll load your gun, completely E E7 Am Today, You say the sun was in your eyes F G C But, did you put powder in the barrel?
Bridge F Em Today these words you’ve spoken F C You say you’ve got a brand new gun F Em But will clay birds be broken Am D7 When the tower sounds the horn
Verse 2 Is your gun a historic treasure Or just a moment’s pleasure Can I believe the magic in your sights Did you put powder in the barrel?
Verse 3 I have to know that your score Is a score I can be sure of So tell me now and I won’t ask again Did you put powder in the barrel? Did you put powder in the barrel? Did you put powder in the barrel?

TOP GUN – MUSKET By Wayne Jordan At the 140th Nationals in October of 2019, Jordan Rindler of the 110th Ohio Volunteer Infantry shot the highest score on a single musket target with a score of 96-3x at 50 yards. Unlike past top shooters, Jordan has only been skirmishing since 2013 and is a relatively young 32 years old. He got started in skirmishing by his father-in-law, Jerry Smith, when he started dating his daughter, Ashley. Currently, Jerry is an active skirmisher and top shooter himself, and Ashley is on inactive status. Jordan married into a family that seems to range far and wide through the NSSA and even includes last Spring’s Top Gun, Alex Gamble of the Washington Blue Rifles. Jordan lives in Miamisburg, Ohio, with Ashley and their young sons Colton and Cameron. Hunting, fishing and family time are Jordan’s other major interests. Jordan and Ashley met through their work as registered nurses in 2010. But, the real question is one of how he has become such a strong competitor. So, I interviewed him to try to learn the answers and share this information with other skirmishers to use as they see fit. WJ – Jordan, can you tell us how you got started in the shooting sports and became so proficient with a musket? Jordan – I started dating Ashley in 2012 and her dad, Jerry, got me going in Jordan Rindler 2013. Jerry knew I was a deer hunter and he asked if I’d like to try shooting his 110th Ohio Volunteer Infantry musket. I really took to it and was hitting the black on most of my shots. He had all the equipment that I’d need and he didn’t have to persuade me to get started. He and other members of our team like Mike Rouch have helped me along on how to shoot black powder guns ever since. Although I’d done plenty of shooting before, black powder was a bit different and so there was a lot of learning and mentorship involved. I’ve been on the A teams for musket and carbine since shortly after I joined. WJ – Tell us about the musket and ammunition that you use and why you like it.
Jordan - I shoot an original Model 1841 Mississippi Rifle with a .54 caliber Bill Large barrel. The rear sight is the long range ladder sight with a square notch. Bullet mould was made by Shiloh Products with the bullet sized approximately 1/1000 under bore size. Jerry, being retired, makes most of our ammunition. Powder load is 46 g of 2F Goex. Jerry started using 2f long ago because the old timers when he started said to use it in anything larger than .50 caliber. It has served us both well. Jerry had worked the load up for the gun after buying it from an original member of the team who retired from skirmishing in 1985. Jerry mixes our lube using a traditional mix of one part beeswax and two parts Crisco and we dip the bullets into it on an electric skillet. We do not vary the mix for warmer or cooler weather. We also put Crisco in the base of each bullet with a cookie icing tube, but not til we get to the skirmish. We don’t weigh our bullets, but we do run them through a sizer to make sure they are consistent. I paint my front site fluorescent pink, basically because it was a team tradition. But it helps me to see everything that I need to see when aiming. WJ – Do you practice much? Jordan – I like to as often as possible, but some years more than others. Usually it is Jerry and me, and we often will meet at Mike Rouch’s house to shoot in his back yard. I’ll usually shoot 30 or 40 rounds at a time. We often use paper targets that simulate the various breakable targets that we expect to shoot at the next skirmish WJ – When you are on the firing line, can you describe how you shoot and what you are thinking? Jordan - I have no secret to success. I hold out on the forestock and wear only regular clear protective glasses. I’m in my 30s so vision has not yet become a problem for me. I stick my bayonet in the ground and lean the ramrod across it. I

generally shoot one shot at the siter and then move on to the scoring targets. I like to pull the gun up on the target, hold my breath, find my site picture and squeeze the trigger as soon as it feels right. I’m not a snap shooter, but I don’t want to take too long either or I start to feel wobbly. It is also a mental game as I try to get comfortable with my site picture while controlling my nerves so I don’t get shaky when I most need to be stable. WJ – Do you have any final advice for other skirmishers? Jordan - Get the best equipment you can, absorb all the information you can from other successful teammates, then practice as much as possible. New members to the N-SSA (and all black powder shooters) benefit greatly from having a mentor, and the 110th OVI has no shortage of them. As for mistakes to avoid, the first one that comes to mind is that if you’re shooting musket, make 100% sure your lead is dead soft. Any hardness to your lead and you have no chance. And remember, accuracy is more important than speed. This series will highlight our top shooters. After each National skirmish, I will interview the highest scoring musket shooter in an effort to share with our readers information about how this person became such a great shooter. The hope is that many of our members will be able to take some advice from these top shooters and factor it in as they strive to be better shooters themselves.
50 Years, One Team - The List Continues to Grow By Wayne Jordan In recent editions I have been listing 50-year members who have served all those years on the same team. And the names keep rolling in. JOHN W. KUHL and JOHN A. PETERSON – A couple of octogenarians who have been with the 15th New Jersey since the 1960s. Kuhl was a founding member of the team in 1960. (submitted by John Kuhl) C. NEAL TRAVIS, DALE SMITH, AND LEE TERRY – Have all been members of the 13th North Carolina for over 50 years. (submitted by Roger Gray) SHERM BURRES – Joined the 14th Virginia Cavalry 54 years ago. We’re not sure how a New Yorker ended up in a Virginia unit. Maybe a spy? JOHN HOLLAND – Has been a member of the 44th New York since the spring of 1963.
In Honor of the Old Guard By Wayne Jordan
Who is the oldest member of the N-SSA? Let’s break it down into three categories: 1. Who is the oldest dues paying member? 2. Who is the oldest member who still shoots in N-SSA events? 3. Who is the current member who has been in the N-SSA the longest? Send me your nominations. I’ll list any reasonable suggestions in the next edition of the Skirmish Line. Send your nominations to me at wvjordan@aol.com. Skirmish Line

NRA Senior Skirmisher Award By Wayne Jordan At each National Skirmish the N-SSA awards the top two musket shooters age 65 and older with the Senior Skirmisher Award. It is based on their aggregate individual musket scores.
The winners in the Fall 2019 National are
Jerry Smith and Mike Arnette. First place went to Jerry Smith of the 110th Ohio Volunteer Infantry with an aggregate musket score of 183-1x. He joined the N-SSA in 1981. Back in the 1960s with the Civil War Centennial festivities taking place, Jerry often thought it would be a great experience to shoot Civil War weapons. But it wasn’t until 1981 that he met a skirmisher and then quickly joined up. He now shoots a variety of firearms including his original Remington Zouave musket with a Bill Large barrel, a Smith carbine, smoothbore musket, and a Ballard single shot rifle. Jerry has spent all of his 38 years on the same team, and he has served as both Team Commander (4 years) and Team Adjutant (13 years). He is joined on the team by his brother, daughter, and son-in-law - Jordan Rindler (who had the highest 50 yard musket score in this Nationals). Jerry is retired from a 35 year career in law enforcement.
NRA Senior Skirmisher, 1st Place
Jerry Smith Jerry’s advice to other shooters who want to be their best is to find successful veteran shooters and learn from them. He also says that you can’t underestimate the need to have top quality equipment that is capable of shooting a tight group off the bench. Second place went to Mike Arnette of the Nansemond Guards with an aggregate musket score of 183. He has a long list of shooting awards for a variety of firearms in competitions with both the N-SSA and the National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association (NMLRA). Mike started shooting with the NMLRA first, but “when I started interacting with musket shooting skirmishers, I was hooked and joined the N-SSA.” He shot the five gun aggregate until he achieved a bronze star. Currently, he loves shooting musket, carbine, and pistol, and needs only a few more points to achieve the gold DSSA star. Mike has served as Team Captain for the USIMLT and won numerous awards with that team. Mike took a three-week Sniper qualification course and found that he can apply much of what he learned there to his skirmishing. “My best advice to up-and-coming skirmishers

NRA Young Skirmisher Award By Wayne Jordan At each National Skirmish the N-SSA awards the top two musket shooters age 18 and under with the Young Skirmisher Award. It is based on their aggregate individual musket scores. These two skirmishers will have their National dues paid next year by the sponsors of the award. This is one of many programs the N-SSA has been putting together to encourage young people to join and remain part of our organization.
The winners in the Fall 2019 National Young Skirmisher Award are both repeat winners,
Grant Ostner and Colin Scanlan. GRANT OSTNER of the 9th Virginia Cavalry was the first place winner with an aggregate musket score of 179-1x. This is his third consecutive first place finish. I asked Grant for an update about his shooting and his life’s plans. Here is what he had to say: “For the Fall National of 2019 I set my standards high for my score because I knew I was capable of scoring high. My standards for next year will be to beat my score this year and keep all my shots inside the black. “I am a 3 year varsity soccer player. For my first two years of high school soccer I played in the midfield. Like everything you do, I was very nervous to play in my first couple of games. After I got the swing of things I was NRA High Junior Skirmisher, 1st Place perfectly fine. Everyday after school we had practice Grant Ostner and it always was fun and was productive. At the start of my junior year I was nominated varsity speaking captain. It was a very honorable moment in my high school career because the rest of the team looked up to me and wanted to learn from me. I respected the nomination and have been a fairly good model for the rest of the team. My plan after high school is to try and get some kind of athletic scholarship to a school to take off some of the tuition fee. I am looking into the Sports Marketing field or Athletic Training field for my major in college.” Grant is currently a 16 year old junior in high school. If his shooting record with the N-SSA is any indication, it appears to be a good bet that Grant will excel in his chosen path in life. Stay tuned – I’m sure we will hear much more from him.
Of the four Young Skirmisher winners each calendar year, two of them are sponsored by Chiswell’s Exiles and the other two are sponsored by the 44th New York. The NRA also lends its name to the sponsorship of these awards, and provides the plaque listing the names of the winners. The awards were presented by Dave Booz, N-SSA National Commander, and Philip Schreier, NRA Museum Senior Curator. Sponsorship of the dues was originally started by the N-SSA Youth Foundation.

NRA Young Skirmisher Award COLIN SCANLAN of the 1st Maryland Cavalry earned second place with an aggregate musket score of 170-2x. He is nearing his 17th birthday and is a high school junior. Colin has won the Young Skirmisher several times since he turned 14 and started shooting in the N-SSA. And since I’ve written about him before, I also asked him for some new information to write about. This is what he told me: “I’ve been growing up at Fort Shenandoah since I was 10 months old. I’ve been built by the wise advice of many Skirmishers. I’ve been given everything I need to be a successful shooter. This is my 3rd year in the N-SSA, and so far my best. I also participated in the NRA High Junior Skirmisher, 2nd Place NRA world shooting championships this year. It taught Colin Scanlan me many new disciplines, and how to keep my cool through a bad performance. This National was rough for me, I had recently suffered the loss of my grandfather, Francis Rehm, of the 1st Maryland Cavalry. I tried my best to be strong, carry on, and shoot well. I’ve been told that I’ve done so and I hope my grandfather is proud.” Colin can rest assured that his grandfather is proud. In recent years I have heard many a veteran skirmisher refer to Colin as, “a fine young man.”
(Continued from page 31)
is to get a shooting data book and learn how to use it and record everything - what a hard right light does to your bullet strike, what happens when the light suddenly goes down, what about wind and how to compensate, how temperature effects bullet displacement, etc. Many of your International Shooting Team friends can help you with this, or contact me. Competitive shooting is a lifelong learning endeavor.” He also highly recommends that anyone who wants to improve on their shooting become of student of an Olympic champion shooter named Lanny Bassham. Lanny has audio courses and books on the market that will help you with every aspect of shooting, but heavily concentrates on proper mental conditioning. Mike lives in La Grange, NC, is married to Chastity, has one son and several stepchildren. He hunts all over the world, has become an “exercise freak” (running, swimming and weight lifting, all of which help with his shooting), and is a serious student of American Indian culture with contacts among the Blackfoot tribes. Mike is an Oral Maxillofacial Surgeon and somehow manages to fit patients into his busy schedule of shooting events.

HELP THE N-SSA LIVE FOREVER! Wayne Jordan, Charitable Giving Committee Chair
As we near the end of this year, I hope that it has been a good one for all our members and their families. I also hope that you will take a last look at your personal finances and consider sending a tax deductible donation to the N-SSA. A return envelope is included in this edition of the Skirmish Line for your convenience. Nonprofit organizations like ours can only survive with the financial support of its members. As of mid-October when I am writing this, the donations are starting to roll in. We’ve received checks ranging from $10 to $2000. All donations are greatly valued, and any donation will get you listed on our Color Bearers list of donors. We’ll also send you a couple of decals (like the Proud Donor logo printed on this page) that I hope you’ll place on your vehicle, gun cart, trailer, etc. The more of these that are seen at skirmishes, the more other people may donate. You, as a skirmisher who donates, are the best motivator to others to do so, too. If you are a donor, please speak up at your team and regional meetings about the need for more people to donate. The N-SSA has now received $1545.45 in donations from the Amazon Smile program. This is an unrestricted charitable donation to our organization. It is based on purchases that our members (or anyone, for that matter) makes through their page at smile.amazon.com. All you must do is set up the North-South Skirmish Association as your designated charity, then be sure to sign into the Amazon Smile page when making your purchases. You’ll see the N-SSA listed in small print at the upper left corner of the webpage when you are in the right place. The more of us who do this when making purchases, the more free money the N-SSA receives. Please take a moment to do so while making your Christmas purchases. Do you still need to take your IRA account Required Minimum Distribution for this year? You must do so if you hit age 70 ½. Many people wait until the end of the year to take this money. Congress has actually set up a nice tax break if you use that money to donate to a charitable organization. If you are forced to take money that you don’t really need, just have it sent directly to the charity and you’ll avoid paying income taxes on that money. For some people that can be a significant tax savings. You can only use as much money as the amount of your RMD, and you must transfer the donation money to the charity before you have used your RMD for the year. It really is quite simple and easy to do, but it must be done correctly.
PLEASE USE THE ATTACHED RETURN ENVELOPE TO SEND IN YOUR DONATION or MAKE A DONATION BY CREDIT CARD OR CHECK AT ANY NATIONAL AT DOC’S PLACE STORE. The North-South Skirmish Association is a 501 c 3 organization and is able to accept tax deductible donations. If you have any questions about how to help the N-SSA with charitable gifts, please contact Wayne Jordan, Charitable Giving Officer, at wvjordan@aol.com. 48

REGIONAL NEWS - Tidewater As the 2019 skirmish season closes, we look back over the year and celebrate our accomplishments as a region, as teams and as individuals. We keep the memories of teammates and friends in a special place in our hearts that left us this year. With the close of this year The Tidewater region has already begun to look and plan for 2020. This past year the Region worked diligently on improvements of the Fort Mahone range in Capron, Virginia during the annual workday. During the spring regionals, the main tower at Fort Mahone was dedicated to the late Dr. Miles Britt, a former N-SSA member whose generosity graces our region with the fine shooting range that we use. Dr. Britt’s, widow, children and grandchildren attended the regionals for the dedication. Speaking with Mrs. Britt was a pleasure and she fondly shared stories and memories about the early years of skirmishing and how simple skirmishing use to be. Wythe Rifles put on a well-run and enjoyable fall regional skirmish providing good food and great weather. The Cancer Fund Raising committee sold purple t-shirts to support the Cure for Cancer skirmish, Curing cancer one mini-ball at a time. Tidewater members wore the purple T-shirts during the Fall Nationals in support of the region’s campaign to raise money for a cure for cancer. The Cure for Cancer Skirmish was held October 18 through 20th. A final report will be presented during the region’s January meeting. The traditional Last Chance Skirmish was held November 1 st through the 3rd. The Tidewater Region welcomes sixteen new members to the association this year.
