I hope that all of you are doing well. I am always amazed at how fast time goes, and as we get older it seems to fly even faster. We are already half-way through our shooting season. I hope that when you read this you will still have time to attend the August Board of Directors meeting which will be the first Saturday in August at Fort Shenandoah. You should see your regional commanders in action at the Board meeting. This edition of the Skirmish Line has a lot of coverage of the 2019 Spring National. Congratulations must go out to the 110th Ohio, the 9th Virginia Cavalry, the 8th Regiment Virginia Volunteer Infantry, the Nansemond Guards, the Dismal Swamp Rangers, and the Maryland Guard for their continued excellence in team events. These teams are deep in talent and participate regularly to keep their skills at a very high level. They all won multiple medals and they are good examples for all of the teams in the N-SSA. There are many other strong teams who won at least one team national medal this spring. Congratulations to all. One of the very best parts of the job of commander, as I see it, is to be able to give out the awards at the end of each national skirmish. Fred Schell, Youth Program Coordinator, has graciously allowed me to give the medals to the young people who have earned them in the Air Rifle Competition. As they come up to receive their medals most of them are little shy but one can see the joy that they have on their faces, and how proud their parents are of them. That is the way it should be! When the awards start for the skirmishers I see many skirmishers for repeat performances and it is always good to see these people. But we also want to see new people winning awards and at the Spring National I shook hands with new medal winners. It was good to have some new blood pushing the old guard. I hope that everyone who receives an award at this ceremony would come to it in their Class A uniform. We put the pictures of the winners on our Facebook page and in our magazine and we want people to see us at our best. I do not think that it is too much to ask or to expect that skirmishers wear their uniforms for this ceremony. Our nation has a lot of issues facing it at this point in its history and one may say that this has always been the case. However, we are the ones who must deal with the current issues. I strongly encourage you to be aware of the issues that impact the N-SSA and help us to preserve our sport for generations to come. For those who skirmish away from Fort Shenandoah please look for new ranges that we can use. New ranges would most likely be ones that already exist and we could rent or partner with them. Please continue to recruit new members. At the Mason Dixon this weekend I was happy to shake hands with several new recruits to our ranks. We can never stop recruiting and it is something that every member must be conscience of and hopefully will regard as a duty. We will once again have a recruiting booth at the annual Gettysburg Reenactment and in the past we have gained new members from this event. This Skirmish Line should be coming out on the heels of the last one. We certainly hope to get back on a better schedule. In order to do so, several things need to happen and one of those is that members, and regions, need to send information in to the editor of our magazine. Please consider sending in articles on your skirmishes, on how to do gunsmithing or restoration, on the history of your unit, or human interest stories, or any subject that you think would be appropriate. As with all aspects of the N-SSA, we all have to help to make our hobby the best that it can be. Thank you for all that you do to help the N-SSA. See you on the firing line! 4

The Unsung Skirmisher By Wayne Jordan Word has drifted over to me about a guy in the Northwest Region who seems to always have the time and energy to step up and lend a hand. So I started looking into it and found out about a guy named John “Mac” McLeod of the 7th Tennessee. He’s been an N-SSA member since 1983. It seems that Mac’s skills range from shooting, to gun repair, to vehicle repair, to cooking over a fire. And this sounds like the guy I’m looking for. “He never asks for help, but he always offers it,” says teammate Jeff Payne. Adds Penny McLeod, “He always helps people on other teams as much as his own teammates. You need ammo, a main spring, anything at all, and the chances are that Mac will round it up for you.” I’ve heard Mac referred to as the “Armorer for Life” of the 7th Tennessee, due to his extensive knowledge of all types of firearms, and his willingness to jump in and help out any skirmisher at the first sign of need. Penny says it is not unusual for Mac to come home from a skirmish with more guns than he went with because he’s always running into someone who needs some work done on their gun. He is often found standing behind new shooters, even on other teams, to watch them and offer advice. And he’ll lend guns to other members who want to try a new gun, or whose own gun is in need of repair.
Unsung Skirmisher
Mac McLeod
Mac’s profession was as a jet engine mechanic and welder, but he has tinkered with cars and trucks all his life. It’s amazing how often he has been able to put those skills to work while skirmishing. Maybe it’s something about the Northwest Region, but it seems that skirmishers make a habit of limping into skirmishes with a dying vehicle if Mac is there. He has been known to diagnose the mechanical problem and find a fix, even once rebuilding a starter in the field. He once had a teammate show up at Fort Shenandoah with his truck being towed on a flat bed after hitting a deer about 30 miles out. The front end was bent up and the radiator smashed. But by the end of the skirmish Mac had that truck straightened out enough that a new radiator could be installed and the skirmisher could drive back home. Another time, when Mac was on the host team at a skirmish and was busy setting up for the weekend, another teammate showed up with a broken leaf spring on his trailer. Amid all his duties, Mac still found time to replace the guy’s leaf spring before the skirmish was over. I’m told that service to others has always been Mac’s way of life. He served in the Air Force in Vietnam and then served in the Michigan National Guard for 28 years. He is a member of the VFW Honor Guard. His son, Hugh, has grown up with skirmishing and is now the Northwest Regional Commander. Mac’s wife, Penny, accompanies them both to skirmishes. Penny and Hugh tell me they are very grateful for Mac bringing them into the world of skirmishing. Terry Davis, Team Commander of the 7th Tennessee sums up Mac this way, “Mac, and his wife Penny too, are the kind of people that keep teams going. They are the anchor for our team, and Mac is always in the lead when there is work to be done, broken things to be fixed, or someone needs a helping hand. I personally would probably not have stuck with Skirmishing for 20 years if it were not for him. He is a credit to himself, the 7th Tenn, the NWT, and the N-SSA.”
Mac McLeod, for the positive effect that you have had on so many skirmishers over the years, and for being there when they needed you, you are being recognized as the Unsung Skirmisher. This is a regular feature for the Skirmish Line. I will need the help of the membership to make it work. In each edition of the Skirmish Line I would like to highlight at least one of our members who has done something special for the rest of us. This could encompass a wide variety of actions, but the common thread will be that this person (or persons) has made a special effort to do something above and beyond the call of duty for the benefit of the N-SSA and its members. It can be large or small. I need our members to be on the lookout for such an individual and his/her good deeds and send me the information about the person and what he/she did. If possible send me a photograph as well. It could even be a pair of people or a group of people. And it will be published here. Now, who can nominate someone else for our next issue? Do you know someone who has given selflessly of their time for the benefit of others? Contact me at wvjordan@aol.com, or call me at 703-407-2445. 8

An accessional series about items of curiosity found around Fort Shenandoah or anywhere that skirmishes take place.
By Wayne Jordan Have you noticed the four benches that have appeared in Sutler’s Row during the last year or two and wonder where they came from? Many have found them to be quite a comfortable convenience when strolling through the sutlers area.
These benches were a gift to the N-SSA from Susan Saum-Wicklein, also known as The Jeweler’s Daughter, the name of her sutler shop. Her shop is located at the upper corner of Sutler’s Row with windows that open to the front and to the main road on the side, right beside The Regimental Quartermaster. The benches are a tribute to longtime sutler, George Lomas, who owned The Regimental Quartermaster until his death a couple years ago. Susan had been in a serious and committed relationship with George for over 20 years and they operated their stores as partners. George had been active in the Civil War community since the 1960s, first with his sutler shop and then by branching out into other related ventures and activities. By the 135th anniversary of Gettysburg in 1998, George had been involved in the development and staging of various Civil War events, and he decided it was time to take a big step up. He took the lead along with some partners in creating the largest reenactment ever to take place up to that time. With over 80 cannon crews (some drawn by horses), more than 20,000 reenactors, and more sutlers than you could count, all placed on fields outside Gettysburg that resembled the topography of the actual battlefields, and conducted in the dry, dusty, hot and sunny 98 degree weather that was reminiscent of the actual battle, it was a huge and realistic undertaking that brought tens of thousands of people to see it. And George remained one of the leaders in producing the reenactment every year afterward until his passing. In addition to running the Regimental Quartermaster shop in Gettysburg, he also built a large collection of Civil War memorabilia, relics, and weapons. In fact, a museum and learning center will be opening in Gettysburg this year near the Farnsworth House to display George’s collections. As Susan attended to her Jeweler’s Daughter shop on Sutler’s Row, she noticed that there were plenty of skirmishers and guests wandering by who looked like they could use a place to rest for a minute or two. She became acutely aware of this during George’s last days when he was losing mobility and often needed to stop and sit down. So, what could be a better tribute to George than to place benches for his former customers and friends to rest on? Susan reached out to the N-SSA with her proposal to install the benches and submitted pictures of what she wanted to do. Once she received the formal permission from National Commander Dave Booz, she purchased the benches and, with the help of Mark Starkweather from the Regimental Quartermaster assembling them, they were put in place. In addition to the benches, a plaque was placed on the outside wall of George’s old shop dedicating the benches to his memory. As for Susan, her shop is a family legacy of sorts. Her great grandfather was a watchmaker and his descendants were involved in the jewelry business. In 1994, Susan created her Jeweler’s Daughter business as an outgrowth of her family’s business, and she has operated in Gettysburg ever since. Upon George’s passing, Susan took over the Regimental Quartermaster as well, and operates them together as has been the case for over 20 years. George was known as a long time sutler to the N-SSA, a friendly and outgoing guy who was willing to lend a hand, and a generous person. His memory will live on in many places, not the least of which will be Sutler’s Row at Fort Shenandoah. MEET THE STAFF OFFICER By Wayne Jordan Meet Matt Bennett, the National Statistics Officer of the N-SSA. A skirmisher since 2001, Matt started with Chiswell’s Exiles and has been with the 8th Virginia Infantry for the last ten years. So what exactly does the Statistics Officer job entail? Like most jobs in the N-SSA, there is a lot more to it than meets the eye. It is a very time consuming job that demands many hours of Matt’s time throughout the National Skirmishes and also during the week before the Nationals. It is also a job that has no room for error. In its broadest sense, Matt says, “My job is to assist the host team with all their needs. I advise and make recommendations to the Host Stat Officer.” But that is a very modest description of all that the National Stat Officer must do.
Matt Bennett National Statistics Officer Starting a month before the National, Matt gets down to serious work. He makes contact with the Skirmish Director, Adjutant, and host team Stat Officer to start defining the duties to be done in the stat house and organizing the staff to carry them out. He also starts some of the computer and organizing work at home such as printing out well in excess of a thousand stickers to place on individual musket targets to designate them as targets for smoothbore, single shots, and Henry. On the Friday before Nationals, Matt goes into the Veterans building to set up and organize for the next day’s work. His son, Chris, also a skirmisher, usually helps him at this stage. On Saturday, a full day is spent working with the host teams to label, sort, and bundle an average of 4500 – 5000 individual targets with a staff of about 25 – 30 people. Each of these targets must have stickers for an individual skirmisher for the events that he/she has signed up for. These thousands of stickers are printed up and provided to him by Linwood McMahon, the N-SSA IT Officer. The stickers are color coded to help avoid errors, and the colors change with each National. When complete, all the targets are taken to the Registration office to be distributed to a representative of each team as they arrive for the National. At the beginning of Nationals week it’s time to set up the Stat House. Work stations are set up and space is made for the sorting, scoring, and tracking functions that will take place. The various stations are color coded to match the target stickers which helps keep things organized. “Color coding makes it easy to recognize which targets are being scored and filed, thus avoiding lots of confusion and mistakes,” Matt says. The various setup jobs include printing out console cards, setting up bins, and scoring jigs and score cards, as well as providing instructional materials and training to stat house personnel and line judges. Meanwhile the back room that is only used during Nationals also needs to be set up with computers for the Nationals Statistics Staff to use throughout the week. This is coordinated with the IT Officer, Linwood McMahon. The data input is generally done by permanent National staff. Ideally, there would be about eight people working in there, but they are always shorthanded. Any skirmisher, or even a non member, can volunteer to be part of this staff. Just contact Matt. Right now his workhorse in this room is Linda Ogden who works many hours during the week. Numerous other people help out part-time during the week such as Tim and Katie Scanlan helping with Artillery stats, and Sherry Myers, Bobby Hannula, and Erick Shaw, among others, helping with a range of statistical data. On Friday after all the scores are input to the computers, the top 40 in each category are verified again. Although all targets are already double checked, this extra step ensures that the top scores are correct. At this time the tie breakers must also be applied to targets with the same scores, and then doublechecked again. Given how many targets are scored, there are very few protests filed, and only 2 or 3 of them lead to any score changes. “We are human, we do make mistakes, and we try to mitigate them by having as many safeties and verification steps as seem prudent,” Matt says. The day typically starts in the Stat House at 7:30 am and goes until the work is done. Matt’s goal is to send people home (Continued on page 15) 14

by 5 pm, which he can often do. Given the momentousness of the job, and the fact that every Nationals has a new group of people working there, it takes quite a bit of organization to get the job done. The job itself and the systems used are constantly evolving as experience brings to light new ways to be efficient. “One of my biggest goals is to keep peoples’ days as short as possible and send them home so they can relax and enjoy being at the skirmish. Then, the next day they can come in fresh, rested, and ready for the day’s work,” he says. As part of Matt’s duties he will train people in the finer points of scoring targets and determining tie breakers. But he can not make the final call. “I can instruct them as to how to deal with a difficult target, but the host team staff must make the final determinations.” This is done because the National staff is also able to go to the firing line and compete during the National. And it would not be right to allow a skirmisher to score targets for his competitors. Eventually, the staff reaches the point of posting results, dealing with protests, and distributing the team and individual medals. And then the final cleanup and filing takes place. Why would you take on this job? Matt often worked the Stat House when his teams were hosting skirmishes and he seemed to have a knack for the work. When his predecessor, Jeff Knauss, decided to give up the job after many years of service, several people made overtures to Matt about taking on the job. Since he was retiring from his job around that time, he decided it was a good time to plunge in and offer his services to the N-SSA. As for his qualifications, Matt served in the military where one of his jobs in the Marine corps was working as a statistician at Marine HQ. In his 28 years of service as a Deputy Sheriff in Fairfax County, VA, he also worked extensively with record keeping and statistical work. He has also taught a few classes at the local community college in Construction Math and Manufacturing Skills. Lastly, as an active shooter he has encountered just about every target scoring issue himself on his own targets, so he understands the skirmisher’s point of view. What is the best part about handling this job? Matt enjoys studying the processes and finding ways to streamline and make the jobs easier. One of his most satisfying experiences is when a staffer tells him that working in the Stat House during the Nationals week was easier, quicker, and less stressful than they’d anticipated. There is a great deal of satisfaction to be had at the end of the week when the work is done and there is so much accomplishment to point to. And seeing the pride and satisfaction of the staff at the end of the week is very rewarding. There is also a good deal of satisfaction from resolving all the issues that pop up throughout the week. The worst part of the job? Nothing, really. But there are a lot of items that must be done prior to the start of Nationals and he is always hoping that he can anticipate and cover everything that needs to be done ahead of time. Matt has been doing this job now for four or five years. At the beginning, he and Chris went into the back room, pulled everything out, cleaned thoroughly, painted the walls, mounted cabinetry, and set up the room for a fresh start. Otherwise, he has served his teams as Deputy Commander, Adjutant, Treasurer, and host team Stat Officer. He shoots musket, carbine, single shot, smoothbore, and revolver. Matt is married to Rosa, lives near Ft Shenandoah in Stephens City, and has a daughter, Rachel, as well as his son Chris, a multiple Young Skirmisher winner. Originally from Queens, NY, he is the type of person who “just can’t sit still”. He wants to stay active, and has been a motorcycle enthusiast all his adult life. Final thoughts? Like most of us, Matt loves being a skirmisher. He says, “When I come up to camp I feel like I’m getting away from the every day stresses of the world. I can enjoy life, the camaraderie, good friends, and campfires. And there is nothing like standing beside my son on the firing line, even if he does sometimes outshoot me.” Meet the Staff Officer or Committee Chairperson is a series that will be published in each edition of the Skirmish Line. The most recent N-SSA directory lists 29 Staff Officers and 17 Committee Chairs. This reflects the wide range of duties that must be performed to keep our organization running. Most of these volunteers are low profile people who work quietly behind the scenes, contributing an enormous number of hours of work to support the N-SSA each year. This series of articles is meant to bring them out of the background and share with our membership who they are and why they are in these jobs.

TOP GUN – MUSKET By Wayne Jordan At the 139th Nationals in Spring of 2019, Alex Gamble of the Washington Blue Rifles shot the highest single musket target with a score of 94-1X on his 50 yard target. Alex is single and living near Fort Shenandoah now. He is retired from a career with the IRS as a programmer and analyst. Other than skirmishing, Alex has another hobby that takes him to locations around the country and lets him meet lots of people from around the world – Ballroom Dancing, which he has been active in for 15 years.
But, the real question is one of how he has become such a strong competitor. So, I interviewed him to try to learn the answers and share this information with other skirmishers to use as they see fit. WJ – Will, can you tell us how you got started in the shooting sports and became so proficient with a musket? Alex – I was living in Ohio in the early ‘80s when my cousin, Jerry Smith, and some other relatives, got involved in skirmishing with the 110th Ohio. I was preparing to join them when a job opportunity took me to Washington, DC., and a new home in Northern Virginia. Jerry suggested that I contact the Blue Rifles since they had just won a National Top Gun Alex Gamble championship and were local. I wanted to join a good team where I could learn a lot Washington Blue Rifles about shooting, and I preferred a Union team since I thought I’d be moving back to Ohio sometime and might even join my relatives on the 110th Ohio. I was ready to get a musket and carbine up and ready to shoot. Other than a little bit of hunting as a kid, I had never been involved in shooting sports when I joined the N-SSA in 1982. As far as the history of the Civil War goes, I recall the centennial events in the ‘60s and have always had some interest due to growing up with that. In fact, I had ancestors on both sides during the war. I also had ancestors in the Revolutionary War. The team helped me get started shooting. Steve Light was a big help. He helped me with drilling peep sites and making many adjustments over time. He also shared many of the old Skirmish Line articles he had before I became a member. He was always telling me to make the best ammo I could and take control of the loading process to take as many variables out as possible. Get the best equipment you can afford, then just get out and get plenty of trigger time. WJ – Tell us about the musket and ammunition that you use and why you like it. Alex – I started out with a Richmond Short Rifle, but now I am shooting a Whitneyville Type II. I use a standard Hodgdon bullet with 45 grains of Goex 3f powder and peep sights. I make my own lube, based on a recipe that our team has used for a long time. It is a combination of lard and beeswax. I use a lubrisizer and do not put any lube in the base of the bullet, but I make sure all the rings are full. I tried weighing my bullets once, but I found that they were very consistent when they came out of the mould, and I decided weighing was a waste of time. Steve Light gave me a “perfect bullet” many years ago, which I still have and use as a model of how all my bullets should look. I throw back anything that doesn’t resemble that bullet. I probably throw back some that would shoot just fine, but I know just what I want to see in a bullet. I like the Hodgdon, but you have to use very soft lead with it. My musket has a .580 bore and I’m able to use a .579 sized bullet in it. WJ – Do you practice much? Alex – I get out to practice shooting whenever I can. Being close to Ft Shenandoah is a help. I make lots of bullets in the winter, in large batches, and keep plenty of bullets in stock at all times. I’m always ready to shoot when the opportunity presents itself. When I am doing my best, I have been practicing with my pellet rifle or revolver and shooting 22’s when the (Continued on page 19)

weather breaks in the Spring. I try to shoot paper during the summer. I think it is important because you may find you have problems before you get to the team matches and you can get them fixed. Keyholing, grouping changes, the way I’m holding and sighting, etc., can all change, and I can see what is happening on the paper. WJ – When you are on the firing line, can you describe how you shoot and what you are thinking? Alex – I try to relax and not think about anything in particular. If there is noise around me or I hear someone behind me holding a loud conversation I know I am not paying attention to what I should be doing. If things are going good I put all the excess noise out of my mind and do not hear it at all. Try to stay focused and relax while putting the site on the target. I usually bring the site up from the bottom until I think I am just below center of the target and try to squeeze off the shot. And if the site remains in the black I usually hit somewhere there. If I call my shot, I will usually shoot five more before I look again. That way I do not get as excited if things are going great. If I missed pretty bad I just try to hold it tighter. As for my shooting style, I got into the habit of holding my ramrod while shooting. That evolved due to shooting in some place where there was not a suitable ground surface for placing my bayonet to hold the ramrod. As for my sights, I just leave them black rather than painting them. That isn’t as good for individual targets, but it works well in the team matches. One of my biggest problems is that sometimes I just try too hard and forget to relax and breath. That makes a big difference. WJ – Tell me about your eyesight issues. Alex – My old eyes need the peep sights. I had two sets of glasses made for the long site radius of the Musket and Smoothbore vs the short radius of the Carbine and Single shot Breech-loading Carbine. As my eyes have changed over the years, I’ve had to try different glasses and struggle with trying to see both the sights and the targets. I had Lasik surgery on my eyes in 2005, and that brought about big changes that I had to adapt to, also. Over time I have enlarged the size of the peep hole on my sights, too. WJ – Do you have any final advice for other skirmishers? Alex – I am always learning in this sport, listening to other skirmishers and sharing experiences. I am concerned about lead buildup in my barrel, so I frequently swab my barrel with a patch soaked in Hoppes which I think helps pull the lead residue out. I like to buy my powder in large batches so that I’m always shooting from the same lot. Although todays manufacturing processes are pretty good, I like to know that I’m using the exact same powder each time I shoot. One of the most important lessons is to BE CONSISTENT. In everything you do, whether it is the way you cast bullets, the way you hold the gun, the lube and powder you use, etc., etc. Eliminate as many variables as you can, and consistency is the best way to do that. Otherwise, shooting can be a very mental game. You must force yourself to be relaxed at all times. Don’t let yourself get excited when shooting well, or nervous when shooting poorly. Don’t push yourself to try too hard. In fact, when shooting my 50 yard target at this past Nationals, I was standing beside a guy shooting a Sharps and we were talking a little in between shots. I decided to just relax and converse with him a little and then wait til after he fired each shot to fire mine. Although I was concentrating on my shooting, I think I was more relaxed than usual due to there being a little bit of distraction between my shots, and that contributed to my good score. Last of all, just get out, relax and have fun on the line, and as one old-timer told me it is better to be lucky than good sometimes! This series will highlight our top shooters. After each National Skirmish, I will interview the highest scoring musket shooter in an effort to share with our readers information about how this person became such a great shooter. The hope is that many of our members will be able to take some advice from these top shooters and factor it in as they strive to be better shooters themselves.

National Skirmish Invocation This invocation was written by John Zebelean of McNeill’s Rangers and read by him from the tower during opening ceremonies at the Spring 2019 Nationals. Heavenly Father whose loving hand has given us all that we possess, we thank thee for bringing us together upon these fields to partake yet again in the sport we all love known as skirmishing. Our sport was born of the most tragic event in our nation’s storied history where countrymen fought each other to the death when differences could not be reconciled by peaceful means. While that tragedy is in the distant past, nonetheless we do not forget it nor do we forget the acts of human courage and sacrifice that manifested themselves in those dark times. Skirmishing exists as a means to keep us mindful of both the tragedy of the Civil War and the tremendous endurance of those souls who suffered it. For many of us, Lord, skirmishing has become an integral part of our lives that through your grace, is enjoyed over and over again as the years creep by and we watch families grow, children become adults, and sadly long time acquaintances, as well as dear friends, pass from the scene. Today we cannot help but notice those now missing whom you have called home. Bless and welcome them into your loving arms, Most Merciful Father. For this we ask in your name. Amen.

NRA Young Skirmisher Award By Wayne Jordan At each National Skirmish the N-SSA awards the top two musket shooters age 18 and under with the Young Skirmisher Award. It is based on their aggregate individual musket scores. These two skirmishers will have their National dues paid next year by the sponsors of the award. This is one of many programs the N-SSA has been putting together to encourage young people to join and remain part of our organization.
The winners of the Spring 2019 National NRA Young Skirmisher Awards are
Grant Ostner and Michael Clark. Grant Ostner of the 9th Virginia Cavalry was the first place winner with an aggregate musket score of 165. This is his second consecutive first place finish. It was only last fall that I did a writeup on Grant, so I’ll let him update you in his own words. “After a few years of shooting in the organization and being around skirmishers of many different ages, I have learned many tips and different techniques to use when competing. All from being disciplined in NRA Young Skirmisher Award, 1st Place keeping my same procedure, to keeping a positive Grant Ostner attitude and always thinking about my current shot and to forget my last shot. Another tip is to stay open minded to everyone because you never know what you might learn. “Also within our organization, good sportsmanship is a key essential when shooting amongst one another. As I shot in individual competition, seeing other skirmishers having good sportsmanship taught me that we help one another improve our shooting skills. It’s also about having a good time with each other. I enjoy how skirmishers of all ages can treat each other as equal colleagues.”
Of the four Young Skirmisher winners each calendar year, two of them are sponsored by Chiswell’s Exiles. For 2019, there may still be sponsorship opportunities available. The NRA also lends its name to the sponsorship of these awards, and provides the plaque listing the names of the winners. The awards were presented by Dave Booz, N-SSA National Commander, and Philip Schreier, NRA Museum Senior Curator. Sponsorship of the dues was originally started by the N-SSA Youth Foundation.

NRA Young Skirmisher Award The second place winner was Michael Clark of the 4th Virginia Infantry with an aggregate score of 154. A year ago, Mike was the first place finisher. Again, I’ll just give you the updates on Mike. Mike is still shooting the Richmond rifle that his dad built. He is proud to have a musket handmade with all his dad’s hard work, and to be able to shoot it fairly well. In June he will be graduating from High School. He has not decided for sure what path he is going to take from here, but he is seriously considering military service and leaning toward the Marine Corps. Skirmishing is a family affair with the Clarks, and there is some sadness at the prospect of him not being here for the next National. They’ve all skirmished together since back in the days of Mike shooting in the Youth BB Gunn competition. “Such is the plight of all young skirmishers when they reach the point in life where they must go in search of their future endeavors,” says his mother, Denise.
NRA Young Skirmisher Award, 2nd Place
Michael Clark
As for Mike, he’d like to congratulate Grant Ostner on his repeat as first place winner. Despite their young ages, they are both old skirmishers at heart, having been competitors and colleagues since they were younger and shot BB Gun side by side.
Congratulations to Grant Ostner and Michael Clark, NRA Young Skirmisher Award Winners.

NRA Senior Skirmisher Award By Wayne Jordan At each National Skirmish the N-SSA awards the top two musket shooters age 65 and older with the Senior Skirmisher Award. It is based on their aggregate individual musket scores.
The winners of the Spring 2019 National NRA Senior Skirmisher Awards are
Dennis Heuer and Ben Waits. (Both men also won first place Senior Skirmisher at Nationals in 2018.)
Dennis Heuer of the Dismal Swamp Rangers, with a Musket Aggregate score of 184-01X, had a very memorable National. In addition to winning First Place Senior Skirmisher, he also won the Felker Trophy for the highest musket aggregate of all N-SSA shooters who participated in this National. Dennis offered to explain his approach to shooting individual targets and I’ll let him explain it in his own words. “Shooting all five guns: musket, carbine, revolver, repeater, and smoothbore, can be a challenge to shoot in one day. My shooting plan at National and local skirmishes is to shoot my 25 yard smoothbore first, followed by all firearms at 50 yards, then ending with all at 100 yards. One of the challenges is to let go of a bad shot that ends up in NRA Senior Skirmisher, 1st Place the 7 or 8 ring. With good equipment, it is the mental aspect that is the Dennis Heuer most challenging. I like to get in a rhythm in shooting, like on the team events. However, for individual shooting, I find it best to pause after loading, control my breathing and then bring the firearm up to aim. Another mental challenge is to force myself to bring the gun down if held too long trying to get the correct sight picture. It is better to start over; gun parallel to the ground, arms extended to get the blood into the arms, control my breathing, and then start over, bringing the gun up and getting the correct sight picture.” Dennis is retiring this spring from 45 years of working in the Engineering and Transportation field, and is looking forward to attending more skirmishes outside the Tidewater Region with his newfound freedom.
Ben Waits of the Nansemond Guards took 2nd place with a Musket Aggregate score of 178-01X. Ben has been an N-SSA member since 1977 and is a frequent Senior Skirmisher winner. He prefers his Richmond Artillery model musket with a Hodgdon bullet, 39 grains of GOEX, and a peep sight that helps with his astigmatism. He practices frequently, but with very few shots. Ben is most comfortable concentrating on getting a few individual shots right rather than shooting lots of lead. He also is very conscious of the changes that take place over time in the performance of the gun, the ammo, and himself, and commences his Spring shooting each year with an open mind to making adjustments as needed. Ben has persevered as a strong shooter despite having a rough last couple of years. Due to an eye injury, he has had to switch to shooting left handed. He is also recovering from a broken leg incurred in a biking accident last fall.
NRA Senior Skirmisher, 2nd Place
Benjamin T. Waits
Ben is also a retired engineer, specializing in work on aircraft carriers. His other hobbies include bicycle riding and golf. Awards presented by Philip Schreier, Senior Curator, National Rifle Association of America Museums / Field Editor, American Rifleman (right); and David Booz, N-SSA National Commander (left).

Support the N-SSA through Charitable Giving JOIN THE N-SSA SOCIETY OF COLOR BEARERS WITH YOUR DONATION TODAY! By Wayne Jordan
AMAZON SMILE sent me a notice recently saying that they have donated $1,339.66 to the N-SSA so far. This is free money to our treasury! If you buy through Amazon, and who doesn’t, sign up for the Amazon Smile program and support the North-South Skirmish Association. Each time you shop, sign in under smile.amazon.com and be sure you see the words “Supporting North-South Skirmish Association” near the upper left hand corner of the page. If you click on those words, you’ll see a link called Your AmazonSmile Impact where you can track the money that Amazon donates from your purchases, and the total donations Amazon is making.
DONATE BY PAYROLL DEDUCTION – If your employer allows charitable donations by payroll deduction, ask them to set you up for donations to the N-SSA. You will probably need to provide information to the employer in order to set this up, so find out what they require and contact Wayne Jordan about it at wvjordan@aol.com. Many large employers will match your donations when you set this up. That can be a lot of free money.
Also, we have received a donation through the United Way. If you are already donating through them, check to see if the N-SSA is listed in your plan.
DONATE NOW You can donate to the N-SSA at anytime, so how about now? Just fill out the form below and mail it in with your donation. You can also stop by the Doc’s Place store in Sutler Row during Nationals to donate by credit card or check. We’ll mail back a receipt letter and a couple decals you can use to adorn your trailer or vehicle.
Please include this information when submitting your charitable donation. Name ______________________________________ Team ___________________________ Competitor #__________ Address ____________________________________ City __________________________ State _____ Zip _________ Email ________________________________________________ Phone _________________ Amount $___________ Make checks payable to N-SSA. All donors will receive a letter of receipt by mail. The N-SSA is a 501(c)3 organization and donations are eligible for tax deductions. Mail your donation with the above information to: N-SSA, c/o Wayne Jordan Charitable Donations Committee 8606 Eagle Glen Terrace Fairfax Station, VA 22039

First Married Couple Earns National Skirmish Director Stars By Wayne Jordan The N-SSA has achieved a new first. A married couple, Judy Stoneburner and Mike “Beaver” Stoneburner, have both earned the National Skirmish Director Gold Star. The N-SSA has come a long way in the last 30 years, and our commitment to gender equality cannot be questioned. The inclusion of women members has greatly strengthened our organization. Judy started out as the Adjutant at the 112th National, working with Larry Brockmiller, who was the Skirmish Director. But Larry had a rough year and was unable to fulfill his duties. Judy stepped up and worked with Larry seamlessly to organize the skirmish with no disruption. Larry insisted that Judy be awarded the star for running that year’s skirmish since she took the lead in running it. “I just did my job as Adjutant. I considered my job to include knowing the Director’s job and to be ready to fill in as needed. I was happy to be able to contribute to that degree.” More recently, Beaver was the director of the 138th National last Fall. He took on the job out of a sense of duty. He believes that everyone should do their part in the organization, and he felt ready to step up and take this task on. Both Judy and Beaver feel greatly honored to be asked to perform the job of National Skirmish Director.

REGIONAL NEWS - Deep South
Deep South March 15-17, 2019 Skirmish Results By Steve Sheldon The second skirmish of the 2019 Deep South season got underway with another weekend of nearly perfect weather. Despite being the tail-end of one of the wettest winters of recent memory, the weather was on our side with one of the rare breaks in the rain falling right on the skirmish weekend. Spring was still feeling shy about making an appearance at the Brierfield Ironworks State Park, so this made 4 skirmishes in a row where having a coat on hand was a good choice! The 20th Georgia Volunteer Infantry were our gracious hosts, opening the competition to individual skirmishers on Friday afternoon. Once the early birds had had their fill of poking holes in paper, the range closed down for the evening. Saturday morning our regional tradition of the 15-yard Revolver match kicked off the day. Five teams spun up their wheel guns, and when they were empty, the smoke revealed the 44 th Georgia in first place, followed by the 4th Louisiana in second, with the 3rd Georgia taking third. Individuals picked up again until lunch, where hamburgers, hotdogs, and bratwurst were in ample supply from the concession stand, along with sodas and coffee to wash it down. After lunch the team competition got underway with the Smoothbore match. Five teams competed for the top slots. Forrest’s Escort took first place, followed by the 4th Louisiana, and finally the 3rd Georgia taking third. The Smoothbore match was followed by the Carbine match, again with five teams on the line. Here again Forrest’s Escort took first place, but the 3rd Georgia trounced the 4th Louisiana, taking second and third respectively. Sunday morning began with the opening ceremonies, quickly followed by the Musket match. As we cleaned up to go home, out of the five teams competing, the scorecard showed Forrest’s Escort in their usual first place, followed by the 14th Mississippi, and finally the 3rd Georgia. The next Deep South Region skirmish will be held again at Brierfield Ironworks State Park, April 26 th through the 28th, hosted by the 14th Mississippi Infantry Regiment.

REGIONAL NEWS - Deep South Deep South April 26-27, 2019 Skirmish Results By Steve Sheldon If there was ever a perfect skirmish weekend as far as the weather goes, this weekend was it. The 14 th Mississippi’s skirmish found itself on a weekend that was the absolute epitome of perfect spring days. Cloudless skies, warm, breezy weather, and a hearty turnout was to be found at our old haunt, the Brierfield Ironworks State Park.
Individual shooters enjoying the perfect weather. As usual, the host team got things going on Friday afternoon with individual matches. With the sun now setting later in the evening, all comers were able to shoot their fill. Saturday morning the traditional Deep South 15-Yard Revolver match only found three teams up to the 8am challenge, so everyone was guaranteed to walk away with a medal. When all was said and done the rankings found Forrest’s Escort in first, followed by the 44th Georgia, with the 4th Louisiana bringing up the rear. After the debris was cleared away from the Revolver match, the field was again set back up for individuals, which continued until lunch. The host team kept everyone full of drinks and food with both breakfast and lunch being served out of the snack shack. With folks having had a chance to grab a bite to eat, the fun resumed with the team events. First up was the Smoothbore match. We had a great turnout with 6 Smoothbore teams on the line. At the end of the show the leaderboard showed Forrest’s Escort A team in the lead, followed by Terry’s Texas Rangers, who made the long journey from the farthest reach of the Deep South Region to Brierfield, followed by the 3 rd Georgia taking 3rd place. Forrest’s Escort also fielded a B team. Next up was the Carbine match. Again we had 6 teams vying for medals, and when the smoke cleared first place went to Forrest’s Escort A team, followed by the 3rd Georgia, with Terry’s Texas Rangers taking third. Saturday evening found nearly everyone enjoying the fine catfish and pulled pork dinner spread provided by the host team. Sunday morning was another fine weather day that saw Opening Ceremonies and the Musket match. We had an astounding turnout of 8 teams on the field for Musket. It has been a very long time since we had that many teams on the line in the Deep South Region. When all the rounds were downrange, Forrest’s Escort was in the lead, followed by Terry’s Texas Rangers in second, with the 3rd Georgia taking third place. It will be a long spell until the next Deep South skirmish, as we will not return to Brierfield Ironworks State Park again until August 23 – 25th, hosted by the 3rd and 44th Georgia teams.

REGIONAL NEWS - Northwest Territory NWT Active on Memorial Day 2019 By Bruce Miller Members of the NWT took an active part in the Memorial Day service in the City of Birmingham, Michigan, a large suburb north of Detroit. Members of the 1st Michigan Infantry and the 15th Virginia Cavalry raised the colors to full staff then lowered to half-staff to open the service and then closed it by firing a resounding musket volley to proceed taps and close the ceremony. Birmingham has held a Memorial Day service annually since the creation of the Oakland County Civil War Monument in 1869. The patriotic program included addresses of historical interest, popular songs, wreath laying at the monuments, and live music provided by the Birmingham Concert Band. Members of the Oakland County Camp of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War also participated in the service by laying a memorial wreath at the base of the monument. This year’s service commemorated the 75th anniversary of D-Day, June 6, 1944 and all veterans were recognized.
NWT members included Bruce Miller (1st Michigan), Paul Lipka (15thVirginia Cavalry who “galvanized” for the occasion), Mark Miller, and Tom Lagoe (both 1st Michigan).

50 Years, One Team - The List Grows Again By Wayne Jordan In recent editions I have been listing 50-year members who have served all those years on the same team. And the names keep rolling in. DON ROLLETTE of the Division of Marines has been a member of that team for 62 years. He is a proud combat veteran of the USMC, and is also proud to have never missed a Veterans Skirmish with the N-SSA.
TOM BARKER of the Delaware Blues has never changed teams. In 1961, at the age of 17, Tom was a founding member of the team, and is now the only one still living. He has every intention of sticking around long enough to force the N-SSA to start giving out 75 year awards. MICHAEL BENSON has also been a member of the Delaware Blues for more than 50 years (submitted by John Symborski). The following members of McNeill’s Rangers have all served 50 years or more on that team. They vow that their team will be the first to have a member claim a 75-year award in the N-SSA. (Submitted by John Zebelean.)

Do you know of even more 50-year members who spent all their years on the same team? If so, send a note about them to my attention at wvjordan@aol.com.
