❯❯ Steamboat Springs has been a home to the arts since the first settlers arrived. What inspired them then continues to inspire creatives today – which is probably why so many artists call the area home. Steamboat Creates, a Colorado Certified Creative District, believes in the power of creativity to inspire human connections, create social change and support economic vibrancy throughout Colorado, especially in rural areas like Steamboat Springs. We believe in the practice of creation, and in the artists and entrepreneurs who contribute to our rich culture and the vast benefits of our creative economy. We support and encourage the innovators, creators, change-makers and dreamers who improve our quality of life and make Routt County creative. We focus on strengthening the vitality of visual, performing and literary arts through promotion, resources and opportunities to learn. We believe in bold innovation and the invaluable contributions the arts bring to this beautiful part of the world. There are countless ways to get involved and inspired, including workshops for beginners and more advanced artists, youth art programs and local theater. Visit the newly renovated Steamboat Art Museum, the historic Depot Art Center or simply explore the natural environment that has inspired artists for over 100 years. Experience Steamboat’s art and culture at the Chief Theater, Opera Steamboat, Strings Music Festival, fine art galleries and the Tread of Pioneers Museum. about the cover Artist
j e n n i f er b a ke r ❯❯ Jennifer Baker’s glass piece, “Storybook Stroll,” captures a quintessential Steamboat Springs view: sunlight filtering through an aspen grove. As such, it is ideally suited to be the cover art of this edition of the Yampa Valley Arts & Culture Guide. “The inspiration for this piece comes from the richness of our surroundings,” Baker says. “When I’m hiking and soaking in the surroundings, I think there is always some anticipation of what lies ahead. I think it’s that appreciation, richness and grandeur that always bring a sense of space and place.” Layering is a technique common to all of Baker’s pieces, and “Storybook Stroll” is no exception. Her artwork contains thousands upon thousands of ultra-thin sheets of glass, each with its own texture, from rough to powdery. Each of these layers requires time in the kiln, which means every piece is the result of a lengthy process. Baker was born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio, and grew up immersed

in the arts. Her uncle, a landscape designer, sent her to art camps, where she was exposed to many types of craftsmanship, but everything changed when she discovered glass. From that point on, she says, she was obsessed. Baker describes herself as a tactile person, and the hands-on nature of her art is especially appealing to her. This winter at Gallery 89, Baker unveils an art collaboration titled “Symbiosis II” with internationally renowned metal sculptor David Marshall. The show features pieces combining metal and glass, and marks the second time the two artists have collaborated, the first being “Symbiosis” in 2015. “We thought it was time for another body of work,” Baker says. “Storybook Stroll” is on display at Laundry restaurant in Steamboat Springs. Baker’s work can also be found locally at Pine Moon Fine Art, Gallery 89, the Steamboat Art Museum Store and Alpine Bank. www.jenniferbakerglassart.com

“Human Imprint” on display at Tread of Pioneers Museum
❯❯ Mother-of-pearl buttons, a shard of hand-painted china, the sole of a small shoe. These unlikely items indicate the presence of women at historic Colorado mining sites. Images of the artifacts are featured as part of the “Human Imprint” exhibition at the Tread of Pioneers Museum. The project, by artist and University of Denver professor Sarah Gjertson, explores handwork, women’s contributions and artifacts from Colorado’s historic mining sites. Through travel, research, digitized collections and cemetery records, Gjertson has uncovered lesser known histories of women in the old West. What began as a peripheral fascination during backcountry trips led to a multi-year project that includes photography, sculptural objects and printmaking works undertaken by Oehme Graphics in Steamboat Springs. “I am not interested in the ‘gold rush’ aspect of these sites but am compelled by the human imprint that remains there – the evidence of ingenuity, curious artifacts, skeletons of architectural structures and evidence of the hand,” Gjertson says. Colorado hikers are likely to have encountered historic mining towns or sites, most of which are 100-150 years old and in precarious states due to long-term exposure, neglect

and other human impacts. Some are fond of these relics, while others view them as impediments to progress. Gjertson’s interest grew after revisiting many of the sites over several years’ time, and seeing the negative effects of reclamation efforts, investor and development schemes, and restricted trail access, even on public lands. She considers these mining sites to be living museums and suggests their tug of sentimentality and nostalgia can be palpable. The artifacts are potent storytellers, Gjertson says. “Hopefully, this work is a prime vehicle to start conversations around the challenges of preservation, the relevance of local history, and the roles women played in the American West at such a pivotal time.” HUMAN IMPRINT EXHIBIT Tread of Pioneers Museum – 800 Oak St. * Through May 31 * Artist Talk – Noon, Tuesday, March 26 * Treadofpioneers.org

Songwriter Series ❯❯ A five-time Grammy winner, Americana Album of the Year nominee, Colorado native, Steamboat singer on the move, and a songwriter’s songwriter are all performing locally this winter. The Chief Theater presents its fifth annual Songwriter series from December through April. These events have gained renown for their intimate venue, innovative lineups and affordable pricing. The season kicked off in December with Strangebyrds, followed by Steamboat’s own Katie Ross. It continues throughout the winter with four distinctive performers. PETER YARROW of the legendary folk group Peter, Paul and Mary takes the stage SaturdaySunday, Jan. 26-27. The genius behind “Puff the Magic Dragon,” “Day is Done,” “Light one Candle” and “The Great Mandala” has too many awards to mention, from Grammys to double-platinum albums. Yarrow has used his platform to raise awareness of social issues ranging from homelessness to hospice care. Reimagining Art @ the Depot
BY DAGNY MCKINLEY WANTED: A new identity and new home for artists.
❯❯ When the Center for Visual Arts disbanded in September 2018, CVA member artists needed a place to show their work. They came to Steamboat Creates, Steamboat Springs’ Colorado Certified Creative District, for a solution. How could the two work together to make sure these emerging artists could continue to show their work, while current members of Steamboat Creates would also have exhibit space? A solution quickly became clear: The collective of artists, including David Lambeth, Al Reiner, Jason Santucci, Marcella Rose, Marion Kahn, Steve Bolander, Audrey Bortz and Anna Lee Lipman, would take up residence in the historic Depot Art Center’s main gallery. A home had been found – now it needed a name. The group surveyed the Depot’s location and dubbed themselves the Riverwalk Collective, as the Depot is a short walk along the river from downtown. The Riverwalk Collective launched its first exhibit in December 2018 in the Baggage Room of the Depot. In March, it moves into the main gallery, where Riverwalk artists’ work will hang through September. The exhibits feature a variety of media, from oil, watercolor and acrylics to mixed media works, photography and jewelry. Throughout the year, the Riverwalk Collective’s themed shows will include visiting artists so the exhibits will be relevant and evolving. “We couldn’t be happier to welcome the Riverwalk Collective to the Depot,” says Kim Keith, executive director of Steamboat Creates. “Their passion for, and reflections of, our town, our environment and the world we live in fall in line with who Steamboat is as a creative district.”

performance opportunities for members of our local community to share their talent or learn something new.” There’s no question that Steamboat has as many varieties of performing arts as we do hiking and ski trails. “And that’s exactly the point,” says Kim Keith, executive director of Steamboat Creates, the town’s umbrella arts organization. “Since our earliest professional company, (Perry-Mansfield -1914) the magic of Steamboat has been the connection between art and nature. There is something about the act of creation when you’re surrounded by mountains, a river, wildlife and thousands of acres of national forest. Nature awakens creativity in a profound way.” So get out there and see something – or be something!
