AS THE SPIRIT MOVES ME….. I‘m going to vent a little of my frustration, today; and, hopefully, by the end the Spirit will lead me to something positive. God will lead us to a spiritual truth in every situation, if we seek it. I always heard it from my father, this way: “Liars figure and figures lie.” Others have attributed a different saying to Mark Twain or Charles H. Grosvenor: “Figures won’t lie, but liars will figure.” No one knows the actual origin of either, but I believe we have experienced the truth of both. Right? The Wisdom Literature of the Bible says, “A faithful witness does not lie, but a false witness breathes out lies” (Proverbs 14:5) and “They utter lies to each other; with flattering lips and a double heart they speak” (Psalm 12:2) Twenty-two years ago (1989), there was a Hollywood movie titled, “Sex, Lies and Videotape.” Well, to paraphrase that movie, I believe we can give a title to the recent conversations in Washington, D. C. in regards to raising the debt ceiling, raising/ not raising taxes, spending cuts, and balanced budget amendments, etc. I would call it: “Flattering lips, Double Hearts and Lies.” Right now, I am incredibly frustrated with the unwillingness of some members of both political parties to publicly show any willingness for compromise. (I assume there‘s stuff going on ―behind the scenes.‖) This nation, most of our marriages (at least, the healthy ones), and all good leadership are founded on the importance of compromise, give-and-take, deferring to the wisdom/interest/needs of the other on occasion, and finding the wisdom and truth in the other‘s values and perspectives. There are economists who say we cannot raise taxes (even close some loopholes) at this time, and economists who say we have to do both. Some people present graphs that show more economic growth when the highest tax rates are above 75%; others present 3
graphs that show the opposite. What is the truth? ..Is it more that “Liars figure and figures lie,” or that “Figures won’t lie, but liars will figure,” or somewhere in between? Probably the latter. Jesus said, “Render to Caesar that which is Caesar’s,” which, in part, meant that if you‘re going to participate in a relationship with the Roman Empire, then you have to give Caesar that which he demands and is due him. Yet, there are corporations and people, wealthy and poor, who want to participate in the benefits, freedom and security of this nation and still pay nothing in income taxes. They say they pay plenty of other taxes. Well, so do you and I! The Democrats say we can‘t raise the burden on the elderly, the poor and other marginal people by cutting spending and programming which is vital to their well-being. The Republicans say we can‘t raise any taxes on anyone, including closing the loopholes that allow some wealthy people and corporations to pay nothing in taxes on their profits. ... Are these positions truth or just more “Flattering lips, Double Hearts and Lies.” The challenge we face is between truth and loyalty, as Rushworth Kidder, an ethicist, presents it: “Compelled to choose between truth and loyalty, I would (all things being equal) come down on the side of truth. One reason: This history of this (last) century suggests that those who put loyalty above truth (loyalty to Hitler, Mao, Stalin, Saddam Hussein, and even Richard Nixon) are capable to doing terrible damage to the world. It’s hard to imagine that kind of damage arising when truth is put above loyalty. Having to choose, I feel safer and more comfortable honoring what is true than following human allegiances.” I think one of my other memories from my father is helpful for me, here, as well. He would challenge my siblings and I to stop ―shading the truth,‖ when we were speaking in nuances and not the fullness of truth. He knew we were playing word games with him so we could, hopefully, avoid having to be accountable for our actions or the stories we were telling him. It never worked with him! 4
There‘s a lot of ―shading the truth‖ going on in the political PAC, lobbyist, political commentary and political posturing. To me, it‘s just so much “Flattering lips, Double Hearts and Lies.” Jesus says, “Let your word be "Yes, Yes' or "No, No'; anything more than this comes from the evil one.” (Matthew 5); in other words, no ―shading the truth‖ or ―flattering lips, double hearts and lies‖ if we want to live His truth.
SHARE YOUR STORY, PLEASE! You are a person of faith in God, be your faith the size of a mustard seed or the faith that is able to move mountains, as Jesus tells us. But you have a measure of faith. You believe in God, with greater or lesser confidence. You have experienced God, in your own way. It was a moment or experience that moved you to be very mindful of God. You felt God‘s presence or a moment of profound wonder, grace or awe. Maybe it was a something you saw, felt or heard. Maybe something happened that, at first, seemed to be just a wonderful coincidence; but, as you thought about it, you knew God had worked in that moment. Maybe it was something else - a moment of forgiveness, reconciliation, connection, service or humility. These or other moments in your life caused you to have or confirm your faith in God or believe a little bit more. It may be a short story, or it could be quite involved. Either way, it is a story that can and will enrich all of us in our faith. Share your story, please! I want to gather these stories and create our own devotional from your stories. We‘ve only received a handful, but we do have some. Please add yours. You may sign your name, just your initials, or anonymously. 5
Kevin’s Korner… Several of you have expressed your support of my health and fitness efforts and have given that push I needed to stay on track. Thank you so much for your sharing this with me, it truly helped me regain my focus. Over the last month I‘ve continued on my weight loss journey with great success. I‘ve kept Christ at the center of my efforts and He has given me the strength to resist all those food temptations that present themselves on a daily basis. It‘s not easy by any means but with Christ all things are possible. At one point in my life I thought God just wanted me to be fat. I gave up and lost all hope. Perhaps you have given up all hope for a new healthier tomorrow. Let me tell you, no matter what your situation, God can and will work in you. Embrace His guidance and you will be amazed at the blessings He rains down on you. God brought me to Freeport at a dark time in my life (emotionally). All of you along with my Prince of Peace friends have changed me forever. I‘m a new creation in Christ, free to live for Him. My ministries here at St. John bring me much joy. More than I can express in words. I‘m glad my stories and experiences can help others along life's crazy journey. I suppose I just want to say thank you for being such a loving and supportive congregation. Our St. John UCC family has always been there for us and my family appreciates it. I look forward to many more years at St. John UCC. I can‘t wait to see what the Lord has planned for us next.
Helix Update: We have had the highest Summer attendance I‘ve had since joining this congregations youth ministry efforts. The past few Sundays we have had 20 students and most of them are walking over a mile to get to the church for our programming. That's really cool in my book. I‘m in need of at least two volunteer helpers each Sunday. Donnley mentioned that he felt more people would volunteer if they knew what I need them to do. So in my continuing effort to get servant volunteers I‘ll tell you want I‘m looking for. Our ministry staff needs to be well 6
balanced. These are some of the characteristics of a volunteer that would make our ministry better.
Volunteers must be: Big on Sympathy - This trait is associated with people who ―care for those weaker than they are‖ and value cooperation over competition. Agreeable - The ability to put people at ease and accept them as they are. Low on Anger - Teens are annoying by nature so we need volunteers who don‘t get easily annoyed, people who don‘t lose there cool and don‘t complain. A volunteer who is slow to anger and agreeable will be a patient volunteer.
So you fit these basic volunteer traits somewhat, now what can you do to help: In a nut shell, Be present and available to the needs of the leaders and students. This would include playing games, serving snacks, cleaning up, watching students, goofing around with students, helping to round everyone up and keeping everyone safe. Your in? Great! Please sign up on the bulletin board in the narthex or call the church office to get signed-up. 815-235-2824 Consumed by the Call, Kevin Eckert Director of Children & Youth Ministries, Director of Technology
WELCOME, ANGELA NEWKIRK In April, Angela Newkirk began with us as a ―temp‖ employee through Hughes Resources. Our contract with Hughes required a 90-day minimum before we could hire her as our employee. Angela‘s 90 days have been completed and we have hired her as our parttime custodian. Please officially welcome her as a member of our St. John staff! We do! 7
L AYC ARE M INISTRY I come to the garden alone, while the dew is still on the roses -I‘m so glad that C. Austin Miles composed that hymn. ―In The Garden‖ was my mom‘s favorite hymn. She was also a gardener. There are many types of gardening. As I spend time out there in the garden, I find myself all involved in meditation and prayer. I find so many reasons to thank God for His creations. One day, while I was watering, a little robin flew in, sat on the fence and flapped her wings while the fresh, cool water sprinkled her over-heated body. That, to me, was a God Wink! Another one of God‘s beautiful creations. Gardening is a wonder, isn‘t it? That tiny, little seed buried under the earth that develops into a huge, green plant and produces wonderful, healthy veggies always amazes me. As Deb Scott and I worked together, talking about our families and our lives and trying to figure out a way to keep the rabbits out of the garden, I realized I was also ‘gardening a friendship‘ with her. We talked about feeling close to God while we are working in the garden or mowing the lawn - and what a great time that is for prayer and meditation. It‘s a peaceful time, a time without interruption and a perfect time for prayer. I‘m thankful that God puts people like Deb into my life who refresh me and make me glad. As the morning continued and we talked, I learned little things about her children and her siblings. I shared stories with her about my family. Our friendship grew as we talked. We left the garden that morning, arms around each other saying ―Well done, oh faithful servants, well done.‖ That garden is a project with God! “And he walks with me and He talks with me, and He tells me I am his own, And the joy we share as we tarry there, none other has ever known” Peace and Love, - Marilyn Ruthe, Coordinator, Laycare Ministry 8
S TEWARDSHIP M INISTRY - Applying Bible Principles General Norman Schwarzkopf once recalled when he was the Assistant Commander for Personnel at the Pentagon. He had been in this assignment for two weeks when his superior left for an eight-week trip to the Orient. General Schwarzkopf expressed concern about his ability, even as a major general, to handle this new responsibility. His superior told him to follow ―Rule 13.‖ When Schwarzkopf asked what ―Rule 13‖ was, his superior told him, ―When given command, take charge.‖ ―But what if I don‘t know what to do?‖ asked Schwarzkopf. The reply was that he should follow ―Rule 14 - Do what is right.‖ Sometimes Christians are in a similar predicament, especially concerning actions based on feelings. We do many things in the Christian life because they are ―right,‖ not because we necessarily want to do them or feel like doing them. Nowhere is this more true than concerning our giving. Even when perhaps we do not feel like giving, mature Christians give because doing so is ―right‖ and because God has motivated our hearts to give. Unfortunately, some people follow the life principle of giving only when they feel like it. The problem is that they seldom feel like it. Oh, they might give to a special project now and then or respond to a special need that appeals to them. Otherwise, though, they usually fail to give unless they happen to feel like it. In some ways, such individuals who give only when they feel like it fit Abraham Lincoln‘s description of those who achieve financial success but little else in life. ―Financial success,‖ he once said, ―is purely metallic. The person who gains it has four metallic attributes: gold in his palm, silver on his tongue, brass in his face, and iron in his heart.‖ ―In contrast,‖ writes Randy Alcorn, ―the Macedonian believers begged ‗us earnestly for the privilege of sharing in this ministry [giving] to the saints‘ (2 Cor. 8:4). When we catch a vision of God‘s grace, we will give according to our duty, yes, but far more, we will give beyond our duty, voluntarily captivated by the grace of our ever-giving Lord.‖ 9
DREAMING-BRAINSTORMING SESSION REPORT On Sunday, June 26th, following worship, a group of about 20 persons spent over an hour listening to the Spirit and sharing their ideas and dreams for St. John UCC. All ideas were received without comment, so as to not stifle creative thinking. A long list of ideas and dreams was generated, which will be passed on to the appropriate ministry. We‘re hoping and expecting some of them to inspire the passion and energy of others, so that we experience the power, blessing and inspiration of the Spirit of God alive, even more, in our midst. Do you have a dream or an idea for something St. John UCC needs or needs to do for others? ... There‘s a dry-erase board in the narthex for you to brainstorm with us. Our suggestion board, so to speak. Please add your ideas and dreams!

GUM UNDER THE PEWS! One of Angela‘s first tasks, at her initiative, was to go under all the church pews, in the choir section and the main floor, to remove all the gum that had been stuck under the pews. Every piece of gum was removed under every pew. She has recently found 7 new pieces of gum stuck under the pews - in areas where children usually are not seated. Adults are doing this. Please stop. 17

Members present: President Perry Cowan, Mary Arnold, Bill Condie, Lisa Ebbers, Deb Hartman, Keith Hinrichs, Joyce Robinson, Marilyn Ruthe, Pastor Donnley, ex-officio. Chapel Hearth Project: Council members met briefly in the Chapel Hearth Room to discuss ideas and see furniture arrangements for the redecorating project. The results of the vote for keeping the paneling original or lightening up the walls was to lighten the walls by a large majority. Joyce had a sample of paneling painted so we could get an idea of how that would look. Also, she reported that the ceiling tiles are NOT asbestos. Furniture selected will be flexible for the space, practical in providing storage as well as attractive. She also presented an estimated budget for the project. Opening prayer: Pastor Donnley June Minutes: Previously approved by email.
Treasurer‘s Report: Donnley clarified some items in the report. The latest total of Congregational gifts for the air conditioning project is $12,845. Perry will be requesting the transfer of the $4,000 from Endowment per Council decision from June meeting. Building and Grounds will provide the remaining balance. Treasurer‘s report was approved by a motion by Mary, 2nd by Lisa. Discussion followed, motion carried. Air conditioning Project: Keith explained some of the options on the new A/C units and how the system works in the kitchen/ fellowship hall area. Discussion followed regarding possibly changing the wiring between the A/C units to regulate all 3 (in the Chapel Hearth room) equally so one unit will not be running alone 19
to cool the entire space and having them programmable for those times when the space is scheduled to be in use. Mechanical will be contacted to advise on this. Chapel Hearth Project: A report on realized or possible funding sources was discussed which listed memorials and funds already designated or potentially available to meet the redecorating projected budget. Other possible funding sources were discussed. Joyce, as a member of the decorating committee, presented the options for the walls and ceiling of the space which are: 1. Painting the paneling, 2. Covering the paneling with drywall and paint. 3. Painting the ceiling tiles which are in good condition, along with the ceiling light fixtures to brighten them as well. Discussion followed. It was decided that Joyce would go back to the committee and get bids and an estimate for doing the drywall and painting options to get an idea of cost involved and present to Council at the August meeting. The cost for the total project can then be presented at the congregational meeting for approval. Reports: The Youth Ministry report was read and the Council discussed possibilities for providing help for the leaders via volunteers or a paid position. Pastor Donnley excused himself for the remainder of the meeting. 2012 Budget: Employee Compensation items for the 2012 budget were examined. Bill made a motion to give 2% raises across the board with the exception of the custodian. Marilyn 2nd. The custodian‘s salary will be discussed at the August meeting. This expense, at present, includes the administrative fees through Hugh‘s Resources. Motion carried. Adjournment: Meeting adjourned at 8:30 pm with the Mizpah 20
Benediction. Next Council meeting is August 8 Respectfully submitted, Deb Hartman, Council Secretary
