Zürich Opernhaus Das Opernhaus Zürich zählt zu den international führenden Kulturinstituten und produktivsten Opernhäusern der Welt. Fog and dull grey currently still determine our daily routine. It is the right time to escape to an oasis of the senses. We found that in the Ease Design Spa in Zurich West. The ‘Indian Summer Ritual’ treatment sounded promising because I wanted to recharge my batteries and experience Indian summer. At least for the next 90 minutes. There are four fragrances to choose from for your personal treatment before it all starts with a gentle flower peel. That is followed by a refreshing shower and a return to the massage bed for a gentle and relaxing full-body massage. The balm is very refreshing and exudes a delicate scent. The selected fragrance accompanies you during the entire treatment. I was able to get more than just an ounce of warmth and felt deeply relaxed. Certainly, a real treat for body, organism and soul.

The LABO Spa in the vibrant city centre of Zurich has much to offer for body, spirit and senses. I went on a 90-minute journey of regeneration away from the daily routine and hectic rush. The locker was filled with a bathrobe, towels and a moisturising cream. The journey can begin after a quick change. My masseuse collected me from the ‘cocooning’ relaxation room and took me to the treatment room decorated with candles. She explained the procedure to me in a very professional way and started the treatment with the wonderful name ‘Hawai`i-uhane’. This is based on the Hawaiian Lomi Lomi treatment and is characterised by the unique way of touching. It removes tension and balances out energy deficits. A very oily treat. Soothing movements of the hands, long wavy massage strokes and gentle joint relaxation brought me into a state of complete letting-go. I experienced complete and almost meditative relaxation.

Diese haben wir im Ease Design Spa in Zürich West gefunden. Die Behandlung „Indian Summer Ritual“ klingt vielversprechend, denn schliesslich wollte ich Energie tanken und den Sommer Indiens erleben. Zumindest für die nächsten 90 Minuten. Es gibt vier Duftrichtungen, die man für seine persönliche Behandlung wählen kann, bevor es mit einem sanften Blütenpeeling beginnt. Danach gibt es eine erfrischende Dusche. Zurück auf der Massageliege folgen leichte, entspannende Massagegriffe am ganzen Körper. Der Balsam ist sehr erfrischend und duftet zart. Der ausgewählte Duft ist mein ständiger Begleiter während des gesamten Treatments. Ich konnte mehr als ein Quäntchen Wärme erhaschen und bin total tiefenentspannt. In jedem Fall eine Wohltat für Körper, Organismus und Psyche.

Das LABO Spa im pulsierenden Stadtkern von Zürich hat für Körper, Geist und Sinne vieles zu bieten. Ich begab mich auf eine 90-minütige Reise der Regeneration abseits von Alltag und Hektik. Der Spind war gefüllt mit einem Bademantel, Handtüchern und einer Feuchtigkeitscreme. Schnell umgezogen, kann die Reise starten. Wir haben uns über die letzten Jahre eine kleine Oase geschaffen,

in welcher wir sehr gezielt und individuell auf die Bedürfnisse der Kunden eingehen können. Es werden von Montag bis Samstag Trainingslektionen à 60 Minuten in der Gruppe mit maximal zehn Teilnehmern oder auch Privatlektionen angeboten. Ausserdem werden Power Plate®-Lektionen individuell vor oder nach den Trainingsklassen durchgeführt. Die drei Instruktorinnen, welche die Trainings auf ihre individuelle Art und Weise gestalten, bieten den Kunden ein sehr abwechslungsreiches Trainingserlebnis. Für wen ist die Methode geeignet? Die Methode spricht ein sehr breites Spektrum an Kundinnen und Kunden an – unabhängig von Fitnesszustand, Alter oder Gewicht. Die sanfte Trainingsmethode vernetzt und kräftigt durch gezielten Einsatz des Beckenbodens die innersten Schichten der Tiefenmuskulatur und bringt so dem gesamten Skelett den nötigen Schutz und die richtige Aufspannung. Insbesondere bei Kunden mit Rücken- oder Nackenproblemen sind sehr gute Erfolge zu verzeichnen.

What can a client expect at your studio in Kilchberg? Over the recent years, we have created a small oasis in which we can fulfil the needs of our clients in a very individual and targeted way. Training lessons of 60 minutes each in a group of maximum 10 participants or private lessons are offered on Monday to Saturday. Power Plate lessons are also given individually before or after the training lessons. The 3 female instructors, who design the training in an individual way, offer the clients a very diverse training experience. For whom is the method suitable? The method is suitable for a wide range of clients, regardless of fitness condition, age or weight. The gentle training method links and strengthens the inner layers of the deep muscles through targeted use of the pelvic floor and thus gives the entire skeleton the required protection and the upright posture. Very successful treatment results have particularly been achieved for clients with back or neck problems.

Anstelle von Brille und Kontaktlinsen entscheiden sich immer mehr Menschen für die Korrektur ihrer Fehlsichtigkeit mittels Laserbehandlung oder Linsenimplantation. Wir haben Dr. Eduard Haefliger, Schweizer Koryphäe auf dem Gebiet der refraktiven Augenchirurgie und Gründer der Vista Klinik und der LASER VISTA Augenlaserzentren, zum Experten-Gespräch getroffen.

Sprechen Sie bei diesen Forschungsarbeiten auch von der Pionierarbeit, mit der Sie in Fachkreisen bekannt sind? Vor bald 30 Jahren konnte ich in der Tat in den USA sehr interessante Forschungsarbeiten zu diesem Thema an Primaten durchführen. Wenn man bedenkt, dass rund 100 Mio. Menschen im Jahr alterssichtig werden, dann ist dies ein hoch spannendes Forschungsgebiet. Damals war aber bereits

klar, dass der Nachbau einer künstlichen Linse, die eine dynamische Akkommodation vollziehen kann, für eine Anwendung am Menschen noch einige Zeit in Anspruch nehmen würde. Deshalb habe ich den klinischen Weg als Chefarzt in der Augenabteilung am Kantonsspital Liestal gewählt. Parallel dazu habe ich die Vista Klinik aufgebaut, und in weiterer Folge die LASER VISTA Augenlaserzentren. Hatten Sie nicht auch in der Schweiz eine Vorreiterrolle bei der Einführung der modernen Lasertechnologie? Es ist tatsächlich so, dass wir einige Laserarten bzw. Chirurgiearten erstmals in der Schweiz eingesetzt haben. Seit 1993 arbeiten wir mit dem Excimer-Laser, im Jahr 2000 haben wir den ersten Femto-Laser hierzulande angewendet. Vielleicht kurz zur Erläuterung: Beim Femto-LASIK-Verfahren wird mit dem Femtosekunden-Laser eine dünne Hornhautlamelle präpariert. Dieser «Flap» wird dann aufgeklappt, sodass mit dem Excimer-Laser die eigentliche Fehlsichtigkeit auf der freigelegten Hornhaut korrigiert werden kann. Der Femto-Laser ersetzt hier das Mikrokeratom, eine Art «feiner Hobel», welches bei der klassischen LASIK Anwendung findet. Die FemtoMethode ist somit präziser und sicherer. Ebenfalls Vorreiter in der Schweiz waren wir vor mehr als zwei Jahren auf dem Gebiet der Femto-Chirurgie für Kataraktoperationen, also die Behandlung des Grauen Stars. Zur heutigen Vista-Gruppe gehören neben der Vista Klinik auch die LASER VISTA Augenlaserzentren. Was hat Sie zu deren Aufbau bewogen?

Besonders in der Augenmedizin existieren hoch spezialisierte Teilgebiete, die nur dann auf internationalem Topniveau angeboten werden können, wenn die entsprechende Erfahrung vorhanden ist. Einzelne Einzugsgebiete in der Schweiz sind für eine genügende Anzahl an Fällen einfach zu klein. Deshalb arbeiten wir an mehreren Standorten – von Basel über Zürich bis Pfäffikon SZ und Chur. Mit über 200 Mitarbeitenden verfügen wir über ein umfangreiches Experten-Netzwerk. Viele unserer Spezialistinnen und Spezialisten pendeln zwischen den Augenzentren; so gewährleisten wir den Patientinnen und Patienten eine bestmögliche Behandlung. Mit 25 000 Operationen pro Jahr verfügen wir auch über viele Spezialfälle, die es uns ermöglichen, sämtliche Teilgebiete der Augenmedizin und Augenchirurgie auf hohem Niveau abzudecken. Die hohen Fallzahlen ermöglichen uns ausserdem die solide Ausbildung von jungen Augenchirurginnen und Augenchirurgen. Wie viele Operationen haben Sie selbst durchgeführt? In Summe waren es etwa 70 000 – ich bin leider schon ein alter Handwerker (lacht). Aufgrund meiner 30-jährigen Erfahrung kann ich gut erkennen, welche Lösung für welchen Patienten das beste Ergebnis verspricht. Die sorgfältige Untersuchung und ein ausführliches Beratungsgespräch im Vorfeld sind die Basis für unsere hohe Erfolgsrate. Wir erarbeiten mit dem Kunden immer eine individuelle, bedürfnisorientierte Lösung. Herzlichen Dank für das Gespräch.

Herr Dr. Haefliger, Sie gelten als internationaler Experte auf dem Gebiet der refraktiven Chirurgie. Stand die Behebung von Fehlsichtigkeiten für ein Leben ohne Brille schon immer in Ihrem Fokus? Von Anfang an war ich fasziniert von den Möglichkeiten, Fehlsichtigkeit und sogar Alterssichtigkeit ohne Brille zu korrigieren und den Komfort beim Sehen ins Zentrum zu stellen – etwa indem ein Auge für das Sehen in die Ferne und das andere für die Nähe korrigiert wird, sodass eine alterssichtige Person die Menükarte auf der Sonnenterrasse auch ohne Brille noch gut lesen kann. Ist diese sogenannte «Monovision» für die betreffende Person nicht die geeignete Behandlungsform, können mittlerweile multifokale Linsen implantiert werden. Diese bilden – vergleichbar mit Gleitsichtbrillen – mehrere Distanzen statisch scharf ab. Die Forschungsarbeiten gehen aber in Richtung dynamische Implantate. Ein Kleinkind kann den Marienkäfer nicht nur auf der Nasenspitze, sondern auch wenn er davonfliegt, in jeder Distanz absolut scharf erkennen. Diese «dynamische Akkommodation» können wir mittels refraktiver Chirurgie bis heute noch nicht absolut zuverlässig nachbilden – sie wird aber die Behandlungsmethode der Zukunft sein.

Better eyesight in an instant

Dr. Haefliger, you are regarded as being an international expert in the field of refractive surgery. Has the correction of ametropia for a life without spectacles always been your focus? I have been fascinated right from the start by the possibilities of correcting ametropia and even presbyopia for a life without spectacles and focussing on the convenience of correct vision – for example by correcting one eye for distance vision and the other for near vision so that a presbyopic person can still read the menu on the sun terrace without spectacles. If this so-called «monovision» is not a suitable treatment method for the person concerned, multifocal lenses can nowadays be implanted. These offer precise static vision at multiple distances just like varifocal spectacles. Research is however going in the direction of dynamic implants. An infant can not only see a ladybird on its nose but also when it flies away with absolutely precise vision at any distance. We have not yet been able to absolutely reliably simulate this «dynamic accommodation» by means of refractive surgery but it will be the preferred treatment method in the future. Are you also talking about the pioneering work for which you are renowned among experts when you mention this research?

About 30 years ago, I was indeed able to do very interesting research work in this area on primates in the USA. It is a very exciting field of research if you consider the fact that about 100 million people per year become presbyopic. But it was already evident at that time that the construction of an artificial lens capable of dynamic accommodation would still take some time for human applications. I therefore chose the clinical career path as a chief physician in the ophthalmology department at the Liestal canton hospital. At the same time, I established the Vista Clinic and later the LASER VISTA eye laser centres. Did you not also play a pioneering role in the introduction of modern laser technologies in Switzerland? Yes, we were the first to use some laser types or surgery types in Switzerland. We have worked with an excimer laser since 1993 and we used the first Femto laser in this country in the year 2000. Perhaps as a short explanation: With the Femto-LASIK method, a thin corneal lamella is dissected with the femtosecond laser. This «flap» is then lifted so that the actual defective vision (ametropia) can be corrected on the exposed cornea with the excimer laser. The Femto laser replaces the microkeratome, a sort of «fine blade» used for the classic LASIK application. The Femto method is therefore more precise and safer. We were also pioneers in the field of Femto-assisted cataract surgery, i.e. the treatment of eye lens clouding, in Switzerland more than two years ago.

Today’s Vista Group includes the Vista Clinic and the LASER VISTA eye laser centres. What made you feel inclined to set them up? Particularly ophthalmology has highly specialised areas that can only be offered at a worldwide top quality level if adequate experience is available. Some catchment areas in Switzerland are simply too small for a sufficient number of cases. We therefore work at several locations – ranging from Basle, Zurich, and Pfäffikon (Schwyz) to Chur. With more than 200 staff, we have a comprehensive network of experts. Many of our specialists commute between the eye centres to ensure a best possible treatment for our patients. With 25,000 operations per year, we have many special cases that allow us to cover all areas of ophthalmology and ophthalmic surgery at a high quality level. The large number of cases also allows us to provide young ophthalmic surgeons with first-class training. How many operations have you done yourself? In total, about 70,000 – I am unfortunately already an old craftsman (laughing). Due to my 30 years of experience, I can decide very well which solution promises the best result for which patient. The prior thorough examination and detailed consultation form the basis of our high success rate. We always work out a customised, need-oriented solution with the patient. Instead of wearing spectacles or contact lenses, an increasing number of people decide to have their ametropia corrected by laser treatment or lens implantation. We met Dr. Eduard Haefliger, the great Swiss authority on refractive eye surgery and founder of the Vista Clinic and the LASER VISTA eye laser centres, for an expert interview.

Я сразу заинтересовался возможностью исправлять аметропию и даже пресбиопию без очков, создавая комфортное сочетание – один глаз настраивается на дальнее виденье, а другой на ближнее, таким образом, у человека с пресбиопией сохраняется способность прочесть меню на солнечной террасе, не надевая очки. Если конкретному человеку не подходит такая форма лечения, как « моновидение », то можно имплантировать мультифокальные линзы. Они обеспечивают четкость на более дальних дистанциях в статике, по сравнению с прогрессивными очками. Тем не менее, наши исследования посвящены динамическим имплантатам. Ребенок может сопровождать взглядом слетающую с кончика носа божью коровку на любом расстоянии без потери четкости. Пока еще мы не в состоянии абсолютно воссоздать такую « динамическую аккомодацию » с помощью рефрактивной хирургии, но она станет методом коррекции будущего. Говоря об исследованиях, Вы подразумеваете и ту новаторскую работу, сделавшую Вас известным в кругу специалистов? 30 лет назад в США я мог проводить очень интересные исследования по этой теме на приматах. Тот факт, что пресбиопия или близорукость развивается почти у 100 млн. людей в год, делает эту исследовательскую область крайне увлекательной. Уже тогда стало понятно, что на производство предназначенной для людей искусственной линзы, осуществляющей динамическую аккомодацию, понадобится еще немало времени. Поэтому я продолжил практику в качестве главного врача отделения офтальмологии центральной больницы кантона, в городе Листаль. Параллельно я занимался созданием клиники Vista, а в дальнейшем и офтальмологического лазерного центра LASER VISTA.

Но и в Швейцарии Вы сыграли ключевую роль во внедрении современных лазерных технологий? Действительно, некоторые типы лазера и виды операций мы впервые использовали в Швейцарии. С 1993 года мы работаем с Эксимерным лазером, в 2000 году мы впервые применили здесь Фемто-лазер. Пожалуй, стоит объяснить: во время коррекции методом Фемто-LASIK фемтосекундный лазер формирует тонкий роговичный лоскут. Затем, этот лоскуток отделяется, что делает возможным непосредственную коррекцию аметропии эксимерным лазером на открытой роговице. Фемто-лазер заменяет микрокератом, нечто вроде « деликатного рубанка », который используется в стандартном методе LASIK. Таким образом, фемто-метод точнее и безопасней. Точно так же более двух лет мы были лидерами Швейцарии в фемто-хирургии, применяемой для удаления катаракты, то есть в борьбе с « серой звездой ». Сегодня к группе Vista, кроме клиники Vista, относится еще и офтальмологический лазерный центр LASER VISTA. Что побудило Вас к его созданию? В офтальмологии есть узкоспециальные подобласти, которые могут быть представлены на высшем международном уровне только при наличии соответствующего опыта. Отдельные районы в Швейцарии попросту слишком малы для обеспечения достаточного количества случаев. Поэтому мы работаем шире – от Базеля и Цюриха до Пфеффикона и Кура. Наша сеть экспертов охватывает 200 сотрудников. Многие из наших специалистов успевают наведываться в несколько офтальмологических

центров, чтобы обеспечить пациентам наилучшее лечение. Мы проводим 25 000 операций в год и сталкиваемся со многими интересными случаями, которые позволяют нам применить все возможности офтальмологии и специальной хирургии. Тривиальные случаи, в свою очередь, позволяют нам инвестировать в образование молодых хирургов. Сколько операций Вы выполнили сами? В сумме около 70 000 – я уже старый мастер, к сожалению (смеется). Благодаря 30-летнему опыту я могу распознать, какое решение обеспечит пациенту наилучший результат. Zeit ist mein grösster Luxus! Das dreisprachige Luxusmagazin Zurich Deluxe traf die wunderschöne Schauspielerin Carmen Chaplin, Enkelin des berühmten Charlie Chaplin, im Hotel Park Hyatt Zürich für ein Interview anlässlich der Eröffnungsfeier der Boutique von Jaeger-LeCoultre.

Seit 1833 gelingt es Jaeger-LeCoultre, das richtige Gleichgewicht zwischen Natur und Kultur, Innovation und Tradition, Wachstum und Umweltschutz, internationaler Expansion und heimischen Wurzeln zu finden. Welche Motivationen haben Sie im Leben? Aus künstlerischer Sicht will ich schöne Dinge schaffen, Filme machen und Regie führen sowie eine gute Mutter für meine Tochter sein. Sie ist ein grosser Motivator. Ich finde, dass sich alles, was ich mache, während ich nicht bei ihr bin, wirklich lohnen muss. Ich bin wählerischer geworden, wie ich meine Zeit verbringe und was ich mache. Ich liebe es, mit unterschiedlichen Menschen künstlerisch zusammenzuarbeiten. Jaeger-LeCoultre schuf und schafft legendäre Zeitmesser wie zum Beispiel die Modelle Reverso, Memovox, Atmos, Duomètre, Rendez-Vous und viele andere. Wann sind Sie diesen präzisen und zauberhaften Uhren zum ersten Mal begegnet? Als ich ein Kind war, besass mein Grossvater eine Jaeger-LeCoultre, und er gab sie weiter an meinen Vater, und mein Vater gab sie weiter an meine Mutter. Dies war das erste Mal, dass ich eine dieser Uhren in ihrem Schmuckkästchen gesehen habe. Ich habe immer versucht, sie zu tragen, aber ich war zu klein. Ich besuchte auch die Manufaktur und die "Heritage Gallery" im Vallée de Joux. Auf diese Weise habe ich erkannt, dass die Uhrmacherei eine Kunstform und Leidenschaft ist. Frau Chaplin, haben Sie eine Lieblingssammlung? Ich liebe es, die Vintage-Uhren zu tragen, aber heute trage ich die Grande Reverso Lady Ultra Thin in Roségold, eingefasst mit Diamanten. Die Kollektion Reverso ist eine der seltenen wahren Ikonen der Luxusuhrmacherei. Es handelt sich um die legendäre Wendeuhr, die in den 1930er-Jahren erfunden wurde. Ich muss sie auf der Rückseite gravieren lassen (lacht). Jaeger-LeCoultre leitet 57 Boutiquen in der ganzen Welt. Zürich gehört seit dem 27. November 2013 dazu. Könnten Sie Zürich in fünf Worten beschreiben? Das ist wirklich schwierig, weil dies mein erster Besuch hier ist. Ich habe nur den Hauptbahnhof, das Hotel und die wunderschöne Jaeger-LeCoultre-Boutique an der exklusiven Bahnhofstrasse gesehen.

Sie sind eine erfolgreiche Schauspielerin, arbeiten in den Vereinigten Staaten und in Europa, reisen viel und sind, wie ich vermute, ständig in Eile. Was genau bedeutet Zeit für Sie? Im Moment möchte ich die Zeit dehnen. Für mich ist Zeit der grösste Luxus. Ich möchte jeden Moment geniessen, ohne auf die Zeit zu achten, weil sie sehr schnell verfliegt. Es scheint, als ob ich alles verschönern und ein qualitativ gutes Leben führen möchte. Danke für das Interview.

Wo halten Sie sich am liebsten in der Schweiz auf? Mir gefällt Gruyère und Montreux, meine Eltern wohnten dort, und mein Grossvater hatte ein Haus in Veuvey. Ich liebe die ländliche Umgebung von Städten; ich bevorzuge es, in deren Nähe zu wohnen. Ich pendle zwischen London und Paris. Meine Lieblingsstadt war New York, bevor ich Mutter wurde.

Time is my biggest luxury The trilingual Zurich Deluxe Magazine met the beautiful actress Carmen Chaplin and granddaughter of the famous Charlie Chaplin for an interview at the Park Hyatt Zürich in celebration of the boutique opening of Jaeger-LeCoultre.

Since 1833 Jaeger-LeCoultre has proved able to strike just the right balance between nature and culture, innovation and tradition, growth and respect for the environment, international expansion and local roots. What are your motivations in life? I think, artistically it is making beautiful things, making movies, directing films and to be a good mother to my daughter, she is a big motivator. I feel that everything that I do, when I am not with her, has to be worthwhile. I am more selective in what I am doing. I enjoy having many artistic collaborations with different people. Jaeger-LeCoultre created and creates legendary timepieces like for example the Reverso, the Memovox, the Atmos, the Duomètre, the Rendez-Vous and many others. When was your first point of contact with these precise and magic watches? When I was a child, my grandfather owned a Jaeger-LeCoultre and he gave it to my father and my father gave it to my mother. This was the first time I saw one of these watches in her jewellery box. I always tried to wear it, but I was too small. I also visited the manufacture and the Heritage Gallery in Vallée de Joux. So I realised that watchmaking is an art form and a passion. Madame Chaplin, do you have a favourite collection? I love wearing the vintage pieces but today I am wearing the Grande Reverso Lady Ultra Thin in pink gold set with diamonds. The Reverso is one of the rare true icons of luxury watchmaking. It is the legendary reversible watch invented in the 1930s. I must engrave it on the back (laughs).

Jaeger-LeCoultre manages 57 boutiques all over the world. Zurich has been one of them since November 27th, 2013. Could you describe Zurich in five words? It is really difficult because this is my first visit here. I only saw the main station, the hotel and the beautiful JaegerLeCoultre boutique surrounded by the exclusive Bahnhofstrasse. Where is your favourite place to be in Switzerland? I like Gruyère and Montreux, my parents lived there and my grandfather had a house in Veuvey. I love the countryside of cities; I prefer living close to them. Now I am based between London and Paris. My favourite city was New York before I became a mother. You are a successful actress, working in the States and in Europe, travelling a lot and I guess you are always in a hurry. What does time exactly mean for you? At the moment, I like time to expand. For me, time is the biggest luxury. I love to enjoy every moment not being aware of time because it goes by very fast. It seems like I want to make everything nice and spend life in quality. Я считаю, все, что я делаю, когда ее нет рядом, должно быть поистине стоящим. Я стала более разборчива в отношении траты времени и того, чем я занимаюсь. Мне нравится сотрудничать с различными людьми в сфере искусства. Jaeger-LeCoultre создавала и продолжает создавать легендарные хронометры, например, модели Reverso, Memovox, Atmos, Duomètre, Rendez-Vous и многие другие. Сейчас я живу между Лондоном и Парижем. Мой любимый город – Нью-Йорк, пока я не стала мамой. Вы успешная актриса, работаете в Соединенных Штатах и Европе, много путешествуете, и, можно предположить, постоянно торопитесь. Насколько Вы цените время? Сейчас я мечтаю растянуть время. The preparations for the reoccurrence of the worldwide most important watch and jewellery event in 2014 are in full swing.

In wenigen Tagen, vom 27. März bis 3. April 2014, werden über 150'000 Besucher sowie rund 3'500 Medienvertreter aus aller Welt in Basel erwartet. Die alljährlich in Basel stattfindende Uhren- und Schmuckmesse Baselworld hat sich in den vergangenen Jahren zum Event der Superlative entwickelt. Der Begriff Messe wird dem internationalen Branchenevent heute kaum mehr gerecht. In den von Herzog & de Meuron entworfenen spektakulären Ausstellungshallen wird innerhalb von zwei Monaten und mit rund 20'000 Arbeitskräften eine eigentliche Stadt mit mehrgeschossigen Gebäuden errichtet, welche die berühmten Shoppingmeilen im Inund Ausland in vielerlei Hinsicht übertreffen. Beachtlich sind auch die Besucherzahlen aus dem Fernen Osten – insbesondere diejenigen aus Hongkong und China steigen seit mehreren Jahren kontinuierlich an. Auch an der vergangenen Baselworld 2013 zählte der Veranstalter zahlreiche Besucher aus dieser Weltregion. Uhren- und Schmuckbrands haben sich in den vergangenen zehn Jahren zu wichtigen Taktgebern der Lifestylebranche entwickelt. Immer öfter holen sich Mode- und andere Designer sowie Marketingexperten aus den verschiedensten Branchen ihre Inspirationen an diesem weltweit einzigartigen Event in Basel.

In a few days, from 27th March to 3rd April 2014, more than 150,000 visitors and about 3,500 media representatives from around the world are awaited in Basle. The Baselworld watch and jewellery trade fair that takes place in Basle every year has developed into a superlative event during the past few years. The term trade fair no longer does justice to the international sector event. An actual town with multi-storey buildings better than the famous domestic and foreign shopping miles in many respects is constructed by a workforce of about 20,000 within two months in the spectacular exhibition halls designed by Herzog & de Meuron. The number of visitors from the Far East – predominantly Hong Kong and China – is also remarkable and has been continuously increasing for several years. The organiser also counted many visitors from this region of the world at the previous Baselworld 2013 trade fair. Watch and jewellery brands have become important trendsetters in the lifestyle sector during the past ten years. Fashion designers, designers and marketing experts from various sectors increasingly get their inspiration from this worldwide unique event in Basle.

with Contemporary Art into the Future The Swiss tradition company, Koller Auctions, is continuously expanding its offer. A new focus is on PostWar & Contemporary. When Pierre Koller opened a gallery for horse engravings in Zurich more than 50 years ago, he did not know that he was also laying the foundation stone for the largest Swiss auction house. He did not actually become an auctioneer until two years later when a client offered him a clock collection worth 100 000 Swiss Francs and he did not have the money to buy the collection. The solution was to auction off the about 1000 lots. This resulted in the first auction in the Zurich Congress House in 1960. The family-owned company, which is today managed in the second generation by the oldest of his three sons, has meanwhile also become one of the worldwide top ten auction houses for works of art. A main feature of the auction house is the broad offer range of more than 20 special fields with their own expert team. Each field is represented by its own catalogue. The auctions take place in Zurich and Geneva. Koller is represented worldwide by its own representative offices. Winning bids of several million Swiss Francs are nothing unusual. Since 2013, Koller has concentrated more strongly on auctions for PostWar & Contemporary. The segment is offered in June and December in the auctions for modern art. Contemporary graphics is also represented with its own catalogue. The latest specialisation in American Pop Art realised the first worldwide top prices in December 2013. The next auction for contemporary art will take place at Koller on 28 June 2014. The auction events will also include a prior viewing

Zum Auktionator wurde er nämlich erst zwei Jahre später, als ihm ein Kunde eine Uhrensammlung im Wert von 100 000 Franken anbot und das Geld zum Ankauf nicht reichte. Die Lösung lag darin, die rund 1000 Lose in einer Auktion zu versteigern. So kam es 1960 zur ersten Auktion im Kongresshaus Zürich. Mittlerweile hat sich das Familienunternehmen, das in zweiter Generation vom ältesten seiner drei Söhne geleitet wird, auch international in die Reihe der zehn bedeutendsten Adressen für Kunstauktionen eingereiht. Charakteristisch ist die breite Angebotspalette von über 20 Spezialkapiteln mit eigenen Expertenteams. Jedes Gebiet ist dabei mit einem eigenen Katalog vertreten. Die Auktionen finden in Zürich und Genf statt. Mit Repräsentanzen ist Koller rund um den Globus vertreten. Zuschläge von mehreren Millionen Schweizer Franken sind an der Tagesordnung. Seit 2013 konzentriert sich Koller noch stärker auf Auktionen für den Bereich PostWar & Contemporary. Das Segment wird jeweils im Juni und Dezember innerhalb der Auktionen für moderne Kunst angeboten. Auch zeitgenössische Graphik ist mit einem eigenen Katalog vertreten. Die jüngste Spezialisierung auf amerikanische Popart hat im Dezember 2013 erste internationale Spitzenpreise eingebracht. Die nächste Auktion für zeitgenössische Kunst findet bei Koller am 28. Решено было продать около 1000 лотов с аукциона. Так в 1960 году возник первый аукцион в доме конгресса в Цюрихе. Между тем семейное предприятие, которым руководит представитель второго поколения – старший из трех сыновей, было включено в десятку самых крупных международных адресов, где проводятся аукционы произведений искусств. Особого внимания заслуживает широкий ассортимент услуг по двадцати специальным разделам с собственными экспертными командами. Каждая сфера представлена в отдельном каталоге. Аукционы проходят в Цюрихе и Женеве. Представительства Koller размещены по всему миру. Ожидаются торги на несколько миллионов швейцарских франков. С 2013 года Koller все больше обращает внимание на аукционы произведений искусств послевоенного периода и современности. Так в июне и декабре в рамках аукционов будет представлено современное искусство. Современная графика оформлена в отдельный каталог. Der freischaffende Künstler Max E. Seiz ergründet den Menschen und seine elementaren Emotionen – in seinen Werken werden Freude, Liebe oder Schmerz zu Farbe und Form. Seinem unerschöpflichen Schaffen entspringen Unmengen an Skizzen, Pastellen und bildhauerischen Werken aus Stein und Metall. Im Mittelpunkt seines Interesses steht der Mensch als sinnendes und sinnliches, aber immer erdhaftes Wesen. Die Kunst des deutschen Malers und Bildhauers wurde in zahlreichen nationalen und internationalen Ausstellungen gezeigt. Hoch über Schwäbisch Gmünd liegt, in die Felsen der Landschaft eingehauen, eine über 100 Jahre alte Jugendstilvilla, der Wohnsitz von Max Eugen Seiz (Foto Seite 83). Mehr als ein halbes Jahrhundert ist der gelernte Stahlgraveur mittlerweile künstlerisch tätig – seine Ungeduld, Neugierde und Schaffenskraft sind aber ungebrochen. Mit feinem Gespür und hoher Sensibilität nimmt er in der Zurückgezogenheit des Ortes äussere Eindrücke auf, verarbeitet sie in Zeichnungen und Aquarellen oder fixiert sie in Form von Skizzen, um sie bald darauf mit seinen Händen ins Dreidimensionale zu übersetzen. In seinen Werken erkennt man sein stetes Festhalten an der menschlichen, insbesondere weiblichen Figur, ohne sich dabei von physikalischen Gesetzmässigkeiten abhängig zu machen. Seine Skulpturen, für die Max Seiz vorallem bekannt und gefragt ist, zeigen von Liebe zur Schönheit, zu ornamentalen und kraftvollen Formen mit plastischer Vitalität. An der mit besonderen Qualitätsansprüchen realisierten technischen Ausführung erkennt man viel Liebe zum Detail und grosses handwerkliches Geschick. Die Freiheit in seinem Schaffen ist für den ungestümen Schwaben die oberste Maxime – in einer eigenen Stilform hat er sich ganz einer hoffnungsvollen Seite des Daseins zugewandt. Zitiert man Thomas Köllhofer, Kurator der Kunsthalle in Mannheim, so ist für Max Seiz der Mensch immer auf der Suche nach dem persönlichen Glück und dem vitalen Erleben des Augenblicks. Seine Figuren und Werke berichten dementsprechend fast ausschliesslich von einem harmonischen Zustand. Sie erzählen von Familie und Zusammenhalt, vermitteln Ruhe und Gelassenheit, verkörpern Geborgenheit und Geschlossenheit – und spiegeln somit auch das Leben des Künstlers selbst. Max Seiz wird im Oktober 2014 87 Jahre alt und ist seit über 60 Jahren freischaffender Künstler. Seine Werke, die von zahlreichen Museen und Kunstsammlern angekauft werden, präsentiert er auf internationalen Ausstellungen und wichtigen Kunstmessen weltweit.

Max Eugen Seiz lives in an Art Nouveau mansion (see picture on page 83) that is more than 100 years old and carved into the solid rocks of the landscape high above Schwäbisch Gmünd. The learned steel engraver has now worked in art for more than half a century - his impatience, curiosity and creative energy however are intact. With a fine intuition and a high level of sensitivity, he takes external impressions in the privacy of the location, works on them in drawings and water colours or fixes them in the form of sketches, to translate them into three dimensions with his hands soon after. In his works you can recognise the consistent adherence to the human, and particularly female figure without making himself dependent on physical regularities. His sculptures, for which Max Seiz is well known and sought after above all, show a love of beauty, ornamental and powerful forms with sculptural vitality. You can see a great deal of attention to detail and great craftsmanlike skill in the technical design realised with particular quality standards. Freedom in his work is the highest maxim for the impetuous Swabian - in his own style, he has completely devoted himself to a hopeful side of existence. To quote Thomas Köllhofer, curator of the art gallery in Mannheim, for Max Seiz, people are always looking for personal happiness and the vital experience of the moment. His sculptures and works accordingly almost exclusively report a harmonious state. They tell of family and togetherness, convey calm and serenity, embody comfort and closeness - and therefore reflect the life of the artist himself. Max Seiz will celebrate his 87th birthday in October 2014 and has been a freelance artist for more than 60 years. He shows his works of art, which are purchased by numerous museums and art collectors, at international exhibitions and important art fairs around the world.

Mit ihrem feinen Gespür für Trends, ihrem treffsicheren Stil und ihrem Auge fürs Detail bringen sie jedes Jahr aufs Neue formschöne und puristisch-leichte Designstücke aufs Möbelparkett. Worauf können wir uns 2014 also freuen? Soviel ist sicher: Es wird harmonisch, es wird gemütlich, es wird individuell. Ecken und Kanten werden abgerundet, hochwertige und natürliche Materialien dominieren das Bild, Wohlfühl-Möbel verdrängen unterkühltes Design, kontrastierende Einzelstücke bekommen Raum. Es wird gemixt und kombiniert, Stühle aller Stilrichtungen dürfen um den Tisch stehen. Wohnen bewegt sich zunehmend ausserhalb des 08/15-Bereichs und spiegelt gleichzeitig das Bedürfnis nach einem offenen Wohnstil als auch die Sehnsucht nach Geborgenheit wider. Die italienischen Hersteller setzen dieses Jahr auf dunkles Mobiliar aus exquisiten Materialien. Dezentes Grau ist das neue Weiss. Elegante schwarze und erdfarbene Töne werden begleitet von wenigen Farben, wie Rosa oder Pink in verschiedenen Nuancen. Gelb darf ebenfalls kombiniert werden, und insbesondere mit Blau werden spannende Farbakzente gesetzt. Ledermöbel sind und bleiben ein Klassiker. Allerdings sieht man die schwarze Ledercouch modernisiert und neu interpretiert. Ein Retro-Trend ist auch bei den Italienern zu erkennen. Die neue Sofa-Kollektion „Larsen“ des Möbelherstellers Verzelloni etwa ist eine Reminiszenz an die Sixties. Bei den Tischen und Wohnaccessoires dominieren Designstücke aus Marmor, Buntmetall und farbigem Glas. Ein ebenso erkennbarer Trend ist die Reduzierung auf einige wenige Möbelstücke und das Ausbrechen aus der klassischen Raumverteilung. We love them – their pasta, their fashion, their furniture! The Italians might not spearhead economic recovery but they are the masters of design. With their fine feel for trends, their spot-on style and their eye for detail, they put new aesthetically pleasing, puristically simple pieces of designer furniture on the market every year. The Salone Internazionale del Mobile exhibition in the style metropolis of Milan is deemed to be the most important trade fair of the industry. The latest trends in the furniture sector will again be shown there this spring. An absolute must for design hunters and furniture enthusiasts.

What can we look forward to in 2014? One thing is certain: It will be harmonious, cosy, and individual. Corners and edges are made round, high-quality and natural materials dominate the picture, comfortable furniture replaces crisp design, and contrasting single pieces are given space. The trend is mixing and combining; chairs of all styles may stand around the table. Furniture increasingly moves away from bog standard design and simultaneously reflects the desire for an

The Italians are setting trends open-plan home style and the longing for snugness. The trend favoured by Italian manufacturers this year is dark furniture made of exquisite materials. Unobtrusive grey is the new white colour. Elegant black and earth colour shades are accompanied by few colours like rose or pink in different nuances. Yellow may also be combined and especially blue is used for exciting colour accents. Leather upholstery remains a classic. However, the black leather

sofa looks modernised and reinterpreted. A retro trend can also be seen in the Italian market. The new ‘Larsen’ sofa collection of the Verzelloni furniture manufacturer is reminiscent of the 1960’s. Designer pieces made of marble, non-ferrous metal and coloured glass dominate in the table and home accessories segments. The reduction to just a few pieces of furniture and a shift away from traditional room layout are further noticeable trends. Modular

components for wall and floor that can be combined, just like a well-matched clothing collection, allow harmonious and individual room concepts. Wallpaper is also very much in vogue again and predominantly feature themes of flora and fauna. Wall&Decò, for example, exhibits very imaginative collections. In summary, one thing can be clearly seen from the Italian manufacturers: It’s all about distinction gain through top-quality design and workmanship.

Kurz vor Jahresende öffneten sich die Türen des neuen Geschäfts im Redbox-Haus an der Seestrasse. Auf zwei Stockwerken und einer Fläche von etwa 1 000 Quadratmetern fügt sich edles Design harmonisch in die lichtdurchfluteten Räumlichkeiten. Schon am Eingang erreicht das herzliche Lächeln von Ivano Colombo, gebürtiger Tessiner und Namensgeber der Einrichtungsfamilie, den Besucher. Ein Blick auf die ansprechende Ladengestaltung, und man erkennt die Handschrift der zwei weiteren Mitbegründer, Peter Kern und Karin Bollinger – die schweizerdeutsch spricht, aber bei der Sortimentsauswahl stilsicher italienisch denkt. Der Weg durch die Wohnlandschaften führt vorbei an Ausstattungshighlights von Flexform, B&B Italia, Meridiani, Zanotta, Poliform, Baxter, Gervasoni und weitere Marken. Die Gegensätze scheinen sich hier magisch anzuziehen. Glattes Leder schmeichelt sich an flauschiges Fell, weicher Samt trifft auf kalten Marmor. Messingfarbene Leuchten spiegeln sich an der weissen Wand. Bequem und unbeschwert fühlen sich die Objekte an, erinnern an italienische Leichtigkeit. Wie der Einrichtungsprozess bei einem Kunden die nötige Zeit in Anspruch nimmt, so bietet auch hier noch das ein oder andere Regal Platz für ein zusätzliches Accessoire. Ein nächster Spaziergang durch die Designwelt bei Colombo la famiglia ist schon geplant – und auch ein dolce far niente auf einem der Möbelstücke.

Italian-Style Family Growth «Colombo la famiglia», one of the top names in terms of design and furniture in Zurich, presents itself with another spacious showroom in Zollikon. The doors of the new store in the Redbox House at Seestrasse opened shortly before the end of the year. Noble design fits harmoniously into the light-flooded rooms on a floor space of about 1,000 square metres spread over two storeys. The visitor is already welcome at the entrance by the warm smile of Ivano Colombo, Ticino-born and eponym for the furniture family. A glance at the attractive store design and one immediately recognises that it bears the hallmarks of the other two co-founders, Peter Kern and Karin Bollinger, who speaks Swiss German but has a strong sense of Italian style when it comes to product selection. The path through the home design showroom takes you past furnishing highlights by Flexform, B&B Italia, Meridiani, Zanotta, Poliform, Baxter, Gervasoni and many more. Contrasts seem to magically attract each other. Smooth leather snuggles up to fluffy fur, soft silk meets cold marble. Brass-coloured lights are reflected on the white wall. The items feel comfortable and casual and remind of Italian ease. Besides the furniture offer, there are also shelves with accessories to give the customer inspiration for the long home furnishing process. The next walk through the World of Design at Colombo la famiglia is already scheduled - and so is a dolce far niente on one of the pieces of furniture.

Trotz seiner überschaubaren Grösse ist Madeira reich an majestätischen Szenarien. Von der Hauptstadt Funchal aus lässt sich die Insel wunderbar erkunden. Richtung Westen führen schmale Strassen vorbei an Bananenplantagen und Zuckerrohrfeldern an die beeindruckenden Steilklippen im Süden Madeiras. Am Aussichtspunkt Cabo Girão bietet sich ein schwindelerregender Blick in eine über fünfhundert Meter tiefe Schlucht, an deren Ende sich ein kleines, aus Lavagestein erodiertes Stück Land präsentiert. Fast unwirklich erscheinen die Weinreben auf diesem fruchtbaren Fleckchen zwischen Felswand und Meer. Weiter Richtung Norden führt der Weg über ein weites Hochplateau. Die endlos scheinenden gelben Stechginster-Felder weichen schliesslich dem mystischen Grün der Wälder des Fanal-Gebiets. Moosbewachsene, mit Flechten behangene Bäume vermitteln das Bild eines Zauberwaldes. Schmale Wege entlang offen liegender Bewässerungskanäle laden zu

wunderschönen Wanderungen ein. Diese sogenannten «Levadas» wurden einst in mühsamer Arbeit angelegt, um das Wasser aus regenreichen Gebieten in die besiedelten Teile der Insel zu leiten. Das Wasser in den kleinen Rinnen fliesst ruhig, fast unmerklich und lässt auch die eigenen Gedanken Schritt für Schritt zur Ruhe kommen. In Porto Moniz an der raueren Nordküste angelangt, zieren Lavaformationen die Bucht, die das Meerwasser in Form von natürlichen Schwimmbecken in sich sammeln. Hier ist die Kraft des Atlantiks besonders intensiv zu spüren und der freie Blick auf den weiten Ozean erfüllt mit Demut. Entlang der Nordküste Richtung Osten führt der Weg vorbei an wildromantischen Felsküsten mit zahlreichen Wasserfällen. Majestätische Grüntöne kontrastieren mit dem kristallklaren Blau des Wassers. Von São Vicente oder dem weiter östlich gelegenen Santana aus lässt sich Richtung Süden die atemberaubende Gebirgslandschaft im inne-

ren Madeiras erschliessen oder nochmals in die dichte Vegetation des Laurissilva-Waldes eintauchen, der sich mit seinen alten Lorbeerbäumen und seiner Vielfalt an Farnen, Flechten und Moosen vorallem im nördlichen Teil der Insel erstreckt. Diesem Urwald verdankt Madeira auch seinen Namen, der übersetzt soviel wie Holz bedeutet. Der Südosten der Insel zeigt sich nochmals von einer ganz anderen Seite. Ein wunderschöner Panoramaweg auf die Halbinsel Ponta de São Lourenço führt durch ungewohnt trockene Landschaft. Das Meer umspült hier sanft den östlichsten Punkt der Insel, und das weiche Licht der Nachmittagssonne bringt die Farben des Lavagesteins zum Leuchten. Im Süden laden schliesslich wunderschöne Gärten in und um Funchal ein, die florale Farbenpracht der Blumeninsel zu bestaunen. Endemische Pflanzen wie der «Stolz Madeiras» mischen sich mit exotischen Pflanzen wie Strelitzien und Callas. Wer angesichts soviel natürlicher Schönheit nicht zur Ruhe kommt, der kommt es wahrscheinlich nirgendwo.

Everything flows Ocean all around, water in streams and water falls - the source of all life flows secretively through green wood. Blue and green tones give the landscape its unique character. An abundant flora and mild climate make the volcanic island in the Atlantic a paradise for nature lovers, hikers and those trying to find themselves. In spite of its manageable size, Madeira is rich in majestic scenarios. The capital city of Funchal is a wonderful starting point to explore the island. To the West, narrow streets lead past banana plantations and sugar cane fields to the impressive steep cliffs in the South of Madeira. From the lookout point of Cabo Girão, there is a dizzying view into a gorge over five hundred metres deep, at the end of which an eroded piece of land made of lava stone is presented. The vines on this fruitful spot between the rock face and the sea seem almost unreal. Further North, the path leads over a wide, high plateau. The endlessseeming yellow gorse fields finally give way to the mystical green of the forests of the Fanal region. Moss-covered trees draped with lichens give the image of a magical forest. Narrow paths along the open irrigation channels invite you to take wonderful walks. These so-called "Levadas" were once established with laborious work in order to guide the water from the rain-rich areas into the populated parts of the island. The water in the small gutters flows quietly, almost imperceptibly and lets even your own thoughts come to rest, step by step.

Arriving in Porto Moniz on the rougher North coast, lava formations decorate the bay, which collect sea water in them in the form of natural swimming pools. Here, you can feel the force of the Atlantic particularly intensively, and the unimpeded view of the wide ocean fills you with humility. Along the North coast to the East, the path leads past the wildly romantic rock coasts with numerous waterfalls. Majestic green tones contrast with the crystal clear blue of the water. From São Vicente or Santana further to the East, you can discover the breathtaking mountain landscape of inner Madeira to the South, or immerse yourself in the dense vegetation of the Laurissilva forest once again, which primarily stretches across the northern part of the island with its old laurel trees and its multitude of ferns, lichens and mosses. Madeira also gets its name from this primeval forest, which when translated means wood. The South East of the island shows itself from a completely different side. A beautiful panoramic path on the Ponta de São Lourenço peninsula leads through unusually dry landscape. The sea gently washes round the eastern point of the island here, and the soft light of the afternoon sun makes the colours of the lava stone light up. Finally, in the South, beautiful gardens in and around Funchal invite you to be amazed at the floral blaze of colour of the flower island. Endemic plants such as the "proud Madeira" mix with exotic plants such as strelitiza and callas. If you can't find peace surrounded by so much natural beauty, you probably won't find it anywhere.

Das neogotische Grandhotel Dem neogotischen Grandhotel Villa Feltrinelli wurde während der Wintermonate ein neuer Glanz verpasst, damit es bei der Eröffnung am 25. April wieder in neuem Licht erstrahlt. Die traumhafte Villa liegt im alten Fischerdorf Gargnano am Westufer des Gardasees, unweit der Städte Verona, Bergamo und Mantua. 1892 als Sommerresidenz der bekannten italienischen Verlegerfamilie Feltrinelli errichtet, diente das heute denkmalgeschützte Gebäude während des Zweiten Weltkrieges als Wohnsitz von Benito Mussolini. Nachdem es einige Jahre leer stand, flossen 1997 mehr als 30 Millionen Euro in die originalgetreue Renovierung des Hauses. Heute beherbergen die 20 Suiten der Villa sowie zwei separate Cottages maximal 40 Gäste. Jede Unterkunft ist einzigartig und mit edlen Antiquitäten eingerichtet, darunter auch Originalstücke der Feltrinelli-Familie. Hinzu kamen über 1 000 weitere antike oder massgefertigte Unikate. Fresken, Holzschnitzereien, Intarsien und weitere kunstvolle Werke schmücken die öffentlichen Bereiche.

Alle Unterkünfte sind individuell ausgestattet und bieten entweder einen Blick auf den See oder den Park. Jedes Zimmer zieren liebevolle Details, wie silbern gerahmte Schwarz-Weiss-Fotos, handgemachte venezianische Nachttischlampen aus Glas oder Original-Kunstwerke wie Ölporträts und historische Drucke. Sieben Gästeräume in der Hauptvilla sind geschmückt mit handgemalten Freskendecken der Lieti-Brüder. Die luxuriösen Bäder, mit einer Grösse von bis zu 46 Quadratmetern, verfügen über beheizbare Marmorfussböden, tellergrosse Duschköpfe und eine separate JacobDelafon-Badewanne aus französischem Porzellan. Zur Verfügung stehen Pflegeartikel von Aqua di Parma. Daneben werden die Gäste von der ausgezeichneten Küche verwöhnt, die vor Kurzem den zweiten Michelin-Stern erhalten hat. Im Dining Room werden täglich Frühstück, Mittag- sowie Abendessen mit Aussicht auf den See serviert, während im Kamin ein loderndes Feuer für behagliches Ambiente sorgt. Die Wünsche der Gäste haben oberste Priorität – die unvergleichlichen Gerichte werden jederzeit und überall serviert, wie etwa am Seeufer, am Pool, im Garten oder auch im Weinkeller. Der Küchenchef Stefano Baiocco bietet lokal inspirierte Speisen, unter anderem hausgemachte Pasta, frische Fischgerichte vom Gardasee und regionale italienische Spezialitäten. Die Villa und ihre drei Nebengebäude sind von einem 3,2 Hektar grossen Park umgeben. The listed building dating from 1892 was originally constructed as a summer residence for the famous Feltrinelli publishing dynasty, serving as a domicile for Benito Mussolini during the Second World War. After standing desolate for a number of years, more than 30 million euros were pumped into refurbishing the villa in 1997 to return it to its original state. Today, there are 20 suites in the villa as well as two separate cottages, which in total house a maximum of 40 guests. Each accommodation is unique and filled with fine antiques, including a number of original pieces from the Feltrinelli family themselves. These have been further augmented by 1 000 other antique or bespoke originals. Frescoes, wood carvings, inlays and other elaborate pieces of craftsmanship grace the public areas. All accommodation has been designed individually and either afford views of the lake or into the parkland. Great attention to detail has been paid in every room, such as the silver-framed black and white photos, handcrafted bedside lamps made of Venetian glass or original artwork such as the

oil portraits and historical prints. Seven of the guest rooms in the main villa feature ceiling frescoes hand painted by the Lieti Brothers. The luxurious bathrooms are generously sized, ranging up to 46 square metres and feature underfloor heating for the marble floors, deluge shower heads and a separate Jacob Delafon bathtub made of French porcelain. Toiletries available are from the Aqua di Parma range. Guests will be delighted by the excellent cuisine on offer, which has just recently been awarded its second Michelin star. Breakfast, lunch and evening meals are served in the dining room which has an excellent view of the lake and also creates a warm and homely atmosphere with its crackling log fire. Top priority is given to the wishes of the guests – superlative dishes are served at anytime and anywhere, whether this be by the lake, the pool, in the gardens or even in the wine cellar. Stefano Baiocco, the kitchen chef, offers locally inspired dishes which also include handmade pasta, fresh fish dishes from Lake Garda and regional Italian specialities. The villa and its three annexes are surrounded by 3.2 hectares of parkland. Olive and orange trees, magnolias, ancient oaks and cypresses as well as the house’s own lemon trees grow here and which are also used in the hotel kitchen. A typical characteristic of the multiaward-winning Grand Hotel is the high degree of peace and privacy to be found, coupled with a service concept that is beyond compare.

A Taste of the Maldives

Lake Weissensee in Carinthia is the highest bathing lake in Europe and since it is a real insider’s tip is certainly never crowded. A place of natural beauty boasting more than 300 sunny days a year, it provides an experience hard to find anywhere else nowadays. The Weissenseerhof is the first building you encounter on the lake and represents a holistic philosophy. In addition to rooms protected from electrosmog, the four-star superior resort also uses Grander water throughout the entire house. With its use of natural materials, the double rooms are stylishly modern and the Weissenseerhof also offers additional guest suites which have access to their own garden as well as biovital rooftop suites. The hotel has its own restaurant, the Liebstöckel, awarded two Gault Millau toques and its chef, Florian Klinger, conjures up elaborately created dishes, which exclusively use organic ingredients from the region. All herbs and vegetables are grown in the hotel’s own gardens and in the nurseries affiliated with the house. Fish from Lake Weissensee are freshly caught every day by long-established fishermen and all the fine oils used in the kitchen and spa have come from the hotel’s own pressing and are 100 per cent natural.

A Sign of the Elements – the Lake Spa Two thirds of the lake spa float above the water and provide relaxation lovers with a truly special place in which to retreat. All massages, authentic rituals and signature treatments have been specially developed and indicate ways in which the elements of nature can be unified. Each of the spa’s saunas affords spectacular views across the lake and guests are provided the perfect opportunity in which to relax with a number of lavishly designed treatment rooms plus a steam room where experienced masseurs and beauticians await to pamper their guests.

Im hoteleigenen, von GaultMillau mit zwei Hauben ausgezeichneten Restaurant Liebstöckel zaubert Küchenchef Florian Klinger seine aufwändig angerichteten Kreationen ausschliesslich mit biologischen Zutaten aus der Region. So stammen Kräuter und Gemüse allesamt aus dem eigenen Hotelgarten und der zum Haus gehörenden Gärtnerei. Die Fische werden von einem alteingesessenen Fischer jeden Tag frisch aus dem Weissensee gefangen, und auch die in Küche und Spa verwendeten feinen Öle kommen aus eigener Pressung und sind zu 100 Prozent naturbelassen.

Das zu zwei Dritteln über dem Wasser schwebende See-Spa bietet Erholungssuchenden einen ganz besonderen Ort des Rückzugs. Alle Massagen sowie authentischen Rituale und Signature-Treatments wurden speziell entwickelt, um Wege zur Einheit mit den Elementen der Natur aufzuzeigen.
