AS THE SPIRIT MOVES ME….. Yesterday was the first day of Advent, the beginning of our journey to the celebration of God coming in human person and form in Jesus Christ: our Emmanuel, God-with-us, which is what the word, Emmanuel, means. Like the story of Ebenezer Scrooge, it is a season in which you and I often reflect on what was, what is, and what will be. As I think of the Christmas shopping I will be doing in the coming days and weeks, I am mindful of the one gift I remember from my youth. In fact, it’s the only gift I have a memory of receiving - the football I got for Christmas when I was in junior high. I so wanted and was so excited by that football; but I know that it was about much more than that football. It meant time playing catch with my dad and brother, or a pick-up game with neighbor kids - boys and girls. It was an “interactive” game, as so many games are marketed today. But the interactive part was with others, in person; drawing up routes on the palm of your hand and making the neighbors’ trees, bushes and lampposts the goal lines. 45+ years later that long-lost football is still a special gift. I’m also mindful of Christmas Eve of 1969, with just enough warmth to make the evening comfortable, with a gentle snow falling as we crossed the street to enter church for the early service. I also had the profound honor, privilege and joy of being able to put my grandmother’s arm in mine, steady her and walk her across the street so she didn’t fall. It was the only Christmas I remember being able to do that. I don’t remember any other Christmas that she was with us, though she might have been. I also didn’t know it, at the time, but it was to be her last Christmas with us. I am mindful of that memory every Christmas, too. But then there’s also the Christmas season in Algona, Iowa, in the 3
years in which I became good friends with the local Roman Catholic priest, a man with whom Sandy and I are still good friends, though we have very little opportunity to get together. Still, I remember the year he gave me a bottle of Chevas Regal scotch. It was given to him by a parishioner, but he didn’t enjoy scotch. He asked me if I would want it. Those of you who know that scotch is my alcoholic beverage of choice will not be surprised to know that I couldn’t get the words out of my mouth quick enough, for all my child-like exuberance. The football - an inexpensive gift. The walk across the street with my grandmother - a moment to honor one from whom I had come. The bottle of scotch - an unexpected, joy-giving, generous gift. Each of these make a connection for me with the greater and deeper meanings of this season - the gift of Jesus Christ. He wasn’t born into extravagance. He is the One who was before time and from whom we come, and in whom “we live, and move, and have our being” (Acts. 17:28). He is the One who comes to us in unexpected times and ways, gives us joy deep in our souls, and is God’s gift of generous love, life, forgiveness, grace, promise and more. What are your deepest, most profound, joyful, meaningful memories of this season? How are they a metaphor for and your deep connection with the coming and birth of Christ? Your answers may bring new joy and meaning to this year’s Christmas season for you.

Kevin’s Korner... I’m writing this the day before Thanksgiving. I can’t believe that I’m back from the National Youth Workers Convention already. Kirsten and I had an amazing time in Training, Worship and Fellowship. My favorite part of our time away was a spiritual retreat lead by Mark Yaconelli. Ask me about it sometime, I’d love to share with you. This year has really flown by. It seems to be speeding up as we approach the holidays. I’ve begun planning next year’s events for the Sr. High and Jr. High youth. We have winter retreat, Super Bowl Subs, and another middle school Lock-in and a UCC National Youth Event that included some amazing Missions opportunities. But I’m sure you can tell, one thing that trips me up every year is that I’m so focused on what’s next I miss the joy in the here and now. I switch gears so fast that I’m on to the next thing before I wrap up the activities I’m working on now. This year I want to thoroughly enjoy the holidays. The sights, sounds, tastes, smells. I want to be present in the moment. I’ll have to make an effort to shut down those random Youth Ministry thoughts that consume me. I’ve been trying to get stuff off my to do list so it’s not hanging over my head on Thanksgiving. Do you feel like this sometimes? Perhaps you’re so busy you miss the family time. You’re so wrapped up in a project that you miss that family interaction. Maybe you’re so consumed by what has to be done that you’ve lost what has been accomplished. This holiday season give yourself permission to stop, take a breath and appreciate all God has provided. Most importantly take time to celebrate the birth of Jesus. I pray that God blesses you and I with the patience to be present this holiday season. Merry Christmas, Kevin T. Eckert Director of Children & Youth Ministries 5

I want to say “Thank You” to all of the members of this ministry and I want everyone to know we are willing to make home visits, home communions, hospital calls, some trips to help out with errands and spread a lot of love to our members of St. John and our community. S T EWARDSHIP M I NIST RY Applying Bible Principles “Strategic planning” is a two-word term that can best be described as a “buzz word.” It’s in vogue. It’s trendy for businesses (and churches) to talk about and engage in strategic planning. Frequently, when quizzed about why they should engage in strategic planning, business owners and managers will respond with a host of reasons and yet miss the basic benefit that comes from planning: Businesses which plan are more profitable than those which do not. In other words, those who aim at something are more likely to hit it than those who aim at nothing. Similarly, when it comes to giving, Christians are to develop a “strategic plan.” We are instructed to set aside funds systematically, regularly, for support of the Lord’s work. In that way, when we come to worship each week, we’ll be prepared to give. We will have “planned” our giving under the divine leadership of the Holy Spirit. Then, by giving that which we have set aside, we will put our plan to work as the offering is received. Yes, the Holy Spirit can and sometimes does lead us to give gifts in a spontaneous manner without planning. But as a rule, spontaneous, unplanned giving is the exception. Most of the time, God wants His people to give systematically and to respond to His direction in their lives by careful planning. Speaking of consistent givers (the kind who generally plan their giving), Randy Alcorn described them as the “backbone of the church.” Such people do not miss giving to the Lord’s work, even when they are unable to attend. Just because they are not physically present when the offering plate is passed does not mean that they skip a Sunday or two in supporting the life and ministry of the church. Be ready to give as the Spirit of God leads, even on a moment’s notice. Be ready to give when a special need arises. But most of 8
all, develop a “strategic plan” to give by seeking God’s direction concerning your giving and by putting aside funds in preparation for giving. Then “work your plan” by giving those funds as you gather at St. John United Church of Christ with other Christians each Lord’s Day. And when you can’t be present for worship, plan carefully to be sure that your giving follows your plan. Remember, the work and ministry of St. John United Church of Christ go on week after week, even when you are unable to be present.

Our Cookie Walk was another Huge success! Thank you to everyone who contributed in any way: making phone calls, setting up, making those delicious cookies, candy and snack mixes, the Peanut Brittle Crews, The Resource Group, working during the cookie walk, providing supplies or with your monetary donation. ALL were greatly appreciated. Thank you to all who sent cards, offered expressions of support, and prayed for us and our family following the death of my father, Hugh, Sr., in August and then my mother, Janet, in September. It is nice to know that as one loses family, church family is quick to fill the void. St. John is, indeed, a caring, loving church family bonded together not by blood but the Spirit—and that is a special and powerful bond. In Christ and with appreciation, Hugh & Sarah Knapp 17

ST . JOHN UCC COUNCIL MINUT ES
Nov 14, 2011 Members present: Perry Cowan, President, Mary Arnold, Bill Condie, Lisa Ebbers, Deb Hartman, Keith Hinrichs, Ben Lee, Marilyn Ruthe, Pastor Donnley, ex-officio. Opening Prayer: Pastor Donnley October Minutes: Previously approved email. Treasurer’s Report: Additional information and clarifications by Donnley. Discussed whether there is a need for monies to be set aside for boiler maintenance and what the life expectancy is of the heating system. Mary made the motion to approve the report as presented. Lisa 2nd. Discussion followed. Motion carried. Church Accountant Position: Pam Wessel has accepted the additional duties of the bookkeeping position, estimating that it will add a few more hours per week to her schedule. We will look at that more closely in a few weeks in terms of salary adjustment.
Prairie Association Meeting: Marilyn, Deb and Donnley reported that the speaker, Paul Nixon, at the meeting was excellent. His theme was “I Refuse to Lead a Dying Church”. He has consulted for over 400 churches. He emphasizes innovations in mission and ministry in the community. We discussed the idea of bringing his services to St. John. We are in a positive, healthy position and it would be an excellent time to plan our future. The idea will be presented at the congregational meeting on November 20. 2012 Budget: Printed and available on the table in the narthex. Church Insurance Inquiry: Mark Swanson of Diamond Bros. Insurance Agency, Inc., and who attends St. John has requested to be given the opportunity to do a comparison of insurance for 19
us. The Council approved giving him permission to view our policy. Other Items: Request from Mavis Clark for “seed money to purchase materials for another quilt to be raffled as a fundraiser. Deb reported the recent use of the Chapel Hearth room for a baby shower. There were a lot of positive comments on the attractiveness and comfort of the space. The date for the January Congregation meeting is January 22, 2012. Meeting adjourned with the Mizpah Benediction. Respectfully submitted, Deb Hartman, Council Secretary CONGREGATION MEETING 11-20-11 Call to Order: Perry Cowan, Council President Opening Prayer: Pastor Donnley Presentation of Proposed 2012 Budget: A motion to adopt 2012 Budget as presented was made by Ben Lee. The motion was 2nd by Betty Carpenter. There was no discussion. Motion was carried. Presentation of Prairie Association Meeting: Seven people represented St. John at the Prairie Association Meeting: Pastor Donnley, Justin Mapes, Jean Koch, Carol Ahrens, Marilyn Ruthe, Deb Scott and Deb Hartman. The key speaker was Rev. Paul Nixon who wrote the book ,I Refuse to Lead a Dying Church, which was the subject of the workshop he lead. The emphasis was that each church faces challenges to maintain strength and vitality in the future and how to meet those challenges. Pastor Donnley will be retiring in the next few years and as a means to make us stronger and ease the time of transition as a result he proposed to the Council to hire Rev. Nixon and bring his experience as a strategist to St. John. Rev. Nixon has worked with over 400 churches as a consultant. His fee would probably be around $10,000 for the first year, each following 20
year the fee is $800. The Council then decided to bring this proposal to this congregational meeting to give everyone an idea of what this expert can do for us. Rev. Nixon has had much success in helping churches move toward a transition that is healthy and strengthens the life of the church. Donnley briefly presented some of the powerpoint that was used at the workshop. Questions followed regarding the success rate of his work, perspective of the consulting fees, etc. Historically, we average 10 funerals every year and over a few years time, that is a significant attrition to our membership. It was pointed out that we are in a healthy, strong, positive position right now and it would be a good time to look at ourselves as a church and examine our strengths and weaknesses as a part of the community and what our future could be. Also, it would be important when we are in the search for a new pastor to have a sense of clarity and defined purpose for our future. Perry explained that the purpose of the presentation was to provide the information for consideration, not to make any decisions today. The Council will shape a proposal process (including funding options, and necessary next steps) in the next Council meetings. The outcome of this process will be reported at the January 2012 congregational meeting. Please speak to Council members about your thoughts and concerns so your feedback can become part of the process. Other Business: No other business. Closing Prayer: Pastor Donnley Adjournment: Stan Smith made a motion to adjourn, Ulan Price 2nd. Motion carried. Respectfully submitted, Deb Hartman Council Secretary 21
